People shelter on roof as Japan issues tsunami evacuation warning
Aerial views showed people taking shelter on top of the Iburitobu Fire Department in Mukawa town, near the coastline of Hokkaido in northern Japan on Wednesday after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake which struck off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
The JMA later upgraded its warning, saying it expected waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) to reach large coastal areas starting around 0100 GMT. National broadcaster NHK said evacuation orders had been issued by the government across a large part of Japan's Pacific coast.
Factory workers and residents in Hokkaido were evacuated to a hill overlooking the ocean, broadcaster TBS announced.
