Phil Smith reports from Estadio Algarve as Sunderland fall to a narrow defeat
Transcript
00:00Hello from the Stadio Elgarve where Sunderland had just been beaten, sorry, one deal by Sport and Elizabeth in the second and final friendly of their trip out here.
00:09I have to say it's not really a scoreline that tells the story of the game.
00:12Sunderland again fielded that kind of strong experience side in the first half and they were excellent.
00:17Sport and Elizabeth scored against the run of play, a long ball over the top.
00:20Sunderland caught a little bit of sleep, maybe a hint of offside and a poo a little bit of goalkeeping where the goalkeeper was kind of stranded, shouldn't have come and gathered it.
00:28Sport and Elizabeth scored.
00:30Otherwise, Sunderland did most of the run in the half.
00:32They were disciplined by the name to be defensively but broke well, had a lot of good chances.
00:36Eliza may end the fire just wide after a wonderful team move.
00:39Khabib Diarra had a injury with a save from the goalkeeper after a nice bit of play.
00:43Some real standout performances.
00:44The end of the sale was excellent.
00:46I really think it's given Rajiv some great Sunderland to think about in and out of the possession.
00:49So strong, such a good decision making.
00:51And as you'd expect, it ends on a fair top draw just at the heart of everything that Sunderland did.
00:55Shouldn't really have got it at half-time behind, so some positives there.
00:58In the second half, yeah, Sport and Elizabeth dominated the ball and were the better side.
01:02But you'd expect that.
01:03They pretty much stayed with their strongest team in the second half.
01:05Some of them had that younger and experienced side out in special defence.
01:08They were pretty resolute.
01:10Yes, they lacked quality in the final third and there would be a few players frustrated without them.
01:13But generally speaking, they kept their shape while they were organised.
01:16And they limited the opposition to few chances.
01:19So, although it's a defeat, I think Regine St-Priest would be pretty happy with a lot of what you saw out there.
01:23A good run out for me and a good game to end the trip.
01:27So, a narrow defeat for Sunderland, but for me a lot of positives to take.
01:31A lot of work to do in the transit market.
01:33It's clearly that the depth isn't there yet and that's massive.
01:36But I think there's a lot of good things happening with this team and a platform to build on me.
01:40Thank you very much.
