Les femmes transgenres américaines ne pourront plus participer aux épreuves féminines des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques, le Comité olympique et paralympique des États-Unis ayant changé sa politique pour se conformer au décret de Donald Trump.

Une mise à jour de la politique du comité olympique américain (USOPC) est entrée en vigueur le 21 juillet pour faire suite au décret présidentiel signé en février par Donald Trump et intitulé « Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports » (« Tenir les hommes à l'écart du sport féminin »). Elle a été ajoutée à la politique de sécurité des athlètes de l'USOPC sur son site internet, dans une nouvelle sous-section intitulée « Exigences supplémentaires ». « L'USOPC s'engage à protéger les opportunités offertes aux athlètes », peut-on lire dans l'ajout. « L'USOPC continuera de collaborer avec divers acteurs responsables (...) afin de garantir aux femmes un environnement de compétition juste et sécurisé, en conformité avec le décret exécutif 14201 », le décret de Trump.

00:04effectively barring transgender women from competing in Olympic women's sports.

00:10The change falls in line with an executive order enacted by President Trump in January.

00:15Let's bring in CBS News correspondent Elyse Preston, who's going to break down all this for us.

00:20And what this means as we look toward a Los Angeles Olympics just a few years down the line.

00:25Elyse, give us some context about this move and what it could mean moving forward.

00:30Well, Liz, the committee added to its athlete safety policy Monday,

00:34a section that will ban transgender women from competing in women's sporting events.

00:39Now, the policy states, quote,

00:41the U.S. O.P.C. will continue to collaborate with various stakeholders

00:45to ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment consistent with Executive Order 14201.

00:53Now, the rule doesn't mention transgender athletes explicitly,

00:57but it does reference compliance with the executive order signed by President Trump called, quote,

01:02keeping men out of women's sports, which was also aimed at changing rules around athletes who are transgender.

01:09Now, the International Olympic Committee's framework from 2021 states the need to ensure everyone can practice sport

01:17in a safe, harassment-free environment that respects their needs and identities,

01:22but places the final authority for decisions on transgender athletes with the international and national sport governing bodies.

01:30Now, the U.S. amendment comes just months after a U.S. O.P.C. meeting in April,

01:36where Chief Executive Sarah Hirschland said the committee had no plans to define eligibility criteria ahead of the 2028 L.A. Games.
