00:29England were playing South Africa at Rabalpindi, that was in the other round and then I was quite intrigued with the England side, I mean, you know, slightly outdated in the sense for the one day game, you had Robin Smith, they banked quite a bit on the experience side of it and then England never really, although, you know, when it comes to the World Cup, I think they had played their best 11 for the one day for the World Cup, but somewhere down the line, you know, they have,
00:59they didn't really show that kind of a loyalty to the one dayers throughout, they didn't play many one dayers, they always thought this cricket was the cricket, so somewhere down the line, you know, you could see it in their batting lineup or even in their bowling, you know, they, for an outsider, it really didn't convince him that, you know, this is the team which is going to win.
01:20I think the thing about English cricket was somewhere, I mean, they reached the finals of the 92 World Cup, but from then on, I don't think they ever really cracked one day cricket.
01:28England is, I think, perhaps is only changing now, but the dominant culture has always been that of desk cricket, they never took it as seriously as they do one day cricket, and they never through the 90s kept pace with all that is happening in the world of one day cricket.
01:44They sent an absolutely appalling team to the 96 World Cup, I'm not saying it's just that they selected a bad team, but the way the team played, and they did not bring anything to the table, which led you to believe that they're doing something special for the kind of conditions they were going to be playing under.
02:05Coming to the South African bowling line-up, I think they had one of the most versatile bowling attacks, if you ask me, you had Simcox, who was pretty effective on these wickets, who used to really bowl wicket to wicket, then you had, to open the attack, it was Fani Di Villiers, one of the best one day bowlers I have come across, and then you had Pollock, who was young and upcoming, very keen, very enthusiastic, and then you had the big brand Macmillan, and Craig Matthews, who was a good wicket to wicket bowler, so I think,
02:35they had a very comprehensive bowling attack, which looked very formidable on the papers.
02:42South Africa had a good team on paper, yes, they had a good team, they even played well.
02:50A crucial Group B fixture at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium between England and South Africa, the South Africans coming off a convincing victory against New Zealand, but England had been tested by the lowly Dutch in their last encounter.
03:02Just the one change in the South African line-up, there was no Alan Donald, and he was replaced by Fani Di Villiers, which meant that their bowling line-up read Di Villiers, Matthews, Simcox, Pollock, and Macmillan, with Hansi Cronier, the captain, also chipping in.
03:17For England, there was an unchanged line-up, with Martin, Goff, De Freitas, and Cork making up the bowling attack, but there was going to be a change in the batting order.
03:24Stewart had opened with Smith in the last game, but now it was going to be Captain Atherton opening up, with Stewart coming lower down the order.
03:32South African captain, Hansi Cronier, won the toss, and had no hesitation in deciding to bat first.
03:41It's the first run of the day.
03:49That's through.
03:53Harry Kirsten, posting the first boundary of the day, in that very strong area for him, just behind point.
04:02Yes, this is his best shot, he's always looking to slice the ball away, round about, in front of point, to behind square, is his favourite area.
04:13In South Africa, they got to a stage where, they felt the best way to bowl at him, when he got in, was to go around the wicket, just try and took him up for a bit of room.
04:23That's right there again.
04:30Oh, he's dropped it.
04:32Dominic Cork, the culprit.
04:33Well, as you're saying, South Africa are playing good winning cricket, and when you're doing that, things tend to go your way.
04:45And when you're playing indifferently, with a lack of confidence and conviction, like England, you find that when the chances come, like this, you spill them.
04:56I mean, that is demoralizing for a bowler, when you, you know, a batsman's got away with a couple of shots that have just missed the field.
05:06He's just gone over the top, and then he could hole out, he don't get a wicket.
05:09That's a much better strike from Paul Froman, that'll just be the one bounce, over the mid-wicket boundary.
05:18De Freitas looking deflated.
05:22Yeah, and I'm sure he's deflated, disappointed, down, he could have had him out, and then he's got smacked into the deep.
05:30That's through straight mid-wicket for another boundary for Paul Froman.
05:37The pinch hitter's doing the job.
05:39Well, there's a good strike, this, got himself down the pitch, moved his feet, and just smacked it into the gap.
05:50England have put a man out, but he's far too square.
05:53Lovely footwork, you know exactly what he's going to try and do.
05:57See, they're on the crest of a wave of South Africa.
06:02And that's four runs.
06:05De Freitas straying in line, and
06:07no doubt at all about the
06:10Paul Froman approach.
06:12He's going to swing the bat at anything.
06:17Four more coming up.
06:19And that's a beautiful shot.
06:20I mean, it's a proper cricket shot, not a slog.
06:24Beautifully played, and we've seen Gary Kirsten play a number of shots like that.
06:28Well, he's a man in form.
06:34Just behind square, moving around about the pads of Gary Kirsten will disappear.
06:41Kirsten never had the charisma of some of the other contemporary cricketers that he played with,
06:46the opening batsmen of Jai Surya and Sachin and people like that.
06:50But he was a very, very fine batsman, he was very efficient, and I think he had more shots than he let on as well.
06:58He liked to himself be quite, sort of, he had a lot of self-deprecating humor about his own batting.
07:06But he, I think he had a pretty, he was very good at chipping the ball over the infield.
07:11He was an excellent runner.
07:12He used to take very good twos and threes, and he used to use the field restrictions very well.
07:19And he had the sort of stamina and the hunger to make very good scores and very consistently.
07:25A very mentally tough cricketer, and I think one who could adapt to conditions.
07:30That's very important.
07:31Guy Kirsten's got runs in all formats of the game, and in all parts of the world.
07:34And I think in, for a period in the mid-90s, he was one of the finest batsmen in world cricket.
07:46Well, Gary Kirsten's goes through very familiar emotions.
07:49That was a long half volley, not very well bowled, and a beautiful straight drive, and the half century comes up.
07:56Well, that's a good start for South Africa.
07:5850 brought up on the 10th over.
08:00Their target would have been around about 40 to 45, I would imagine, for no wicket.
08:03And Kirsten playing straight, which has been a feature of his batting so far in Pakistan.
08:08Fine shot indeed.
08:09That's up in the air, and surely that must be out.
08:18It is.
08:21Great relief among English supporters that it went to the man with the gloves.
08:25That's a good job done for South Africa by Paltrowman.
08:3256 for one is the score.
08:34After 12 overs and two balls.
08:38Paltrowman riding his luck again, getting down the wicket.
08:42Big stride forward, but really wasn't a very good shot.
08:44You won't find that in too many coaching manuals.
08:46It's the job he's been put out there to do, and Jack Russell doesn't drop those.
08:5156 for one.
08:52Powerful now for the 28.
08:55Hansi Cronier, the South African captain, is the man who's come in now.
08:59First wicket down.
08:5956 for one.
09:01We're in the 13th over.
09:02Got away, and that'll be four.
09:11Stewart's very fine at third man, with no one in the slip area.
09:15For the poor delivery.
09:17Short and wide to a man in form, and you will get punished.
09:21Yes, and you don't have to give him much room.
09:23I mentioned this before.
09:25He's always looking to slice it away behind point.
09:27It's well run.
09:37Oopsie.
09:37Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear.
09:41Oh, it's five.
09:48Words fail me.
09:50Well, all that hard work at the last six or seven overs from the England bowlers, all wasted.
09:55Just pegged the South African batsman back a little bit.
10:01And then, pinch a quick single.
10:04There's Alex Stewart, I think, backing up.
10:08For South Africa.
10:10Oh, this is going to be tight if he hits.
10:12That is tight.
10:14It'll be an ask.
10:15And I think Gary Kirsten's struggling.
10:17Now, a good cricket from Hansi Cronje there, though.
10:23They don't know whether he's out or not.
10:24Hansi called Gary Kirsten.
10:27I think that Gary Kirsten thought he was out.
10:28Cullen, an excellent one-day cricketer, loves to play his shots, loves playing against England.
10:42Averaging very nearly 42 runs per innings against them.
10:46Alex Stewart doing the fielding there at the boundary.
11:00He's the man who ran out Gary Kirsten.
11:05We have a terrific view from the stump cam, and we'll see Kirsten well short.
11:10As the picture just wobbles a little bit when the ball hits now.
11:12He was normally a keeper, so that really was a good performance from him.
11:26There's a big nick there, and Cronje's gone.
11:29Goff's got him out.
11:32Steve Randall, no hesitation there.
11:34The fingers up straight away.
11:36South Africa, 88 for three now.
11:39That's exactly the same line that Hansi Cronje got out,
11:41in the test series against England and South Africa.
11:45And then consistently bowled this line.
11:46Just that side-off stump.
11:48Side-off stump.
11:49Hansi not quite far enough forward, and a little nick.
11:52And Jack Russell doing the rest.
11:54Hansi Cronje, not for 15.
11:56South Africa, 88 for three.
11:58Jack Callis plays his cricket for Western Province in South Africa.
12:07Western Province, who recently lifted the Castle Cup,
12:11the domestic first-class competition in South Africa.
12:13This is his tenth match.
12:16Already averaging 30 in the one-day game.
12:21He's facing Darren Goff.
12:27Lovely straight drive, four runs.
12:29That was a magnificent shot.
12:35So casually played.
12:36What a way to get off the mark.
12:41And that's what he is trying to do in the first place.
12:44One bounce, four runs.
12:45It's been a nightmare morning for De Freitas.
12:55Yes, you can't complain about this though.
12:57This is a good shot.
12:58He gets down to it.
12:59Takes it on the up.
13:01He just smacks it straight over Longhorn.
13:03It's a very good shot.
13:08Great shot.
13:10Driven high over cover.
13:11Darryl Cullinan.
13:23Well, the umpires have decided now that
13:25the rain is too hard, too persistent.
13:29And that play should be terminated for the moment.
13:32Darryl Cullinan is 31 not out and Callis is 15.
13:46The England players making their way out onto the centre
13:50at the Pindy cricket ground.
13:52And the good news is that this is still a 50-over cricket match.
13:56That's out.
14:01Middle stump out of the ground.
14:02Cullinan's gone.
14:03De Freitas finishes in fine style.
14:06That's the end of his bowling spell.
14:08South Africa, 137 for four now.
14:12Well, that ball seemed to just skid on a little bit.
14:15Seemed to just shoot on a little bit quicker.
14:18Whether it's through the little bit of rain or not,
14:21it just zipped through the gap on fairly quickly.
14:25Never quite got to the pitch of the ball.
14:27There was a huge gap there between bat and pad.
14:30A very nice 34 from Darryl Cullinan.
14:33And South Africa, 137 for four.
14:39Single to Jack Callis.
14:41This will bring the new batsman, John T. Rhodes, on to strike.
14:45Rhodes in at number six in this very strong South African batting line-up.
14:51That's a big hit.
14:54There's two bounces over the long-on boundary.
15:01This is the way to play a one-day innings.
15:04The senior batsman gets out.
15:06And the batsman that's in takes over.
15:08Well, I think he's a very talented young player, Callis.
15:12The more he plays, the more I see of him, the more I like him.
15:16I think as he gets more experience, he'll just get better.
15:23Chase for Stewart.
15:24He's not going to get there.
15:29That went like a rocket to the boundary edge.
15:32Well, I thought this was a super shot from John DeRoad.
15:35Remember, he's just come in.
15:36He's hardly had time to get a sighter or two.
15:39And he just opens the face here and slices it off.
15:43And it did go like a rocket.
15:45Very quickly, indeed.
15:46Excellent running.
15:58And there may be problems here for Fairbrother.
16:03Hasn't got much protection on that head.
16:05Just seemed to catch his studs and stumble a little bit.
16:14Coming in and looking to play a bit of football.
16:17Kick the ball onto the stumps.
16:19And just seemed to catch his studs there and fall.
16:22Half volley from Martin.
16:30No way Hicks is going to stop that.
16:32Well, I realise when batsmen are going for the shots.
16:43It's not always easy, but this is a very full half volley.
16:47He's kept the ball short of a length most of the time,
16:50but his disappointment with himself was shown there
16:53as he kicked the air a little bit in disgust at the delivery.
16:56Big shot by Cork.
17:02Randall's finger goes up.
17:05Callis doesn't like it, but he's got to go.
17:08The 5th South African wicket is down.
17:10And they've made 163.
17:14Yes, Jax Callis seemed to be the only person there
17:16who was near the bat who didn't think he touched it.
17:20We could see the wicketkeeper, even the umpire,
17:22was up with his finger quickly.
17:24163 for five.
17:28Leading all-rounders comes out to the middle.
17:31Brian McMillan.
17:38That's a terrific shot.
17:40Terrific shot.
17:43At first it looked like a hack across the line,
17:45but in fact it was played with terrific strength.
17:48Quite a bit of control.
17:49Rhodes sweeping the medium pace of thought.
18:04And there's another shot that's a brilliant stop.
18:10Well, Dominic Corp put all the bits together that time.
18:12He has made brilliant stops in the past,
18:16but then he leaps in and fumbles the ball.
18:19But that was all right.
18:23Here's Boulding.
18:24And that's very well bowled by Martin.
18:27Again, if you look closely,
18:28when you see again,
18:29you'll see the little off-cutter,
18:31slower ball,
18:32Rhodes through the shot,
18:33and
18:35onto the stumps.
18:4037 of 32 balls.
18:42That's an excellent contribution.
18:45Martin to Sean Pollock.
18:53Good long reach.
18:55Easy single.
18:56End of a good over by Martin.
18:581.96 for six.
19:05A ball in.
19:07Extremely happy time to Neal Smith.
19:10You can't get happier than that.
19:13Well, it looks a bit form,
19:14but in fact,
19:15to take the wicket of Brian McMillan
19:16is a big prize.
19:25They're just looking to hit that away.
19:26Two square at the end of the day
19:28and the leg stump gets dislodged.
19:31It's good bowling from Neal Smith
19:33and he'll be very happy.
19:34South Africa now
19:35in more trouble
19:36than I think they'd like to be
19:38in terms of wickets lost.
19:39199 for seven.
19:45Pat Simcox is a fairly lusty hitter
19:48of the ball,
19:49but I don't know.
19:51The average doesn't really mean a great deal.
19:54I don't know that that's what
19:54South Africa require at the moment.
19:56There's six overs left to bat here
19:57and seven down.
20:01They've got to get down to making sure
20:03they don't get bowled out
20:04within the 50 overs.
20:05another slow one
20:14in the air
20:15caught brilliantly.
20:16Wonderful catch.
20:19Graham Thorpe
20:19there was a cracking shot
20:26and difficult to line up
20:28because it was dipping
20:29just before it got to mid on.
20:33And Graham Thorpe
20:33is strong hand
20:34the left hand
20:35found it going in that direction.
20:36That was a help.
20:39Terrific catch
20:40just within the needs
20:41and the eighth figure goes down
20:44for 202.
20:50Craig Matthews is the new batsman.
20:57Experience performer
20:5746 matches
20:59savaging nine with the bat
21:00just under 10.
21:05He's out this time
21:06straight to Fairbrother
21:07who holds on neatly.
21:10Well he struck every ball
21:17cleanly
21:17struck that cleanly
21:18but in the air
21:19and new Fairbrother
21:23very safe pair of hands
21:25at short cover.
21:28Farley de Villiers
21:29is the new batsman
21:30he is to just
21:30face a single ball
21:32left in this over
21:33from Dominic Cork.
21:34Again that goes to Fairbrother
21:38but along the ground
21:39this time
21:39it's 213
21:41for nine.
21:47That's way past Hick
21:49and into the advertising hoardings.
21:53That's a very valuable boundary
21:54for South Africa.
21:58Well they left it
21:59until the last two balls
22:00before
22:02Lemo came on
22:04and
22:05that's just heaved away
22:06on the onside
22:07hit with the length
22:08of the ball.
22:09One of the only deliveries
22:10in this over
22:11that Gough hasn't got
22:12right underneath
22:13the batsman.
22:14This next one
22:15will be I'll bet you.
22:18The last ball

22:50It is pretty well
22:51but the England

22:53extreme of the
22:5430 meters
22:55they didn't have
22:55to be any closer
22:56Neil Smith's
22:57timing is
22:58jumped perfectly.

23:54Jeffrey Boycott
23:55well that was
23:57a nothing sort of shot
23:59just about confirms
24:01what Bob said
24:02and I would have said
24:03he's not in the best
24:04of form
24:04isn't Michael Atherton
24:05just trying to open
24:07the face
24:07and guide it down
24:08to third man
24:09and he's gone
24:11very bad start
24:13for England
24:14not for one
24:15England set back
24:20on their heels
24:21straight away
24:22Graham Hick
24:24just digesting his lunch
24:28and he's out in the middle
24:29after just four balls
24:30of England's innings
24:32with no runs
24:33on the board
24:33but Hick a very impressive
24:37one day average
24:39over 40 runs

24:41comfortable single
24:49Hick completing the fielding
24:53it was his bat
24:54that diverted the ball
24:56he's quite entitled
24:59to take another run
25:01but it's considered
25:03rather ungentlemanly
25:05to do so
25:06but of course
25:06if the ball goes
25:07to the boundary
25:08off the bat
25:08the umpires have no
25:09option but to
25:11signal a further
25:13four runs
25:14it's a slog over mid on
25:19two or three bounces
25:24and over the rope
25:25Neil Smith
25:29to determine
25:30to keep the momentum
25:31of this innings going
25:32well this is his favourite area
25:37hit it pretty well
25:38didn't try to hit it
25:39out of sight
25:40gave it a decent belt
25:42and it cleared me
25:43on quite comfortably
25:45in the air
25:51and out
25:52that's McMillan
25:53at short mid wicket
25:54Graham Hick's gone
25:56England now
25:5722 for 2
25:58big big wicket
26:05huge wicket
26:07for South Africa
26:08Graham Hick
26:10the most important player
26:11in top form
26:12just clipping this
26:13in the air
26:14and you don't often
26:16give South Africans
26:17catches
26:17because they had
26:18a brilliant feeling
26:19inside
26:20that was an easy catch
26:21taken comfortably
26:22by McMillan
26:2322 for 2
26:24joy for South Africa
26:29England's second
26:30wicket falls
26:31Atherton and Hick
26:33gone now
26:33Graham Thorpe
26:34replaces
26:35Graham Hick
26:36average in the upper
26:41thirties
26:41for Graham Thorpe
26:42six fifties
26:46best in a world series
26:50cup match
26:50at Brisbane
26:51against Zimbabwe
26:52and we expect
27:01great fielding
27:02and that's what we're seeing
27:03good effort from Craig Matthews
27:06normally an opening bowler
27:07today just going to do
27:08the first change job
27:09because of Alan Donald
27:10illness
27:10but there's really
27:12no cart horses
27:13at all in the South African
27:14line-up
27:14terrific effort from him
27:16and the South African field
27:18is very agile indeed
27:19shot from Thorpe
27:21holding his wrist nicely
27:23deserved more than that
27:25that's good stop
27:33but the importance of
27:35John T. Rhodes
27:36is not the stop
27:37because it comes out again
27:38but how quickly
27:39he recovers
27:40and how quickly
27:41he's ready to throw again
27:42he always saves about 20 runs
27:45in the field
27:45and certainly a big risk
27:49to take any runs
27:49to him at all
27:50even on a miss field
27:51over the top
27:57well played
27:58deliberately played there
27:59no real power on the ball
28:04and so
28:04John T. Rhodes
28:06it's time to turn around
28:07two more runs
28:07to Neil Smith
28:09well he's doing a good job
28:10I mean he's not
28:10throwing the bat at it
28:11at the same time
28:12he's not afraid of
28:13hitting the ball in there
28:14he's a bit more circumspect
28:15than Steve Palferman
28:17fancy that
28:18he'd be playing in South Africa
28:20or Australia
28:20with a quicker wickets
28:21that probably would have
28:22raced off to the boundary
28:23nice of track here today
28:25Pindi Cricket Stadium
28:26very slow
28:26well this time
28:30there's a bit more
28:31middle on the ball
28:32and that's way out
28:33to the deep
28:34in the wicket boundary
28:34will it get there
28:35it just runs up
28:37against the rope
28:37it's a stroke
28:43that has to be played
28:43with great talent
28:44and not a little caution
28:46because the ball
28:47actually slanting away
28:48if you look at it
28:48and it's going towards
28:50second slip
28:51that's out
28:56that's out
28:58feet nowhere near the ball
28:59this is a bit of a slog
29:00in the end
29:01but that's why
29:01Neil Smith is there
29:02well it's terrific stuff
29:14by Rhodes at the point
29:15spends a lot of time
29:23practicing his fielding
29:24sets the standards
29:26for the rest of the team
29:27see that having to work so jolly hard
29:35for everything
29:36top class bowling
29:37backed up by good feeling
29:39makes life tough
29:40if you're a batsman
29:41and that's what you're going to do
29:43if you're a top side
29:44you've just got to make it tough
29:46for batsmen
29:46to get the boundaries
29:48so they're working hard
29:49on only getting singles
29:51that leg by brought up
29:54England's 50
29:55but in the 19th over
29:56so well under 3 and over
29:58they're scoring out at the moment
29:59South Africa's 50 game
30:01in the 10.2 overs
30:03he's hit
30:13they should run
30:15for another run here
30:16they don't know
30:17whether he's out or not
30:17until the umpire
30:19sends for the third umpire's
30:20view
30:21they should have run
30:23for a second run there
30:24Alex Stewart
30:25dawdle
30:25he ran one
30:27wondering if he's out or not
30:29the ball cannon
30:29and off the stumps into the deep
30:31Graham Ford was aware of it
30:33but Alex Stewart wasn't
30:35he's the man that could be out
30:36he pushed it
30:37a direct hit here
30:39he looked as if he might just have made his ground
30:43but
30:43oh
30:44he's gone
30:45no back down
30:46he is gone
30:48no doubt at all
30:49we don't need a second or third replay
30:52that is poor running
30:55it's been over 10 overs since England hit a boundary
31:14life is proving very difficult for them
31:18up in the air
31:26and a really soft dismissal
31:28Neil Fairbrother goes in Simcox's first over
31:32England in tatters
31:3462 for 5
31:35the pressure created
31:44by the seam bowlers
31:46Fairbrother trying to improvise
31:49makes a complete hash of it
31:515 down for 62
31:53England
31:53England wicketkeeper Jack Russell
31:58in at number 7
31:59still in only the 24th over
32:04singles won't be enough
32:22for England
32:23razor sharp fielding
32:25that one gets away though
32:26and that'll run
32:27it's four runs and sort of hollow cheers break out
32:33on the terraces
32:35that's the first
32:38England four
32:40for 19 overs
32:41good shot
32:55another good over building up here for England
33:00just a bit short of length there
33:08from the South African captain
33:09and he's at such a medium slow pace
33:13that he must bowl
33:14very very accurately in length and line
33:17and big shot there
33:21the batsman doesn't want to go
33:23everybody else wants him to go
33:25including the umpire
33:26so that's usually pretty fatal
33:28so Graham Thorpe goes
33:33it's 97 to the 6
33:34well Graham Thorpe didn't think he hit it
33:38but the indication to me was
33:40that the umpire
33:41very quickly gave him out
33:42didn't wait
33:44and no doubt
33:45we know the wicketkeeper goes up
33:46he's quite convinced
33:47there's an edge there
33:49he's up immediately
33:50but the umpire
33:52we don't see him in that shot
33:54but his fingers up immediately
33:55England in big trouble now
33:5897 for 6
33:59thank you very much
34:06well that was just a short of a length delivery
34:09from round the wicket
34:10he could have whacked it anywhere
34:12and he just knocked it to John T. Road
34:14and said listen
34:15I just want to check if you're asleep
34:17here's a little catch
34:18and John T. says well no
34:20I'm not asleep
34:21I'm watching
34:21and thank you very much
34:23and we'll have England now
34:2497 for 7
34:25that's a big hit
34:30a magnificent 6
34:37England need plenty more of them
34:40they do
34:44but how refreshing
34:45the freighter's taking it
34:47to South Africa
34:49in the middle this one
34:51there's never any doubt
34:54once it left the bat
34:55that one
35:00will reach
35:01the extra cover fence
35:02as good a shot
35:11as you've seen
35:12all day
35:13down the wicket
35:14inside it
35:15and hit it very hard
35:16way over extra cover's head
35:20and
35:21bisecting long off
35:23and
35:25the sweeper
35:26on the square cover boundary
35:28that's four more
35:35Philip De Freyder still thinks
35:41there's hope there for England
35:42that's the only way to think
35:44right right too
35:47you don't need to hit
35:50a couple of boundaries
35:52and over in order to stay in the
35:54in the run race
35:55one and over isn't enough now
35:57unless it's six
35:58certainly one already this over
36:02that's a big hit
36:06won't reach long off
36:08two more runs
36:11and once again the umpire asks
36:14for the opinion of the television replay
36:17and the third umpire
36:19Mr. Partasati from India
36:23is the man who will adjudicate
36:25on this run out call
36:27what did you think Robin
36:28well
36:29I thought it was tight
36:31it's just
36:32De Villiers has got such a wonderful arm
36:34goes straight into his hand
36:37and now it's a question of whether
36:39a bullet throw can
36:40beat the batsman
36:42Opsi
36:43again
36:45that bat has not gone
36:48the full distance of the arm legs
36:51jammed into the ground
36:53and that means the end
36:56of Philip De Freyder
36:57over they go
37:01I don't suppose you can actually
37:07blame Cork at this stage of the day
37:09but
37:10ungraceful departure
37:13I think you'd probably say
37:141.41 for nine
37:16almost a hopeless task
37:21boundaries were required
37:23two of them and over at least
37:24and Matthews just worked on the line of
37:28by a ball straight
37:30he misses
37:31I'll hit
37:32don't want it Cork
37:3317 off
37:3432 deliveries England
37:35one wicket away from defeat
37:37four runs
37:42a good blow struck
37:47late in the day
37:48shin high full toss
37:50Goff put his left foot
37:52to where the ball would have pitched
37:54and smashed it
37:55for four pass bit off
37:57good shot
38:02it looks an easy game
38:07this batting
38:08well when you make the ball
38:11disappear to the boundary
38:13it always looks easy
38:14and looks good
38:14Darren Goff can bat a bit
38:16but it's like he's bowling
38:19it's been a long time since
38:20he's bowled really well
38:21and battered well
38:23consistently
38:25that'll do
38:30it's all over
38:31good Yorker
38:35beautifully played
38:36and I must say
38:37that Craig Matthews
38:38lived up to this high standard
38:39of professionalism
38:40right to the end
38:41and that's been the key
38:41of South Africa's performance
38:42it's a good full-length
38:45on-link stump
38:46Yorker delivery
38:47that really
38:48seen the end of England
38:50152 all out
38:51I think Cronier
38:53Hans Cronier
38:54was actually a very very good captain
38:56I know all that he did later
38:58and obviously
38:59it's
38:59sad and he let cricket down
39:03very badly
39:03but I do not think
39:06all the matches he played
39:07were fixed matches
39:08he has a fabulous record
39:10actually as a captain
39:12and he was a very very good
39:13strong captain
39:14he was a little mechanical
39:16at times
39:16and that I think
39:18may have also had to do
39:19with the fact
39:20that it was a mechanical team
39:21it didn't have
39:22unorthodox cricketers
39:23it did not have
39:25say exciting spinners
39:27and things like that
39:27but Cronier
39:30was a fantastically
39:31disciplined man
39:32he was very keen on fitness
39:34I think the team
39:36saw his commitment
39:37to fielding
39:38fitness
39:38things like that
39:39and he was
39:40he could be aggressive
39:42especially in
39:43situations that
39:46suited the South African seamers
39:48he could be an aggressive captain
39:51and I think
39:53the conditions
39:54for him
39:56in South Africa
39:58in that World Cup
39:58were not
39:59were not perfect
40:00they would have
40:01obviously
40:01they would revel
40:02in a situation
40:03where they have
40:04more juice in the pitch
40:05where the seamers
40:06can come into effect
40:07a little bit
40:08in the context
40:09of this World Cup
40:111996 World Cup
40:12I think South Africa
40:13was one of the
40:14strongest contenders
40:15I mean
40:15they were tipped to be
40:16they were tipped
40:16to win this tournament
40:17hands down
40:19I mean
40:19if anybody
40:20had to really take
40:21a huge guess
40:21it would have been
40:22Pakistan
40:22or India
40:24or South Africa
40:24apart from the
40:25subcontinent team
40:26they would be the first one
40:27like as I said earlier
40:29the bowling
40:30really overpowered
40:32the English batsmen
40:35I think they had no answer
40:35there was a huge victory
40:36of 78 runs
40:37and
40:38you know
40:40it was a very
40:40the bowler's bowl
40:41with clinical precision
40:42so obviously
40:43it was a one-sided game
40:46by the end of the day
40:47and
40:48almost a cakewalk
40:49for the South Africans
40:50England were never in sight
40:52of the target of 231
40:54and fell well short
40:55in fact
40:56by 78 runs
40:58top scorer
40:58was Graham Thorpe
40:59with 46
41:00and down the order
41:01Philip De Freitas
41:02with 22
41:03and Dominic Cork
41:04with 17
41:05propped up their score
41:06to somewhat
41:07of a respectable level
41:08England at the end
41:10152 all out
41:12all the South African
41:14bowlers chipping in
41:15the best of them
41:15Sean Pollock
41:16with 2 for 16
41:18from his 8 overs
41:19Matthews 2 for 30
41:21in 9.3
41:22De Villiers 2 for 27
41:24and Simcox 2 for 38
41:26South Africa then
41:28picking up full points
41:29from the game at the end
41:30230 all out
41:31in their 50 over
41:32the top score
41:33of 38 from Gary Kirsten
41:35pick of the English bowlers
41:37Martin with 3 for 33
41:382 wickets apiece
41:40for Goff and Dominic Cork
41:41England
41:43falling short by 78 runs
41:45152 all out
41:47from 44.3 overs
41:48a top score of 46
41:50from Graham Thorpe
41:514 of the South African
41:53bowlers picking up
41:542 wickets apiece
41:54Pollock
41:55De Villiers
41:56Matthews
41:56and Pat Simcox
41:57I don't think the World Cup
42:00can be won by a team
42:01playing conservative
42:02cricket
42:02I think you would have
42:04to be aggressive
42:04at some point or the other
42:06you would have to take
42:07a few risks
42:07you would have to do it
42:08your way
42:09you would have to know
42:10what your strengths are
42:11and you would
42:13I don't think you can
42:14play a sort of very
42:16you cannot wait for the
42:20opposition to make
42:21mistakes for you
42:22I don't think a World Cup
42:23can be won playing cricket
