00:00Outrage in Cameroon over the disqualification of Maurice Kanto from October's presidential election.
00:06Of the 83 applications submitted to ELECAM, the country's election oversight body, only 13 were approved.
00:14For the opposition MRC, the decision to bar Kanto from running is aimed at removing one of President Beer's main rivals.
00:21Our candidate was arbitrarily refused to be shortlisted by ELECAM.
00:28ELECAM is violating the electoral court. ELECAM is violating the constitution of this country.
00:34So we have noted, and communists and the world have noted, that in the first decision of ELECAM,
00:39ELECAM has been pressed by the power that be to say something against the law.
00:45And we are very confident that the constitutional court, which is made of magistrates of high standards,
00:52will look at the law, what is required for the presidential election, and look at the documents Maurice Kanto gave.
00:57Rejected candidates had 48 hours to contest the decision.
01:02Maurice Kanto's team says it complied with the deadline and filed its appeal on time.
01:08The decision is expected in two months.
01:11We are not expecting much from them, but we are saying Maurice Kanto's candidature is suffering from no effect, nothing against the law.
01:21The law is on our side.
01:23And if the constitutional council that is put up by the president, Paul Bia,
01:29his mission is to ensure the regularity and application of the law as it is.
01:35So we are expecting that all the documents, which are only four in number, Maurice Kanto will be validated if the constitutional council is taking up its responsibility.
01:46Kanto ran under the banner of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy, or MANADEM.
01:52ELECAM says MANADEM supported another candidate and therefore can't support Kanto.
01:58So we are saying CPDM has several lists.
02:02UPC has several lists.
02:04UNIVER has several lists.
02:06MANADEM has several lists.
02:07Why only Maurice Kanto and MANADEM when the other people too have several lists?
02:12So you see that there is some degree of inequity and, of course, hatred, injustice, who are going to look at it at the low cost, because the court is very reasonable.
02:28The presidential election is scheduled for the 12th of October, and so it is impossible to believe Paul Bia's candidacy for an eighth term, those of Gabriel Vigie, VCRN, and Joshua Osi of the SDF have also been validated.
02:42The constitutional council's decision regarding Maurice Kanto is eagerly awaited.
