00:45Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:00In Venezuela, the closing of the electoral campaign in the 335 municipalities of the country started this Tuesday and will go on until Thursday, two days before the municipal elections.
01:15The head of the unified command of the Bolivarian Revolution, Jorge Rodriguez, stated that the promotion of the over 37,000 projects the youth will vote for in the third national popular consultation 2025 will go forward until Sunday.

01:57In Guatemala, our team in the northern region of the country, the country has a new leadership team.
02:26of the country documented the stories most corporate media ignored and silenced during
02:31the caravans of pro of central american migrants that in october 2018 were looking to cross the
02:36territory heading to the u.s let's see
02:56greetings colleagues thank you very much for the signal when in guatemala it is just past 9 30 the
03:10members of the migrant caravans begin to reorganize the ranks created shortly after noon this october
03:16the 19th in order to cross the mexican border in an orderly manner and in groups of 40 people
03:21these images recorded by telesur on january the 16th 2021 in the pedro de alvarado border
03:29between guatemala and honduras show the repressive forces
03:35they weren't preparing to fight a declared enemy but to dissolve a river of people
03:41clinging to the hope of a promising future that pretended to cross watermelon territory heading for
03:46the u.s how is it possible that the government of this country treat migrants like this in spite
03:55that in the moment there was a new migration lying place since 2017 when migration in the country is
04:01declared a right the incident in that border was barely documented by some alternative media
04:09corporate media corporate media coverage had ceased after the first october 2018 caravan
04:18the presence of telezor gave migrants security i'm happy you are here i like it because you give
04:25us motivation and with you being around nobody's going to mistreat us because since you are media you
04:31can publish it that for me is beauty and we are now moving forward we are all moving forward
04:39during one of our routes in the distant department of peteng telesource team discovered a group of
04:44migrants cornered by the military under suspicious circumstances
04:51their presence positively changed these people's fates once we complied with their orders we went
04:58back where they sent us where they didn't follow biohazard measures because we were locked up like
05:03animals and then a truck from guatemalan army showed up and put over 200 people
05:11on january 17 2021 guatemalan armed forces stopped the advance of the second caravan
05:17thousands of migrants were left stranded for several days without water or food in the 177 kilometer in
05:24varro hondo chiquimula east guatemala we are dying of hunger we are dying of thirst we are dying because
05:33of the heat because the sun is burning us and they have no mercy so be conscious for our children we have
05:38children for the kids please do it for the kids i can't take it this anymore
05:42corporate press following the official speech presented migrants as criminal and gang members
05:55the narrative excused the repression ignoring multiple complaints against military men
06:02accused of shouting at migrants who were trying to run for the bushes
06:05in the name of this group of migrants that total to 15 000 people in this caravan we want to denounce
06:18before the international community that if the two people that went missing by the hill turn up dead
06:24it was the military who did it they run for the hill and people are saying that they were killed
06:29they were managed to document that the cause for the migrant caravan wasn't a monetary ambition
06:39but a desperate response to centuries of oppression invasion poverty and violence in the central
06:45american countries well we know that it is a wave of migrant that comes in caravan from honduras
06:52it is worrying that the human rights will not protect for these poor people
06:59that today are living because of the government of honduras that has no public care policies
07:06and no care for poor people and they have grown tired of the coercion during the pandemic
07:14the migrant caravan of october 2018 was more than news it was the tangible expression of the injustice
07:20and indifference experienced by the central american peoples the cruel handling by the government and
07:26with the complicit traditional press is still an open wound we are reminded that journalism in its purest
07:33form must represent the voice of the unprotected and of all those in disadvantage before those who carry
07:39the power and abuse it in other informations social movements in the united states denounced
07:53tortures against migrants detained at alligator alcatraz detention center according to allegations hundreds
08:00of migrants are living in makeshift cages with insects and little access to food these claims are
08:06supported by democrat legislators who warn that detainees can be heard screaming for help within the
08:12prison despite the claims immigration and customs control officials defend alligator alcatraz as a safe
08:19and secure place of high standard
08:26mexican president claudia shaman confirmed on tuesday that her administration has sent diplomatic
08:32notes to the united states following reports about the conditions at immigration detention centers
08:38during her morning press conference the head of state and bill the government is aware of the
08:42presence of mexican citizens in these centers and has requested their immediate deportation to prevent
08:49their continued detention in inadequate conditions furthermore shaman stated that the mexican consulate in
08:55the united states is verifying whether there are human rights violations in cases involving mexican
09:01nationals to date the mexican government has identified 14 mexicans detained in immigration centers
09:08in florida and consular efforts are being made for their repatriation
09:18when it came out that they were going to send detained migrants to guantanamo we sent a diplomatic note
09:24and the moment they published that this detention center existed we sent another diplomatic note
09:37so that any mexican would be deported immediately
09:42and not have to spend time in this detention center
09:45the consulate is checking whether there are human rights violations and if so the protocol that must be
09:51followed will be followed but what we have requested is that they be deported immediately so that we
09:56can repatriate them and now we have a short break coming up but first remember you can join us on
