00:00Coming up on Drew. There are no protections for kids on social media. None.
00:04Demi Lovato's revealing the truth about being a child star. When your child is
00:10making the money, that changes the parent-child dynamic. It does. And the
00:15universe rewarded me. The hard work she did to find love. Then Drew's got
00:20hilarious. Coming up. What protections are there for kids in social media? There
00:27are none. There are no protections put in place for kids on social media. And that
00:32has to change.
00:35Hi!
00:36That's 9 Eastern on Global.
00:46Welcome back, everybody!
00:52So, someone is about to walk out those doors right now, who I deeply
00:57deeply, not only respect, but have had the fortunate privilege of becoming
01:02friends with in the last few years. And she has her directorial debut coming out. It is
01:10this extraordinary documentary that she made. I am also lucky enough to
01:15participate in it. You know so much about her. So, let's get into this beautiful,
01:20important, very meaningful film that she made called Child Star. Only she could
01:25tell this, honestly. It's the one and only Demi Lovato, everybody.
01:29Good!
01:30!
01:31!
01:43I am so...
01:44And we stay in touch and text and check in and then you kindly, graciously invited me
02:01into your directorial debut, your beautiful documentary, you know why did you decide to
02:13take this journey and particularly this subject matter who I think you are such an authority
02:19on but you expand it and it's very educational about the history, the present and the future,
02:26about the state of children who put themselves out there or are put out there.
02:33Yeah. So why did you want to do this? I had this idea probably like 10 years ago and I was just
02:39curious. I was curious as to why people put their children in the industry at a young age.
02:45Is it the children that want to be in the industry? I knew from personal experience that's how it was
02:50with me. Me too. But I, you know, I was curious as to how it affects people, why some people go down
02:58a bad path with it and so it was really out of curiosity. Did you feel like you got
03:05that, that thing you were looking for? Well, I definitely feel like I got so much out of this
03:12experience. I learned a lot about myself. I learned a lot about my past, which, you know, being in my
03:2130s, I wanted to look into because it's, I felt like I've come to points in my life where I'm like,
03:29do I want to continue to do this line of work? And I feel, I felt like one of the main reasons
03:35why I did this documentary was to go back and look at the beginning because I can't figure out
03:40my future until I look at the beginning first. And from the documentary, I know this, which I didn't
03:45know, is that you were really influenced by Shirley Temple? I was at such a young age. I just,
03:51I saw Shirley Temple, this, you know, young, young child was living her dream and performing and
04:05that's exactly what I wanted to do. So I really looked up to her. And you really also talk about
04:11things that I've not seen, which is the way that people become a merchandisable commodity
04:19in the sense of like the merchandise business around them becomes its own animal. Yes.
04:25Fascinating. Yes. And I was like on blankets and lunchboxes at seven years old for ET.
04:32And yet, like when you talk to Jojo Siwa and she's in her rooms with just, and you think of like
04:38the Olsen twins back in the day. Okay. You talk about teen role models. Yes. I don't think there should be
04:45those two words should be put together, teenage role model. It's, I agree. I agree.
04:56You also really investigate what is known as the Coogan law. So Jackie Coogan, the big young male star,
05:05sort of a Shirley Temple counterpart, if you will, at that time,
05:08you will, at that time, his parents were spending the money that he was working for. And so a law was
05:16created that we've all benefited from, which is that the money can go into a trust. It also changed like
05:25laws of how many hours kids can work. Good things came out of that legislation.
05:32So now we're living in a world where we have content creators that's going to become a two to
05:38three trillion dollar business they project in the next year or two alone.
05:44What protections are there for kids in social media? There are none. There are no protections put in
05:50place for kids on social media. And that absolutely has to change. And I was aware that when your child
05:59also is the one making the money, that changes the parent-child dynamic. It does.
06:06And so how do we move forward in a world where we don't have any even discussion about the regulations
06:15or the funds or the hours or sort of how behaviorally we all handle this new normal? We've never been here
06:22before. So ideally, what would you like to see happen?
06:26Well, I think that's what's a great part of this documentary is it raises the awareness.
06:30It is. And then we have to make actual change. We have to pass legislation that protects and
06:37compensates kids on social media. I agree. Okay, when we come back, we're going to have so much more
06:46to talk about with the one and only Demi Lovato.
06:57I'm Stanley Tucci.
07:00When you first heard that there were going to be a bunch of kids here and you were going to be talking
07:03to these kids, what went through your head? Oh, just joy. I wish that I had been able to ask
07:11questions to somebody in the industry when I was first starting out. I didn't know what I was getting
07:17myself into. And I didn't have a mentor. There wasn't any guidance. And there definitely is not
07:23a manual on how to navigate this industry at such a young age.
07:29Oh, we're back with my friend, Demi Lovato. Okay, I'm so proud to be a part of this project that I so support.
07:38Thank you. And at the end of it, like, we're here back on the show. We've done this show many
07:46times together. And we walk out like arm and arm through the subway doors there. And we got emotional
07:54because we don't always get these moments of objectivity of how far one has come. And us walking
08:01out those doors. It was like, we made it to the other side. We made it to the other side. I can't believe it.
08:10So I just, I just, I just, it's just, it's just, and we're happy. Yeah, so happy. Self-aware, happy people with
08:26dogs. What is going on with Pickle, the new dog? Pickle is my new baby. Where did you get him? What
08:33was that? You and your beautiful fiance who I just, I love the way he loves you. And I don't know you
08:40guys well enough. And yet it's like, what a great high road choice from you to pick someone who is,
08:48who sees you and loves you and appreciates you for who you are. You know, I think the universe rewarded me
08:55on myself work that I did because right after I did some really hard soul searching, you know,
09:05he appeared into my life and I felt like it was the universe's way of saying like,
09:10okay, you worked on yourself. Like, here's a little, here's the biggest reward of your life.
09:15I believe in that. I do. I really do.
09:19Thank you. And a lot of fun domestication happening. You're taking TikTok by storm.
09:26The cooking show you're doing, I'm here to do this.
09:32Cooking with Demi. I, you, you created a really fun uproar.
09:41It was like, you put aquafaba, which is the water that comes in the can of beans and the hummus,
09:48and like everybody went bananas. It's like good and like, it was just,
09:53that was the trending topic for a little while. I didn't even know that.
09:59It was a whole thing. Oh my God. Okay.
10:03And as your documentary so beautifully demonstrates that if we're willing to go out in the world and
10:11learn and how do we fix the problems or find the solutions to the new world we're living in
10:20and you bring a light and a question to that, that nobody else is asking. So I believe from your
10:26documentary, at least the conversation will start and then change will start to happen as it has in the
10:32history to protect children. So thank you for being a game changer.
10:40All right. Child Star is streaming now on Hulu. It's so good.
10:46Your co-directorial debut is just a phenomenal piece of work. We will be right back.
10:56The iconic
