00:00This is all generated from one man that none of us has ever met, Nelson Mandela.
00:07In 1988, Nelson Mandela was behind bars in South Africa
00:12when a collection of musicians and celebrities coming together in London
00:16to call for his release sent a message around the world.
00:24Well, it was an 11 and a half hour broadcast to 600 million people.
00:30Well, there were only 5 billion in the world.
00:32To get that, we had to not only sell the program to 67 countries,
00:37we had to give it away to 30 African countries that wanted to broadcast it.
00:41Promoter Tony Hollingsworth organized the all-star 70th birthday tribute for Mandela.
00:46His goal was to change the way some referred to the jailed leader.
00:51The run-up to the first global broadcast,
00:53it was still possible for Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister of England
00:57to stand up in the House of Commons and ask the question in public,
01:01how is it that the BBC can be broadcasting an event for a terrorist?
01:06And that's how powerful that word was.
01:09And the apartheid regime knew it,
01:11that if they could keep him being labeled as a terrorist,
01:14they could keep him in prison.
01:15Talking about a revolution, oh no.
01:19And I said, you can't get a black terrorist leader out of prison,
01:22you can get a black leader out of prison.
01:23So we got to get rid of one word, terrorist.
01:26With that goal in mind, he recruited stars like Dire Straits,
01:30Whitney Houston, and Peter Gabriel,
01:32figuring that exposing a global audience to Mandela through music
01:36could change the conversation.
01:38At that point in time in 1908,
01:40the whole of the music industry was very, very powerful.
01:43It was big on television.
01:46And so by them helping to come on board,
01:49it allowed this instrument that we had to project his image across the world.
01:54Let us tell them that the whole world is watching.
01:58In the aftermath of the broadcast,
02:00as the pressure that would ultimately free Mandela
02:02mounted on the South African government,
02:05Hollingsworth got a letter from his concert partners,
02:08the African National Congress and the anti-apartheid movement.
02:11So, dear Tony, certainly it marks a landmark in our history,
02:16the greatest single event we have undertaken in support of the struggle.
02:21Now we can certainly look forward to the future
02:24with enormously received revived hope.
02:27Best birthday party we've ever been to.
02:30Thanks for having us.
02:31Thanks for having us.
