Revenge of the Zombies is a 1943 comedy horror film, directed by Steve Sekely, starring John Carradine and Gale Storm. The film was a follow up to the horror-comedy King of the Zombies (1941) with Mantan Moreland reprising his role as Jeff and Madame Sul-Te-Wan returning as a different character. The film is both a sequel and a partial remake of the original film. Both films feature the concept of a mad scientist married to a zombie wife. In this film, the female zombie has retained her free will, and refuses to be controlled.

Plot:
Scott Warrington (Mauritz Hugo) returns to his childhood home in Louisiana after learning that his deceased sister, Lila (Veda Ann Borg), may have been poisoned. He brings a detective (Robert Lowery) with him, and they switch identities to protect Scott. At first, they find only Lila's sad husband, Dr. von Altermann (John Carradine). Secretly, however, von Altermann is a Nazi who has been perfecting a way to turn the dead, including Lila, into an army of zombies who will serve Hitler.

00:03:29That's to say, get picks, shovels, go to work.
00:03:57You, Pete, watch Dr. Keating's house.
00:04:06You wait here, Jeff.
00:04:26You, Pete, watch out.
00:04:32You, Pete, watch out.
00:04:34I've been watching for you.
00:04:35Barry Adams, Dr. Keating.
00:04:37I brought him along to investigate this matter.
00:04:39I'm glad to know you.
00:04:45I'm glad to know you.
00:04:47Drink.
00:04:56I came as soon as I received your wire.
00:04:58It was a shock.
00:04:59It was a shock.
00:05:00You don't seriously think there was anything irregular about Madame von Altemann's death, do you, doctor?
00:05:04I feel quite sure that the circumstances were too suspicious to be ignored.
00:05:09My sister died suddenly?
00:05:11Certainly.
00:05:19I met her only the day before.
00:05:21I met her only the day before, and she seemed well enough then.
00:05:23From what I can learn, the attack began with a feeling of drowsiness.
00:05:24In a few hours, she passed into a coma from which she never awakened.
00:05:29I made a determined effort to see her, but Dr. von Altemann refused me permission.
00:05:34So what could I do?
00:05:35He was her attending physician as well as her husband.
00:05:38Refused you?
00:05:40But you've known Lila all her life.
00:05:42The death certificate specifies a heart attack, but I know of no heart ailment indicated by those symptoms.
00:05:49They suggested something more sinister?
00:05:52They suggested poison.
00:06:17Finished.
00:06:18Finished, master.
00:06:48Finished.
00:06:49Extra.
00:06:50He wanted them to be a pretty name for you.
00:06:55It'll do.
00:06:56Take it out.
00:07:18THE END
00:07:48But what can we do now?
00:08:12See to it that your sister is buried immediately.
00:08:14Well, let's go then.
00:08:16I'm getting kind of curious to meet this guy.
00:08:17Can you tell us if any of the servants are left there who might recognize me?
00:08:21No.
00:08:22Von Alterman got rid of them all.
00:08:24But you've been away a good many years.
00:08:27I don't think anyone around here is likely to remember you except me.
00:08:32But why do you ask?
00:08:33Since Von Alterman doesn't know him, I intend to pass myself off as Scott Warrington while
00:08:38Scott pretends to be me.
00:08:40Then if any funny business starts, I can handle it.
00:08:42But you feel sure you can carry through such an imposture?
00:08:46For a while anyway.
00:08:47Until we have time to make up our minds about this guy.
00:08:50We can go in my car.
00:08:51Well, I only hope we're still in time.
00:08:56And tan and the curly hair, shoes and stock is about to wear.
00:09:00Oh, Durant, tan.
00:09:01I'm in the groove, ain't I?
00:09:09Holy jumping Jupiter.
00:09:11Mr. Scott.
00:09:13Mr. Scott.
00:09:13What's the matter, Jack?
00:09:14Is you all right?
00:09:15Why shouldn't I be all right?
00:09:16On account of the face that I saw peeping at me in them bushes.
00:09:19Face?
00:09:19What face?
00:09:19Right over there in them bushes.
00:09:28What's the matter with you, Jeff?
00:09:29There's no one in here.
00:09:32They're all right.
00:09:33They're right there.
00:09:34Mr. Beazlebuff, the devil himself.
00:09:36Mr. Larry, I'm going to get out of here.
00:09:38Now, take it easy, Jack.
00:09:39He sure come a long way to find trouble.
00:09:41You saw anyone who was probably just one of the natives.
00:09:43Native from where?
00:09:44Now, ordinary people don't go around with horns.
00:09:47Mr. Larry, I saw them sprouting out of their heads.
00:09:50Oh, don't be foolish, Jack.
00:09:51What are you trying to do?
00:09:52Scare us?
00:09:52With the competition I got around here, I can't scare nobody.
00:09:56Mr. Larry, I saw them looking at me just as plain as they.
00:10:00With red, big, red fire eyes.
00:10:02With wiggling horns and lashing tails.
00:10:04Then what happened?
00:10:05Then they disappeared in the smoke.
00:10:07Blue smoke with red spots in it.
00:10:09Well, we can't waste any more time around here.
00:10:11Let's go over and see what Dr. Von Alderman has to say.
00:10:13Them are the best words I heard tonight.
00:10:14All right, let's go.
00:10:14Mr. Scott.
00:10:15Mr. Scott, you want me to wait here by myself again?
00:10:45Yes, right here.
00:10:53Good evening, Nanny Bueller.
00:10:55This is Mr. Warrington.
00:10:57Please tell your master he's here.
00:10:59Mr. Warrington?
00:11:01The master's gonna be real pleased to see him.
00:11:08This way, gentlemen, if you please.
00:11:11The light done bumped out on us here in this hall.

00:11:26Mr. Warrington?

00:11:32This is my friend, Larry Adams.
00:11:34I'm Jennifer Rand, Dr. Von Alterman's secretary.
00:11:37You heard?
00:11:39Yes, Dr. Keating notified me.
00:11:41Dr. Von Alterman wanted to, but he didn't know how to reach you.
00:11:43It must have been a dreadful shock.
00:11:45It was to us.
00:11:46A great shock.
00:11:48You better find your master and tell him
00:11:50Madame Von Alterman's brother is here.
00:11:52I think he's in the chapel with her.

00:12:00Is it still her dad?
00:12:01It must have gone and brought up as a queen!
00:12:02It must be my mother.

00:12:57I will come at once.
00:12:59See to the body of your mistress quickly.
00:13:01Understand?
00:13:09I'll take care of her,
00:13:11like I always take care of her.
00:13:15Uh, Miss Wren,
00:13:17have you been with Bon Alterman long?
00:13:19About six months now.
00:13:21Then you must have seen a good deal of my sister.
00:13:23Naturally, I live here in the house, you see.
00:13:25I understand the attack came on quite suddenly.
00:13:27She hadn't been ill and...
00:13:29No, even Dr. Bon Alterman had no idea her heart was weak.
00:13:33She was so active always,
00:13:35and she looked so well.
00:13:37Yes, so I understand.
00:13:39You know, it frightens one a little to realize
00:13:41how swiftly these things can happen.
00:13:43Mm-hmm, I should think it might.
00:13:45Tell me, you like Bon Alterman and the work here?
00:13:47Very much indeed.
00:13:49He's been awfully patient with me and kind.
00:13:51You see, I'm not very competent, really.
00:13:53In fact, I had a hard time getting a place before I came here.
00:13:57And my sister, was he very kind to her, too?
00:14:01Why, he worshipped her.
00:14:03I've never seen...
00:14:13One of you, I understand, is Mr. Wellington.
00:14:15I'm sorry our meeting has to be under such circumstances.
00:14:17We should have met long before.
00:14:19You should have written your sister.
00:14:21But she never wrote.
00:14:23She was very bitter.
00:14:25But it would please her, I think, that you have come now.
00:14:27Dr. Keating, you know, of course.
00:14:29This is my friend, Larry Adams.
00:14:31I'm very happy to offer him, Mr. Adams, even in this time of trouble.
00:14:33You remain for the funeral, of course.
00:14:35If you'll be good enough to have it soon.
00:14:37Tomorrow.
00:14:39Here in the South, it is not wise to waste time.
00:14:41Many things can happen.
00:14:43Jennifer, my dear, will you be kind enough to see that rooms are prepared for our guests?
00:14:45Certainly.
00:14:47You're very kind.
00:14:49If we won't be intruding, I have a servant with me, too.
00:14:51My driver.
00:14:53You're all very welcome, I'm sure.
00:14:55The storm must have made the roads impossible.
00:14:57May we see, Lila?
00:14:59This way.
00:15:01This way.
00:15:03Come on.
00:15:05Oh, no.
00:15:07Is it true that my temple has Washeels?
00:15:09This way?
00:15:11It's all a middleman.
00:15:13Could you stop showing up or is for here?
00:15:15This way.
00:15:17Well, I can't think of it all.
00:15:19Like.
00:15:21Oh, no pass me on.
00:15:23That was my fall!
00:15:25This way!
00:15:26How did I just have my funeral?
00:15:31One day?
00:15:32One day?
00:15:33Someone introduced me.
00:15:35Oh, brother, you sure startled me.
00:15:37Is you from New York?
00:15:39You see, I just...

00:15:55Well, you see, what I was gonna say was...
00:15:57Beautiful car.
00:15:59I drove car like this for master.
00:16:03Yeah?
00:16:05When I was alive.
00:16:07Oh, when you was alive. Hmm?
00:16:09When you was alive. That did it, brother.
00:16:17Waiting for me, honey?
00:16:19That's right. I'm to show you the way to the house.
00:16:21You've been this close to me all the time,
00:16:23and I've been wasting my time out front.
00:16:25Of course not. I just came to fetch you.
00:16:27What detained you, woman?
00:16:29I never did think I could find anything that looked like you around this place.
00:16:31And you wouldn't, if I could get away.
00:16:33You don't like this place?
00:16:35And I don't like this place. What are we waiting for?
00:16:37My Aunt Mammy Bueller, she won't give me the money to go, no.
00:16:39I'm getting out of here if I have to walk.
00:16:41I hate this place.
00:16:43And I don't like what's going on here lately.
00:16:45What's going on here lately?
00:16:46You'll find out soon enough.
00:16:47What will I find out?
00:16:49You'll see with your own eyes.
00:16:51What will I see?
00:16:52Things walking. Ain't got no business walking.
00:16:54What thing?
00:16:56You wanna see?
00:16:57I'll show you.
00:16:58Wait a minute, honey.
00:16:59I don't insist in seeing you nothing. Wait a minute.
00:17:05Is it much further?
00:17:07No.
00:17:08Tonight I must have given you the laryngitis, didn't it, honey?
00:17:11Man, these must try good.
00:17:14Here is cemetery.
00:17:17I thank you.
00:17:18But I got to go home. I forgot something.
00:17:20But you forget.
00:17:21I forgot to stay there.
00:17:23Don't be afraid.
00:17:25Dead can't hurt you.
00:17:27No, but they'll make you hurt yourself.
00:17:32Where?
00:17:36Where?
00:17:41What was that?
00:17:42Just a zombie.
00:17:44Just a zombie?
00:17:45Where am I?
00:17:52I don't know where you at.
00:17:54But thirty seconds from now, I'm gonna be eleven miles away from here.
00:18:00Goodbye.
00:18:03I'm sure you'll excuse me, gentlemen.
00:18:05I should like to spend the last few moments with my wife.
00:18:08Lazarus will conduct her to your rooms.
00:18:10We can take turns, if you like.
00:18:11We're all watched together.
00:18:12You really think it's necessary?
00:18:13I think it imperative that we see that no unholy rites are performed over Lila's body.
00:18:28Call her, Lazarus.
00:18:30But softly.
00:18:31Uh, excuse me, gentlemen, but I got to be with somebody that I knows.
00:18:46What's the matter?
00:18:47Well, my head keeps telling my feet that there ain't no zombies.
00:18:50But my feet ain't convinced.
00:18:51Zombies?
00:18:52Yes.
00:18:53You know, I know it ain't nothing like that when I'm with friends and the like.
00:18:56But when I'm in the dark, I trust nobody.
00:18:59You're a drunk.
00:19:00No, I ain't.
00:19:01I've been running.
00:19:02Ain't nothing did what I've seen come out of no bottle.
00:19:12Lyla.
00:19:16Lyla.
00:19:21Go.
00:19:30Go to the laboratory.
00:19:51Lyla.
00:19:52It's a trick of some kind.
00:19:53It must be.
00:19:54She's been drugged.
00:19:55I wish I could encourage you to think so, but I'm afraid my fears have been realized.
00:20:05You still think she's dead and he's able to make her walk?
00:20:06How ridiculous.
00:20:07Impossible.
00:20:08I'm sorry, Doc, but I'm afraid I feel the same way about it.
00:20:09Let's find Von Altam and tell him what we've seen and see how he works it out.
00:20:10Read what I dictated this afternoon, please.
00:20:11It is my hypothesis that metabolism, although vital to prenatal and adolescent development,
00:20:15is not essential in later life.
00:20:16Tissues and cells, once fully matured, can be sustained indefinitely by a process of inter-refrigeration.
00:20:19It is my hypothesis that metabolism, although vital to prenatal and adolescent development,
00:20:23is not essential in later life.
00:20:25Tissues and cells, once fully matured, can be sustained indefinitely by a process of inter-refrigeration.
00:20:29Yes.
00:20:30Yes.
00:20:31What is it?
00:20:32Sorry to disturb you, but something quite unbelievable is happening.
00:20:33Yes.
00:20:34The body of your wife is dead and dead.
00:20:35It is my hypothesis that metabolism, although vital to prenatal and adolescent development,
00:20:38is not essential in later life.
00:20:40Tissues and cells, once fully matured, can be sustained indefinitely by a process of inter-refrigeration.
00:20:46Yes.
00:20:47Yes, what is it?
00:20:50Sorry to disturb you, but something quite unbelievable is happening.
00:20:57Yes.
00:20:58The body of your wife is not in a casket.
00:21:00My dear fellow, you're talking absolute nonsense.
00:21:02Not at all.
00:21:03As a matter of fact, we just saw her leave it.
00:21:05You saw her leave it?
00:21:06Exactly.
00:21:07We all did.
00:21:08What's the meaning of it?
00:21:10Forgive me, but what you say is clearly impossible.
00:21:25You've been on guard here since I left you?
00:21:27Yes, master.
00:21:28I see cold.
00:21:29Have you a small mirror, Miss Rand?
00:21:30Oh, yes.
00:21:32I see cold.
00:21:33Have you a small mirror, Miss Rand?
00:21:34Oh, yes.
00:21:37I see cold.
00:21:38I see cold.
00:21:39Have you a small mirror, Miss Rand?
00:21:40Oh, yes.
00:21:44She's not breathing.
00:21:45But look.
00:21:46She's smiling now.
00:21:47She wasn't before.
00:21:48How can you all behave like this?
00:21:49It's cruel.
00:21:50It's unpardonable.
00:21:51It's unpardonable.
00:21:52You've had a long trip, and I'm perhaps overtired.
00:21:53You've had a long trip, and I'm perhaps over tired.
00:21:55She's not breathing.
00:22:02But look, she's smiling now.
00:22:05She wasn't before.
00:22:07How can you all behave like this?
00:22:10It's cruel.
00:22:12It's unpardonable.
00:22:15You've had a long trip and you're perhaps over tired.
00:22:19Our nerves sometimes play us strange tricks.
00:22:22Here we go.
00:22:39Master say, follow me.
00:22:42Very good.
00:22:52Come in.
00:23:05Dr. von Alterman?
00:23:16Commander von Hofmannsthal has received a report from me that my experiment is now successfully completed.
00:23:21Yes, Doctor.
00:23:22He sent me to inquire into the nature of it.
00:23:24Is he prepared to arrange my transportation home?
00:23:26Yes, I'm to arrange that.
00:23:28Will there be much apparatus?
00:23:30Naturally.
00:23:31I have one subject to demonstrate my achievement.
00:23:34You shall see.
00:23:40Go to the chapel.
00:23:41Sound the call.
00:23:48Would you explain your experiment to me, Dr. von Alterman?
00:23:51Certainly.
00:23:52Please sit down.
00:23:53I've only tried to explain it and they wouldn't believe me.
00:23:57I am prepared to supply my country with a new army,
00:24:04numbering as many thousands as are required.
00:24:08A new army?
00:24:10An army that will not need to be fed.
00:24:14It cannot be stopped by bullets.
00:24:16That is, in fact, invincible.
00:24:18Sounds impossible.
00:24:20An army of robots or automatons?
00:24:23An army of the living dead.
00:24:26What?
00:24:27Surely you heard me drilling them before you knocked at the door?
00:24:32I've heard something.
00:24:34Wait.
00:24:41Come a few steps closer, my dear.
00:24:44My wife does not answer your greeting because she is dead.
00:24:57Yes?
00:24:58Approach her and satisfy yourself.
00:25:06Give him your hand to kiss, my dear.
00:25:08You didn't believe me, did you?
00:25:14I'll prove it to you beyond a doubt.
00:25:30It's weird.
00:25:31Unbelievable.
00:25:32Forgive me here, doctor, but...
00:25:34I find it difficult to realize you've chosen your own wife for this dreadful experiment.
00:25:40I had already experimented with various subjects.
00:25:43Lazarus who brought you in was one of them.
00:25:47Now, what greater destiny could my wife have achieved than to serve me?
00:25:52And through me, our country?
00:25:55That is so.
00:25:56I shall take her there.
00:25:59And demonstrate the zombies must obey their master.
00:26:02Against an army of zombies, no armies could stand.
00:26:06Or even blown half to bits.
00:26:09Undaunted by fire and gas.
00:26:11Zombies would fight on so long as the brain cells which receive and execute commands still remained intact.
00:26:17How?
00:26:21No.
00:26:22No.
00:26:27Watch this.
00:26:29Your brain works independently of mine.
00:26:32Go back.
00:26:39I must make still another experiment.
00:26:41Apparently I've succeeded too well this time.
00:26:44I must now paralyze certain portions of the brain.
00:26:48So that my subjects can neither question nor reason.
00:26:51Only hear and obey.
00:26:53Then at last we'll have an army perfect for our purpose.
00:26:56When will you be prepared to come then?
00:26:58I'll let you know.
00:27:00I shan't need more than a day or two.
00:27:02I have already a subject close at hand.
00:27:05When I've dealt with him, my discovery will be perfected.
00:27:14Lazarus will take you back where he comes to.
00:27:18Lazarus?
00:27:20Ah, yes.
00:27:22In the Bible.
00:27:23He rose from the dead.
00:27:25Auf Wiedersehen.
00:27:26Auf Wiedersehen.
00:27:27I had no opportunity last night to speak to you about your sister's estate.
00:27:37I can guess what you want to tell me.
00:27:39She left nothing to me.
00:27:40On the contrary, she left everything to you.
00:27:42To me?
00:27:44And I believe her fortune was rather large.
00:27:47No.
00:27:49She wished to have the rule drawn in this way and I offered no objection.
00:27:51After all, I'm a wealthy man.
00:27:52I don't believe it.
00:27:53It can't be true.
00:27:54I'm just trying to...
00:27:55You need me be rather concerned, Mr. Adams.
00:27:58Naturally, I'm concerned.
00:28:00I am not Mr. Adams.
00:28:02I'm Scott Warrington.
00:28:06I suspected that from the first.
00:28:09You distrusted me from what you've heard of me.
00:28:11Oh, I can understand.
00:28:13Would it be possible for us to see your wife's will?
00:28:16Surely, as a detective, you know that such a procedure would be unusual.
00:28:19However, I'll see if I can find it for you.
00:28:21Madam von Alterman's body's gone.
00:28:44You're responsible for this outrage? What have you done with it? Tell me!
00:28:46I know nothing about it.
00:28:48For a long time you've been attempting to interfere in my affairs.
00:28:51When my wife was ill, able to see no one, you created a scene here.
00:28:53You sent for Warrington and his friend, the detective.
00:28:56What do you think? What do you want?
00:28:58What do you expect to accomplish?
00:28:59Dr. Keating had nothing to do with this.
00:29:01We've all been together since we left this room last night.
00:29:03If you really don't know anything about the disappearance of the body,
00:29:06I suggest you notify the police.
00:29:07No.
00:29:08No, that would mean the most unpleasant publicity.
00:29:14I'll investigate this matter myself.
00:29:21If the body doesn't turn up, there can't be any funeral.
00:29:24Exactly.
00:29:25I'm afraid we've wasted her time in coming here.
00:29:28Unless you've got a system in calling in the police.
00:29:32I will if we don't find out what's become of her.
00:29:34You must know something.
00:29:35You're always underfoot, listening and watching.
00:29:38You must have seen or heard something.
00:29:39I ain't seen nothing and I ain't heard nothing.
00:29:42Nothing. Less than nothing.
00:29:45You sure you don't know where she is, master?
00:29:48You sure you can't guess?
00:29:50Well, how would I be asking you if I knew?
00:29:53Well, you might, master, if you wanted to pretend you didn't know.
00:29:57All I can tell you is that the doors and windows were barred on the inside.
00:30:02So no one on the outside could have gotten into this house during the night.
00:30:06Someone on the inside raised the bars, though.
00:30:09Because when I came downstairs this morning, the front door was open a little.
00:30:13The lines must go out and search the grounds.
00:30:16Yes, master.
00:30:18Kind of creepy.
00:30:20When the dead walks of its own will, no telling what they'll do next.
00:30:24You're out and gather me some swamp lilies.
00:30:26Bring them to my laboratory at once.
00:30:28Yes, master.
00:30:30What do you want with swamp lilies?
00:30:32I reckon he got a use for them.
00:30:34You and Jeff better go fetch him some.
00:30:37Go fetch him some?
00:30:39And when you goes to pull the blooms, don't put your fingers to your mouth.
00:30:43For the juice from them lilies is rank poison.
00:30:46Or we'll go poison.
00:30:48Rosella, you go by yourself.
00:30:50See, one's company and two's a crowd.
00:30:52I'm going to stay here with Mammy Bueller.
00:30:54And the worst of it is, you don't know when it gets you.
00:30:56You has no pain.
00:30:58You just get sliceless until you just doze us off.
00:31:01Hey, ain't that the way that Mr. Scott's sister died?
00:31:05More than one died that way.
00:31:10Well, what are you going to do?
00:31:11Just stand around here and wait for something to turn up?
00:31:13Yep.
00:31:14No use running around in circles just to look busy.
00:31:16How about getting some air?
00:31:17It'll do us all good.
00:31:18All right.
00:31:19Anything is better than just standing around here.
00:31:21Coming?
00:31:22No, I think I'll just stick around here for the present.
00:31:25I see.
00:31:26Only remember, I didn't bring you along just for the ride.
00:31:32This here swamp's a mighty queer place.
00:31:34Lots of folks has died here.
00:31:36Sure enough?
00:31:38You got to take care of where you step so he isn't sucked in.
00:31:42I expect there's lots of bodies in this here swamp.
00:31:44You don't say.
00:31:45Ain't I telling you?
00:31:46Strangers that wanders through here is gone for they can call for help.
00:31:51And the more they struggle, the quicker they sink.
00:31:54No.
00:31:57Help!
00:31:58Load at me!
00:31:59Got me out!
00:32:00Somebody come get me!
00:32:01Talk to me!
00:32:02Good gracious of me!
00:32:03What happened?
00:32:05Now look at here!
00:32:07Curious.
00:32:08No one has sent flowers or turned up to sympathize.
00:32:11Haven't they heard about Lila's death in the neighborhood around here?
00:32:13Yes, of course.
00:32:14News travels fast in a district like this where not very much happens.
00:32:18Then why haven't any other friends turned up?
00:32:20They hadn't any friends.
00:32:22Vaughn Altman didn't encourage visitors.
00:32:25And Lila was never interested in the local gentry anyway.
00:32:28Do you mean to say they never saw anyone but each other?
00:32:31And the servants?
00:32:33Oh, Lila used to go into New Orleans now and then on prolonged visits.
00:32:37Ah, it was a strange life for a girl as young as Lila.
00:32:41Was she happy, do you think?
00:32:42I don't know.
00:32:45What's that?
00:32:53It's hers.
00:32:54The one she was wearing.
00:32:57You might take it back to Vaughn Altman.
00:32:59I will look about here.
00:33:00But we agreed not to lose touch with one another while we're stuck in this place.
00:33:03I'll follow you back in ten minutes.
00:33:05I promise, absolutely.
00:33:07Okay.
00:33:12Come in, Dr. Keating.
00:33:13Here it is.
00:33:14At last.
00:33:15To my dearly beloved husband, Max Heinrich von Altman, I give and bequeath all my estate, both real and personal.
00:33:28You know, I shouldn't have shown you this.
00:33:29It's a breach of confidence.
00:33:30So that's the will she signed.
00:33:31Her last will and testament.
00:33:32Are you absolutely certain?
00:33:33Oh, absolutely.
00:33:34Oh, absolutely.
00:33:35I witnessed it before the notary who came with the attorney.
00:33:37Then Vaughn Altman lied to throw us off the scent.
00:33:38Lied?
00:33:39He told us the will was in Scott's favor.
00:33:40He must have known we'd find out the truth in a couple of days.
00:33:41And he said, you know what?
00:33:42What?
00:33:43What?
00:33:44What?
00:33:45What?
00:33:46What?
00:33:47What?
00:33:48What?
00:33:49What?
00:33:50What?
00:33:51What?
00:33:52What?
00:33:53What?
00:33:54What?
00:33:55What?
00:33:56What?
00:33:57What?
00:33:58What?
00:33:59What?
00:34:00What?
00:34:01What?
00:34:02What?
00:34:03What?
00:34:04What?
00:34:06What?
00:34:07What?
00:34:08What?
00:34:10What?
00:34:11I told us the will was in Scott's favor.
00:34:12He must have known we'd find out the truth in a couple of days.
00:34:13And he's much too slick to get himself into a jam like that without a pretty good reason.
00:34:14Perhaps he was only testing Mr. Warington.
00:34:15How's that?
00:34:16Perhaps he thought Mr. Warington wasn't so grieved about his sister's death as anxious about
00:34:20her estate.
00:34:21It's more likely that he deliberately tried to bamboozle us just in case we were getting suspicious.
00:34:25You know, you're wrong about Dr. Von Alterman.
00:34:27You've misjudged him completely.
00:34:29Are you being loyal or dumb?
00:34:32Or are you just covering up for him?
00:34:35You say you're a detective.
00:34:37Find out.
00:34:47Would you want a match?
00:34:51Rosalie, don't look.
00:34:53What do you see there?
00:34:55I don't know whose it is and they can't tell me.
00:34:58And I ain't going to stay here long enough to ask.
00:35:00Let's go down to the house and tell the folks.
00:35:03It's hers, isn't it?
00:35:05Lilith's.
00:35:06She was wearing it.
00:35:08Perhaps.
00:35:10I'll inquire.
00:35:25Well, what's the matter with you now?
00:35:28I just saw a corp down by the swamps.
00:35:30A corp?
00:35:31You don't by any chance mean Madame Von Ulleman's body.
00:35:34No, sir.
00:35:35A strange heat corp.
00:35:36A heat corp?
00:35:37Yes, sir.
00:35:38And he's been shot long deep wide and consecutive.
00:35:40Here.
00:35:46It is right here, Mr. Larris.
00:35:48Yes, sir.
00:35:49Well, it was here.
00:35:50Are you sure you saw it, Jeff?
00:35:52You're not just seeing things again, are you?
00:35:54I'm seeing things, but it's things that I don't want to see.
00:35:57Well, it's not here now.
00:35:58That's plain enough.
00:35:59Looking for something?
00:36:01Oh, yeah.
00:36:02A murdered corpse.
00:36:03Don't think a murderer would leave his victim here, do you?
00:36:07And the swamp close enough to conceal the evidence?
00:36:10No, it doesn't seem likely, does it?
00:36:12I reckon he came around the same way of thinking, too.
00:36:24What's the matter with him?
00:36:26Drive him on.
00:36:28Well...
00:36:32Go after them.
00:36:36This line's dead.
00:36:37Perhaps the storm last night blew down the wires.
00:36:45Is anything wrong?
00:36:46Yes.
00:36:47Dr. Keating is missing.
00:36:48Missing?
00:36:49Since when?
00:36:50I left him out on the grounds over an hour ago, and he said he'd follow me right back in.
00:36:53He hasn't turned up.
00:36:54It's a little early to be concerned, isn't it?
00:36:56I don't think so.
00:36:57Have you found out what happened to Lila's body?
00:36:59No, not yet.
00:37:00Well, I want the police notified without any more delay.
00:37:02Now, will you do it, or shall I?
00:37:04Well, I'll telephone at once, if you wish.
00:37:06Oh, you can't do that, Dr. Von Alterman.
00:37:08I'm sorry.
00:37:09The telephone isn't working.
00:37:13Something really should be done about those wires.
00:37:15I'll send a message to the sheriff.
00:37:17And tell him I'll give him half an hour to get here.
00:37:19What was that?
00:37:20Sounded like Jeff's voice.
00:37:21The cop.
00:37:22Another one?
00:37:23No, sir.
00:37:24The same one again.
00:37:25I recognize the lady on his arms.
00:37:26Come.
00:37:27And come quick.
00:37:28Where is it?
00:37:29In your car.
00:37:30It...
00:37:31Thank God.
00:37:33And he was in no condition to drive.
00:37:39He was in no condition to drive.
00:37:41Is that the cop?
00:37:42No, sir.
00:37:43I'd hear the cop.
00:37:44I'd hear the cop.
00:37:45I'd hear the cop.
00:37:46Recognize the lady on his arms.
00:37:47Come, and come quick.
00:37:48Where is it?
00:37:49In your car.
00:37:58And he was in no condition to drive.
00:38:10I don't care what it costs.
00:38:12I want you to bring enough men to search this whole district
00:38:14and find my sister's body.
00:38:15I want you to locate Dr. Keating, too.
00:38:17I got you.
00:38:18Think you can handle it, Sheriff?
00:38:19You bet I can handle it.
00:38:20And don't overlook Dr. Von Alderman.
00:38:22I feel pretty sure he's at the bottom of this whole thing.
00:38:25Okay.
00:38:26How would you like to proceed?
00:38:28I'd better start by giving this Heine the once-over.
00:38:31I'll get him.
00:38:32Of course you won't let Dr. Von Alderman know he's suspected.
00:38:35Don't worry about that.
00:38:37Just leave everything to me.
00:38:43You know the Sheriff, of course.
00:38:45Yes, I think we've met.
00:38:46I believe we have.
00:38:47Perhaps you'd like to look over the house.
00:38:50I sure would, thoroughly.
00:38:52I want to see the room where she lived,
00:38:54the chapel where her body disappeared from,
00:38:56and also Dr. Keating's room.
00:38:58Come with me.
00:38:59I'll show you.
00:39:08You, of course, understand why I had to suggest this masquerade.
00:39:11They insisted that I send it to the police,
00:39:13and I had no alternative.
00:39:14It's a pleasure to serve you in any way here, Doctor.
00:39:16I must congratulate you upon your excellent impersonation.
00:39:19We are taught to be efficient here, Doctor.
00:39:21Now we have to play their game.
00:39:25Aren't you going to keep an eye on him?
00:39:27Why, don't you trust him either?
00:39:28Sure.
00:39:29But I think you ought to keep an eye on him just the same.
00:39:31He seems to know his business.
00:39:33Maybe you can learn something.
00:39:34Thanks.
00:39:36Maybe I can.
00:40:04Maybe I can.
00:40:07Buy him.
00:40:12Maybe I could help him.
00:40:16Maybe.
00:40:17There should be.
00:40:18Could you give it…
00:40:19Maybe he's out-of-one-t spécial?
00:40:21There will no—
00:40:21There'll be no results from the…
00:40:22Somewhere…
00:40:23possible.
00:40:24ivamente,
00:40:25nothing.
00:40:27There'll be payment.
00:40:30It's not a that is not a well…
00:40:31Maybe we are running.
00:40:33modus…
00:40:34Mmm, meatless Tuesday.
00:41:04BRG calling SSX, BRG calling SSX.
00:41:34Come in, BRG. SSX receiving. Come in, BRG.
00:41:44U.S. agent investigating our activities. He's already on your trail. Better prepare to leave midnight tonight. Repeat confirmation and answer.
00:41:54SSX repeating message from BRG. U.S. agent investigating our activities. He is already on your trail. Answer. We'll be ready.
00:42:03Have you any further instructions? Please say the arrangements are understood and agreed to. Seize and bind me.
00:42:11So you're in this too, Sheriff. But I'm not the Sheriff here at it. And that U.S. operative, I've already taken care of him.
00:42:17The Vanishing Corp, eh? Search him.
00:42:47That is all, master. Gag and bind him.
00:42:57I didn't believe there could be zombies.
00:42:59See now, I was wrong. Wrong about you too, Herr Professor.
00:43:03I'm afraid your information has come too late to do you much good, my friend.
00:43:07There aren't many things, sir.
00:43:09Place him in here.
00:43:25My plans didn't really include you, but I can use you just as easily.
00:43:29My plans didn't really include you, but I can use you just as easily.
00:43:32That will be just well.
00:43:36I'm afraid you won't find it very comfortable in there,
00:43:38but I promise you, you will not suffer long.
00:43:43Go back.
00:43:59Go down to the cellar and fetch me up some strawberry preserves, Bill Zello.
00:44:03Jeff can go.
00:44:04Sure. Where will I find them?
00:44:05When you get down there on the right.
00:44:07Not your left, mind you, but your right.
00:44:08Sure, I'll get them.
00:44:09Hello.
00:44:14Go down to the cellar and fetch me up some strawberry preserves, Bill Zello.
00:44:19Jeff can go.
00:44:20Sure. Where will I find them?
00:44:22When you get down there on the right.
00:44:24Not your left, mind you, but your right.
00:44:26Sure. I'll get them.
00:44:34Hello.
00:44:36BAM BAM BAM
00:45:04That did it.
00:45:07Spirits.
00:45:08Jeff.
00:45:09This ain't Jeff's spirit, and I don't know no Jeff.
00:45:11Yeah, it's Mr. Adams.
00:45:12I'm locked in.
00:45:13Well, why didn't you say that?
00:45:15Thanks, boy.
00:45:16You came in the nick of time.
00:45:17Who locked you in there?
00:45:18Him?
00:45:19Well, it was his brother, the professor.
00:45:20Come on, Charlie.
00:45:21Back in the box.
00:45:22You sure don't find the strangest people to hang out with?
00:45:24What you gonna do with him?
00:45:25He belongs in there.
00:45:26You sure do.
00:45:27Mr. Larry, let's leave you.
00:45:29Every time you say something ain't gonna happen, something happens again.
00:45:32Just take it easy, Jeff.
00:45:34Be calm, like me.
00:45:35What's that?
00:45:36Put that down.
00:45:37Why, that's that stuff that Rosella got out of the swamps.
00:45:40It's poison.
00:45:41Poison?
00:45:44Oh, Amy Bueller, preparing a good dinner for our guests?
00:45:47Nothing special.
00:45:48Oh, but I particularly wanted something special tonight.
00:46:02You know I don't want nobody messing around in my kitchen when I was cooking.
00:46:07I told you that the night your wife took sick.
00:46:10I remember, Mammy Bueller.
00:46:12A coincidence, no?
00:46:20I'm always running into that fellow.
00:46:22Anyone else likely to come in here for a minute?
00:46:24This sure is.
00:46:25Rosella's next door setting up the table,
00:46:28and Lazarus down the cellar fetching up the wine.
00:46:31But I must talk to you, Mammy Bueller.
00:46:33Jeff tells me you know all about this swamp lily poison.
00:46:35Don't ask me nothing, mister.
00:46:36You know, I've been studying you, Mammy Bueller.
00:46:38I don't think you're in this with Von Olderman at all.
00:46:41That I ain't.
00:46:42That man's in league with the devil.
00:46:44Well, then tell me.
00:46:45What do you think he's done with the body of his wife?
00:46:47What he done?
00:46:51What's so funny about that?
00:46:53He ain't done nothing with her.
00:46:55That's what gets him so panicking.
00:46:57She just walked away.
00:46:58How do you mean, walked away?
00:47:00He done made her to walk.
00:47:02And she walked.
00:47:03But not where he meant for her to go.
00:47:05Always he tells them what to do.
00:47:08And it doesn't.
00:47:10But not Miss Lila.
00:47:12She goes her own way, living or dead.
00:47:15Where do you think she went?
00:47:17I don't rightfully know.
00:47:20But I reckon I could find her.
00:47:22Does you want to see her?
00:47:23Well, I can't say as I really want to.
00:47:25But I think I should.
00:47:26Rosella, keep your eyes on things here till I gets back.
00:47:30I reckon nothing won't go wrong.
00:47:32And if your lesson is all ready, come, Mr.
00:47:35I should be.
00:47:48Miss Lila, honey.
00:47:49Miss Lila.
00:47:50Miss Lila.
00:47:53Did she hear that?
00:47:54Will she come?
00:47:55I think so.
00:47:57When she hears my voice.
00:47:59I...
00:48:00Ooooo!
00:48:02Ooooo!
00:48:03Ooooo!
00:48:05Ooooo!
00:48:06Ooooo!
00:48:07Ooooo!
00:48:08Ooooo!
00:48:09Ooooo!
00:48:10Ooooo!
00:48:11Ooooo!
00:48:12Ooooo!
00:48:13Ooooo!
00:48:14Ooooo!
00:48:15Ooooo!
00:48:16Ooooo!
00:48:17Ooooo!
00:48:18Ooooo!
00:48:21Ooooo!
00:48:22Ooooo!
00:48:23Ooooo!
00:48:24Ooooo!
00:48:25Can you understand?
00:48:27Who are you?
00:48:30He is a friend of your brother's, Missy.
00:48:34You guard my brother until midnight.
00:48:39Then I'll be ready.
00:48:41Don't worry about him. What can we do for you? How can we help you?
00:48:45No one can help me so long as he lives.
00:48:49Only his death can release the zombie.
00:48:53You mean von Alterman?
00:48:55Yes.
00:48:57I don't know what your plan is,
00:48:59but if it has anything to do with vengeance, we might act together.
00:49:02You'll join us, my dear.
00:49:18Or perhaps you prefer whiskey or sherry, anything you like.
00:49:20Thanks very much. Whatever you take will be quite all right with me.
00:49:24You know, I find this mixture, which I invented myself,
00:49:26to be an excellent stimulant for the digestion.
00:49:29Sheriff.
00:49:30Thanks, Doc.
00:49:36Wish I'd wait for your friend.
00:49:37Well, I can't imagine what's happened to him.
00:49:39It beats me the way they disappear one by one.
00:49:42To you, my dear brother-in-law, may your visit to me be a longer one than you intended.
00:49:47A charming sentiment.
00:49:49May I join you?
00:49:50I'm sorry to be so late, but I got tied up and had a little trouble getting free.
00:49:54I hope you will feel that the effort is worthwhile.
00:49:57Oh, I shall.
00:49:58Since you make it so plain that you value my society.
00:50:01Potent, isn't it?
00:50:02I hope so.
00:50:03Cocktails are supposed to be, aren't they?
00:50:04Not too potent.
00:50:05Or one might not enjoy one's dinner.
00:50:06Oh, you'll enjoy your dinner tonight.
00:50:07I promise you with that.
00:50:08I saw to it personally.
00:50:09Master, dinner is served.
00:50:17I'll not enjoy one's dinner.
00:50:18Oh, you'll enjoy your dinner tonight.
00:50:20I promise you that.
00:50:21I saw to it personally.
00:50:27Master, dinner is served.
00:50:39After you.
00:50:47Oh, Miss Randall, sit there.
00:50:49Yes, master.
00:50:50No, please, not there.
00:50:53I find my wife's empty seat too distressing.
00:50:55Yes, I can understand that.
00:50:56Still, it's pretty soon to replace her, isn't it?
00:50:59Please.
00:51:00Certainly, if you wish.
00:51:10Mr. Scopper, please.
00:51:14Stratum's.
00:51:16Sheriff.
00:51:21The sooner one adjusts oneself to the inevitable, the better, don't you think?
00:51:25I'm glad you feel that way.
00:51:26It might save trouble later.
00:51:28Trouble?
00:51:30What trouble, may I ask?
00:51:31I have a feeling there'll be further developments before midnight.
00:51:35Sure, yes.
00:51:36I have the same feeling.
00:51:46Leave us.
00:51:47I'll ring when we wish coffee.
00:51:57What is it, my dear?
00:51:59If you'll excuse me, I think I'll try and get some rest.
00:52:01I had rather a disturbed night last night.
00:52:05I'm sorry.
00:52:06Of course.
00:52:07Goodnight.
00:52:08Goodnight.
00:52:09Goodnight.
00:52:18You must try this port.
00:52:19I'm sure you won't find anything like it anywhere in America.
00:52:22I bought it from Spain myself.
00:52:23I was very young at the time and naturally anxious not to make a fool of myself.
00:52:37I remember one day walking for hours in the Ludwigstrasse, trying to make up my mind.
00:52:43Wait a minute.
00:52:45I oughtn't to feel groggy like this.
00:52:48Groggy?
00:52:49I'm sorry.
00:52:51However, in the end, basing my conclusions on the experiments of Androschi in Vienna,
00:52:56I injected the serum into the body of a tramp.
00:53:02You've doped us.
00:53:05I'm afraid, my friend, this time you have indeed been caught napping.
00:53:19I'm afraid.
00:53:24Lazarus!
00:53:26Carry this one to the laboratory and prepare him.
00:53:31He'll be better for my purpose.
00:53:32Keep an eye on the other one until the breathing stops.
00:53:35Yes, sir, doctor.
00:53:37I won't be long.
00:53:50Jeff!
00:53:52Rosella!
00:53:53Let me be able some coffee, please, at once.
00:53:55Not a cup, but a whole quart.
00:53:56And hurry if we're to save a man's life.
00:54:02You can put the gun away, Adams.
00:54:04So he didn't catch a napping after all.
00:54:06Who are you?
00:54:07The United States agent?
00:54:09You guessed it.
00:54:10It was the real foreign agent who was the vanishing corpse.
00:54:13I had a little trouble with him, and he got the worst of it.
00:54:16But everywhere I hid the body, Jeff found it.
00:54:19How did you know coffee was the antidote?
00:54:21He told me.
00:54:22How do you know?
00:54:23Mammy Bueller told me.
00:54:25Before I go after Scott, did you find any trace of Keating?
00:54:28No, I didn't.
00:54:29You think Von Alterman did away with him?
00:54:30Perhaps.
00:54:34Dr. Von Alterman!
00:54:36We're leaving here at midnight.
00:54:38But why should we leave here?
00:54:39I don't understand.
00:54:40My work will be completed by then.
00:54:41There'll be no further reason for delay.
00:54:43You better begin packing at once, but take only the barriers and necessities.
00:54:48I don't know what to say.
00:54:49I didn't know or even guess any of this.
00:54:51I don't know what to say.
00:54:52I couldn't have stayed here if I had.
00:54:53You've grown up in the wrong environment.
00:54:54Been taught to think the wrong thoughts.
00:54:55You've grown up in the wrong environment.
00:54:56You've been taught to think the wrong thoughts.
00:54:57I don't know what to say.
00:54:58I didn't know or even guess any of this.
00:54:59I couldn't have stayed here if I had.
00:55:00You've grown up in the wrong environment.
00:55:01You've been taught to think the wrong thoughts.
00:55:02All that will be altered.
00:55:03But I don't want it altered.
00:55:04We can't waste any more time.
00:55:05We'll have to break the door down.
00:55:06Think you can find an axe?
00:55:07Yes.
00:55:08Yes.
00:55:09Yes.
00:55:10Yes.
00:55:11Yes.
00:55:12Yes.
00:55:13Yes.
00:55:14Yes.
00:55:15Yes.
00:55:16Yes.
00:55:17Yes.
00:55:18Yes.
00:55:19Yes.
00:55:20Yes.
00:55:21Yes.
00:55:22Yes.
00:55:23Yes.
00:55:24Yes.
00:55:25Yes.
00:55:26It's all going to be altered.
00:55:27We can't waste any more time.
00:55:28We'll have to break the door down.
00:55:29Think you can find an axe?
00:55:30I'll try by the heart.
00:55:31There's nothing else that I'd rather have in my hand right now.
00:55:33Well, get going then.
00:55:34Not me.
00:55:35I ain't going to budge out of this spot.
00:55:37I might find something more than an axe.
00:55:38Come on.
00:55:39We'll all go then.
00:55:40If there isn't an axe handed, we might find something else to do the job.
00:55:43No.
00:55:44No.
00:55:45I won't go.
00:55:46I have told you there's nowhere the course open to you.
00:55:48But you can't take me against my will.
00:55:51Not with Mr. Warrington and Mr. Adams to prevent it.
00:55:55I'll go to them and ask their help.
00:55:57Go to them?
00:55:58You'll find they're in no condition to help you or themselves.
00:56:01The servants will do as I bid them.
00:56:03This house is cut off from the outside world.
00:56:05You'll go with me, willingly or unwillingly, that's certain.
00:56:08It's up to you to make your choice.
00:56:10We leave within the hour.
00:56:25Oh, Larry.
00:56:39The door just opened and closed down, Doc.
00:56:42He just went down.
00:56:43He told me you...
00:56:44Never mind.
00:56:45He could only tell you what he knew.
00:56:46Come on.
00:56:47Let's go.
00:56:48We'll have to find Scott.
00:56:50The heart is still beating.
00:56:55What is it?
00:57:18Who's there?
00:57:19Open up, Professor.
00:57:21Lazarus, sound the call.
00:57:24I'll end the hand, if you like.
00:57:25No, sir, Mr. Latter.
00:57:26I sure am enjoying this.
00:57:27Stand back, ladies.
00:57:28Oh, boy.
00:57:29I've been moaning up here for long.
00:57:31Where are they?
00:57:32Why don't they come?
00:57:33Ah!
00:57:34Oh, boy.
00:57:35I've been moaning up here for long.
00:57:37Where are they?
00:57:38Why don't they come?
00:57:39Ah!
00:57:40Ah!
00:57:41Oh, boy.
00:57:42I've been moaning up here for long.
00:57:45Ah!
00:57:46Where are they?
00:57:47Why don't they come?
00:57:49Ah!
00:57:50Ah!
00:57:51Ah!
00:57:52Ah!
00:57:53Ah!
00:57:54Ah!
00:57:55Ah!
00:57:56Back up against the wall.
00:57:57Put up your hands.
00:57:58I've been after you a long time, Professor.
00:58:01So?
00:58:02All right.
00:58:03Halt!
00:58:04Seize these people and find them.
00:58:05I say, Halt!
00:58:06You hear me?
00:58:07I say Halt!
00:58:08Halt!
00:58:09Halt!
00:58:10Halt!
00:58:11Halt!
00:58:12Halt!
00:58:13You all right?
00:58:23Halt!
00:58:24Seize these people and find them.
00:58:26I say, Halt!
00:58:28You hear me?
00:58:29I say, Halt!
00:58:31Halt!
00:58:32Halt!
00:58:33Halt!
00:58:34Halt.
00:58:35It is finished.
00:58:43All the powers and light are ranged against you.
00:58:50You dare to set your will against mine?
00:58:53I do.
00:58:54You can't hurt me.
00:58:56You can't destroy me.
00:58:59You can't control me.
00:59:05Freeze and bind him.

01:00:07Lila!
01:00:08Lila!
01:00:27Sorry you can't drive back with us.
01:00:29He's got to stay on a few days to settle things up here.
01:00:31I guess that's right.
01:00:32But Jennifer's in a hurry to go.
01:00:34Otherwise, we'd wait for you.
01:00:35You understand, don't you?
01:00:36Of course.
01:00:37And when I get you to Harlem,
01:00:39I'm gonna get you a good job, a swell one.
01:00:42And if you just save your money,
01:00:44it means you can get married.
01:00:46If I gets a swell job, honey,
01:00:49I don't need to get married.
01:00:51Come on.
01:00:52Yes, come on.
01:01:01Yes.
01:01:03Yes, sir.
01:01:04Yes, sir.
01:01:05And there is a million cruelty in a dream.
