Community Mural at SLR Local

SLR Local in Fratton held a community design event with Seekers Create and young people from Urbond where they created a mural in their offices in Fratton on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

00:00I'm Sarah Rhodes, I'm the owner of SLR Local Recruitment.

00:03Brilliant, so tell me what we're doing here today.

00:06So we launched Local Recruitment in January.

00:09We invited lots of people to come to the launch

00:11and we had Seekers Create here

00:14who we basically engaged with our community

00:17asking why is Portsmouth important to them

00:20and what does Portsmouth, what joy does it bring them.

00:23Lots of ideas went down and we've invited Urban,

00:26the children from Urban, to create our mural

00:29alongside Seekers Create.

00:31So we've got a nice big colourful bit of art in the office

00:34that is embodying all the reasons why we love our city.

00:38Why is it important to obviously get local children

00:42and communities involved in things like this?

00:46When I was 14, 15, I didn't really have anywhere to go

00:51that kind of embraced me within the community.

00:54So it was very much just hanging out

00:56on the streets with my friends

00:58and I think the importance of Urbond

01:00and creating these spaces where the children can come,

01:03be together, do creative things, do sports

01:06is really, really important.

01:08So for me as a business,

01:09I want to be able to give that back to the community

01:11and create opportunities for children

01:13to be able to come here,

01:15do fun things, but learning and engaging at the same time.

01:19Tell me what the reaction's been like

01:20from the children today.

01:21I think they needed some doughnuts to start off this morning,

01:25a little bit of sugar,

01:26but they have really embraced it.

01:28They've loved having the spray cans and doing the art.

01:32Yeah, it's been a really fun energy.

01:35So tell me a little bit more about SLR Local Recruit.

01:38So SLR Local Recruit started in January.

01:41SLR Marine Recruit has been established for eight years,

01:44but we weren't really doing a lot in our own community.

01:47So since launching in January,

01:48we now have a lot of jobs within our city

01:51and we are very passionate that we're putting local people

01:54into local jobs.

01:57We want to be known as the number one recruitment company

01:59in the city that helps people get employed

02:02in great opportunities on our doorstep.
