00:00a florida woman is accused of killing her boyfriend sarah boone sarah boone went to bed
00:23while her boyfriend was trapped inside of a suitcase you zipped him in there yes thought
00:28he would be funny a little it was we both were laughing about it and then i fell asleep we
00:32don't respond to a lot of incidents that happen involving a suitcase i thought it was very strange
00:38two grown adults playing hide and seek and then one of them ends up dead sarah i can't breathe
00:44nice on you sarah i can't breathe he's begging for his life and and telling her he can't breathe
00:53sarah why she would have videotaped it you know is beyond my comprehension it appeared that her
01:03only possible defense would be battered women syndrome
01:07if he would have gotten out of the suitcase
01:11what would he have done to you he probably would have made me unrecognizable
01:16or i would have uh lost my life there is no doubt that sarah boone is the newton
01:23she was justified and the action she took provided self-defense
01:29this is what he's going to tell you i'm going to have a kid out of that situation
01:41and i grabbed the gun trying to find the first place to put a body no sir the only thing they
01:46could do was kill him you want to sell you anything leave the jury and you find the defendant
01:509-1-1 what is the location of your emergency
02:074748 france court apartment 3
02:10this is a police or medical
02:12my boyfriend is dead
02:15the caller was 42 year old sarah boone reporting the death of her boyfriend for the last three years
02:24george torres
02:25now tell me exactly what happened there
02:27uh my boyfriend only were playing last night and
02:31i put him in a suitcase when we were playing
02:34and like kind of hide in seat kind of thing so
02:37i fell asleep and i woke up and he was dead in the suitcase so i don't know what happened
02:43they rolled the emergency services to that address
02:53they walked in and found george on the ground next to the open suitcase
02:59there was nothing that could be done at that point
03:02he was declared deceased
03:05when i responded sarah was outside of her apartment
03:11all right sarah my name is chelsea my partner scott
03:15we don't respond to a lot of incidents that happen involving a suitcase and i was eager to to hear what unfolded
03:23he was playing the hiding ghost yes and at some point you put him in the
03:29no he got in the suitcase so he thought it would be funny to be put in the suitcase
03:33so i was like okay well i'm gonna joke with you and i'll dip you up and make him you know
03:37squirm a little bit whatever it is but then i fell asleep
03:41i fell asleep where was the suitcase right where it is right down there yes you zipped him in there
03:46yes thought he would be funny a little it was we both were laughing about it and then i fell asleep
03:51where did you fall asleep at upstairs in your bedroom yes okay totally forgetting that he was
03:56in the suitcase still okay and then you came back downstairs this morning or this afternoon yes when
04:02i got up what time 12 30 ish i was awake but i totally forgot that he was in the suitcase
04:10i thought it was very strange two agro-grown adults no children in sight playing hide and seek
04:17and then one of them ends up dead i was like i forgot he was in the suitcase and he wasn't moving
04:23nothing was happening so i unzipped him unzipped him took him out and started doing cpr on him
04:30it was a fairly large suitcase one of the zippers uh was actually damaged the pull on the zipper was
04:38missing if you're on the inside of a suitcase i don't see it being so easy to open that up george
04:45was not a very big person in stature he was uh i believe like five four in height he was folded up
04:53uh kind of in a futile position is how i imagined it uh when it was explained to me and he obviously
05:02being confined in that space it was very difficult for him to breathe or even move
05:08okay sarah's ex-husband uh brian boone was on scene and when we interviewed him
05:17uh that's the first time that we really started to get kind of a an idea of the relationship that
05:24uh sarah and george were in they've got a whole ton of history oh really oh you guys
05:31just call them for the two of them yeah he's been recently on parole because of it so
05:40because of domestic violence with her yes okay we looked it up i i believe we found uh about 14
05:48previous calls for service over the prior year to that address
05:56sheriff's office you're in there come on out the detectives discovered body cam video from the
06:00most recent incident when george was taken into custody whoa hey show us your hands come out with
06:08your hands up george step out with your hands up put your hands in the put your hands behind your head
06:14george was arrested several times for domestic battery uh sarah was arrested a couple of times
06:23i took it to be a mutually combative relationship i was taken aback um as far as why george would
06:32crawl into a suitcase they had just finished fighting the night before
06:39where i believe he flung her down the steps the couple was notorious for their drunken fights
06:45according to the apartment maintenance supervisor he worked but she was supported by her ex-husband
06:53the heart of the issue was the fact that they just enjoyed drinking to the point that
07:01they got very physical and disrespectful to each other george ended up going to anger management and i
07:06would give him the advice walk away because your problem is one of you is going to jail and the
07:12other one's going to be dead but sarah told detectives she and george had not been drinking
07:17that much while playing hide and seek um the only thing like i said i don't know if alcohol had to do
07:23with that but we had a bottle of wine she had been claiming that you know they had drank a little bit
07:29but they weren't drunk they were not intoxicated um we questioned her on that and she was adamant that
07:36they were not so in my eyes i'm trying to corroborate her story um you know see if what she's telling
07:42me is adding up are you okay with us going in the house and looking at things okay so i kind of
07:47explained it to her we would like to go through your phone you know and these are the reasons why
07:52she gave us consent and i had her sign a consent form i took it to be okay well she doesn't have
08:00anything to hide on the phone um she voluntarily gave the phone up but as the detectives began to
08:07look at the download of sarah's phone there was a video of the suitcase we did look at each other and
08:14went oh wow and they could hear the voice of george zipped up inside the suitcase with sarah talking back
08:26to him for everything you've done to me for everything you've done to me so you
08:40flat out telling her i can't breathe in here and she was very dismissive of it uh cussed at him used uh
08:48uh profanities to get her uh feelings across sarah stupid sarah it's my name don't wear it up
09:02sarah i can't breathe babe sarah is he yeah that's when you do any trick me sarah
09:09he's begging for his life and and telling her he can't breathe sarah i can't breathe and you know
09:19trying to get help and she's blatantly just aggressively continuing to just yell at him and
09:29just treat him like like dirt sarah i can't breathe that's on you sarah i can't breathe it's on you sarah
09:42we're hearing her speech in the video and she was obviously intoxicated highly intoxicated in the video
09:51real real ransom i might want to get video for it extra
09:59because i got this sarah
10:02real around
10:07i can't breathe oh that's what i feel like when he's drinking on me sarah
10:13i can't breathe sarah yeah you should probably shut the up
10:25at that point i was definitely not thinking this was just uh an accident a second video was taken
10:32about 11 minutes later showing the suitcase in a different position it had been turned it was moved
10:40so it was laying on the other side why she was moving around i don't know and in my opinion when she
10:49turned that phone off she deliberately left him in the suitcase and went back and there was only one
10:56one person who could explain why
11:12appreciate you coming in yes ma'am so i'm going to read you your rights again
11:18the detective's game plan was to at first hold back confronting sarah about the videos
11:24they found on her phone i was like uh you know just trying to kind of downplay it in a sense because
11:30i don't want to spook her too much i still want her to be cooperative with me and they started with
11:35the autopsy report that found george had essentially suffocated positional asphyxia
11:41but also the report identified several injuries to his body so this morning we went to his autopsy
11:47um and we were informed of some injuries that he had by the doctor so i want her um so he's got
12:02scratch marks to his back i know that's not okay and um it's called a contusion so he had some injuries to
12:12his left shoulder um he had um he had cut near his like lip we could see we could see um his mouth
12:22was a little i haven't laid the handle on him okay i also too i he fell off my son's bike okay so i don't
12:30know and he's notorious for running into the wall or the halter so why okay what about the scratches
12:38is there's also sex yes and they're all recent like if they they they occurred recently it wasn't
12:47something that occurred post or that occurred a week ago or two days ago three days ago they
12:52definitely occurred you know the night leading up nobody laid a hand on anybody he also had um
12:58um like on the left side of his forehead he had basically bruising um and um on like his head and
13:09skull i had no idea as if something hit him i consider not for him i have not touched him i have not touched
13:17him i have not touched him how would you get those injuries tell me we'll both know i have not touched him
13:25and you know i didn't i didn't want to be aggressive with her or i just wanted to listen but this person
13:33can't give himself these injuries like you're you're lying to me i don't think you will understand he
13:41comes at me all the time he comes at me so it's either i flee or try to go upstairs and go to sleep
13:49that's usually what it is right so what do you mean by he comes after you like he gets
13:56belligerently drunk at one point i started documenting everything okay so when you all see
14:01my phone you can see all of the damage he has done to me and the videos of him smashing my television
14:09because he's belligerently drunk sarah's phone did indeed have videos of george smashing sarah celibate
14:20why are you still with him everybody asks me that when i tell you guys this
14:27i really love him like i do and i feel like i can help him like i feel like i could help him i am a female
14:35so i think that in these type of cases when you have a female suspect i i do think that obviously
14:42we can relate to each other a little more nobody knew george better than i did i say that i knew
14:48george better than himself and i tried in every way shape and form ask everyone i helped him i took care of
15:00him i miss him a lot and i didn't even sleep last night i miss him a lot and that's why you're still
15:11with him even though he's done all these things to you and when i tell you i love him i love them
15:18she just kept painting herself as a victim everything was poor sarah poor sarah this is
15:23being done to sarah i mean is there any chance it got to be too much for you and you couldn't handle
15:28taking care of him and i never stopped wearing them i mean it's unexplainable how he got these
15:34injuries and i have no idea you were the only one with him 100 right hand to god i have no idea how
15:43he got them nobody touched anybody nobody touched anybody you told me on recording like that you were
15:52not drunk he was not drunk you guys were having a good time i don't get i can't get drunk number one
15:59i do not want to get drunk i don't like being non-complacentous having my wits about myself i
16:06don't like feeling out of control she tried to downplay her drinking um and tried to upplay more of
16:14i'm a victim and you know i'm smart i'm educated but detectives have located surveillance videos at a
16:20grocery store showing the two of them buying a large bottle of wine that day you see him on video
16:26there purchased a a magnum bottle of wine and then a few hours later george returned to the store and
16:34bought another bottle of wine have you guys ever played the you said you played hide and seek like
16:39probably three times in your relationship when you have played have you ever zipped him up in a suitcase
16:45prior no and i understand you know you're claiming that sunday it was a joking matter you were laughing
16:51he was laughing but what i'm just asking is in the past like is it something that you guys normally do
16:56absolutely not and now one more question before the detectives confronted sarah with the phone videos
17:04okay so do you remember making any videos or maybe having any cover anything any photos videos that you
17:13remember doing on your phone on sunday no she was about to find out the detectives knew otherwise
17:31okay um so i have something that i want to show you that we found um and it was from your phone
17:43it was about 38 minutes into the interrogation we hadn't told her that we found the videos
17:50we wanted to see her reaction if you need to move the ground go ahead
18:03no i don't remember that for everything you've done to me for everything you've done to me
18:08your battery's not bad unfortunately my laptop died on us detective capsule just very calm very
18:21collected uh went got a cord came back in got it going again you guys are scaring me sorry we just want
18:29you to watch this this came from your phone don't you want to know what's on it yes please
18:38is it long because i don't know how much i can take
18:45i don't know how much i can take do i have to watch this
18:50i continuously throw up i don't sleep i don't want to see it that's okay
18:54okay well it's on your phone and you can either explain it or we take it for what it is
19:03yeah we're just trying to give you the opportunity to tell us what's going on that's it
19:07it's that long two minutes for everything you've got to me for everything you've got to me
19:22i don't want to watch it please
19:27she didn't want to see it uh we were playing the video for her she didn't want to watch it she
19:32didn't want to see it we needed her to see it guys this is killing me right now i continue to
19:38play them in the background as we continue to talk because i thought that that was important for her
19:44to hear those things he's begging to let for you to let him out you sound you're laughing in the
19:52beginning and then in the end it sounds kind of like a no it's not malicious my intention was not
19:58to leave him in there please understand that my intention was not to leave him in there but you
20:06went upstairs thinking that he could get himself out but the video shows so it goes from funny to
20:12no longer funny but you're the only one laughing but i didn't think that he was like panicky like i
20:21didn't i still pushing up on a suitcase saying sarah sarah sarah i can't breathe but nowhere in there
20:30is he laughing is he joking he is begging and you're the only one laughing okay and you're the only one
20:38saying derogatory comments like you're mad no please don't i don't need to sound negative and i don't know
20:48if i can't say this but like it's like you guys are kind of trying to like feed me like no i'm just
20:53trying to show you a video that you no longer want to watch because you probably don't want
20:56to know the outcome of how and what you said well i know what you know you know what's on that video
21:02now no you remember making that video oh why don't you remember making the video probably because
21:08we have been drinking but you weren't drunk because you're drunk doesn't mean that you
21:12you were not drunk in my experience if somebody cannot remember doing something to the extent of
21:19making two videos and a video and taking a photo they are intoxicated okay i understand where you all
21:27are coming from the video is very portraying of the opposite of what you told us it is the injuries
21:37are not consistent with what you told us so we have a lot of inconsistencies and this video
21:45explained itself it really truly does you don't think that i have thought about the video or thought
21:53about no again if you don't mind please so you all are assuming that it's like oh good i got him in
22:01there now i'm gonna go to sleep is that what you all are assuming well it's not an assumption when
22:05that's what you told us so that happened that's what happened i wasn't following her line and
22:11wasn't treating her as as the victim because this was not in any way shape or form hand on the bible
22:19intentional okay so you just i didn't kill him you left him there to teach him a lesson i didn't mean
22:26to leave him there that's what i'm trying to tell you you got them walked away how is that not
22:31intentionally leaving him there you're punishing him no just well that's what you're saying in the video
22:39this is what you got this is what you make me feel like see and then it's all backfired on me
22:45like it's all backfired on me and i understand the severity of this i just it's awful i know okay
22:53she confessed to an extent i was looking for the intent um and i was just looking for
23:00a more plausible explanation i'm not admitting anything about being intentional and i killed george
23:09that's not the situation but it's trying to depend on me
23:18that was not my intent
23:22but it's trying to be pinned on me at some point you have to you have to end it and know okay you
23:28know she's not going to give you what you want at that point i had enough of her we secured her
23:43uh she was taken to jail why is this happening because george is dead
23:49you killed him and you know he suffered immensely and you know so no you're going you're going to
24:04jail for this but it would take four years before the case went to trial and by then sarah boone and
24:11her lawyer had come up with a legal defense that she thought would help her beat the charge of murder
24:23welcome to the law crime network sarah boone is facing second degree murder charges
24:29our attorneys claim she acted in self-defense in terms of a murder weapon there was no gun or knife it was
24:35a suitcase and that's not something you see in every case a florida woman is accused of killing
24:40her boyfriend after leaving him in a suitcase and sarah boone became known as the suitcase killer
24:47welcome in to another episode here on sarah boone sarah boone sarah boone went to bed
24:54while her boyfriend was trapped inside of a suitcase the trial was delayed for four years by
24:59covid hurricanes and sarah's unhappiness with her lawyers i was the sixth attorney that she had as
25:08what's called court appointed or registry attorney frank bankowitz had worked out a deal for sarah
25:13who was facing a possible life sentence for her to plead to a lesser count of manslaughter and be out
25:19of prison in seven years given all the circumstances it was an excellent resolution but she would not
25:26accept it just flat out refused it it appeared that her only possible defense would be battered women
25:34syndrome miss boone had been very badly injured on a number of occasions it's definitely a recognized
25:44you know psychological syndrome it was the only shot but then after almost a year sarah boone told the
25:51court she wanted to fire bankowitz too as her lawyer she called me a buffoon i think and a uh there were
25:59several several other not very nice comments she wasn't happy with me that's for sure very very demanding
26:08she ran the show
26:14by the time the trial started boone had fired two more lawyers and was now represented by a ninth lawyer
26:21with the plea deal still on the table ma'am understanding the state's offer do you wish to
26:26accept or reject the state's offer to resolve this case okay mr jay you may proceed sir thank you
26:34ladies and gentlemen what the evidence this case is going to show you that this defendant
26:40zipped for me large or as shot in a suitcase if she did this with the malicious intent
26:49the evidence to punish him
26:54and then she went up to sleep and left him to take his final breaths on this earth alone
27:02the defendant killed mr torres
27:09as she decided he deserved not because the evidence will show an objective
27:15these will burst in her circumstances you do thank you mr jay any opening remarks by the defense
27:26boone's new lawyer james owens also decided to go with the battered women's syndrome defense
27:32because sarah boone and george torres we're down and out
27:38as you can be
27:41their life centered around alcohol and you're going to learn with all that
27:48with domestic violence
27:49and that George
27:52Torrance
27:53physically abused
27:56Sarah Boone.
27:58Sarah Boone will take the stand.
28:00She will
28:01explain what happened.
28:05She will explain
28:06why it happened.
28:08The evidence will show
28:10that she was justified
28:11in the action she took
28:14to prevent
28:16the attack
28:18of George Torrance.
28:19Which the law acknowledges
28:23that every one of us
28:25has the right to win broke.
28:27The right of self-defense.
28:33First thing the prosecution
28:34wanted the jury to see
28:36was the suitcase.
28:37We wanted the jury
28:39to be able to
28:40see how the zippers
28:42looked on the suitcase.
28:45Whether or not George Torres
28:46could indeed open that suitcase
28:48from inside.
28:51How easy is it
28:52to operate the zipper
28:55that closes the suitcase?
28:57It was a little difficult.
29:04Good afternoon.
29:05Could you state and spell your name
29:07for the record for us?
29:08Yes.
29:09It's Chelsea Kepsel.
29:10Lead detective Chelsea Kepsel
29:12conducted the two-hour interrogation
29:14of Sarah Boone.
29:15And do you see the person
29:17today here in court
29:18who admitted
29:19going to bed
29:21while George Torres
29:23continued to suffer
29:24in the suitcase?
29:26Yes, I do.
29:27Could you please identify
29:28that person
29:29by an article
29:31of clothing
29:31they're wearing?
29:33Yes.
29:34She's at the defense table
29:35in black
29:37and I guess
29:38a pinkish top.
29:39top.
29:41And then
29:42the prosecution
29:43played the entirety
29:44of the two phone videos
29:46that Sarah had taken
29:48of George in the suitcase.
29:49Sarah, I can't breathe.
29:51That's on you.
29:53The video
29:54is very chilling.
29:56It was a powerful moment
29:57to see
29:59the circumstances
30:01of George Torres
30:03and how he
30:05was murdered.
30:06Sarah,
30:07it was tough
30:11to watch.
30:12Yeah,
30:12why
30:13she would have
30:14videotaped it
30:15is
30:16beyond
30:19my comprehension.
30:22It set the stage
30:23for Sarah Boone
30:24to tell
30:24her side
30:25of the story.
30:35Hi, ma'am.
30:36You can take a seat.
30:37And if you could,
30:38state and spell
30:39your name
30:39for the record
30:40for us.
30:41Sarah Boone.
30:42Are you a little bit nervous?
30:44A little bit.
30:45How did you
30:45and George
30:46get along
30:47when y'all first met?
30:49Very well.
30:50It was
30:51strange
30:56how quickly
30:57we hit things off
30:58and had so much
30:59in common.
30:59Is there times
31:00when he would get
31:02to a state
31:03of intoxication
31:04where he would get
31:04violent against you?
31:06Quite often.
31:08Were those injuries
31:08to your arm?
31:10Yes.
31:12Did they call
31:12George Gordon?
31:14Yes.
31:17Did he willingly
31:18get in the suitcase?
31:19He was already in there.
31:20All right.
31:21Tell us what happened.
31:22I mean,
31:26I just kind of
31:27I zipped him up.
31:28We thought it was funny
31:29and were joking
31:31about how he was
31:33small enough
31:34to fit inside
31:35of the suitcase.
31:37That's when I
31:38went over
31:39and decided
31:40to
31:40videotape
31:42to
31:42just see the
31:46I guess
31:49the
31:49jest in it
31:51for
31:51him to
31:53understand
31:53that
31:54right now
31:55I feel safe
31:56and right now
31:56I have the ability
31:57to actually
31:58speak to you
31:59in a manner
32:01that normally
32:02I would not have
32:03the ability to
32:04do.
32:05I mean,
32:05you were intoxicated
32:06Yes.
32:08And
32:08you would agree
32:09that
32:10you said
32:12some things
32:12you shouldn't
32:13on him.
32:14Yes.
32:14But
32:15would it be
32:16fair to say
32:17that
32:18you had some
32:20anger
32:21at that point?
32:22I did.
32:23And did
32:23you want him
32:25to feel
32:25some uncomfort?
32:28I did.
32:29I think
32:30that she could
32:30have been
32:31prepped
32:31better
32:32to curb
32:33her
32:33feelings
32:35and her
32:36attitude
32:36and
32:38attitude
32:39to a jury
32:40means a lot.
32:42And
32:42my fear
32:44was that
32:44he was going
32:45to break
32:45out of the
32:46suitcase
32:46knowing that
32:47it was
32:47a broken
32:47suitcase
32:48and
32:50his hands
32:52started to
32:53come through
32:53his
32:54hands
32:55started to
32:55come through
32:55this way.
32:56Was he
32:56trying to
32:57get out?
32:58Forcefully,
32:59yes.
32:59Was he
33:00angry at
33:00you?
33:02Yes.
33:03Were you
33:03in fear?
33:05Always.
33:07If he
33:08would have
33:08gotten out
33:08of the
33:08suitcase,
33:09what would
33:11he have
33:11done to
33:12you?
33:13Like he
33:14used to
33:14tell me,
33:15he probably
33:15would have
33:15made me
33:16unrecognizable
33:17or I
33:17would have
33:18lost my
33:19life.
33:20And then
33:21Sarah Boone
33:22admitted
33:22something she
33:23had repeatedly
33:24denied to
33:25detect.
33:25And so
33:25what did
33:26you do?
33:27For the
33:28split-second
33:28reaction that
33:29I had,
33:29I happened
33:30to see
33:31that and
33:31I grabbed
33:32the
33:32baseball
33:33bat and
33:33was trying
33:35to poke
33:35his hand
33:36to go
33:36back in
33:36to please
33:37don't go,
33:38don't break
33:38through,
33:39please.
33:39So I
33:40hit his
33:40hand.
33:42And then
33:42the barrel
33:43of the bat,
33:44the big part
33:44of the bat
33:45is here.
33:46Correct.
33:46And he
33:47rusted it
33:48into the
33:50different areas
33:51of the
33:51suitcase.
33:52I started
33:53with his
33:53hand and
33:54his hand
33:54he was
33:54still trying
33:55to get
33:55out.
33:56So in
33:56your mind
33:57did you
33:57prevent
33:57him from
33:58attacking you?
33:58Absolutely.
34:00Split-second
34:01decision.
34:01After you
34:02hit him
34:02with the
34:03bat,
34:03was he
34:03not trying
34:04to get
34:04out anymore?
34:05No.
34:05Just very
34:06self-centered.
34:07Her only
34:07concern was
34:08for her.
34:10Did you
34:11ever believe
34:11he could
34:11die in
34:12there?
34:13No.
34:14At all.
34:15Were you
34:16trying to
34:16kill him?
34:18Never.
34:19As long
34:20as he was
34:20in the
34:21suitcase,
34:21he couldn't
34:22harm you?
34:24Correct.
34:25Let me
34:25spin.
34:27Tell the
34:28jury why
34:28you lied
34:28to the
34:29police.
34:32I lied
34:33to the
34:33police.
34:37Basically
34:38everyone
34:38because I
34:40was
34:40extremely
34:42fearful
34:42of being
34:43arrested.
34:45Are you
34:45telling the
34:46truth today?
34:47I am.
34:48Did you
34:48love
34:49George?
34:50I do
34:51to this
34:51day.
34:54I apologize.
34:55Any cross
34:55examination?
34:57The
34:57prosecutor
34:58had Sarah
34:59Boone
34:59demonstrate
34:59how she
35:00zipped
35:00George
35:01into the
35:01suitcase.
35:02It is
35:03kind of
35:04chilling
35:04to see
35:05her
35:05manipulating
35:06that
35:07suitcase
35:07knowing
35:07that
35:07George
35:08Torres
35:08died
35:09there.
35:10How
35:10did he
35:10express his
35:11anger with
35:12you?
35:13He told me
35:14that I was
35:14going to
35:14die.
35:15Okay.
35:16Now this
35:17is happening
35:18after he's
35:18already told
35:19you several
35:19times he
35:20cannot breathe
35:20in the
35:21suitcase,
35:21correct?
35:22Correct.
35:23And you're
35:24filming,
35:24your purpose
35:25of filming
35:26is to kind
35:27of teach
35:28him a
35:28lesson.
35:28This is
35:29your chance
35:29to say
35:30something to
35:30him when
35:30he can't
35:31say anything
35:31back to
35:32you,
35:32correct?
35:34No.
35:35Correct me.
35:36There was
35:38no lesson
35:39to be
35:40learned.
35:40It was
35:40just I
35:41wanted him
35:42to try
35:44to understand
35:46how I
35:46felt so
35:47maybe he
35:48could progress
35:49in being a
35:50better person
35:51the next
35:51day.
35:53So you
35:55wanted him
35:55to understand
35:56how you
35:56felt in
35:57the past
35:57and that's
35:58not teaching
35:58a lesson?
36:00I just
36:01wanted him
36:01to understand.
36:02Okay.
36:03Was he
36:03still asking
36:04for you
36:05and calling
36:05your name?
36:06Not that I
36:07can recall.
36:08Did you do
36:08anything to
36:09help him
36:09escape from
36:10the predicament
36:11that you
36:11zipped him
36:12up in?
36:14No.
36:15No,
36:16good question.
36:18I think
36:18she came
36:19across as
36:19vengeful.
36:21I just
36:22didn't think
36:22it played
36:23well with
36:23the jury.
36:33this is a
36:35box.
36:39This is
36:41the box
36:42where
36:44George
36:44Torres
36:45was killed.
36:47George
36:47Torres
36:48took his
36:50last
36:51panicked
36:52breaths
36:53in this
36:57box.
36:58Sometimes
36:59when people
37:00hear,
37:00oh,
37:01this person
37:01died in a
37:02suitcase,
37:02it can be
37:03kind of
37:04trivializing.
37:05And there
37:05was nothing
37:06trivial about
37:07this case,
37:08so I wanted
37:09to reframe
37:09it for them
37:10that this
37:12could be
37:13any person
37:14trapped in
37:14a box.
37:15George
37:15Torres
37:16was murdered
37:18in this
37:20box.
37:22Ladies and
37:22gentlemen,
37:23in a few
37:24moments,
37:25Mr.
37:26Owings will
37:26rise.
37:27He's going
37:27to talk to
37:28you about
37:30what an
37:31awful,
37:32awful
37:33boyfriend
37:34George
37:35Torres
37:35was.
37:38Battered
37:38Spouse is
37:39not some
37:39carte blanche.
37:41Battered
37:41Spouse is
37:42not a
37:44license to
37:45kill.
37:47The fact
37:47that George
37:49Torres
37:49at points
37:55mistreated
37:57Sarah
37:57Boone
37:58doesn't
37:59mean that
37:59she walks
38:00around
38:01with an
38:03ace in
38:04her pocket
38:05when it
38:06comes to
38:07George
38:08Torres.
38:10Ladies and
38:10gentlemen,
38:11I'm confident
38:12that you are
38:13going to come
38:14back with
38:15the old
38:16lawful
38:16burden,
38:17guilty as
38:18charged,
38:19second free
38:19burden.
38:22Mr.
38:22Owings,
38:22you may
38:22proceed,
38:23sir.
38:23Yes,
38:24sir.
38:27There is
38:28no doubt
38:28that Sarah
38:30Boone
38:30is a
38:31victim.
38:36That Sarah
38:37Boone
38:37has been
38:39traumatized.
38:45That Sarah
38:46Boone is
38:47still
38:47traumatized.
38:49and the
38:52reason for
38:53the trauma
38:53is George
38:55Torres.
38:57Sarah
38:57Boone
38:58didn't know
38:59that he
39:00could die
39:00again.
39:01And as
39:01naive as
39:02that sounds,
39:04as naive as
39:05that sounds,
39:07she didn't
39:07appreciate the
39:08danger.
39:11I mean,
39:12is that the
39:12way you want
39:12to kill
39:13somebody?
39:13Is that the
39:14way you're
39:14going to do
39:15it?
39:15The law
39:17empowers an
39:17individual to
39:18defend their
39:18life and
39:19safety when
39:20faced with a
39:20threat and
39:21to prevent
39:22an attack.
39:23That's what
39:23they're doing
39:24good.
39:25We ask
39:25that you do
39:26justice in
39:26this case and
39:28find her not
39:29guilty because
39:29the doubt is
39:30reasonable.
39:32Give Sarah
39:32Boone some
39:33hope for a
39:35better life.
39:36And free
39:37them.
39:38They went
39:44to the jury
39:44room,
39:45deliberated
39:46basically over
39:47dinner, and
39:49after dinner
39:49they came
39:50out with
39:50their
39:50decision.
39:51Madam
39:52Clerk, if
39:52you could
39:53please publish
39:54the verdict.
39:55The jury
39:55was back
39:56with a
39:56verdict in
39:57less than
39:57two hours.
39:59In the
40:00circuit court
40:00of the
40:0119th Circuit
40:01and in
40:02Orange County
40:03Florida,
40:04in the
40:04State of
40:04Water
40:05versus
40:05Sarah Boone.
40:06She just
40:22sat there,
40:23very stoic,
40:25didn't cry,
40:26didn't move,
40:27no tears.
40:36My son
40:40is not
40:43here no
40:44more.
40:46She
40:46only
40:47killed
40:47my son,
40:48she killed
40:49a father,
40:50a brother,
40:52an uncle.
40:55He loved
40:55my son,
40:56I love
40:57him.
40:58He wasn't
40:59perfect,
41:00but he
41:00wasn't
41:01a good
41:01son.
41:02Thank
41:08you.
41:13Judge,
41:14I would
41:14like to
41:14call Sarah
41:15Boone.
41:15You may
41:16proceed.
41:21I
41:21forgive
41:21George for
41:22beating me
41:23senseless,
41:24for causing
41:25me so much
41:25trauma and
41:26pain mentally,
41:27physically,
41:27emotionally,
41:28for destroying
41:29my reputation
41:30and integrity,
41:31from I am
41:32for murderer
41:32scarlet letter.
41:34Again,
41:35it's herself.
41:37It's her,
41:39not the fact
41:40that this
41:41person died.
41:42I forgive
41:42myself for
41:43falling in
41:44love with
41:44a monster,
41:45and no
41:45matter how
41:46grotesque
41:46he may
41:47become,
41:48I still
41:49loved him,
41:49hoped,
41:50and forgave.
41:51Forgive
41:51me,
41:51George.
41:52Forgive
41:53me,
41:53Taurus family.
41:55Forgive
41:55me,
41:55Judge
41:55Kranick.
41:56To the
41:57entire
41:57planet,
41:58please forgive
41:58me.
41:59Second
42:00degree
42:01murder
42:01is a
42:03punishable
42:04by life
42:04felony.
42:05We
42:05asked for
42:06a life
42:06sentence.
42:12Court
42:12pronounces
42:13sentence as
42:13follows.
42:18Ms. Boone,
42:19what sentences
42:19you?
42:21The life
42:22in the
42:23Department of
42:23Corrections.
42:24I think she
42:25was surprised
42:26at the sentence.
42:27Life means
42:27life.
42:28You walk
42:29in and you
42:29come out
42:30in a
42:30pine box.
42:31It's
42:31unimaginable
42:32that someone
42:33could do
42:33that to
42:34someone else.
42:35You will
42:35now be
42:35remanded
42:36into the
42:36custody of
42:37the Orange
42:37County Jail
42:37to transfer
42:38you to
42:38the Department
42:39of Corrections,
42:40and I wish
42:40you the best
42:40of luck.
42:42I think
42:42that where
42:43she is
42:43is where
42:44she deserves
42:44to be.
