Cyprus battles largest wildfires in more than 50 years as two people found dead

At least 120 square kilometres of land were scorched in one of the largest wildfires in Cyprus' history. The remains of two people were discovered in a charred vehicle on a main road between hilltop villages affected by the blaze.

00:00Firefighters in Cyprus are battling the country's largest wildfires in over 50 years.
00:08The fires caused the destruction of many homes as well as the evacuation of dozens of villages.
00:13Two people were also found dead in a burnt out car on Wednesday night.
00:19The wildfires scorched at least 120 square kilometers of land
00:24and have destroyed just over 1% of the island's landmass.
00:30The blaze continued to rage into Thursday.
00:33A fire department spokesperson warned that strong winds and intense heat
00:37may further worsen the situation, which he said could potentially become very dangerous.
00:44While the cause of the fire is still being investigated,
00:47the chief fire officer told local media eyewitnesses who called the fire service
00:52had reported arsonists had caused the fire to break out at a landfill.
