Who will get the credit, if the #Patriots regain their success- Vrabel or Maye?
Transcript
00:00The Curtis Camp query of the day and your question today, Curtis, which one, Vrabel or Drake May will be the one who is credited from getting the team out of the consecutive four win seasons to playoff contention should it happen.
00:20OK, so if this team is a playoff team, who will get the most credit for bringing the team out of the doldrums?
00:28It's an easy one. Excellent question. Easy one. Easy one. Vrabes all day long.
00:35You agree with that? 100 percent. When you have players saying we have a coach and we didn't have that last year, like that's going to be Vrabel all day.
00:41We had so many issues last season when it came to players saying certain things, acting a certain way on the sidelines, Gerard walking things back like it is.
00:53It will 100 percent be Vrabel. Yeah, I disagree. I think it might be Drake May.
00:58Like, I mean, I think how many great coaches get fired without a quarterback?
01:04No, no. But the question is who gets the credit. Right. So they're going to say Drake May was good because they hired Vrabel and Vrabel then hired Josh McDaniels. Right.
01:15That's what it's going to be. If anybody gets the lion's share of the credit, if Drake May is a pro bowler having a great season, it'll be Josh McDaniels over Vrabel in my perspective.
01:24No, no. But it's going to be the fact that they hired Vrabel who then hired Josh McDaniels.
01:28What? But if he has a great season, the offensive coordinator will get a large amount of that credit.
01:33Let me ask you the question. Who gets the credit? Josh McDaniels, Billy O'Brien, Charlie Weiss or Bill Belichick?
01:44Well, Tom Brady. For what? For like the offense being really good.
01:48Well, the offensive coordinators did ever since Belichick hired his drinking buddies.
01:52No, no, no. But I'm talking prior to that. And Brady, like he gets credit for being good. Don't get it twisted.
01:58Josh McDaniels got six jobs. Yeah. But Curtis, there's never a question. Was it Bill, Josh or Brady?
02:05It's was a Bill or Brady. And you know, Josh McDaniels getting jobs is not about like getting credit.
02:14No, it's about what he did. Well, I think I think you're doing this is almost like a Jackson five.
02:20You're asking a question. And the question was, who gets more of the credit if the team does well?
02:25Right. And so, in my opinion, it's going to be Vrabel because Vrabel is the one who changed the culture.
02:31He brought in Josh McDaniels, who then made Drake May good. So that's the credit of it.
02:36Is is Drake May going to get credit for being a good quarterback? Yes, he will.
02:42But it's always going to go back to who was the guy that unlocked Drake May's potential.
02:48Not to completely dodge the question, but it's also going to come down to how the games look like if they're,
02:52you know, 10 and seven, but have the, you know, best scoring defense in football,
02:56Mike Vrabel is going to get the lion's share of that credit.
02:58But if they're, you know, nine and eight, and it's because Drake May,
03:02like what the Bengals did last year, where Joe Burrow had to win all those games
03:06because the defense is nowhere to be found, then Drake May is going to get that credit.
03:08So it's going to come down to how it plays out.
03:10Yeah, that's true, Sean.
03:11I guess my question would be who got the credit in Kansas City in 2019, Patrick Mahomes or Andy Reid?
03:18In 2019, Andy Reid.
03:22Because remember, everybody will tell you Andy Reid was able to make Patrick Mahomes into this.
03:31Look what he did with this one.
03:33It was about Andy Reid.
03:34He had 50 touchdown passes.
03:36Nobody Andy Reid had ever coached, I believe, had over 30.
03:38No, no, I understand the point.
03:40No, I think Patrick Mahomes got the credit in that case.
03:44Oh, his for his 50 touchdown season?
03:46Yes, MVP.
03:47Yeah, but prior to that, right, it was Andy Reid was the reason why Patrick Mahomes
03:54looked like he was going to be a really great quarterback.
03:57And now it's more of like, all right, we know Patrick Mahomes is a great quarterback.
04:00A 508 texter says this may be the most annoying question query, excuse me, of all time.
04:07There was never a conversation about who it was for 20 years until it was over.
04:12Well, I, yeah, there was never a Belichick or Brady conversation where you live under a rock.
04:19There was.
04:19What are you talking about?
04:21There was.
04:22This is Mark from Connecticut.
04:25Hello, Mark.
04:25How are we doing this morning, guys?
04:28Great.
04:29What's up?
04:30What's up?
04:32Wiggy.
04:33Yo.
04:33I am super excited for our guy, Stephon Diggs.
04:37I really think that the guy's going to be back to full go.
04:40And it's amazing that Drake May is going to have a real weapon that we haven't had since
04:46Gronk or Julian Edelman.
04:48I mean, it's just, it's going to be great, I think, this year.
04:50And I'm super excited.
04:52I'm heading to training camp right now and hope to see some good stuff.
04:55Okay.
04:56Yeah, I think Steph Diggs is a tremendous add, especially if he's healthy.
04:59He's a thousand-yard wide receiver.
05:01I don't, I think Shy might have did it at one point in time for a lead.
05:05I don't know who the last thousand-yard receiver was for the New England Patriots.
05:10I believe it was Edelman.
05:11Okay.
05:11And when that was?
05:12I might be wrong, but I think that's who it was.
05:13So when you look at Steph Diggs, it seems like he's healthy and he's ready to go.
05:17And if he is healthy, I think you'll get the Steph Diggs that you've kind of always
05:22saw throughout his career.
05:23He might not be as dominant, but he's still a legitimate number one that Drake May can lean on.
05:30Yeah, I mean, you're looking at the, and you brought it up yesterday, you look at the
05:37rest of that wide receiver room and you have a giant, speaking of question, giant question
05:42mark.
05:43That's the biggest question mark.
05:44Who is the other guy where if a team goes, all right, you know what?
05:48We're going to double Steph Diggs and we're going to take him away.
05:51Who then becomes the other guy to make things easier where you can go, all right, we can
05:58run the offense through this player.
05:59Who is that guy?
06:02Hey, do we feel like that's the running back room?
06:06I don't know.
06:07I mean, I'm like a lot of people.
06:08I don't really, I don't have much confidence right now in Ramondre Stevenson.
06:14I may be more leaning towards Shimes side of the room and being like, but is that more
06:18of a line thing or more of a him thing?
06:22Yeah, I think it's more him.
06:23Because he was a little loose with the football last year.
06:27He was a little loose.
06:28And the year before he had some issues.
06:29It's also just not that explosive.
06:31Like it's just, he's, he's relatively outside of the fumbles, like reliable in catching the
06:36football and hitting the right hole.
06:37But there's no, no explosion and chance for a big play.
06:41When he's good though, he's really good.
06:44That's the thing about Ramondre.
06:45And that's why I keep getting pulled in.
06:46Like, yeah, he's got some issues.
06:48He's got to figure some, some things out, but when he's good, he's really good.
06:52Is he though?
06:52Like he hasn't even had a thousand year rushing season, but, but, but watching him
06:56play, Oh no, he did once in 2022.
06:58I'm sorry.
06:59I'm not, I'm not talking stats.
07:00I'm talking about watching him play.
07:02He, he is a unit out there.
07:04Like watching him, he can run people over.
07:07I just, he's a tough runner.
07:08I'll give you that.
07:09He's a tough runner.
07:10He makes a, he definitely doesn't because of his skillset.
07:14He doesn't have a lot of plays where they're like TFLs where he's getting tackled behind
07:18the line of scrimmage.
07:19The thing that I just look at is he's not like that home run hitter and fumbles.
07:26Yeah.
07:26He fumbles.
07:27And that's the issue.
07:27And let's see what Travion Henderson is that home run hitter.
07:31And I keep hoping that they're going to go out and go and do deals for guys.
07:37Like you're, no, no.
07:38I'm talking about the guy that got, okay.
07:40I just think that, I mean, Drake may, may have more yards running than, uh, any running
07:45back on this football team.
07:47I don't think if, yeah, if that happens, that's a major problem.
07:50Cause that's, you know, that is a huge problem.
07:52You don't have an issue with the line at all.
07:54I, my issue with the line is I expect them to be better than last year because you drafted
08:03a kid fourth overall to be your left tackle.
08:07If there's an issue there, then I have an issue with Vrabel and Elliot Wolf when it comes
08:14to why did you draft this kid that high when you could have maybe drafted Ashton Jente,
08:22my guy, Tyler Warren, Ted McMillan.
08:25Yeah.
08:25There's a number of things that, so the old line, my expectation is they're better because
08:31you, you, in my opinion, you have better players.
08:36Vrabel's in a great spot because if Will Campbell is not the guy, if the draft doesn't hit,
08:43it means you're getting rid of Wolf.
08:46Like he's not going to be held accountable.
08:48I don't think.
08:49No, see, I disagree with you.
08:50Don't we think that it's Vrabel is the guy who made all the decisions when it came to
08:55the off season in the draft, but this is why he kept Elliot Wolf around.
08:58That is dead.
08:58Right.
08:58Like he becomes the fall guy, at least the first time.
09:01Okay.
09:01If it happens again, then yeah, it's on Vrabel, but the first time it'll be Elliot Wolf.
09:05Well, he brought his own guy in also.
09:06Exactly.
09:07But Wiggy, do you think Robert Kraft is going to pay two coaches not to coach while hiring another
09:11coach?
09:11No chance.
09:12No.
09:12No, I agree with what you're saying, Curtis.
09:14I think Elliot Wolf will be the scapegoat.
09:16I'm not saying it's right.
09:17You are right, Wiggy.
09:19Vrabel is the one who made those decisions.
09:21Right.
09:21But if they don't succeed, I think there's no way they fire Vrabel.
09:25Yeah.
09:25No, no.
09:26I agree with you.
09:26Yeah.
09:27Elliot Wolf is definitely the scapegoat.
09:28And how many wins does this team have to get for this year to be considered a success
09:33when it comes to Mike Vrabel?
09:35Nine.
09:35Yep.
09:36Nine and legit.
09:38They might not make the playoffs with nine wins because I think every team last year
09:43had ten wins.
09:44But you were right in the mix.
09:46If you have less than nine wins, it is a failure, my opinion.
09:51Because the expectations are Vrabel, his first year as a coach of the Titans, they had nine
09:57wins.
09:58And you're in...
09:59What was their season before that?
10:01They were...
10:01They had nine wins the year before that.
10:03Yeah, that's the thing.
10:03Yeah, that is part of it.
10:06But I think we all believe that Vrabel is a really good coach.
10:11And so nine wins is the expectation that I look at for this football team.
10:18Anything less than that, what went wrong?
10:21Where did you feel as a coaching staff?
10:24Where did Drake Mayfield as a quarterback?
10:28How you look at the division, your division isn't that tough other than Buffalo?
10:34You added...
10:34That's five or six, depending on how you look at last season and that fourth win.
10:39And that additional wins that you got to get for it to be a success for Mike Vrabel.
10:46Right, but even last year's games, there was what?
10:48Three, four games where like, oh, the Patriots should have won this football game.
10:52Had a chance to win this football game.
10:54Yeah, but if you're going to play the ifs game, I mean, they probably shouldn't have won
10:57week one.
10:59You know what I mean?
10:59Like, they also shouldn't have won week 18 if we're going to play the ifs game.
11:04The Patriots entered last season without being favored in a single game.
11:09They are favored in two of their first three.
11:12They are favored in week one.
11:13They're favored in 11, I think, total.
11:15Like, to compare last year and what they did to this year is to compare apples and oranges.
11:21Yeah, I'd agree with Curtis on that one.
11:22Because you can't tell me that Mike Vrabel, and this is the comparison of last year,
11:29is a far superior head coach than Gerard Mayo was.
11:33Right?
11:34That's what we all believe.
11:36That you're telling me he can only get six or seven wins?
11:41Well, no, I just wonder if you're Robert Kraft and you're looking at the mistake that was
11:47Gerard Mayo.
11:48Are you giving a bit of a pass on this season when it comes to Mike Vrabel?
11:54And are you happy with seven wins?
11:56I shouldn't.
11:57Gerard only lasted a season.
11:58And it wasn't much better than it was just as bad as the seasons before.
12:03So he shouldn't get a pass.
12:04I think publicly he might.
12:07But privately, I think Kraft might say, Mike, what the hell's going on here?
12:11They're not qualified to do what Mayo's doing.
12:13Seven wins?
12:14Like, I think privately.
12:16How is he still here?
12:18I think privately, Kraft thinks like I think in that he expects Vrabel to have this team
12:25at nine wins.
12:26Is Jelani coming back to the show this year?
12:28I would say there's a better chance of me calling Red Sox games on Nessun.
12:32Maybe he will.
12:34Yeah.
12:34Sometimes they've got to know the police.
12:36I don't think so.
12:37Maybe he learned from it.
12:38I don't think he'll be back.
12:40Oh, yeah.
12:40Maybe it's not as big of a deal in his world as it is in ours.
12:44I don't think Jelani Tavai will be back.
12:47Greg, just to put the cap on the camp query of the day.
12:50Yes.
12:50I say Drake May.
12:52Courtney Wiggy say Mike Vrabel.
12:55What do you say?
12:56Drake May.
12:58Sean?
12:59So I say Mike Vrabel.
13:01Wow.
13:02The Drake May apologist.
13:04Well, because I don't think I think people are you've heard you've I've given you my expectations
13:08for Drake May this year.
13:09I think he'll suck.
13:10Nope.
13:11I don't think he'll suck.
13:12I think they're going to win the majority of their games on defense.
13:14I don't think they're going to ask him to throw the ball all over the yard.
13:18I don't think that's going to be required.
13:19That's why they went so heavy in the offseason on defense.
13:21They want to try and win the ball running the football and playing defense.
13:24But he's going to be judged by late in the fourth quarter, something he struggled with
13:27last year.
13:28If they win those games, he will get credit.
13:30Yeah, he'll get credit for those moments.
13:31But at the end of the season, when you look back, if they're 10 and 7, but it's mainly
13:37because of the defense, it's going to go to Vrabel.
13:39This is rich.
13:40You are already making excuses.
13:42It's unbelievable.
13:43I don't understand that was an excuse.
13:44You asked for an opinion.
13:46I gave you one.
13:46It's not an excuse.
13:47You're terrified to give too much expectation to your whoopies.
13:50Since they drafted him, you have been pumping the brakes.
13:54No, you guys think he's going to be an MVP candidate.
13:57Like, I don't get it.
13:57You've been walking behind him, sniffing his farts.
14:01I'm still carrying the water.
14:02I don't care.
14:03Since they drafted him.
14:05I'm a fart smeller.
14:07Nice Drake bouquet.
14:08And now, suddenly, it's like, eh, I don't think, eh, it's not much.
14:12I support my guy more than anybody.
14:14They're going to win these games on defense.
14:16I'm a ride or die.
14:17The guy who says you can't win a football game on defense ever in the NFL anymore is
14:21now saying they're going to win.
14:23Literally, I've never said that.
14:25You have a million times.
14:26The Eagles literally had the best defense in football, Greg.
14:29The league has changed, Greg.
14:30You need a mobile quarterback to win it.
14:32That's it.
14:33I said it's the biggest cheat code.
14:34You don't even need a defense.
14:34The Eagles has changed.
