07:13even going to come back although i think most of us who are from chicago and call chicago home
07:19knew somehow they'd be back i mean jerry reinstorf the majority owner would have to leave town if
07:27they didn't come back you can't argue with championship after championship after championship
07:32they were still the best team in the nba you have scotty pippen an incredibly talented athlete
07:39very skilled scorer his mental sharpness and his court awareness and his basketball savvy
07:45made him the greatest number two player ever dennis rodman was the defensive presence the rebounder
07:53someone who on a team with big egos didn't need the ball and he never ran out of energy that was the
07:59thing i mean at that point michael jordan's already the ultimate sports alpha man i mean the only
08:07comparisons that i can recall being apt were to babe ruth and muhammad ali that's it that's that's
08:15the list there's nobody else on it michael obviously uh in the wake of this incredible celebration
08:21there'll be some very difficult business decisions we're entitled to defend what we have until we lose
08:28it if we lose it then you look at it and you say okay let's change let's just go through a rebuilding
08:35the ones guaranteeing rebuilding it's going to be two or three four or five years cubs have been
08:41rebuilding for 42 years if you want to look at this from a business thing have a sense of respect for
08:52the people who have laid the groundworks so that you can be a profitable organization
09:05so
09:11so
09:13so
09:19We have just finished winning our fifth title.
09:41It's a lot of uncertainty, their management started talking about the franchise is going
09:51to change or we're going to rebuild.
09:53I thought it was unfair.
09:56I would never let someone who's not putting on a uniform and playing each and every day
10:03dictate what we do on the basketball court.
10:09So my mentality was, let's put things aside from a business sense and focus on that craft.
10:16Let's give them a reason not to think that way.
10:22Michael Jordan waded into the undertone of bitterness on the Bulls when asked what the
10:26Bulls' biggest challenge would be this year.
10:32Michael glancing up at the office of GM Jerry Kraus.
10:39Jerry Kraus was the general manager of the Bulls and he was certainly at the root of what
10:45made the tension of that season so severe.
10:52Jerry Kraus was a scout for the White Sox.
10:55He was there when I bought the White Sox in 1981.
10:58And after I bought the Bulls, he came to see me, said he'd like to be the general manager
11:04of the Bulls.
11:05And he said, we can get started.
11:06I asked around the league and everybody I talked to said, don't touch the guy.
11:11Yeah, he had a way of alienating people.
11:14But I wasn't hiring somebody to win a personality contest.
11:18I wanted somebody who truly believed in building a team the way I wanted to and Kraus was the
11:23guy.
11:24To his credit, he did his job, but Jerry had the little man problem.
11:33He grew up a little fat kid, not a lot of money, he was always the underdog.
11:38And he just couldn't control that part of him that needed credit.
11:47All the attention is going to Michael and Scotty and Dennis and Bill.
11:52And Kraus was growing resentful about this.
11:56He was good, but he wasn't good enough to do it without Michael Jordan.
12:00You could argue that Michael Jordan was as good at his job as anyone has ever been at
12:03their job ever in anything.
12:06And Kraus wants to make the point, you know, organizations win championships, not players.
12:11Jerry Kraus, the Bulls general manager, says, quote, organizations win titles, not players,
12:16end quote.
12:17Funny thing, I've never seen him post up and hit a short jump shot.
12:20This quote that was attributed to you, well, as you know, David, there was a misquote.
12:24What I said was that players and coaches alone don't win championships that organizations
12:29do.
12:30I do sincerely believe that organizations as a whole win.
12:33One part of it can't win alone.
12:34The guy left the word alone out of there.
12:36Right.
12:37And he admitted it later on.
12:38Oh, yeah.
12:39I left the word up.
12:40Well, you dumb son of a bitch.
12:41That's not going to kill the quote.
12:45It sounded like he was making a very specific point to a very specific person.
12:51We know the team is much bigger than 15 players.
12:55Those guys who work in the front office, they were good people.
12:58But the most important part of the process is the players.
13:04So for him to say that is offensive to the way that I approach the game.
13:10Kraus was picked on an awful lot during this by Michael and Scottie.
13:14I mean, they made fun of him.
13:16They mocked him.
13:17They mocked him openly.
13:26Was Jerry Kraus a bad guy?
13:28No.
13:29He was a good guy.
13:30He was fun.
13:31If you saw him interact with your kids and saw him, you knew he was a good man.
13:35Jerry Kraus was one of the nicest, kindest, sweetest men I've ever known.
13:40But sometimes he would love people who really didn't love him back.
13:45And it would disappoint him.
13:47Did he love Phil?
13:49Well, he loved Phil in the beginning.
13:51But then, you know, they developed a tension between the two of them.
13:55Phil, from a contract standpoint, wanted to be compensated like the other coaches that he had beaten.
14:03And Jerry wasn't going to do that.
14:06In Jerry's mind, you move pieces in and out.
14:09He didn't move Michael Jordan pieces.
14:11Phil Jackson?
14:12Yeah, you can move him in and out.
14:13And he was wrong about that.
14:16I said from day one, if Phil's not coaching, I'm not going to be a part of rebuilding.
14:21Phil should be the head coach.
14:23And I shouldn't be put in a position to have to make a choice to play for another coach other than Phil Jackson.
14:30Sadly as it may be, I have choices.
14:32You know, I will not choose to play for another coach.
14:35I think Jerry was looking forward to having a clean slate and going out and, you know, rebuilding.
14:44His relationship with me becomes such a circus.
14:49There was no chance for reconciliation.
14:51All of a sudden there's this guy from Iowa State, Tim Floyd, the head coach.
14:56He goes fishing with Jerry Krause.
14:58They're like, what?
14:59So Krause clearly is grooming the next guy.
15:04He's going to be the next Phil Jackson.
15:08Krause's stepdaughter gets married that summer.
15:11He invites everybody from the team and Tim Floyd and he doesn't invite Phil Jackson, the head coach.
15:20I recall that and I think that was bad form on Jerry's part.
15:24I'm not sure it bothered Phil that much.
15:26If somebody doesn't invite me to a wedding, I'd like to thank him.
15:31It was sad that there was such an acrimonious relationship because Jerry Krause started Phil Jackson's NBA coaching career.
15:38Jerry Krause brought him to Chicago as an assistant coach.
15:42If that hadn't happened, you never would have heard of Phil Jackson.
15:45You know, things evolve.
15:48People evolve.
15:49They don't stay stagnant and static in any position.
15:52And, you know, more than anything else, coaches' salaries went like this and, you know, general managers' salaries might have gone like this.
15:58Do you think Jerry Krause resents that?
16:01I'm not going to speculate on that.
16:04I have a tremendous regard for Phil personally and professionally.
16:08I really like Phil Jackson and I wanted Phil Jackson to come back and coach the team.
16:13And I just thought that the presence of Jerry was counterproductive.
16:18I just thought if Phil and I would sit down and talk, we'd work it out.
16:21And I flew out to Montana.
16:23I offered him the opportunity to come back.
16:26And after weeks of public debate, many would argue that Bulls owner Jerry Reinstorf has finally come to his senses, signing Phil Jackson to a one-year deal to return as coach next season.
16:35Phil is the coach. Jerry is the owner.
16:38Those two needed to talk.
16:39And we got it done and we're very happy to have it done.
16:42This will be Phil's last year as the coach of the Bulls.
16:45That's the conclusion of the year.
16:46We'll look towards the future.
16:47Jerry, who called me to his office and said, this is going to be your last year.
16:52I don't care if you win 82 games in a row.
16:54This is going to be your last year here.
16:55So I said, fine.
16:56And I walked out of the room.
16:57And that was the only words that were exchanged.
17:25Oh, you know, we had.
17:26Oh, thank you very much.
17:29Thank you, Mike.
17:31Who is your friend of yours.
17:32Oh yeah.
17:33A high-tech.
17:34That's right, Michael.
17:35He's very nice.
17:36Very good.
17:38Thank you again.
17:39But that's OK.
17:40I'll give back.
17:41You've got to see.
17:42Best of luck in the bank.
17:45Get part of the bin.
17:48All right.
17:50Smart.
17:51It's all right.
17:53The Bulls,
17:54this glorious season they had a three-peat and they won two more and
17:59they're there in Paris where they were mobbed I mean it's like the Beatles
18:04come to town
18:11Michael was like the pied pipo walking down the Champs-Élysées with I think he
18:17was wearing a beret because he's Michael the NBA champion Chicago Bulls are in
18:26Paris for the McDonald's championship just one man is hogging the attention
18:30Michael Jordan he's bigger than the Pope screams the morning paper and
18:34everybody wants a piece of it
18:47I don't need to be known to know that the biggest basketball player of all the time
18:57who gave us a night what is closest to a god on this poor land Michael
19:02R Jordan
19:03you couldn't make a short list of the most consequential and successful teams
19:23in American sports and leave Michael Jordan and the 90s Bulls out but the Bulls who
19:29immediately preceded the Michael Jordan era could be characterized as mediocre
19:34hi I'm Bob Costas join me and Johnny Kerr for exciting Chicago Bulls basketball
19:47action here on WGN television Channel 9 we weren't very good you know during the
19:54time leading up to Michael the team was you know on a downward keel if you will
20:01they've obviously got some problems the ball club has not been winning back then in Chicago
20:08everyone was a Bears fan Northsiders were Cubs fans Southsiders were Sox fans Blackhawks had fans
20:17gathered throughout but there was no buzz about the Bulls the Bulls were being out drawn at the
20:24Chicago Stadium by an indoor soccer team on the Chicago State basically the state of the team was
20:31you know it was Rodney Dangerfield that didn't get no respect the Bulls were in need of a lot of
20:36reinforcements that there were going to be a contending team and here comes by young Michael Jordan
20:41rimming with charismatic talent when he was in high school Michael was one of the top recruited high
20:49school players in America he decided to play in Chapel Hill for one of the great coaches of all time in
20:55Dean Smith and at the University of North Carolina coach Smith ran a very tight ship he was a
21:03disciplinarian tremendous teacher Michael had a ton of respect for him and he knew he had the best
21:09interest for Michael I think mr. Jordan vision and my vision who is going to help him continue to grow
21:15as a young adult not just basketball but his education because for me then the first part was education
21:22Michael's parents did a tremendous job with him he was a fine young man a very conscientious
21:40student a very good student this is your mom reading aloud a letter home from you dear mom how has
21:49life been treating you fine I hope I am doing just fine I am sending you my account number so that you can
21:58deposit some money in my account I have only $20 left tell everyone I say hello and smile God and I love you
22:07love Michael yes sorry about the phone bill please also send me some stamps is that not a college student
22:18please send me some stamps he was very inconsistent as a freshman but he's one of the most competitive
22:27ones we've ever had in our drills he wanted to get better and then he had the ability to get better
22:33Michael Jordan tells me one day he wants to be the best player to ever played here and I said well you've
22:40got to work harder than you did in high school he said I worked as hard as everybody else I said oh excuse
22:44me I thought you just told me you want to be the best player to ever play here he said I'm gonna show
22:49you nobody will ever work as hard as I work after about two and a half hours of hard practice I'm walking
22:59off the floor like drenched sweat tired and here comes Michael like pushing me back on the floor wanting
23:05to play a little one-on-one what to see where his game was I was better than he was for about two weeks
23:12he wanted to learn he wanted to grow quickly from month to month from game to game he was soaking up
23:24information once he got something and added it to the raw talent that he already had it was really explosive to
23:33And by the time we got to the national championship game he was a great player
23:4344th NCAA division one men's basketball championship the largest crowd ever for a basketball game and electric atmosphere
23:55we were getting out there in front of 60 some thousand people I was young but I had no time to be nervous you have two great teams going against each other who are very well coached both teams were equally matched
24:10Michael has a big key buckets has a big shots
24:17it was about his tightly contested a game is as you could ever want to see and then for the ending to be the way that it was was rather amazing as well
24:32Coach Smith called that timeout we're down one this was where coach Smith was extremely cool
24:49he was drawing up a play for James and he says that you know when you get the ball swing it back swing it around Michael should have a shot
24:58he looked at me say if you get the shot take the shot he gave me the green light
25:03they knew they were going to be focusing on the internal that's where the defense was collapsing our offense shifted to one side the whole defense went to that way
25:21Michael was on the left side the ball was reversed Michael's wide open I caught it in totally rhythm they had no clue that I was going to take that shot
25:32and of course the man who hit the crucial shot down the stretch for North Carolina Michael Jordan those two points proved to be the game winner Michael how did it feel when the ball dropped through the net
25:59I felt really good uh that I did something you know to help out the whole team and maybe win the game and uh I just felt very excited at the time
26:08that turned my name from Mike to Michael Jordan it gave me the confidence that I needed to start to excel at the game of basketball
26:17I'm just a freshman on the block and I enjoyed my freshman year
26:26and I hope in the next three years that I'm here that we can win at least two or three more
26:38what Michael really did was improve considerably between his freshman and sophomore year
26:47now Carolina turns it over Dawkins trying to run past Kelly
26:50oh look at Michael Jordan cover ground oh just get out there I think he hit his head on the backboard
26:55I heard a little bang and that's how high that young man got up he hit the back of his head
26:59I can't pick one moment and when I think of Michael Jordan yes I think of the shot
27:04but I think of three years of watching that youngster get better and better and better
27:09Michael Jordan's the only player that could ever turn it on and off and he'd never freaking turn it off
27:15Jordan look at that
27:18holy cow
27:20right after junior year I was planning on coming back to school
27:32but coach Smith recommended that I go pro
27:36he was very comfortable in Chapel Hill
27:39but at the same time he was here and he could be one top three or four picks
27:45so he was weighing heavy on it
27:49well to tell you the truth I really just decided I guess an hour and a half ago
27:57I didn't know I was you know 50-50 and I talked to coach this morning and you know he helped me and my parents helped me
28:05and I just you know I felt that would be better for me to start now while I'm young
28:11the USA Network presents the 1984 NBA college draft
28:21we are just about ready to go as we go to the podium and introduce commissioner of the NBA David Stern
28:28The Houston Rockets select Akeem Olajuwon of the University of Houston
28:36Olajuwon would have been first anybody who picked including me
28:42Portland had Clyde Grefsel
28:44who played the same position as Michael
28:48so Portland's feeling was that they needed a center
28:52now the second choice owned by the Portland Trailblazers
28:55let's go to the commissioner David Stern
28:57Portland selects Sam Bowie University of Kentucky
29:03so I knew that you know Jordan would be there for us
29:08Michael Jordan seems to be the next one up
29:11the Chicago Bulls pick Michael Jordan of the University of North Carolina
29:18Chicago Bulls having the third pick in the draft and went with the sensational Michael Jordan of North Carolina
29:25Jordan who led North Carolina now looking to step in to lead the Bulls
29:29you've got a great opportunity to step in there and win a city that is crying for a winner
29:34perhaps you can turn that Bulls thing around what do you think
29:36hopefully I can go in and contribute and maybe turn it around
29:40you know I'm looking forward to it
29:46the reality is we were lucky the draft was before the Olympics
29:51Michael became the most popular amateur basketball player in the world because of the Olympics
29:59Jordan gets it puts it in the hole
30:02Jordan Jordan
30:05he's the best athlete he's one of the best competitors
30:07he's one of the most skilled players
30:09and that to me makes him the best basketball player that I've ever seen play
30:13I came from a program in college
30:32it was about team game
30:34you know it was a clean program
30:36it prepared me to go into the Chicago situation
30:39which was totally different
30:42before Michael Jordan got to the Bulls in 1984
30:46drugs were prevalent
30:48cocaine and recreational drugs of all types
30:51so he had a lot of partiers
30:54one of the articles I read they called it
30:56the Bulls Traveling Cocaine Circus
30:58I never read that
31:08accurate?
31:12ah
31:13look
31:14guys were doing things that I didn't see
31:17I had one event
31:19pre-season
31:20I think we were in Peoria
31:21it's in a hotel
31:22so I'm trying to find my teammates
31:24so I started knocking on doors
31:26I get to this one door
31:28and I knock on the door
31:29and I could hear someone says
31:31shhh
31:33someone's outside
31:35and then you hear this deep voice says
31:37who is it?
31:38I says MJ
31:39ah
31:40and then they all said
31:41oh fuck he's just a rookie
31:42don't worry about it
31:43so they open up the door
31:45I walk in and
31:46practically the whole team
31:48was in there
31:49and it was like
31:51things I've never seen in my life
31:53you know as a young kid
31:55you know you got all
31:57you got your lines over here
31:58you got your weed smokers over here
32:00you got your women over here
32:02so the first thing I said
32:04look man
32:05you know I'm out
32:06you know
32:07because all I can think about
32:08if they come and raid this place
32:10right about now
32:11I am just as guilty as everybody else has had
32:14that's in this room
32:15and from that point on
32:17you know I was more or less on my own
32:19his townhouse is just a regular place
32:23and at the start
32:24his mom would be there an awful lot
32:26and uh
32:27Jordan's buddies would come by
32:28you know players and what have you
32:30but he was just living like
32:31he's still in college
32:33I enjoyed you know just hanging out
32:35playing cards
32:36watching movies
32:38you know I wasn't going to the clubs
32:40whatever somebody else might have been doing off the court
32:43if it was partying whatever
32:45that wasn't part of what he wanted to do
32:48orange juice and 7-up was his go-to
32:51I don't smoke
32:52I don't do lines
32:54I didn't drink at the time
32:56I was looking to just get some rest
32:58get up and go play
33:00when Jordan first came to the Bulls
33:02he was a number three pick
33:04so a lot of people thought
33:05well he's only 6'6
33:07so how much can he really do
33:09we wish he were 7'1
33:11but he isn't
33:12Michael got to realize that he's not 7'0
33:15so he's not going to carry a team in the NBA
33:17I really don't think that
33:19in the NBA anymore
33:21there's really not any such thing as a one man team
33:24and I don't think that you can come in expecting one guy
33:27to turn the whole thing around
33:29there was no one alive
33:30not Coach Smith
33:31not Rod Thorne
33:33who drafted him
33:34no one
33:36none of the experts thought that he would become what he became
33:39when I first got to Chicago
33:42I went in considering myself the lowest on the totem pole
33:45whatever people have been saying about me
33:47I still had to earn my stripes
33:50when he arrived into the gym on the first day of practice
33:54you can see that this guy is the best player here
33:58this cat is different
34:00when we drafted Michael
34:02I did not know how good Michael was
34:05the strength he had
34:07the physical strength
34:08was amazing
34:12the first day of practice
34:14I got a call from an assistant coach
34:17and he said to me
34:19congratulations
34:20and I said for what?
34:22and he said
34:23you did not screw this draft up
34:26this guy is really good
34:28for the first day in practice
34:31my mentality was
34:33whoever is the team leader on that team
34:35I'm going after him
34:37and I'm not going to do it with my voice
34:38because I had no voice
34:40I had no status
34:42I have to do it with the way that I play
34:45I felt like I earned my stripes in the third game
34:49Milwaukee has always been a nemesis for Chicago
34:55every time we played them
34:57they beat us
34:58they had Sidney Moncrief
35:00who was the reigning defensive player of the year
35:03they had a tremendous defensive team
35:05I kind of thought I knew his potential
35:08because I had played against the best players in the NBA so far
35:11the Madriks and the Birds
35:13and the Dr. J and Kareem
35:14some great players
35:15and all of a sudden
35:17this rookie comes into the NBA
35:19I watched the way he moved on the court
35:21and his instincts
35:22I'm like wow
35:23that's going to be scary
35:25Milwaukee Bucks
35:26have taken control here
35:27and they have a nine point lead
35:29we were losing
35:30going into the fourth quarter
35:32before
35:33guys would get down on themselves
35:34and then just kind of give up
35:36you know
35:37okay we just chalked this up
35:38we look for the next game
35:39and I'm saying well
35:40the game's not over with
35:42and Kevin Lockery sensed that in me
35:44and he just started feeding me the ball
35:46and I just started going
35:47Jordan now is 24
35:48and he keeps the Bulls in it
35:49Jordan goes for it
35:51gets it
35:52there's Jordan driving
35:53woo
35:54woo
35:55woo
35:56woo
35:57every time we went to trap him
35:58he would split
35:59go down the lane
36:01make a really difficult shot
36:03he was so explosive
36:05I don't think it's anybody that could defend Michael
36:08we'd come back and we'd win the game
36:09from that point on
36:11everybody on that team felt like
36:13this young kid is not gonna let us lose
36:15everybody on that Bull team
36:17within a two week period
36:19knew he was the best player we had
36:21and now the noise factor begins to really increase
36:25here is the man
36:26Michael Jordan
36:27from North Carolina
36:28the number three pick in the NBA draft
36:31as a rookie he was not a rookie
36:45he proved right out of the gates
36:48there was none other like him
36:51it was like he had like a extra levitation gear or something
37:01it just didn't seem real
37:02you can't cope you should have broke because I ain't no joke
37:05his balance his footwork his fundamentals
37:09How do you do
37:15I got a question
37:17the arrogance is cancelled
37:19he can keep the average dance
37:20Michael has a heart attack
37:21nobody's smiling
37:23cause you're expressing the rhyme of them style
37:25how's the transition been from college to the NBA
37:28well I think it's been pretty easy
37:31If anything he played sound familiar, I'll wait to eat, say, play him.
37:35So on behalf of this who broke, you can get a smack for this.
37:38I ain't no joke.
37:54He's only played professional basketball a few months, but at age 21,
37:58Michael Jordan is the National Basketball Association's hottest draw.
38:03Since he arrived, the stadium, which used to be two-thirds empty, has been sold out every game.
38:09When Michael first came to town, I didn't have the money to buy tickets for a Bulls game,
38:15even the discount ones back in the day.
38:17I was pretty broke.
38:19But suddenly you have a sports figure that puts Chicago on the map
38:26and that everybody was able to rally around.
38:29Chicagoans kind of like to think of themselves as being a little tough.
38:32Blue collar, roll up your sleeves, you never mail it in.
38:37So people love to see somebody who gives it everything they've got.
38:40Jordan did that.
38:41Tonight's attendance, 18,688.
38:45When Michael came in 84, we got an immediate shot in the arm.
38:50The city was just beside itself.
38:52The interest just grew, and it grew dramatically.
38:55It's just a phenomenal thing to kind of watch it.
38:59Country boy that comes into the big city and makes the big city a special place.
39:03It seems like it's exciting again.
39:07He does some things that I've just never seen before.
39:09Words can't describe him.
39:11He's poetry in motion.
39:151984-85 season will go down in history as the year Michael Jordan came to town.
39:19He has touched the hearts of Chicagoland and the nation.
39:22What's in his immediate future?
39:24Coronation as the NBA's Rookie of the Year.
39:26A fitting tribute to a man who rescued what some considered a dying franchise.
39:32It's the 1984-85 NBA Rookie of the Year.
39:36Michael?
40:26Come on, Hawk.
40:36Come on, Hawk.
40:38I like this.
40:39It's crazy.
40:40This is French, you know.
40:41How's it work?
40:42You just getting in?
40:43She's here.
40:44No, I was here.
40:44The game last night.
40:45Great.
40:45We came in.
40:46Cool.
40:47We didn't know about you.
40:49Yeah, sure.
40:49Enjoyed the photo of you.
40:50Yeah.
40:51You guys are not allowed.
40:54Sorry.
40:55No, I'm just kidding.
40:56Thanks, Mike.
40:59All right.
41:01I'd like to thank you for coming on this ride, on this fabulous train.
41:07You got to set me up for skillset when I get back.
41:10You get this shit taken care of.
41:12You got to set me up for skillset when I get the ball permanently.
41:17Right.
41:17That was good.
41:18Yes, the one.
41:20No dream.
41:21I can't ever wear it.
41:22I can't ever wear it.
41:23Basketball fans from around the world have been gathering since early today here at the
41:27Palais Omnisport de Bercy here in Paris.
41:30They're here to see one man, Michael Jordan, five-time NBA champion, Chicago Bulls.
41:36Scottie Pippen wasn't there.
41:53He had an injury, you know, and you figure, well, they don't need him.
41:57Dennis Rodman wasn't there either.
41:59He was holding up.
41:59But it was almost irrelevant because he knew that Michael was going to annihilate everybody.
42:06The Bulls are without Dennis Rodman and they're without Scottie Pippen.
42:12Intimidation.
42:13That's what history's all about.
42:14These guys have never played against a team like this.
42:18Nothing but net for Michael Jordan.
42:21Jordan, look out.
42:233-0.
42:24Jordan.
42:25Michael played every game as if it was his last.
42:31Every single game.
42:33There was never a day off.
42:36He knew that there was going to be somebody in that crowd that never saw him play before.
42:40That's what kept him going.
42:41It wasn't like, oh, I went to see this guy play and he only got 12 points.
42:44It didn't happen.
42:45Call Haagen-Gazs because I want two scoops of this scoop shot.
42:50The French players just helped us out there.
42:53The Bulls won by 26 Jordan.
42:55Il fait 3 p.m.
42:57Hey, man.
42:58Where is the first test of 3 p.m.?
43:00No.
43:01I get balls here.
43:02I'll tell you today.
43:02You know what I'm saying?
43:03All right?
43:04How you helping me?
43:09See, man.
43:09I'm fucking with you, man.
43:11I'm like Jeffrey Marcus now.
43:12I won the championship.
43:13I'm going to go tell them.
43:14Hey.
43:14Don't count.
43:14You can go home, home, home.
43:35Come on, get out of here.
43:47Is that going to the Viral Center?
43:48No.
43:49Keep it.
43:50Don't let Jerry get it.
43:53What?
43:55All right.
43:58All you guys have never won before, welcome to being a champion.
44:03That's a good start.
44:05Tonight, Michael put on quite a show,
44:08and we're proud to go home and continue on this quest
44:13for another championship in 1997-98.
44:22Phil always looked for a theme for every season,
44:25and given that it was the last year we were going to be together,
44:28management had already made that decision.
44:31In typical Phil fashion, you know, he had a name for it.
44:37We'd arrive at the practice facility.
44:39It's our first official meeting as a team.
44:42Get the team handbook,
44:45laminate it on the front page,
44:47last dance,
44:49and talk to the players about particularly how important it was for us
44:53to really be together in this last run that we were going to have.
44:58So I called it the last dance.
45:00That whole meeting was,
45:02enjoy what's happening,
45:04because this is it.
45:15Good evening, everyone, and welcome once again to Bulls basketball.
45:18The Bulls open the whole portion of their 97-98 campaign.
45:22Game time programs tonight, folks.
45:24Only two blocks on the outside.
45:26If you don't go see Michael Jordan,
45:27why, you're missing out on life.
45:29That's for sure.
45:30She said, do you want Christmas presents under the tree,
45:34or do you want to see Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman?
45:39Yeah.
45:39We picked the Bulls.
45:40Tonight, Jordan and the Bulls return to Chicago for the ring ceremony.
45:49It's not like the first time,
45:51but it ain't bad for MJ and company.
45:52Ring number five and banner number five.
45:54Your fifth ring ceremony is just as exciting as the first.
45:57Even more so.
45:58Put it in perspective, we look for number six.
46:00There you go.
46:01Good luck tonight.
46:01Thanks for stopping.
46:02Always nice to hear Michael talk about the possibility of winning number six,
46:06and you'll see that ring ceremony.
46:08It's only moments away now here at the United Center.
46:15It's the last night we celebrated the championship for last year.
46:19It's going to be a nice celebration, and we'll enjoy it.
46:21But remember, what's important tonight is winning this ballgame.
46:23It's going to start off a little bit.
46:25So get yourself back and tune to what we have to do
46:27and take care of business tonight.
46:29Okay.
46:29All right, guys.
46:32David Stern, thank you for stopping to talk to us.
46:38Good to be here.
46:39Talk about the perspective you can put on this team
46:41and what it has meant to your league.
46:43There'll never be quite another team like this.
46:45They have gotten to be the number one sports team in the world.
46:50It's at a very exciting time in the life of the league and in my life, too.
47:02I'm here on behalf of basketball fans around the world
47:17to congratulate the 1997 NBA champion Chicago Bulls,
47:21a team for our time, the basketball team of our time, and one for the ages.
47:28The architect of the 1996-97 Bulls championship team
47:32and two-time executive of the year, Jerry Krause.
47:35Bill Jackson, the coach, and now your five-time world champion Chicago Bulls.
47:53Bill Leamington, Steve Kerr, Tony Kukoc, Dennis Ruffin.
48:12Scottie Pippen.
48:20And good Carolina.
48:23And good Texas.
48:26Michael Jordan.
48:28You guys remember in 1984 when they drafted Michael Jordan to the city of Chicago?
48:42I said then that we'd be champions by the time I leave.
48:47Well, we're a five-time champion going for six.
48:51And we need your support.
48:52Thank you very, very much.
48:57That season could be the end.
48:59You know, it could very well be the end, and we had to think that way.
49:03All right, let's get me focused back on this game.
49:05Let's get out of the clock quicker and beam what we did last time.
49:08What time is it?
49:10Game time!
49:11Let's go!
