00:00Le trial de former Congolais président Joseph Kabila
00:04was held at a military court
00:05in the Gombe district of Kinshasa.
00:08Mr. Kabila is currently out of the country,
00:10but he was charged with murder, torture, rape
00:13and plotting to overthrow the government in absentia.
00:16The charges stem from his alleged support
00:18for the M-23 rebels
00:19who have captured swathes of territory in eastern DRC.
00:23He has previously denied supporting the rebel group.
00:26Joseph Kabila led the DRC for 18 years
00:29and handed over power to Felix Chisekedi in 2019.
00:33But the two leaders fell out in 2020
00:35after President Chisekedi
00:37canceled a power-sharing agreement they had signed.
00:40Kabila later left the country to live in South Africa.
00:43In May this year, he returned to the country
00:45and visited cities held by the M-23 rebels in eastern DRC.
00:49That angered Congolese authorities,
00:51which led them to lift his immunity
00:53as a senator for life to allow his prosecution.
00:56The case has been adjourned to July 31st.
