00:00Welcome to the walkabout for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.
00:04The press conference has just wrapped up,
00:06there's a few drivers that are coming my way
00:08and I might grab the man of the hour, the home team.
00:10Hey Dylan, how are you going?
00:12You excited for your home event?
00:14Yeah, really excited and it looks like we've got some fantastic British weather.
00:17It's always like this, remember?
00:18Oh, OK.
00:19Well, the wind is looking all so good this weekend.
00:21Have you done much sailing here?
00:22What can fans expect on this race course?
00:24We had a good day on the water yesterday and some great conditions.
00:28So if we get that, we'll put on a fantastic show and just seeing how close the start's going to be to the show.
00:33It could be quite spicy on Sunday.
00:35You guys, you know, you've had really good starts this season and then struggled a bit.
00:38What have you been analysing to put into place this weekend?
00:42Yeah, we were really disappointed with the events in San Fran and New York.
00:46But we bounced back on the second day in New York and finished strong.
00:50So hopefully build on that momentum and we know it's a long season.
00:54So it's going to be up and down and hopefully we've had our little low bit.
00:57And we know that your flight controller, Luke Parkinson, likes to send it.
01:01So is he looking forward to the forecast this weekend?
01:03Yeah, absolutely.
01:04Yeah, we'd love a bit of everything.
01:05And if we get some big wind and the small wings, that would be super exciting.
01:08See if we can break that top speed.
01:10Awesome.
01:11Well, thanks so much, Dylan, and enjoy the weekend.
01:12Thank you.
01:13All right.
01:14Who else can we grab?
01:15Oh, perfect.
01:16Nicole is right here next to me.
01:17Hi.
01:18You all right if I steal you away for a second?
01:19How are you going?
01:20Good.
01:21You guys, we're matching.
01:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:23The good thing about red is it can be Spanish, it can be Emirates, it can be everything.
01:28But here we are in Portsmouth.
01:30You guys have won the last two events.
01:32Going for a third.
01:34Clearly going for it, but let's see what happens now.
01:38We'll try to do everything we can to get into that final and fight for the win on Sunday.
01:44But yeah, let's see.
01:45It looks like it's going to be an interesting race course.
01:47A lot going on.
01:48Wind, some tides, some...
01:51Some rocks in the way.
01:53In the middle.
01:54So yeah, it'll be exciting.
01:55Now, last season obviously you guys ended up winning the championship, but you weren't
02:00kind of at the top the whole time.
02:01Whereas this one, you're leading the pack, we're halfway through the season.
02:04Does it feel different fighting from the top and trying to keep everyone below you?
02:09It is for sure different.
02:10I mean, I think we also came into the season obviously from a way different place.
02:16Last season we started being last where a fifth feels like a really good result and
02:21then you win the championship and obviously then a fifth feels like, you know, it doesn't
02:26feel the same, even though obviously with as close as it gets and how close the racing
02:32is every point matters.
02:34So yeah, it is different.
02:36But obviously we're happy with the results we're getting with more than the results,
02:42how we're working together and how we're improving and the fact that from that win
02:47we've been able to really get into the fight and show that we're up there as well.
02:51So yeah, really happy with that.
02:53Awesome.
02:54Well, enjoy the weekends racing.
02:55It's going to be fun out there.
02:56Thank you.
02:57All right, who else can we find?
02:59Oh, Peter Berling's this way.
03:02We'll just wait right here and he'll walk straight past me.
03:05We hope.
03:08Peter Berling, what's happening?
03:10Lisa, how are you?
03:11Good, how are you?
03:12Good, thank you.
03:13You excited to get racing again here in England?
03:15We haven't been here for a while.
03:16Yeah, I mean, it looks like an awesome grandstand.
03:18It's my first time seeing it driving in just before this press conference.
03:21Yeah, it's super cool to see this set up and looking forward to seeing it fall over the weekend
03:26and trying to put on a good show.
03:27Now, Auckland has the record for the biggest LGP event ever but I hear this is going to rival it
03:32but do you think the fans will be the same?
03:34I think it's going to be pretty hard to top Auckland, especially all the boats around,
03:40the kind of cityscape in the background.
03:42But yeah, fan numbers, I mean, hopefully it sets us a new good benchmark for next year
03:47and we're always trying to improve the Auckland events.
03:50The only thing we can learn from what they've done here in Portsmouth will be super cool.
03:53And you guys had a great event in New York.
03:55You feel like the momentum's coming back your way.
03:57You're back in that top three.
03:58Does it feel good?
03:59Yeah, yeah, we're definitely reasonably happy with the American legs.
04:04I feel like we're still learning and evolving and trying to get comfortable as a group
04:10but really pleased with the way we're doing that and just looking forward to continuing
04:15that progression into this weekend.
04:17I mean, the forecast looks awesome back on the T-foils which will be good
04:21and the course looks quite interesting to be fair.
04:24I don't think we've sailed a course like this before so it'll be just all about
04:27who adapts and puts their best foot forward or we'll take a win.
04:30Yeah, what do you think the trickiest thing is going to be about this tracetrack?
04:32Or what is kind of the key this weekend?
04:36Yeah, well a couple of the drafts I've seen have had some pretty weird kind of offset courses.
04:41It could be pretty interesting.
04:44But yeah, I'm sure it's just going to be about who gets off the start well.
04:48The start's always so critical for these and if you don't get off the start well,
04:52making sure you tick off a good number of boats as well because you're definitely
04:57not going to get all of them when you're right at the top in mark one.
05:00And then just doing the basics really well.
05:03Make sure the boat's nice and reliable.
05:05I mean, it's going to be good, right?
05:08Looks like an awesome weekend and plenty going on.
05:12Yeah, the racing's going to be epic. Enjoy it.
05:14Will do.
05:15Thanks, Pete.
05:17Alrighty, who else shall we chat to?
05:20Shall we head into the chaos?
05:24Hello, how are you going?
05:26Good.
05:27You're commuting from home? You live near here, right?
05:28I do, yeah. I was in my front room this morning.
05:31How nice is that after travelling the world?
05:33Yeah, no, it's a bit of a surreal feeling to be honest.
05:36I'm so used to jumping on a plane and coming to these events and to just be walking
05:40out the front door and down to the adrenaline lounge is a, yeah,
05:43it's a little bit strange to be honest.
05:45Well, as a local, what can we expect this weekend?
05:47Everyone's telling me the forecast is fantastic.
05:49It is fantastic, yeah.
05:51It's south westerly.
05:53I think on Saturday it's looking like 12 knots, which is perfect.
05:58A little bit windier on Sunday.
06:00So, I mean, I don't think you could really ask for much more.
06:03Hopefully the rain stays away.
06:04I think there's a little bit of rain, but it wouldn't be a British event
06:07without a little bit of that.
06:08Exactly.
06:09I made sure to pack my wet weather gear for this one, so I'm all good.
06:11But racing this weekend, looks like we're going to be back on the T-foils.
06:14Yeah.
06:15Are you guys looking forward to that?
06:16Yeah, we are actually.
06:17We've had good form on the T-foils at previous events.
06:21So, yeah, excited to get back onto them.
06:24I think, to be honest, I think most crews will be keen to get back on the T-foils.
06:29It was interesting in New York getting back onto the L boards and, to be honest,
06:34the boats, you know, they're still very fast, but they felt a little bit sluggish
06:37in comparison to the T's.
06:38So, yeah, excited to get them back out.
06:40And the other thing that people said, there's a few little obstacles out there
06:43on the racetrack.
06:44What can you tell us about that to look out for?
06:45Yeah, there's a few obstacles.
06:47There's, you know, concrete Navy forts and big 40-metre posts to get aircraft carriers
06:53in and out in Portsmouth.
06:55Metal channel markers.
06:56Yeah, I think any, our strategist and eyes out for us is going to have heaps on this weekend.
07:02Well, if so, GP wasn't hard enough out there racing, a few more obstacles and nothing,
07:06right?
07:07But, I mean, the fans are going to be amazing.
07:09Obviously, you guys don't have a home event in Canada this year.
07:12You will next year.
07:13Yeah.
07:14But, can we see some Canadian flags in the grandstand this weekend then?
07:16I'm pretty sure we will, yeah.
07:17I'm pretty sure we will.
07:19Awesome.
07:20Enjoy the racing, Giles.
07:21Thanks for chatting.
07:22Thank you.
07:23Alright, who else do we need to get?
07:24I know Tom Slingsby is down that way.
07:26If we want to wait in line.
07:30Alright, well, I found Tom Slingsby.
07:32Tom, we're here in the UK.
07:33Sun's out.
07:34Wind's going to be great this weekend.
07:35Yeah, the forecast looks amazing.
07:36The sun is out.
07:37The wind's supposed to come in.
07:39I think they're expecting a little bit of rain tomorrow before the racing and then the sun comes
07:44out for the racing with a great forecast.
07:46So, can't not be excited.
07:48Now, there always is like an Aussie-Kiwi rivalry but there's also a good Aussie-British rivalry.
07:52Well, I think Australians just love rivalry it sounds like but, you know, there's the ashes.
07:56But I'm hearing that this is the splashes.
07:57You know, beating the UK, the British on British waters feels pretty good.
08:01It definitely does.
08:02I've done it a couple of times actually in Cows in 2019, one of the first South GP events.
08:07We got the win here and then we also won the event in Plymouth.
08:11Yeah, having to watch the British squirm during our national anthem is something I'll remember forever.
08:18And if I can do that again this week, I will.
08:21Now, New York, it was such a tricky event.
08:23Every venue has its own challenges.
08:25What are the challenges that this race course is going to have?
08:28This race course has got a few challenges.
08:30I think the biggest one being the fort in the middle of the racetrack and then also some of the big piers going on and the big pile markers.
08:38That's something we don't have in a lot of events.
08:41It sounds like the wind is going to be up and there will be waves but as Aussies that suits us.
08:46We like that.
08:47And so for me, it's probably going to be the, in cycling, they call it road furniture with a lot of roundabouts and stuff.
08:52I guess we call it sea furniture out here with forts and piles on the racetrack.
08:57Well, you're pretty race ready because congratulations, you just got second at the Moth Worlds.
09:02Was it nice to go sailing, I mean, just by yourself, no offence to your team and just kind of just reconnect on that foiling boat?
09:09It really was.
09:10For me, I sort of did it for my own development and it'd been four years since I'd raced a solo boat again.
09:16And just going out there and learning all the skills and racing the boat by myself without anyone having to help me or tell me what to do.
09:23It was quite nice and it feels really sharp in my skills.
09:26I feel really good heading into this weekend and I feel fresh.
09:29I've just done a month of foiling in Lake Garda and feeling ready to roll.
09:32Awesome.
09:33Well, enjoy the weekend and thanks for chatting.
09:34Awesome.
09:35Thank you.
09:36Well, Russell, everyone wants to know what you think this weekend.
09:38Who do you think is going to come out on top?
09:40Well, you know, I think the Australians are going to be strong.
09:44Slingsby's coming in with high confidence, so he's going to be strong, I think.
09:50That team is always consistent and it's a high wind forecast on Sunday.
09:55They're pretty good in those sort of conditions.
09:58I think the Spanish have been racing really well.
10:02You wouldn't rule them out.
10:04They're probably going to be your top two teams.
10:07I'm actually also picking Canada, North Star Canada, to really have a good event.
10:12You know, I think this is right in their wheelhouse as well in terms of the conditions.
10:19And any surprises?
10:20You obviously picked that Mubala Brazil was going to get a win.
10:23Who's going to be the surprise this weekend?
10:25Well, if there was a surprise, I think it might be Brazil again in the odd race.
10:32You know, they actually sell remarkably well as well in the high wind conditions.
10:37You know, they prefer the stronger winds than the lighter winds.
10:40But Sunday looks like it's going to be a real test, you know, for all these teams.
10:46So, you know, we'll see.
10:48It'll be great to watch and we'll catch up at the end of the weekend and see what happens.
10:50Yeah, yeah.
10:51Thank you.
10:52Thanks, Russell.
10:53Well, that wraps up the walkabout for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix.
10:55As you heard, it's going to be an awesome weekend of racing.
10:58I can't wait to see how it all plays out.
11:00And I'll see you for the debrief.
11:18I can't wait to see how it comes down.
11:20You may have a chance to manage.
11:22I can't wait to see how it's going to be a new one waiting for you.
11:27But that's a lot of conflict.
11:28I can't wait.
11:29I can't wait to see how it works.
11:30I don't know.
11:31I know that it will be a good idea.
11:32I know.
11:33It will be a good idea.
11:34It will be an awful person but in person.
11:36And in person, it's going to do well.
