Young Farmers Committee member and Harden-Boorowa branch vice president Jess Ryan discusses the motions presented today.
Transcript
00:00It was really exciting to see that the first farm buyers motion was undebated and straight through carried.
00:06That shows that a lot of these guys in the room are really wanting to help support us get in and are seeing that it's getting harder and harder.
00:13It's not now $20 an acre, it's $10,000 an acre, depending on where you are, $2,000 an acre.
00:20So to see that go through undebated was really exciting.
00:23And then to be able to see one of our young farmers talk to the other motion around insurance and debate it quite well was also exciting to see the growth that we have coming through our council.
00:35It takes a lot of courage.
00:37This is my fourth conference and I think that's the first time I've ever spoken into a microphone.
00:41So it does take a lot of courage to get up and have a conversation.
00:44But to then be rewarded with the first time being you get it carried is a great way to get over those nerves and to know that you are passionate about this as everybody else is in the room as well.
00:55So it's exciting.
00:56For me, fortunately, I've got my family farm and I've just gone and bought a house in town so that I can come home and be able to help out on the farm as well.
01:05So that's fortunate enough for me that I've been able to do that.
01:08But in terms of if I was trying to buy a farm for myself, I'm decades off being able to save enough money to do that.
01:15And so with the first home buyer scheme, I had to put up 5% of the total value.
01:21But with buying farming land, you've got to put up something like 50% of the value for a deposit.
01:29So that gets a little difficult when you start adding up those dollars per acre.
01:33And so for that program, I know that the help to buy schemes for about 10,000 people, it'd be very competitive.
01:39What would it look like to have a farm?
01:40Does it need to be more than 10,000?
01:42Would it need to be acknowledging, hey, that 5% could be millions of dollars if you're talking about a big farm there?
01:48Yeah, that 5% could mean a yes or a no from the bank, really, when it comes down to it.
01:54If you don't have the backing of a wealthy family to help you get through that door, like that 5% could change it for everything.
02:02You're going to start to see more Australian farms owned by Australians rather than owned by funds in Canada and America.
02:09And that would be incredible just to keep farms local.
