Transcript
00:00As summer blasts into full swing, the thoughts of metalheads across the UK turn to one place,
00:06Derbyshire, once again.
00:08In just a few short weeks, two to be in fact,
00:12Bloodstock Open Air will once again unleash a torrent of heavy music upon its dedicated legions of fans.
00:18But this isn't just another festival, oh no,
00:21it's the culmination of over two decades of passion, dedication and a fierce commitment to the metal community.
00:29Bloodstock's journey began not on a vast outdoor field, but indoors.
00:34It first opened its doors as Bloodstock UK Metal Fest in 2001, held at the Derby Assembly Rooms.
00:41This was the brainchild of Paul Raymond Gregory, a renowned fantasy artist known for his iconic album covers,
00:48and his family, and their vision was simple yet profound,
00:51to create a festival by metal fans, for metal fans, a genuine celebration of the music they love.
00:59It was a grassroots effort born purely out of a passion for heavy metal culture.
01:05And after four successful indoor years, and the festival rapidly outgrown its confines,
01:09In 2005, Bloodstock made its pivotal move to Catten Hall,
01:14transforming into the outdoor Bloodstock Open Air we now know today.
01:19This was a turning point that allowed it to truly flourish and grow into the formidable independent course it has become.
01:26And as a testament to Bloodstock's deep connection to its community and its unwavering values,
01:32is the Sophie Lancaster stage.
01:35Renamed in 2009, the stage stands as a powerful tribute to Sophie Lancaster,
01:41who was tragically murdered for simply looking different and being part of the alternative subculture.
01:47It's a poignant reminder of unity and acceptance,
01:50ensuring her memory and the fight against prejudice remain an integral part of the festival's heart.
01:56Over the years, Bloodstock has become a pilgrimage for metalheads,
02:00drawing some of the biggest names in the genre to its hallowed grounds.
02:04Legends like Slayer, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Alice Cooper,
02:09I could go on and on and on, but all of which have graced the main stage.
02:13The festival consistently delivers a diverse lineup,
02:16from the crushing power of Machine Head and Lamb of God,
02:20to the atmospheric grandeur of Nightwish and Opeth,
02:24alongside the technical brilliance of bands such as Gojira,
02:27who are headlining this year, and Architects.
02:30It's a place where iconic acts meet the next generation of metal titans.
02:35And so, from its humble beginnings to its current status as the UK's premier independent metal festival,
02:42or one of them at least,
02:43Bloodstock has remained true to its roots.
02:45It's a celebration of heavy music, a beacon of community,
02:49and a testament to the enduring power of metal.
02:51So get ready to join the Bloodstock family when the gates open in August.
