00:55on the 14th of march 1988. after receiving his primary education in bandocui he attended a high
01:01school in bobo diolazo the second largest city in burkina faso where he was known as being quiet
01:08and very talented from 2006 he studied geology at the university of ouagadougou he was part of the
01:15association of muslim students and the marxist national association of students of burkina faso
01:21aneb in the latter he rose to delegate and became known for defending his classmates and disputes
01:28he graduated from the university with honors traore joined the army of burkina faso in 2009
01:34and graduated from the george's namoano military academy he was sent to morocco for anti-aircraft
01:40training before being transferred to an infantry unit in kaya a town in northern burkina faso
01:46promoted to lieutenant in 2014 traore joined minusma a united nations peacekeeping force involved in the
01:54mali war in 2018 he was cited as one of the minusma soldiers who showed courage during major rebel
02:01attacks in the tambuktu region he subsequently returned to burkina faso where he assisted in

02:20to captain in 2020 traore later said that he became disillusioned with his country's leadership around
02:26this time as he saw the widespread lack of equipment of burkinaabe soldiers while politicians were handing
02:34out suitcases of money for bribery he gradually became the spokesman for soldiers stationed in the
02:39north who were frustrated over their government traore was part of the group of army officers that
02:45supported the january 2022 burkina faso coup d'etat and brought the patriotic movement for safeguard and
02:51restoration military junta to power from march 2022 he served as the head of an artillery regiment in kaya

05:42most political parties boycotted the consultations the result was the extension of triori's mandate for an
05:48additional five years while also allowing him to contest the next presidential elections
05:53on the 6th of december 2024 traore dissolved his government and removed itambela as prime minister
06:00later that month the government issued pardons for 21 ex-military officers who had been convicted prior to
06:06triori's rise to power for their involvement in the 2015 burkina faso coup attempt in april 2025
06:13triori's government announced that it had prevented a planned coup attempt which it accused the
06:18government of cote d'ivoire of backing in november 2023 burkina faso's council of ministers approved the
06:25construction of the country's first gold refinery this marked a significant development in burkina
06:31faso's gold sector aiming to capitalize on the nation's growing gold mining industry triori seeks to gain more
06:38control over its gold resources by refining gold domestically rather than exporting unrefined
06:43materials this would increase government revenue and economic benefits from the gold sector the
06:48refinery is set to create 100 new jobs and 5 000 new indirect jobs with the refinery producing roughly
06:55400 kilograms of gold daily in february 2024 traore ordered the suspension of the issuance of export
07:02permits for small-scale private gold production a move reportedly aimed at tackling illicit trade
07:08which consists of smuggling gold abroad avoiding taxes and regulations and cleaning up the artisanal gold
07:14sector this suspension aims to crack down on such activities and ensure that exported gold is
07:20properly documented and contributes to government revenue the government hopes this suspension will
07:26establish a more formal and accountable system for exporting small-scale produced gold
07:31in the first half of 2025 burkina faso accelerated its state-led nationalization of foreign-owned mining
07:37assets as part of the broader shift toward resource sovereignty on the 29th of april prime minister
07:43jean-emmanuel wedrago announced that the government intended to continue expanding control over foreign-owned
07:49industrial mines this followed the enactment of a revised mining code in 2024 and the creation of the
07:55societe de participation meniere du burkina sop amib a state-owned mining company by then sop amib had
08:05already taken control of two operational gold mines bongo and vognian previously owned by london-listed
08:12endeavor mining these moves were meant to enhance national revenue and prioritize local expertise despite
08:19investor concern these initiatives saw a surge in state collected gold in 2024 state-controlled entities
08:26collected over eight tons of gold and in just the first quarter of 2025 more than 11 tons of gold were
08:32collected on the 12th of june 2025 a presidential decree finalized the transfer of five additional gold
08:39mining assets into sop amib these included two operating mines and three exploration licenses from
08:48subsidiaries of endeavor mining and lilium namely wagnian gold sa s-e-m-a-f-o bungu sa resources ferkay
08:57sarel griffin minerals burkina faso sarel and lilium mining services burkina faso sarel at that time
09:05burkina faso ranked as africa's fourth largest gold producer in july 2024 traoray's government announced
09:13its intention to criminalize homosexuality in burkina faso traoray's government has faced controversy
09:20over its policies towards the freedom of the press in march 2023 his government banned france 24 from
09:27broadcasting in the country after the network aired an interview with the leader of al-qaeda in the
09:32islamic maghreb several months after banning radio france international on grounds of having aired a
09:38threat issued by a terrorist leader in june 2024 four prominent burkinabe journalists who had
09:45criticized the government were detained with the government announcing several months later that
09:50three of the journalists had been forcibly conscripted into the burkinabe military in march
09:552025 an additional three journalists were detained and conscripted the islamist insurgency in burkina
10:02faso has been a major focus of traoray's presidency in his first month in power his government launched
10:08a major recruitment campaign for the volunteers for the defense of the homeland auxiliary force
10:13recruiting 50 000 people in april 2023 traoray declared a general mobilization of the population
10:20to support the military as rebel forces continued to increase the rate of their attacks traoray publicly
10:27pledged to reconquer all rebel-held areas and that there would be no negotiations until the insurgency
