Israel launched a new ground and air offensive in central Gaza on Monday, pushing into Deir Al Balah with tanks and continued airstrikes following heavy bombardments overnight.
Transcript
00:00The Secretary-General is appalled by the accelerating breakdown of humanitarian conditions in Gaza,
00:05where the last lifelines keeping people alive are collapsing.
00:10He deplores the growing reports of children and adults suffering from malnutrition.
00:15The Secretary-General strongly condemns the ongoing violence, including the shooting,
00:19the killing, and the injuring of people attempting to get food for their families.
00:24Civilians must be protected, civilians must be respected, and they must never, ever be targeted.
00:31The population in Gaza remains gravely undersupplied with the basic necessities of life.
00:38Israel has the obligation to allow and facilitate, by all means at its disposal,
00:43the humanitarian relief provided by the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations.
00:48The Secretary-General notes that the intensification of hostilities in recent days
00:53comes as the humanitarian system is being impeded, undermined, and endangered.
00:59A new evacuation order in parts of Daryl Bala, homes for tens of thousands,
01:04pushes people into more desperate conditions and further displacement,
01:07and restricts our ability to deliver life-saving aid.
01:11As I mentioned, UN staff is remaining in Daryl Bala,
01:14and two UN guest houses have been impacted,
01:19despite the parties having been informed of the location of UN premises,
01:23which, as you well know, are inviolable.
01:25These locations, as with all civilian sites, must be protected, regardless of evacuation orders.
01:31The Secretary-General reiterates his urgent call for the protection of civilians,
01:36including humanitarian personnel,
01:37and the provision of essential resources to ensure their survival.
01:41He once again calls on the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
01:46We stand ready to significantly scale up our humanitarian operations.
01:51The time for a ceasefire is now.
