Over 150,000 actors and scriptwriters in Hollywood went on strike for months in 2023. In part because they worried about being replaced by artificial intelligence. But is that fear justified?

00:00In mid-2023, more than 150,000 workers went on strike and brought Hollywood to a standstill
00:07for several months. One cause for the strike was artificial intelligence. The trade unions
00:13have even labeled AI an existential threat. Screenwriters fear that AI might take over
00:19their jobs in the future, and actors are worried that they could be replaced by AI-generated
00:24replicas. These aren't baseless concerns. New technology also always leads to changes,
00:30says Max Wiedemann, head of AI at a European film studio.
00:37Some jobs will actually become more important. Some jobs will change.
00:41Other jobs might actually be cut. And then you've got entirely new jobs that will be needed.
00:48In Hollywood, the trade unions were able to require more protections from AI technology.
00:53Still, there's no way around the fact that AI is here to stay.
01:03I think that those who engage with the technology will be more likely to be in a position where
01:07they can choose which direction they'd like to take, and which of these areas they'd like to work in.
