Many students are currently going through university clearing. Do you think university is the best route for young people or are trades & apprenticeships a better choice?
Transcript
00:00I didn't go to university until I was a mature student, so I worked for quite a few years
00:04and then I went to university and I found a course that would definitely lead to a job,
00:10so I think the problem with a lot of university courses is people just pick any course,
00:15but it's not necessarily work. Apprenticeships any day, learn as you go along, getting paid,
00:21unless you want a high-end, you don't want to be a surgeon or something like that,
00:25but I think on the whole apprenticeships are far better.
00:28The good thing about this country is that we have different routes that will work for different
00:33people and we shouldn't try and force ourselves into one single route every time.
00:37The point that I try and tell my little boy is even if you don't know what you're doing when you're 18,
00:42it doesn't matter because you can always go back in the future and it's, you know,
00:46I really enjoy being a mature student in my 30s and it's good to experience, you know, work and university I suppose.
00:52I used to teach people with learning disabilities and, you know, get them into employment and the
00:58apprenticeships are just better.
