00:30Hello, everybody. It's Countdown. It's Wednesday afternoon on our last show for a whole seven working days. A rare mid-series break for the best of reasons. We're not here tomorrow or Friday or all of next week because of Channel 4's coverage of the Paralympics. All the action right here. The opening ceremony tonight. And it takes us back, Rachel, to London 2012 when it was announced that the Paralympic coverage would be in Channel 4.
00:58And all I remember is the swagger it had. It was game changing. The last leg only exists now because of that, which was just brilliant. But do you remember? It was a real game changer.
01:10I mean, rightly, Channel 4 were really proud of it. So they had a big launch party. And I remember I went down to Channel 4 HQ and they'd actually built a mini basketball court.
01:19And they had wheelchairs. So we got to play wheelchair basketball. And I remember playing with Steve Brown, who used to play wheelchair rugby.
01:25And Gordon Ramsay, the chef, was also playing. Give me a go at him and murder ball. So we got to play wheelchair basketball.
01:33But the hardest thing is trying to throw the ball without using your legs because you automatically do. So all these boys were cheating, getting out of their chairs.
01:40I mean, it's so much fun, but it's obviously, you know, someone had some foresight to buy that. And now it's a kind of a staple, isn't it?
01:47Yeah, absolutely. But listen, Susie Dent joined for our three days this week by a Paralympic British legend, Kadena Cox.
01:54By the magic of television, people will see you tonight. Although, I don't know, are you, because you're competing tomorrow on Thursday, do you then skip the opening ceremony?
02:03Yep, I have never been to an open ceremony, which is annoying. But quite a lot of us aren't allowed to go just because of when we start competing.
02:11So I'll watch from probably a lot of the time they have a spot outside where we can all watch together, put on our like kit and pretend or actually walking around.
02:19And we just sit together and chin wag.
02:21Right, Kadena, great to have you here to mark this really special week on Channel 4.
02:26So who's going to go into the Paralympic break as champion? Will it be Alex Call, who is our bookshop owner from Swindon?
02:33Hey, Alex, one win in the bag. So let's talk about signings and the famous names that come to your mind who've been in to sign your book.
02:41I think just because of sort of the name power of them, Dame Jackie Collins.
02:46Oh, no.
02:47Sir Roger Moore.
02:49That was a cool one.
02:50Sirs and Dames all the way.
02:52Sitting there drinking wine with Roger Moore was pretty cool.
02:55Well, you're up against Lorraine Graham, who might corner you later, win or lose, because your dream is to become a full-time author and you write quite a lot, yeah?
03:03Yeah, I would love to do that.
03:04I would love to just travel about writing, making up stories about where I am and the people that walk past.
03:11Yeah.
03:11Yeah, that would be my dream.
03:12Definitely got that creative, crafty brain going on.
03:14Oh, I love it.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Crafty, not crafty.
03:17You know what I mean.

05:56Lorraine?
05:59I've got a nine, but I've not written it down.
06:02That's OK. Alex?
06:04I've got an eight.
06:05Let's do the eight.
06:06Migrated.
06:08Migrated. Lorraine, what have you not written down?
06:10Dreaming. Oh, dreaming is there, but it's an eight.
06:13Oh!
06:14Listen, console yourself that you did get an eight, right?
06:17Which is very good indeed. You just misdeclared.
06:19So, migrated. Anything else?
06:22Yes, one more eight.
06:23Yeah, emigrant.
06:25Loads of eights, but no nine.
06:26No nine, unless you're Lorraine.
06:29Right, numbers and Alex.
06:31One from the top and five from anywhere else, please.
06:33Thank you, Alex. One large, five little.
06:36And the first numbers of the day are seven, two, six, nine, two.
06:43And the large one, 100.
06:45And the target to reach 689.
06:48Six, eight, nine. Numbers up.
06:49Two, three, five, seven.
06:51Two, five, seven, eight.
06:53Six, eight, nine, the target.
07:22Alex?
07:23Six, eight, nine.
07:24And Lorraine?
07:25Six, eight, nine.
07:26Nice. Off you go, Alex.
07:27100 minus two.
07:29100 minus two, 98.
07:30Times seven.
07:31Times seven, 686.
07:34And then nine minus six is three, and add them together.
07:37Lovely. Six, eight, nine.
07:38And Lorraine?
07:39Added seven times 100, 700, nine plus two is 11, and take it away.
07:44Lovely.
07:45Well done. Same result.
07:47APPLAUSE
07:49And ten points each. Just a missed declaration between them.
07:52Going to be a close affair today.
07:53And your tea-time teaser is Aphid Poem.
07:56Aphid Poem.
07:58It's all about a tale about a horse.
08:00It's all about a tail about a horse.
08:03It's all about a tail about a horse.
08:07APPLAUSE
08:11Welcome back.
08:15Even if you worked out that tea-time teaser, you might not know what it means.
08:18So let's head over to Dictionary Corner.
08:19It's all about a tail about a horse was the clue.
08:20And Hippodame, Susie?
08:21Yes.
08:22So it's only ever mentioned in reference to one particular piece of work, which is Spencer's
08:23Fairy Queen, Edmund Spencer's Fairy Queen.
08:24A mythical creature with a head, neck, shoulders and four legs of a horse and a body ending
08:29on the tail of a fish or a dolphin.
08:30And its name may, and it's all conjecture, go back to a woman who features in Greek mythology,
08:36Hippodamia.
08:37Hippodamia.
08:38How truly bizarre.
08:39As we get back to the game and Lorraine's letters.
08:40Um, consonant, please, Rachel.
08:41Thank you, Lorraine.
08:42T.
08:43And a vowel?
08:44O.
08:45And another consonant?
08:46N.
08:47And a vowel?
08:48N.
08:49And a vowel?
08:50N.
08:51And another consonant?
08:52N.
08:53And a vowel?
08:54N.
08:55And a vowel?
08:56T.
08:57And a vowel?
08:58O.
08:59And another consonant?
09:00N.
09:01N.
09:02N.
09:03N.
09:04N.
09:05N.
09:06N.
09:07And a vowel?
09:08E.
09:09And a consonant?
09:11P.
09:12Another consonant?
09:14L.
09:15And another consonant?
09:18P.
09:19And a vowel, please?
09:21A.
09:22And a final consonant?
09:25A final R.
09:27Thanks, Rich.
09:28A final consonant?
09:29A final consonant?
09:30Thanks, Rich.
09:31A final consonant?
09:53A final consonant?
09:55Lorraine?
10:00Seven.
10:01Alex?
10:02Seven.
10:03Well done, Lorraine.
10:04Propane.
10:06Propane.
10:06Cooking on gas.
10:07And Alex?
10:08Planter.
10:08And planter.
10:09Very nice.
10:10There you go.
10:10Another seven points each.
10:13We just keep up, really, today.
10:15Very good, both of you.
10:16And what can we add?
10:18Something I actually don't like.
10:20Polenta for seven as well.
10:22Polenta.
10:23Oh, yeah, I've had that now.
10:24A few times.
10:25Chips, polenta chips.
10:27Quite like them, but all right.
10:28Not quite like a normal chip.
10:30No.
10:30What about you, Rich?
10:31Like a polenta?
10:32Of course I do.
10:33You knew that.
10:34Right up your strass of the polenta, isn't it?
10:37Right.
10:38More letters, please, if you could serve us those, please, Alex.
10:41I'll have a consonant, please, Rachel.
10:42Thank you, Alex.
10:44S.
10:45And a vowel, please.
10:47O.
10:48And a consonant, please.
10:50R.
10:51And a vowel, please.
10:53E.
10:54And a consonant.
10:56F.
10:57And a consonant, please.
11:00S.
11:01And another vowel, please.
11:04A.
11:05And a consonant, please.
11:07G.
11:08And a final vowel, please.
11:11And a final E.
11:14And a half a minute.
11:14That's right.
11:38Alex, a seven.
11:47And for you, Lorraine? A seven as well.
11:49Go ahead, Alex. Forages.
11:51Forages and Lorraine? Same word.
11:53Yeah. How did the dictionary corner get on?
11:56So we've just got another seven greases.
11:59Greases. Yes.
12:00All right, quick as lightning then. We'll go back to the numbers.
12:03Can I have two large, please, Rachel?
12:06You can indeed, and four little ones.
12:07Yes, coming up.
12:09And for this round, your four small numbers.
12:11Five, five, three and one.
12:15And the large two, 50 and 75.
12:18And with them, you need to make 771.
12:21771. Numbers up.
12:377, 7, 1. Lorraine?
12:57I lost it there. I've got 750.
12:59OK, not close enough, Alex.
13:01771. Off you go.
13:03So 75 minus 3.
13:0572.
13:06And then 5 plus 5 is 10.
13:085 plus 5 is 10.
13:09Multiply them together.
13:11720.
13:12And add the 50 and the 1.
13:13Well done, 771.
13:15Well done.
13:18Big numbers round for our champion, Alex.
13:20What is our last countdown for a whole seven working days?
13:24Now, usually, we don't even like being off for Christmas,
13:27but we're very, very happy to be off for Channel 4's Paralympic coverage,
13:31which, just before we get to Kadena's big week ahead,
13:34like, it was, you first competed in Rio.
13:37Four years earlier was London.
13:38When it sort of moved to Channel 4, I used the word swagger.
13:41Is that accurate enough?
13:43Yeah, I feel like it just changed the game so much.
13:47I wasn't disabled in 2012,
13:51but I watched the Paralympics,
13:53probably more so than the Olympics,
13:55just because it was, just the vibe is what I'll say.
13:59And the last leg, like, I absolutely loved it.
14:02And the one thing I wanted to do when I competed in Rio
14:05was get on the last leg.
14:07I literally said to Adam Hill,
14:08I was like, can you just give me a mention, please?
14:11So it was really cool when I got on it
14:12and there was, like, the mural behind me on it.
14:15But it just changed the game for us
14:16and, like, just, like, promoting Paralympic sport
14:19and the way it was promoted, like, you know,
14:21I'm a Paralympian and, you know, people see me, like, on TV
14:25because of, like, stuff, the way it was kind of broadcast in that period.
14:29Like, people see us now as, like, athletes
14:31rather than just, yeah, those Paralympians
14:32that rock up once every four years.
14:34And, by the way, you've been on Countdown,
14:35so you're now nerd cool,
14:37which is one step up from being cool.
14:3934 goals in London, 64 goals in Rio, 41 in Tokyo.
14:44I mean, so I can't go through all the names,
14:46but you've got the athletes going back, like yourself.
14:49I want to mention Bethany first because I love her to death.
14:52But then you've got the new athletes going out.
14:54Do you feel a little bit of a mother role or do you have to be...
14:59Will you stop and go,
15:00I know it's your first time, don't go to that party,
15:02don't do that, don't get involved in that,
15:05stay out of there because you know the code, the combination.
15:09Yeah, I am a bit old now, so I am in that kind of role.
15:12But, I mean, I train with a couple of athletes
15:14and you do kind of have to be, like, you know,
15:17focus on the competition, like...
15:19But with the Paralympics,
15:21it's such a rare opportunity to be at a multi-sports game,
15:25you know, with so many people from different sports,
15:27different nations, like, you see different impairments
15:29and it is actually quite nice to be able to, you know,
15:33mix up with, like, different sports, different nations.
15:35So I always say, you know, go and, like, explore,
15:38but obviously you've just got to focus on, like,
15:39what your actual race is.
15:40So, yeah, it's kind of just giving the athletes
15:43a little bit of guidance.
15:45Like, if you see them, like, you know,
15:46being out too much or being sat in the canteen for too long,
15:48just giving them a little bit of a nudge,
15:50but also, like, wanting them to enjoy it
15:52because probably my biggest regret up until now
15:56is not having...
15:58I wouldn't say I haven't enjoyed the games that I've done,
16:00but... What do you mean?
16:01..because it's just, yeah, I've not really stopped
16:02to, like, take it in and enjoy the moment,
16:04which is what I'll hopefully do this time.
16:06Best luck to you.
16:07It's just been great to have you here this week.
16:09APPLAUSE
16:10The private jet is waiting for Kadena.
16:14Out the back, it will take off at one minute past three.
16:17Let's get back to the game.

17:27I'll get a seven.

17:39OK, I thought.
17:40No, it's not there.
17:42So, obviously, berries is there, but not berries with two R's, I'm afraid.
17:46Sorry, the way you took it.
17:47Sorry.
17:48We had a couple more to add to the list.
17:51Have you got Kodina?
17:52Yeah, we had brassier or airbusses.
17:57Airbusses again.
17:58Brassier.
17:59Mm.
17:59Is this just more brass?
18:00Well, more brassier.
18:01So, if you're brassier, you can be quite sort of brazen and in your face.
18:05Oh, OK.
18:05Yeah.
18:06All right, more letters, please.
18:07Thank you very much, Lorraine.

19:18Lorraine? Seven.
19:20Alex? Out of the six.
19:22The six is? Griped.
19:24This better be a seven, Lorraine.
19:26Thank you so much. Pungier.
19:28So we have pungent and...
19:30Oh! Come on!
19:32Pungy is in as a noun, but not as an adjective.
19:36I think pungent would be it.
19:38Let me, on your behalf,
19:40throw my pen down in disgust.
19:42Let's check dictionary corners. I suppose you're going to say
19:44pungier, aren't you? We are.
19:46Salt into

21:09Yeah.
21:1010 more points.
21:13The champ, as we get this teatime teaser, chose poor.
21:17Chose poor.
21:17She chose a poor day to read this.
21:19Her prospects were bleak.
21:21She chose a poor day to read this.
21:23Her prospects were bleak.
21:24The idea there's only 12 days anyone's having, I can't be having horoscopes, stuff like that.
21:51What about you?
21:51It's just what a typical Pisces would say.
21:53Don't, don't even, don't even.
21:56Let's get back to the game before I get crabby.

23:07Only four.
23:08Just a four.

23:10Just a four as well.
23:11Yeah, difficult one, Lorraine?
23:13Work.
23:14And for you, Alex?
23:15Yeah, work.
23:16There you go, it'll work then.
23:18Four points each, definitely better as we head over to Dexter's New Corner,
23:21although I'd imagine not much better.
23:23A couple of sixes we had.
23:24A turbot and outwit.
23:29Yes.
23:29Oh, goodness me, well done.
23:31Did you get a turbot, the fish?
23:33Yes.
23:33And a trout.
23:34Ha!
23:36We outfished you.
23:37Oh, you did indeed.

24:15So, yeah.
24:46Alex?
24:47Seven.
24:48Lorraine?
24:49Seven as well.
24:50Alex, what have you got?
24:51Mantles.
24:52Mantles and Lorraine?
24:53Laments.
24:54Laments?
24:55Yeah.
24:55And mantles?
24:56Very nice.
24:57Two sevens.
24:58What can we add?
24:58Just another seven, omental.
25:00Oh, mental, what's that?
25:01Yes, it's to do with the omentum,
25:03which is a bit of the stomach that connects other organs.
25:06OK, well, it's more about momentum here,
25:08which Alex has with four rounds left,
25:11but time for Origins Awards.
25:13Well, thank you.
25:15I'm going to completely fall on my face here
25:17because it involves my trying to do an accent.
25:20I think I'm going to try not to do an accent.
25:22Exactly.
25:23No, you have to.
25:24I just can't.
25:25We demand it, Rachel, don't we?
25:26It depends which one.
25:27Well, the email comes from Colin Day,
25:32who says,
25:33I've lived near and also worked in Bristol for a couple of years.
25:37Yeah, don't do it.
25:39Do it.
25:42Actually, he says, quite a number of years.
25:43And he said,
25:44originating from London and Bedfordshire,
25:46it's always made me think about the practice of Bristolians,
25:49of adding letters to the end of words.
25:52And he's particularly thinking about adding an L to the end of words.
25:56And if you look on certain video sites,
25:59you can find lots and lots of examples of Bristolians being interviewed.
26:03And they have no clue that the word that you and I would say,
26:07like opera, exists because they would call it operal.
26:11And they don't, when challenged on it,
26:13they just don't quite understand what they're doing.
26:15It is that ingrained and inbuilt.
26:18The question is why?
26:19And it's a really tricky one to answer
26:21because we always think about language evolving
26:24through vocabulary changing, new words coming in, slang,
26:28you know, flipping existing words into different ones.
26:31But we don't really think about pronunciation and sound changes,
26:34which happen all the time.
26:36So there was something in the history of English
26:38called the Great Vowel Shift,
26:40which is when a lot of our sounds changed
26:42and spelling and sound just went in completely different directions.
26:46Now, Bristol, believe it or not,
26:47is a really good example of how they add an L
26:49because there was no L in the Old English name.
26:52It was Brigstow.
26:53It meant placed by a bridge,
26:55but they even put an L in there as well.
26:58And it seems to be just something that is passed on
27:00from generation to generation.
27:02And in other ways, we are messing around with Ls,
27:05particularly when they're in the middle of words.
27:06So we say milk sometimes.
27:09We don't say milk, for example.
27:11We say children.
27:12We don't really pronounce the L.
27:14So the L is kind of getting a little bit glided over there.
27:16Palm.
27:17We don't say palm, et cetera.
27:19So I hate to say that we don't have a particularly exact or precise answer
27:26to this, Colin, but it has been recorded for a very long time
27:29and, as I said, it's happening in other parts of words as well.
27:32But I think it's a lovely distinctive characteristic of Bristolian
27:35and long may it continue.
27:36Absolutely.
27:36Couldn't agree more.
27:38APPLAUSE
27:38All right, 84.42, with four rounds left to play.
27:46Come on, Lorraine, let's make this a big one.
27:49Consonant, please, Rachel.
27:51Thank you, Lorraine.
27:51C.
27:52And another consonant?
27:54T.
27:55And another consonant?
27:57L.
27:59And a vowel, please.
28:01A.
28:01And another consonant?
28:04M.
28:06And a consonant, please.
28:08L.
28:09And a vowel, please.
28:12O.
28:13And another vowel, please.
28:16I.
28:18And a consonant, please.
28:21And lastly, X.
28:23And let's play.
28:31MUSIC PLAYS
28:54That's time, Lorraine.
28:56Best six.
28:58And for you, Alex.
28:59Just a five.
28:59The five is?
29:00Clean.
29:00Come on, Lorraine.
29:02Oh, actually, it's not.
29:03Mallet with an O.
29:05It's an A.
29:06Oh, yeah, you need an A.
29:07Oh.
29:08Sorry, Lorraine.
29:08Just realised that there.
29:10Unlocking.
29:11Yeah.
29:12Kadina?
29:12We had a couple of sixes.
29:16Climax and oxtail, one of my old favourite foods.
29:19Nice, love it.
29:20Love it.
29:21Is that not for training, is it, oxtail soup?
29:23Don't eat it anymore.
29:24I'm actually pescatarian now, and it's a bit fatty, the oxtail.
29:29I'd say so, it wouldn't be a training soup.
29:30Right, last letters.
29:33Let's do it, Alex.
29:34Consonant, please, Rachel.
29:36Thank you, Alex.

30:40And for you, Lorraine?
30:42Seven.
30:43Seven, OK.
30:44Alex?
30:44Storied.
30:46Storied.
30:46And Lorraine?
30:47Actually, sod chair.
30:49How are you spelling it?
30:50S-O-D-G-I-E-R.
30:53I don't think something can be sodgy, but I love the idea of it.
30:56And sodier isn't in, unfortunately.
31:00Do you think maybe you had stodgier in your head?
31:03Oh, that's probably.
31:04Yeah.
31:05Stodgier it was.
31:06The dictionary corner, what did you spot?
31:09Because there's more big words.
31:11Yeah, we did have stodgier.
31:12And we had another eight.
31:14Dodgiest.
31:15Yeah.
31:16Good, yeah.
31:17If you're sitting at home with dodgier, you're kicking yourself now.
31:19Yeah, dodgiest.
31:21At 96.42, two rounds to go.
31:24Could Alex get a century up for a second when, Lorraine, you're picking the numbers?
31:30Two large, please, Rachel.
31:31Thank you, Lorraine.

31:33Four little ones to finish the week.
31:35And this last numbers game is 9-7-7-8-25.

32:23Yeah, I didn't. I lost it.
32:25No worries. And Alex?
32:269-0-9.
32:27OK, off you go for seven points.
32:2875 plus 25.
32:30Is 100.
32:31Times that by nine.
32:32900.
32:33Add the eight.
32:349-0-8.

32:41Well done, get you your century at 9-1-1.
32:44Number, please.
32:46You'll have to leave it with me.

32:48Difficult.
32:50OK, well, listen, not long to get there,
32:52because we're nearly done for the day,
32:54and, in fact, done until Monday week.
32:56But we've got this.
32:57Let's go out in style, please.
32:58Alex and Lorraine, fingers on the buzzers
33:00as we reveal the countdown conundrum.
33:08Lorraine, go on.
33:09Oh, it's not.
33:09I thought it was demi-graph, but it's not.
33:11You're saying demi-graph.
33:12It isn't.
33:13Let's go, Alex.
33:15Off you go.
