00:00Today we're taking a deep dive into Hugo Eketike's move to Newcastle, your reactions from the Club World Cup,
00:06some transfer chaos in the Premier League and plenty more postings from the world of football social media.
00:11I'm Matt from 442 and here's what's on our feed.
00:17Right then, Hugo Eketike to Newcastle. A big deal for a very, very good player.
00:23He's got absolutely everything you need from a striker and is basically very similar to Alexander Idzak.
00:28For those of you who didn't watch him in the Bundesliga last season, if you don't watch German football too much,
00:32you might have seen him in the Europa League, but he's quick, he's strong, he's got all the height you'd need for a centre-forward,
00:37brilliant feet, incredible finishing, all the footwork.
00:41What a signing this could turn out to be for a number of reasons, many of which I will break down for you.
00:47First off, it's clear they need another centre-forward.
00:50They've just let Callum Wilson leave the club, or rather he decided to leave the club at the end of his contract.
00:55So, there's the first reason. The second is that they've already signed Anthony Alanga for a left-wing position.
01:02And lastly but not least, they needed another striker and after João Pedro turned them down and went to Chelsea,
01:08this deal kind of makes a lot of sense.
01:10I say all this because Hugo Eketike, as a centre-forward, has also been known to play a little bit of left-wing.
01:16He's certainly got the ability to, but definitely for Newcastle, this is a centre-forward signing.
01:21And the quoted amount for it is above £70 million.
01:25This is a lot of money. To be honest, most things are a lot of money these days in the transfer market,
01:30but above £70 million is quite a lot for a player who, at the start of it, isn't going to be a guaranteed starter.
01:36Like, he is being signed for the squad as a backup to Alexander Izak, who, by the way, is their current record signing at £63 million.
01:43So, Eketike will be the most expensive player for Newcastle ever.
01:46They're getting a striker and they're able to give, give Izak a break, you know what I mean.
01:51Able to rotate the squad. They're back in the Champions League.
01:54The Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, the Premier League.
01:56I don't really think they're going to be winning the Champions League, so getting back into it is going to have to be through the Premier League.
02:00They're going to be fighting on all fronts.
02:03And once Izak comes out of the team, the notable drop-off was pretty big to Callum Wilson.
02:08I don't think Callum Wilson is a bad striker.
02:10I just think combined with his skill set, with the way that Newcastle play,
02:14there was a vast difference between having Izak and having Wilson.
02:17Hopefully, that level isn't such a big drop-off when they bring in Eketike this season.
02:22On top of this, though, and this is the big hit,
02:25they've covered themselves for the future in an eventual case when Alexander Izak leaves.
02:31It only kind of makes sense that the biggest clubs in Europe will come calling.
02:34There's already been rumours this summer that Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in him.
02:39Yeah, eventually, it looks like Izak may move on.
02:41And if he does, the replacement's already there.
02:44And for what is actually going to be a fairly good price,
02:46when you consider that Izak will probably be sold for a lot of money, probably 100 million plus.
02:50So they'll already have their backup.
02:53Moving on, and we'll move to our YouTube posts section,
02:56formerly known as the YouTube community tab,
02:58where I asked you guys what you thought of the Club World Cup as a whole.
03:02But before we get on to your reactions, just so we'll drop on the game,
03:05because two things stood out for me.
03:06Firstly, Cole Palmer is an absolute joke.
03:10Unbelievably good.
03:11The second goal, the dummy, it's so clever.
03:14You can tell the guy just has football running through his blood and his brains,
03:17because that's all he thinks about.
03:19Because he's unbelievably good.
03:21So, so smart on the pitch.
03:23And secondly, why hasn't there been more of a noise made of Luis Enrique absolutely losing his shit at the end?
03:27I feel like he slapped João Pedro in the face at the end of the match.
03:32So much for people not really caring about the competition.
03:35Unbelievable.
03:35Anyway, Chelsea were looking very, very good.
03:38They had the game won by half-time.
03:40They're exceptional.
03:42Good enough that I think there'll be a title challenger this year in the Premier League?
03:45Maybe not, but definitely, definitely a top four contender.
03:49Somewhere between top four and challenging, because, my God, they were very impressive.
03:53So, on to your opinions.
03:57I think it's fair to say most of you weren't really impressed with the competition.
04:01Here's a few of them.
04:02Bad, simple, one word.
04:05No one gives a shit.
04:06That was another response.
04:09Utter tosh, someone said.
04:10Great word, tosh.
04:12I don't even know what it means.
04:13It doesn't even sound negative, but, yeah.
04:15And someone else said, honestly, couldn't give a f*** about this competition.
04:18It's pointless.
04:19I get it, right?
04:20That's some run-of-the-mill negativity.
04:23Football fans are difficult to please at the best of times.
04:25So, throwing in a huge new tournament midway into the summer is really going to take some liking.
04:30I get it.
04:31It was a money-making plot from FIFA to get their own club competition, basically, that rivals the importance of the Champions League.
04:38I saw a few Chelsea players afterwards being like, yeah, this is really important.
04:41This means a lot.
04:41It's going to be loads in the future.
04:44It might mean something in the future, in the very distant future, but it doesn't now.
04:49So, to try and claim that it does is a bit odd.
04:52And, you know, it's hard to look past that as a football fan.
04:54Having said that, a few of you did like it.
04:58A lot of you seem to be really, really keen to watch the South American teams play, which was really, really cool.
05:04What I did as well, considering how many South American players, especially Brazilian players, move to the Premier League or move to European football.
05:12Like, it's quite interesting for me to have watched them before they end up in Europe.
05:16And then you're sort of, like, pretending to know who they really were beforehand.
05:19But, yeah, that one was really, really cool.
05:21Saw some interesting games.
05:22This was quite a good review.
05:24Someone said, South American teams did well.
05:26But I didn't lose sleep over millionaires who retire at 33, not getting an extra two weeks in Mykonos.
05:35I mean, that's really oddly specific for the time frame and for the fact it has to be Mykonos as well.
05:40I think you're sort of missing the point there.
05:44It's not that players didn't get time off for a specific holiday now.
05:49It's more the knock-on effect that it has in the Premier League.
05:52Like, if the Premier League and, you know, the rest of the European leagues are seeing really low-intensity games,
05:57are seeing lots of player injuries, that's the knock-on effect of the tournament.
06:01It's not because I care so much about them having a few more weeks in Greece or on any island, for that matter.
06:08The interesting point was that the empty stadiums, that was a big issue for me,
06:16especially because this is sort of a tester tournament for how the World Cup's going to look next summer.
06:22A lot of people have said, look, for most of these clubs, if you're a fan of a club, it's really difficult to get to the US.
06:27So, yeah, flying to a different continent is very, very difficult.
06:31And then I thought, by that logic, surely that makes the World Cup just as difficult.
06:35Like, I know you see the World Cup supported by so many international fans.
06:39Wherever it's been, there have been loads of fans there.
06:42But I just think this stretches across three countries.
06:45I think about last time in Qatar, how everything was within like a 20-minute drive of each other.
06:50This time, Mexico through the US, which is big enough as it is, all the way into Canada.
06:55Like, nobody's going to be able to follow their team for every single game.
06:58It's more likely you just pick a city and then end up watching whichever teams are in that city.
07:03Hopefully it's your one.
07:05But, yeah, it doesn't fill me with a lot of hope for the World Cup next summer in terms of there being an atmosphere.
07:10I think the Club World Cup let itself down by almost insisting upon itself.
07:15FIFA have pitched it as a huge, important tournament.
07:21It's the winners of all the important competitions from the last few years who have been invited to a huge tournament, which therefore makes it even better because it's only the winners of the winners of the winners.
07:33But then you started with like a 10-0 scoreline for Bayern Munich.
07:37And that's me not taking the piss out of Auckland.
07:39I get it.
07:40There's a huge golf in class.
07:41But all this did was basically demand that fans take this seriously while simultaneously being a massive cash grab, while simultaneously only further proving that there's such a disparity between the top teams and the rest of the teams in world football.
07:57Like, it was counterintuitive on so many levels and it just ends up Europa-centric in the end.
08:04You know, Chelsea spent a stupid amount of money on João Pedro in the middle of the competition and he ended up being the difference in like the semi-final.
08:13You could argue he was the difference in the final.
08:15Certainly scored a very good third goal.
08:17And that just then bled into the fact that Chelsea have used that money to get more money.
08:23They earned over $100 million from the tournament and it was worth spending, you know, $50-60 million on João Pedro mid-tournament.
08:30And now that's going to, you know, prove to be really handy for them in the transfer market.
08:37But yeah, to have a post-season tournament and they're like, no, this is defining.
08:41This is so big.
08:43The winners are going to wear a world champions badge on their shirt for the next few years.
08:48I don't know.
08:49I feel like making fans care about it just felt a bit blind.
08:53This was actually a very good comment as well, though.
08:55Moving on to the last little bit.
08:57Nathan Guthrie said Trump was pulling a salt bay.
08:59And which, you know, really just epitomises the negativity of this competition.
09:05But what I do have to say, it was really, really funny because of the confusion of the Chelsea players.
09:13You've got to see the video of Cole Palmer.
09:15So he's on like the stage bit at the end.
09:18Chelsea have just won the tournament.
09:19Rhys James is bringing this huge, amazing trophy over.
09:21And Trump's just sort of stood there like, yeah, I'm on stage too.
09:25The players, Palmer's like, what's he doing?
09:27Like, what the fuck is this guy doing?
09:29The Chelsea players lift the trophy.
09:30Everyone's cheering.
09:31And Trump's just like, sort of clapping along with it.
09:34It's so, it's so like indicative of this sort of weird era of sporting events that we're living in,
09:41as was the halftime show, that Trump, by pure kind of coincidence,
09:46or whether he planned out, whether he didn't, just ends up on stage at, you know,
09:49the most important moment of the competition where the winners are lifting the trophy.
09:53It's so ridiculous in so many ways.
09:56Unbelievable.
09:58And yeah, we'll move on to the wild, wild west.
10:00That is the transfer market.
10:01And starting, like I said last week, with Reddit.
10:04Because that's where you get some really good information.
10:05And we're going for Morgan Gibbs-White's deal to Spurs.
10:11It's a will they, won't they situation.
10:13It's a bit of an on and off situation.
10:16I was wondering whether or not it was going to happen.
10:19And I was hoping that Reddit would give me some answers.
10:20So what I seem to ascertain from it was that, first off,
10:24Morgan Gibbs-White has returned to preseason with Nottingham Forest.
10:28Looks like everything's being done fairly respectfully.
10:30But the fact is that Spurs have triggered his £60 million release clause.
10:35And the Nottingham Forest owner, Evangilos Maranakis, isn't happy about it.
10:39He's complained to the Premier League that Spurs have apparently not done this
10:42through the official route.
10:44So this is what I've dug up.
10:46Maranakis is asking where Spurs got the £60 million release clause figure from.
10:52Because it's not out there.
10:54Like, it would prop up in negotiations with the club.
10:57Eventually, you would assume so.
11:00But somehow Spurs have just banged on the money of any figure they could have offered.
11:04They've gone for the exact figure that is Morgan Gibbs-White's release clause.
11:08Even I think that's a bit suspicious.
11:10That's a bit odd not to kind of, you know, the opening gambit,
11:13not to be something a bit lower.
11:14But to hit the nail on the head is a bit odd.
11:16So you'd assume that someone from Forest or from Morgan Gibbs-White's camp
11:21has released that information, that sensitive information that is within a contract.
11:25So the Spurs can go in and offer it straight away.
11:27My question, or certainly the question that many people are raising is,
11:31how can you track that person down if they weren't necessarily involved in the contract?
11:37Like, if it's a breach of the parties in the contract, I get it.
11:40If it's one of Morgan Gibbs-White's intermediaries or friends or personal aides
11:44or something that's told someone that Spurs,
11:46who have then leaked the information back to Daniel Levy in the club,
11:48how would that go punished?
11:52Like, if Spurs have obtained this information illegally, yes.
11:56But if it's someone who's just sort of touted the number to Spurs through anything,
12:01I don't know, a WhatsApp, through a meeting, through a Zoom call, whatever,
12:05I'm not really sure that you could tie that to the club.
12:08And therefore, any punishment that Maranakis wants, whether it's a fine,
12:11whether it's more money, whether it's points deducted from Spurs,
12:14if there's anything like that, I'm not quite sure it's going to stick.
12:18The other thing it does is that the figure was set by the club during negotiations.
12:23When Morgan Gibbs-White signed or when he signed a new contract,
12:26they've said, look, 60 million, this is your release clause.
12:30If, during negotiations, the Nottingham Forest owner wanted to charge 70 or 80
12:36and he was haggling for whatever figure above 60 million,
12:39he'd then also be not sticking to the contract.
12:42Because then Gibbs-White could have said, well, hold on,
12:46while you're bargaining with whoever, Man City were interested in him,
12:49while you're bargaining with them for 70, 80 million or more money,
12:52you're not adhering to the fact that 60 million is enough to get me out of this contract.
12:58So it'd be weird that he'd be asking for more money.
13:01So they're getting the total amount.
13:03They're getting the full amount that's in the contract.
13:06It's really quite odd.
13:08He also seems to be annoyed that Morgan Gibbs-White's representatives have spoken
13:12and apparently agreed terms with the club.
13:17This one is very odd.
13:19Firstly, because permission's not given these days.
13:22But secondly, there's no way, basically, of following this through
13:26and getting Tottenham done for tapping up.
13:28The reason being, and I think I saw a video from this.
13:30It might have been The Athletic.
13:32It might have been The Athletic if we did a video on this.
13:33Basically saying that tapping up is so common these days
13:36because it goes through so many intermediaries
13:38and it happens so often that not one player or not one club can be done for it.
13:44Like if the Premier League were to fine or point deduct spurs for tapping up a player,
13:49they'd have to pretty much do it for every single club
13:51or for every single transfer deal because that's how common it is.
13:54Even the other day we saw with Noni Maduweki,
13:57there were all this information released that Maduweki has agreed personal terms.
14:01It's now up to the clubs to agree.
14:04That sounds like they haven't given permission.
14:06That sounds like it's been a personal job before it was a club job.
14:10So yeah, it just basically sounds like he's blowing off a lot of hot steam.
14:14And what it really sounds like is that within the club,
14:16someone at Nottingham Forest has okayed the deal
14:18and then he's found out about it and he's pretty furious that it's happened under his nose.
14:22There was apparently a medical booked in for Gibbs White at Tottenham last Friday.
14:27The club then cancelled that and Gibbs White had turned to pre-season training.
14:30They wouldn't have gone ahead with this if they hadn't have had permission.
14:36So again, it seems like there's been a bit of misunderstanding,
14:39a bit of miscommunication within Nottingham Forest.
14:41Certainly this is everything that I've seen on this Reddit post as well.
14:45And yeah, I would be annoyed having said all of that.
14:49If I was the Nottingham Forest owner, if this went under my nose
14:51and you'll found out that your second star player of the summer is leaving the club
14:55after, like I mentioned earlier, after Anthony and Langer join Newcastle,
14:59he'll be annoyed.
15:00But from everything else I've seen online, it doesn't look like this is particularly going to stop this deal.
15:05And Morgan Gibbs White will be a Spurs player.
15:07By hook or by crook within the next couple of weeks,
15:10for that original amount, after all that, it still will be £60 million.
15:14I mean, the bad thing is from Spurs' point of view is that other clubs have now been alerted
15:17to his transfer release clause.
15:20If you're wondering how it gets out there normally with other clubs,
15:22it will probably be the agent who's putting it out there.
15:26But yeah, now all of these clubs are aware that £60 million is the price
15:29to get Morgan Gibbs White out of Nottingham Forest.
15:31So if any other club did want to sign him, they could also put in that bid.
15:34Right, moving on then.
15:35So the post on Instagram is saying that United are paying United tax yet again
15:41after spending so much money on other players.
15:44Basically, if you don't know what United tax is,
15:46it probably happens a lot to a lot of clubs.
15:48It happens to Chelsea, it happens to Manchester City on the odd occasion.
15:51You get overcharged because teams know you've got money
15:54and teams know that you eventually end up paying.
15:56That whole story about United not wanting to pay too much for Anthony a few years ago.
16:02Then Ajax saying, no, you've got to pay £100 million and United going,
16:05fine, we'll do it.
16:06£100 million that might have been.
16:08So yeah, that's basically Manchester United tax.
16:10And this post is suggesting that £70 million is how much it's going to cost for Brian Mbuemo.
16:20I actually think it's more like £70 million is what it's going to cost to get him out of Brentford.
16:26To be honest, I think that's totally worth it.
16:29I don't think Man United are going to pay Man United tax.
16:31I just think that's going to be how much it costs to get a Premier League proven player,
16:36that Brian Mbuemo, 20 Premier League goals last season, that Brian Mbuemo,
16:41brilliant for the last few years at Brentford, that Brian Mbuemo,
16:43out of the club and to United.
16:45Like if you look at, for example, mentioned him just a few minutes ago,
16:49Noni Maduweki, what was that?
16:50£55 million, that's what it's going to take to get him to Arsenal, around that £50 to £60 million.
16:54£55 million was how much it cost Anthony Alanga, Newcastle,
16:58to get Alanga out of Nottingham Forest.
17:00Like if you look at those two guys' output, and then you look at Brian Mbuemo,
17:05£15 million more?
17:07In this day and age of another Premier League club, I actually kind of think it makes sense.
17:11Like there's also rumours that Eze is going to cost Arsenal £62 million from Crystal Palace.
17:16Not as much of a goal scorer as Mbuemo, so I'm not going to compare their goal scoring stats.
17:20Again, a really influential player from another Premier League club is going to cost £62 million.
17:25So £70 million doesn't actually seem ridiculous.
17:28If we're talking £80-90, yes.
17:32But yeah, who knows?
17:33£60, £65 plus add-ons?
17:34I don't think it's absolutely mental.
17:36I certainly don't think Man Utd are being held to ransom,
17:39because any other club is going to have to pay that to get Mbuemo out.
17:43And lastly, we'll finish with, well, I say it's quite a funny one.
17:45It's actually quite a distressing one for me,
17:47because it makes me feel really, really old.
17:49I saw this on Facebook, that not only has in the last week Petr Cech's son
17:55signed his first professional contract for Fulham, yes, he's a goalkeeper,
17:58but Ryan Bertrand's son, yes, also, surprise, surprise, a left-back,
18:02has signed his first professional contract for Arsenal.
18:05It just means that in the next few years, I'm going to be one of those old guys
18:08sat in the stands being like, oh, God, I remember his dad.
18:10I remember his dad playing.
18:11He was a good player.
18:12Like, they're ancient.
18:13But they're really not, and it just makes me feel old.
18:17What a life this is.
18:18Anyway, that was what's on our feed for another week.
18:23Make sure you guys let me know down in the comment section
18:26what you thought about all these topics,
18:27especially about when you think Brian Obromo is worth that much money
18:30and how good you think Eka TK will be.
18:33I think we will now officially close the lid on the Club World Cup.
18:38I was about to say overall good tournament, but I'm not sure it is.
18:41Overall good tournament on the pitch.
18:43Off the pitch, much left to be desired, as seen with your comments.
18:47But yeah, let us know all your thoughts down in the comments.
18:49Hit that subscribe button for loads more content coming up,
18:51especially an exciting pre-season trip that we will be covering.
18:57I won't say too much more.
18:58I'll leave you with that for now.
19:00But anyway, that's all from me for today.
19:01I'll see you in the next video.
