00:00This season marks the Penguins
00:0250th anniversary and throughout
00:05the year we will celebrate the
00:06great teams and outstanding
00:08players of the franchise.
00:10There's been much to celebrate
00:11throughout the Penguins rich
00:12history including this past
00:14season of course when the Pens
00:15won their fourth Stanley Cup.
00:17Tonight we celebrate the early
00:19years and those players who
00:21paved the way for success.
00:25Good evening ladies and
00:25gentlemen I'm Mike Lang.
00:27This season Pittsburgh is proud
00:29to celebrate their 50th
00:30anniversary in the NHL.
00:32The Penguins early years aren't
00:34so much remembered for winning
00:35as it was about cultivating the
00:37NHL experience in Pittsburgh
00:39and simply surviving as an NHL
00:41franchise.
00:42So tonight we take you back to
00:44the very beginning with a quick
00:46look at the early years from
00:471967 to 1975.
00:51Although still years away from
00:52championship glory this was the
00:54foundation that was laid for the
00:56Pittsburgh Penguins franchise we
00:58know today.
00:59It's the early years right now.
01:06Pittsburgh was totally in need of
01:07a revitalization.
01:08Pittsburgh would never be
01:10considered a big league city
01:12without having a big league
01:14hockey team.
01:16Jack McGregor was a local state
01:18senator.
01:19He wasn't the individual owner but
01:22he led a group of local businessmen
01:24some of the great names in
01:25Pittsburgh history including Hines
01:27and Mellon to invest in this
01:29concept of an NHL team coming here
01:31to Pittsburgh.
01:31Our main objective this year is to
01:33finish at or near the top of the
01:35new division and this is what we
01:37intend to do.
01:38It was a city you know coming out
01:40of an era and about to enter a new
01:41one.
01:41The Pittsburgh Penguins one of the
01:44new teams in the National Hockey
01:45League this year.
01:47In back of me you look at the Civic
01:49Arena where we'll play our 37 home
01:52games.
01:53This is the puck that we dropped
01:56that night.
02:06The excitement was took your breath
02:09away.
02:10It was close to a sellout.
02:12It was took many a year before that
02:15many people showed up again.
02:18In the early going we were up and
02:19down kind of team.
02:21And I was bought on a napkin so
02:23Jack Riley told me.
02:25We didn't have that superstar that
02:29carries you up and I thought at one
02:31point maybe Breer was the guy.
02:33They won't leave you alone so I
02:35just if they gave me a stick I gave
02:37a mistake that's all.
02:39I remember Jack Riley telling us
02:40about Michel Breer when he drafted
02:42him.
02:43He was excited about getting him.
02:44He said he was a talented kid we
02:46were going to like him and boy was he
02:47going to be good.
02:49Phil Apps, Lowell McDonald, Jean
02:52Pronovale.
02:53The Century Line as they combined
02:54for a hundred goals.
02:55The team itself actually was a
02:57pretty good hockey club.
02:59I remember playing our first game
03:00against the Cleveland Crusaders.
03:01It was a preseason against the
03:03World Hockey and it was like 2,000
03:04people in a building and I turned
03:06to Jean Pronovale and I said what's
03:08going on?
03:09He goes well you know it's tough to
03:10attract and I remember telling him
03:11if we win they will come.
03:13People like winners.
03:14In the words of Lucky Pierre, Pierre
03:16LaRouche.
03:17People like winners and to that I can
03:19say, Pittsburgh loves winners.
03:21It's time to head upstairs to public
03:24address announcer Ryan Mill for a very
03:26special presentation.
