California is experiencing its coldest summer in decades — and it’s not just a fluke. A dense marine layer, cold Pacific waters, and a stuck jet stream have teamed up to keep the Golden State grey and chilly. From San Francisco to Santa Monica, beachgoers are trading swimsuits for sweaters. Find out why this strange weather pattern is gripping the West Coast — and how long it’s expected to last.

00:00This summer, California isn't bringing the heat, it's bringing the chill.
00:04From San Francisco to SoCal, the skies have stayed stubbornly gray,
00:08and temperatures have dipped to the coldest levels since 1965.
00:12Bay Area highs are stuck around 67 degrees, nearly five below average,
00:17and it's all thanks to a dense marine layer hugging the coast.
00:20This layer forms when warm air meets the cold Pacific,
00:23creating thick, low clouds that block the sun and keep things cool.
00:28Normally, these clouds clear up by midday, but not this year.
00:31Cold waters off Baja, California, and a stuck jet stream have supercharged the gloom,
00:36making June gloom roll into No Sky July.
00:39Meteorologists say this pattern might linger well into August.
00:43Meanwhile, just 20 miles inland, it can feel like a totally different world,
00:47sunny, dry, and over 90 degrees.
00:50It's one of the most bizarre weather splits in the U.S.,
00:52and it's keeping California's beaches chilly and deserted.
00:56So if you're dreaming of sun-soaked waves on the west coast,
00:59you might want to rethink your summer plans.
01:01Because this year, California's forecast is more fleece hoodie than flip-flop.
01:05But once again, you just couldn't get to see a triple-flop.
