Police are yet to say whether a 'wanted man' was armed when he was shot by specialist officers during a confrontation behind a north Queensland shopping centre on Sunday. An investigation is now underway into what is the fourth police-involved shooting in the region so far this year.

00:10The union says a 29 year old man was deemed high risk and specialist officers were flown in from Brisbane to arrest him Sunday afternoon.
00:20He had an extensive history of violence and weapons offences and that's why the appropriate unit was sent up to Townsville
00:28to bring this man into custody.
00:30During his arrest the man was shot by police, first aid was rendered and he remains in a serious condition in Townsville Hospital.
00:39I expect that a key part of the investigation will be looking at the alleged offender's actions as well as alleged threats that he made at the time police confronted him from a concealed space.
00:51Officers won't say if the man was armed at the time as it's now subject to an ethical standards command investigation.
00:59The test reinforces a dynamic nature and the challenges that our police officers face every day when they go about their duties.
