Trump Protests in Aberdeen
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Alison Campsey. I'm from the Scotsman. I'm in Aberdeen covering the Stop Trump Coalition
00:07protest in the city centre which has been held against the President's visit to Scotland over
00:14the next few days. There's been a good few hundred people here representing a vast array of interests
00:21and groups. There's been some really cracking and humorous signs being held up by folk who've
00:29gathered here. Some very much written in the spirit of Janie Godley. You can imagine what they say. I
00:35don't know if I'm allowed to say it here. And there's been, you know, some humor injected into
00:42what is actually a gathering with a very serious message from the people who have taken time to
00:50come here. There's been much chat about Gaza, about starvation in Gaza and about the devastating
00:59scenes that we're seeing there day in and day out and how Trump is complicit in these scenes.
01:06And every time that Gaza is mentioned or Free Palestine is mentioned, there is a massive response
01:12from the crowd. It's obviously something that people here feel very, very strongly about and feel very
01:19strongly that they should be seen to be protesting against this. Now, Maggie Chapman, the MSP, the Green MSP
01:30for the North East of Scotland, opened up speeches saying that Trump was very much not welcome in Scotland,
01:37nor was his politics, which he said had no reflection of how Scottish people felt. And Trump's politics
01:45have been channeled through many of the speakers here who are speaking out against, speaking in
01:53favour of climate justice, speaking in favour of trans rights and the right to protest. So
02:00every speaker here, whichever group they're representing, is channeling Trump, his politics
02:06and beliefs through what has been said in Aberdeen this afternoon. Now, we know now that there are more
02:13protests due when President Trump heads north from Turnberry to many in Aberdeenshire, not far from
02:21here. And it's expected that folk will be gathering to welcome him when he touches down at the start of Nixon.
