00:00A political analyst warns that PAS may lose out if Kedat Menteri Besar Sanusi Noor declines to contest the post of vice president at the party polls.
00:12Awang Azman Pawi of University Malaya said the two-term Menteri Besar was a highly popular figure among PAS's grassroots as well as young voters, even at the national level.
00:23He said Sanusi's dismissal of calls for him to vie for the post could be a strategic move to prevent internal conflict while projecting humility and loyalty to collective decisions by the top leadership.
00:35However, he said it would also appear as though new leaders could only rise up the party's ranks after the old guard voluntarily steps down.
00:43Awang Azman told FMT if there is no element of renewal in the PAS leadership, it could cause the party to lose talent and diminish its ability to attract both professionals and young voters.
00:55Recently, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Chassin backed Sanusi for vice president, citing his leadership and popularity.
01:02But Sanusi downplayed it, saying he's not ready to be the Islamic party's vice president.
