Bangladesh is observing a day of mourning after at least 27 people were killed when a military jet crashed into a school.

Many of the victims were students who had just come out of class when an F-7 jet crashed into the Milestone School and College in the capital Dhaka.

The armed forces said that the jet had reportedly experienced a mechanical fault after taking off for a training exercise, with the pilot being among those killed, adding that an investigation would be held.

The crash marks the deadliest aviation disaster the country has seen in decades.

00:00Now, Bangladesh is observing a day of national mourning for at least 27 people killed when an
00:05Air Force training jet crashed into a school. The plane came down whilst children were preparing
00:10to go home at the end of the day at Milestone School in the capital, Dhaka. While the country's
00:16interim leader, Mohamed Yunus, has promised an investigation into the cause of the crash,
00:20he said the thoughts of the whole country were with the victims' families. Our correspondent
00:24in Delhi, Devina Gupta, has been following the latest developments on the crash.
00:28It's one of the worst aviation tragedies that Bangladesh has seen in decades for now. And
00:35what we do know is that the official death toll has risen from the last night because there were
00:41several people who were in critical conditions and they couldn't make it. Unfortunately, the health
00:48officials have confirmed that 25 of those 27 who have been confirmed dead are minors. And that's
00:56because when the jet crashed into that two-storied building, which is a school, the maximum impact
01:03was seen in the junior wing of that school. There were many students who were still inside
01:09that compound. There were some people who were trying to meet their kids in that compound. And
01:15those are the children who've been worst affected. But the health officials have also confirmed that
01:2278 people are being treated in different hospitals across the city. There's been a nationwide call
01:28for blood donation. And the government has said that for now, the medical expenses of these
01:34victims will be borne by them.
