00:00I will retire at the right time, August 2027.
00:10We have amongst us some wise nationalists.
00:15I shared the tag wise with them.
00:18I don't want to forget them.
00:21We must form a union to get a substitute name.
00:26Shri Sarbanan Sunawadji lacks one thing terribly.
00:34He doesn't know how to quote enemies because he has none.
00:40And ladies and gentlemen, my docket is full of them.
00:45I need guidance from my faculty that can help me tide over this very daunting, menacing problem.
00:54I can only assure you my fullest commitment to be a good student.
01:00Professor Shanti Shri, Dhuli Pudhi Pandit Ji, Vice Chancellor JNU, Professor MS Chetra, Director Iksha, Akhil Bharatiya Toli Sadashya, Prajna Parva.
01:18Mania Nandakumar Ji, Please, you may retire.
01:30I will retire at the right time.
01:33August 2027, Subject to Divine Intervention.
01:47Mania Nandakumar Ji,
01:48We have Padam Shri, Dr. M.B. Chidniwas, a person who has focused on something unique, history of science and technology.
02:07We have amongst us some wise counselors.
02:14I shared that type of wise with them.
02:16I don't want to forget them.
02:20We must form a union to get a substitute name.
02:25Because, unlike me, most do not suffer vices.
02:39But trust me, my vices have nothing to do with my marriage or my profession.
02:45So, Vice Chancellor Nirja Gupta Ji, Professor Yugani Goyal Ji, then we have amongst us, Professor Ram Subramaniam Ji, IIT, Bombay.
03:03And, of course, Manoj Shindji Ji, Patron Iksha.
03:15Aaj bhoot shubh din hai.
03:19Doh karun se.
03:21Aaj ka awi jan,
03:24Guru Puri Namah par hai.
03:26Sabhi ko haad dik shubh ka amai.
03:28It is a facet of Indian knowledge system.
03:37May sabhi merhe gurujanoh ko pranam karta ho.
03:42Merhe matah pita,
03:45merhe dada dada di,
03:47merhe nana nani,
03:49merhe gurujanoh kse makshti,
03:51sabhi ko pranam.
03:54We have in the audience people,
03:57who qualify to the status of gurujan.
04:03My respectful reverence to all of you.
04:08Friends, it is delight to inaugurate
04:11first annual academic conference
04:12on Indian knowledge system.
04:16It has not come a day too soon.
04:18My warmest compliments
04:22to the JNU
04:24and Iksha
04:26for pioneering this initiative.
04:30Much needed initiative
04:31and contemporaneously
04:34highly relevant.
04:36At the heart of this conference
04:39lies a profound truth
04:42undiluted,
04:45unqualified.
04:48India is not just a political construct.
04:52It is much beyond.
04:54It wasn't formed
04:56in the mid-twentieth century.
05:00It's a civilizational
05:01continent,
05:04a flowing river
05:05of consciousness,
05:07inquiry,
05:08and learning
05:09that has endured
05:11as was reflected
05:13by
05:13Shri Sonowalji
05:16across millennia.
05:20I have a small caveat.
05:22Mine is not a keynote address.
05:25Sonowalji
05:26imparted a keynote address.
05:31Friends,
05:33countries live in centuries.
05:35India thrives
05:38and lives
05:39in yugas.
05:41Yug.
05:45Bharat
05:46breathes
05:46through recitation
05:47of Vedas
05:48and Upanishads.
05:50It speaks
05:51through the intricate
05:53sutras of Panini.
05:55It calculates
05:56with the precision
05:58of Aryabhat.
06:00And it governs
06:02with the prudence,
06:04patience,
06:05of Kotilie.
06:11India is unique
06:12in the world
06:13on the planet.
06:15India's story
06:16is an unbroken narrative
06:18of human aspiration.
06:21Aspiration
06:21towards knowledge,
06:24harmony,
06:26transcendence.
06:29Long before
06:30universities of Europe
06:31came into being.
06:35these universities
06:36began to steer.
06:38India had already
06:39established
06:40much before
06:41thriving centers
06:43of learning.
06:45Our ancient land
06:46was home
06:46to luminous centers
06:49of intellectual life.
06:52Takshila,
06:53Nalanda,
06:53Nalanda,
06:55Vikramshila,
06:56Wallabhi,
06:57Odhantpuri.
06:59These were the
07:00towering citadels
07:01of knowledge.
07:04Their libraries
07:04were vast oceans
07:06of wisdom,
07:08housing tens
07:09and thousands
07:09of manuscripts.
07:10these were global
07:14universities
07:15where seekers
07:17came from lands
07:18near and far,
07:20from Korea
07:21and China,
07:23Tibet
07:24and Persia.
07:26These were
07:27spaces
07:27where the intellect
07:29of the world
07:29embraced
07:30the spirit of birth.
07:32that inclusivity
07:35which some
07:37tried to teach us.
07:40They should be
07:40learning from us.
07:45India did not
07:46just teach.
07:48India welcomed,
07:50debated,
07:51exchanged
07:52and inspired.
07:54Let me read out
07:55a quote from
07:56Max Muller's lecture
07:57to incoming
07:59British ICS
08:01officers
08:01because it
08:03bears relevance.
08:05I quote,
08:06If I were asked
08:08under what sky
08:09the human mind
08:11has most
08:12fully developed,
08:14some of its
08:15choicest gifts
08:16has most
08:18deeply pondered
08:19on the greatest
08:20problems of life
08:21and
08:23has found
08:24solutions
08:25or some of them
08:26which well
08:28deserves the
08:29attention
08:29even of those
08:31who studied
08:32Plato
08:33and Kant,
08:36I should
08:36point to
08:37India
08:37and
08:38quote.
08:41Friends,
08:43it was
08:44nothing
08:45but
08:46articulation
08:47of
08:48eternal
08:49truth.
08:51But then
08:52friends,
08:53came
08:53an
08:54intreganum
08:55a very
08:57gory
08:57intreganum
08:58barbarism
08:59prevailed

09:17of
09:17knowledge
09:17that
09:18was
09:19accumulated
09:19over
09:20centuries
09:21painstakingly.
09:22Islamic
09:24invasion
09:25of India
09:27caused
09:28the first
09:28interlude
09:29in the
09:30glorious
09:30journey
09:31of
09:32Bharatiya
09:32Vidya
09:33Parampra.
09:34Instead
09:35of embrace
09:36and assimilation,
09:38there was
09:39contempt
09:40and destruction.
09:44The British
09:44colonization
09:45brought forth
09:46the second
09:48interlude
09:48when Indian
09:50knowledge
09:50system
09:51was
09:51stunted,
09:53stimulated
09:54and
09:54subverted.
09:57Centers
09:57of learning
09:58changed
09:58their motives.
10:01The compass
10:01was moderated.
10:04The
10:04North
10:04Star
10:05was
10:07changed.
10:09From
10:09bearing
10:10sages
10:10and
10:10servants
10:11it
10:12started
10:12producing
10:13clerks
10:14and
10:14yeomen.
10:16The
10:17needs
10:17of the
10:17East
10:18India
10:18company
10:18to
10:19have
10:19brown
10:19babus
10:20replaced
10:21the
10:23need
10:23of the
10:24nation
10:24to
10:25have
10:25thinkers.
10:27Our
10:28glorious
10:29inalienable
10:31facet
10:32over
10:33millennia
10:34we
10:36stopped
10:36thinking,
10:37contemplating,
10:38writing
10:39and
10:40philosophizing.
10:42We
10:42started
10:43claiming,
10:45regurgitating,
10:47solving.
10:49Greats
10:49unfortunately
10:50replaced
10:51critical
10:54thinking.
10:56The
10:56great
10:56Bharatiya
10:57Vidya
10:57Parampra
10:58and
10:59its
10:59allied
10:59institutions
11:00were
11:02systematically
11:02drained.
11:04destructed
11:06and
11:06decimated.
11:09Resultantly,
11:11we
11:11became
11:11consumers
11:12of a
11:12knowledge
11:13system
11:13whose
11:14authors
11:15neither
11:16belonged to
11:17Bharat
11:17nor
11:18understood
11:19its
11:19spirit
11:20nor at
11:21their
11:21heart
11:22was
11:23our
11:24concern.
11:26A new
11:26layer of
11:27civilization
11:27narrative
11:28seeped
11:29in colonial
11:29prejudices
11:30and this
11:32was imposed
11:33upon us
11:34recklessly,
11:36ruthlessly
11:37and unfortunately
11:39it permeated.
11:42Their purpose
11:43was not
11:43discovery,
11:44it was
11:45domination.
11:48Their scholarship
11:48was not
11:49born of
11:49reverence
11:50but of
11:51condition
11:52through their
11:54distorted
11:54lens.
11:56India's
11:56profound
11:57philosophies
11:58were reduced
12:00to
12:00superstition.
12:02What a
12:03travesty!
12:05What
12:06unbearable
12:06pain!
12:08Western
12:09constructs
12:10were paraded
12:10as universal
12:11truths.
12:14To put it
12:15more bluntly,
12:16untruth
12:17was
12:18camouflaged
12:19as truth.
12:22While
12:22indigenous
12:22insights
12:23were dismissed
12:24as relics
12:24of primitive
12:25past,
12:27this was
12:27not an
12:28error
12:28of
12:28interpretation,
12:30it was
12:30an
12:31architecture
12:31of
12:33erasure,
12:35destruction,
12:36decimation.
12:38And
12:38what is
12:39more tragic,
12:40this selective
12:40remembrance
12:41continued
12:42even after
12:43independence.
12:46What
12:46should
12:47have
12:47been
12:47our
12:47fundamental
12:48priority
12:48was
12:50not
12:51even
12:51on
12:51the
12:51radar.
12:54How
12:54can
12:55you
12:55be
12:55not
12:56cognizant
12:56of
12:57your
12:58core
12:58values?
13:02Instead
13:03of
13:03healing,
13:04we
13:04inherited
13:04the
13:05very
13:05biases
13:05we
13:07fought
13:07to
13:07overthrow.
13:10We
13:10adopted
13:11their
13:11practices.
13:14Marxist
13:14perverse
13:16and
13:16replaced
13:17colonial
13:18distortion.
13:21And
13:21friends,
13:21even
13:21today,
13:23the
13:23shadows
13:24of
13:24those
13:24colonial
13:24misreadings
13:25continue
13:27to
13:27shape
13:28textbooks,
13:29curricular
13:29minds.
13:32They
13:33continue
13:33to
13:33demand
13:34respect.
13:37There
13:37are
13:37narratives
13:38in
13:38their
13:38favor.
13:41A
13:41matter
13:41of
13:42deep
13:42reflection
13:42and
13:45of
13:45worrisome
13:45concern.
13:48But
13:48friends,
13:50today's
13:50gathering
13:51is far
13:53more than
13:53sentimental
13:54gaze
13:54backward
13:55or a
13:57nostalgic
13:57remembrance
13:58of our
13:58golden
13:59age.
14:00It
14:01is
14:01game
14:01changing.
14:02The
14:05step
14:06taken
14:06here
14:06during
14:07three
14:07days
14:07will
14:07go
14:08a
14:08long
14:08way.
14:10This
14:10conference,
14:11I believe
14:12strongly,
14:14stands as a
14:15serious
14:15academic
14:16endeavor
14:16to correct
14:18a
14:19historical
14:19wrong,
14:21aberrations
14:22that are
14:22painful
14:23for us,
14:24aberrations
14:25that urge
14:26us to
14:26question,
14:27investigate,
14:29critique,
14:29and rediscover.
14:32Now
14:33is the
14:33time to
14:34cast off
14:34the chains
14:35of borrowed
14:35narratives,
14:38inherited
14:38distortions.
14:40It
14:40is time
14:41to reclaim
14:41our
14:43intellectual
14:43sovereignty.
14:46This
14:47will be
14:47done,
14:47friends,
14:48through
14:49hard and
14:49patient
14:50scholarship.
14:52We
14:52would
14:53require
14:53an army
14:54of
14:54translators,
14:56researchers,
14:58PhDs,
14:58post-doctors,
15:01professors,
15:02analysts,
15:03linguists,
15:04modelers,
15:05and the
15:05like.
15:11There
15:12is
15:12growing
15:13need,
15:15an
15:15urgent
15:15need,
15:17to
15:17bridge
15:18what is
15:18often
15:19seen
15:19as a
15:20divide
15:20between
15:21tradition
15:21and
15:22modernity.
15:23It
15:24doesn't
15:24exist.
15:25This
15:27divide
15:28is
15:28artificial
15:29and
15:31intellectually
15:32lazy.
15:34The
15:35wisdom
15:35of the
15:35past
15:36does not
15:36obstruct
15:37innovation,
15:39rather
15:39it inspires
15:40it.
15:42The
15:42metaphysical
15:43can speak
15:44to the
15:44material,
15:46spiritual
15:47insight
15:47can
15:48coexist
15:49with
15:49scientific
15:50precision,
15:50but
15:51then
15:52you have
15:53to know
15:54what is
15:54spiritual
15:55insight.
15:58The
15:58Rig Veda
15:58hymns
15:59to the
15:59cosmos
16:00can find
16:01new
16:01relevance
16:02in the
16:03age of
16:03astrophysics.
16:04The
16:06Charak
16:06Samhita
16:06can be
16:07read
16:07alongside
16:08global
16:09debates
16:10on
16:10public
16:11health
16:11ethics.
16:13As
16:13we
16:13navigate
16:14a
16:15fractured
16:16world,
16:18we
16:18are
16:18stunned
16:19by
16:21global
16:21conflagrations.
16:24So
16:25we
16:25are
16:25faced
16:25with
16:26a
16:26fractured
16:27world,
16:29knowledge
16:29systems
16:29that
16:30are
16:30long
16:30reflected
16:31on
16:32the
16:32interplay
16:32between
16:33mind
16:34and
16:34matter,
16:36the
16:36individual
16:36and
16:37the
16:37cosmos.
16:38Duty
16:39and
16:39consequence
16:40become
16:41relevant
16:42and
16:42vital
16:43to
16:44shaping
16:44thoughtful
16:45enduring
16:45responses.
16:47This
16:47can
16:47emanate
16:48only
16:48from
16:49this
16:49land
16:49for
16:50the
16:51benefit
16:51of
16:51the
16:51global
16:52community.
16:54India
16:54must
16:54not
16:54merely
16:55import
16:55global
16:56narratives.
16:58We
16:58do
