On July 27, a passenger train derailed near the town of Riedlingen in south-western Germany, leaving three people dead and at least 41 injured. Authorities believe heavy rainfall caused a sewage shaft to overflow, triggering a landslide that led to the crash. Among the victims were the train’s driver and a staff member. With around 100 passengers on board and severe storms sweeping the region, questions are now being raised: Was this a natural disaster—or a preventable failure of infrastructure?
