Ruben Selles discusses Sheffield United's latest friendly victory and the latest on transfers, with BBC Radio Sheffield.
Transcript
00:00First of all then, victory against Chesterfield. What did you see in your side today?
00:05What did you get out of that as a workout?
00:08Well, we are still building our way to do things in the pre-season.
00:12Today was the time for some of them that didn't start the last game to play almost until 70 minutes.
00:19And we want to be a team, as we showed today, that is aggressive, is good in position, vertical.
00:25And I think we saw a lot of that, especially in the first 30 minutes.
00:29Then the pitch got a little bit dry.
00:32And then the end of the first half was not exactly what we expected.
00:36And then the second half, we started in the top of the game and scored a fourth goal.
00:39And then the boys have a strong, good amount of minutes this week.
00:44And we take the game, analyse and move forward.
00:47And yet, towards the end of the game, that's when you personally seemed the most agitated by a need for intensity.
00:54So you want that from start to finish. That's the standard you're trying to set?
00:57Yes, absolutely. Sometimes it's not easy because of the circumstances of the game, the score, the environment.
01:05But yeah, we wanted, especially with the team that we have on the pitch in the last 20 minutes,
01:10the game just got a little bit slower than I expected or I wanted.
01:14So our standard is to play with the intensity that we played in the first 30 minutes and we played some other front leads for 90 minutes.
01:21That's why sometimes now we are a little bit tired in those periods, like between the minute 10 and 20 in the second half.
01:28But it's part of it and we need to ask for more.
01:32But as I say, it's a process.
01:36I realise it's an easy question now as they both scored.
01:40But the two players, Akaki and Kaceres, have played a lot of football for you in pre-season.
01:46Outside of the club, people think that maybe they're here to develop over time and possibly in the reserves.
01:51Do you see them as being part of the squad at the start of the campaign?
01:55Well, for the moment, they are part of our squad.
01:57They are playing minutes, they are dynamic, they are the kind of players that we want.
02:02And where they will be at the end of the transfer window is going to depend on their performance and where we are as a club.
02:08We coach all those players.
02:11It doesn't matter who it is right now playing for us.
02:13Like they are first team players, we develop them.
02:15And for us, the world development is for everyone, not only for the players that are below certain edges.
02:22Just everyone needs to go up at least one level.
02:25And yeah, it doesn't matter who it is.
02:28So I'm satisfied with what they have been doing.
02:30Obviously, we have our internal discussions about what we need in the market.
02:34But as I say, I work with them like they are going to be our players for the rest of the season and they are doing a good job.
02:40As it's only been a couple of days,
02:42but how pleased are you that Barry looks as though he is familiar with his surroundings
02:46to set up two goals in this pre-season friendly today?
02:50Well, we know what we went with Louis.
02:52That threat on the left-hand side with a lot of end product, dynamic, aggressive in the pressure.
02:59And he has been working really hard in the pre-season with Aston Villa.
03:02So it was ideal for him today to play some minutes.
03:06Potentially, probably he has not the level of our boys in terms of what we are doing things.
03:11But he will catch it up.
03:12So I'm pleased with him going through those 60-65 minutes.
03:15I think he played at the end.
03:17And hopefully he will have more to offer for us.
03:21Yeah, you mentioned the market, the transfer market.
03:23When we spoke to you last time, you were sort of hopeful in the next four or five days.
03:27It's not quite reached that yet.
03:28But have things progressed at all with regard to incomings?
03:31Yes, sometimes it's not that easy because obviously it becomes a little bit special to come and play in England
03:38after you went out of the European Union.
03:42So sometimes you need to get those permissions, embassies, visas and those things.
03:47So that sometimes slow down the tempo that I wanted.
03:50But it's just a matter of that, really.
03:53Forgive me.
03:53We are talking about Soumari then, because we spoke about him before.
03:57And is he the guy that ideally will be next?
04:01Well, we are talking about the players that we are trying to work on.
04:04So if Soumari is another one, the club will announce it in the proper time.
04:09But just in terms of time scale, if you are at the kind of behest of passport officers,
04:14he's sort of reasonably confident they'll be here soon?
04:17Yes, of course.
04:19It takes long for some other cases.
04:21But in that concrete case that we are managing right now, it should be soon here.
04:27Since we last saw you, there's been a bit of talk about Kiefer Moore potentially leaving
04:32and going to Wrexham.
04:34Firstly, is that true?
04:37Well, Kiefer is our player.
04:39As you know, I don't manage those proposals or gossips or offers.
04:42And then I don't think he was ready to play for us today.
04:46So I decided to play with some other players that we want to see, like Tom Cannon today.
04:50He was exceptional today in the press and the way that we do it.
04:53And yeah, nothing special from my side on that comment.
04:57He still was here.
04:58He still was doing his job.
05:00And how it works, it's a team and he's part of us.
05:03And if in the future something happens, let's see.
05:06Just finally, from me, do you find yourself at this stage with regard to transfers and incomings
05:11and outgoings, you're actually spinning quite a few plates that you'd like to get done before
05:16the season starts?
05:17As a manager, you always try to get the players that you want as early as possible because
05:22that means you have entirely precision to work with them.
05:24So yeah, the sooner is always the better.
05:26But as I say, the market is fluid and sometimes you cannot control those things.
05:30For the moment, the boys that have come in have done a good job and we have a really
05:34good team, the ones that remain from last season.
05:39And yes, I wanted players earlier, but I understand that is what it is.
