00:00It's the Belito Pro semifinal number one, Vahina Fiero of France taking on Sofia Medina from Brazil.
00:12Medina got a lead early on in this. Slightly safe snap to finish and that isn't safe.
00:18She gets washed over the rock. Oh, it's nasty. Oh no. Sofia Medina straight up the rocks there. Wow.
00:25The way I hit the rock was very strong. I hurt my back and it wasn't going away, that pain.
00:34Certainly she has been smashed on those rocks. That definitely hurt. Definitely a little bit of pain in the back there.
00:43My dad always teaches me that the strongest surfer is the one that always stands up.
00:49So like when you fall, you gotta stand up again.
00:52Sofia, it's good to see her making her way back out.
00:58Thankfully she looks okay.
01:07Sofia, she's back. She's got a lead here in this semifinal.
01:11Time check. Surfers, eight minutes remaining.
01:14All right, another crack for Fiero here. First turn, just banks one, whips it off the top and then sets up with a slice.
01:23But nicely surfed.
01:26Here's Medina with a bit of drive.
01:28And she's got a section of great hit from her, but she gets exploded.
01:31Still going to get a number in. Let's see where this puts us.
01:34And it's going to be a tough battle yet at the end.
01:37Faraday Medina, she'll use it to get you, which will look cool, but it won't be a completion and it won't add to her score.
01:45Fiero will go here. Nice looking wave. First crack is good.
01:49If she hits this, which she does, and she completes it, it'll be the highest score of the heat for Fiero.
01:55Fiero Medina hammers a section. It's a big cut-out olo section.
02:06Last of red, it's a 7.07. Waiting for last of blue.
02:13Sofia Medina held the lead throughout that 35-minute semifinal.
02:18Her requirement has jumped up.
02:22Not easy to be on the beach here.
02:25Not easy to be in those rash vests.
02:27We are waiting for scores. Last of blue.
02:32Judges are reviewing the replay for blue.
02:35Sofia Medina. You're looking for a 5.57.
02:39This is career-defining moments for some of our athletes.
02:42And last of blue, it does come in.
02:50It's not enough. A 5.1. Last of blue.
02:54So we see a change in situation in the dying minutes of that first semifinal.
03:00Congratulations. Fahin Fiero finding the 7.07.
03:05Taking the win ahead of blue.
03:07Sofia Medina finishing in second place.
03:10ams.
03:17Mas está bom.
03:20Eu me cortei todas.
03:23Eu devo ter, tipo, deve estar cortado tudo atrás de mim.
03:28Té.
03:29Bati tudo.
03:32É, rasveu a like.
03:34Eu deixei tudo de molinho, sabe?
03:35Eu sei.
03:37Está mais cara.
03:37Foi por muito pouco.
03:39Rasveu é qualquer like.
03:40the third wave I got little injured my back hurts really bad right now it's my
03:45best result yet so like I'm grateful but I really wanted so just like hard to
03:52take it because I gave everything I had and I really wanted to win really
03:59Até na semifinal vingou até o último minuto poderia ter ido pra final apesar de
04:05hoje não ter passado pra final mas o terceiro lugar é muito honroso
04:09é porque eu não tenho muito orgulho de uma honra também
04:34welcome surf fans we are all systems go
04:39The US Open is the fourth stop on the challenges and it's huge event. There's a
04:45big crowd, there's heaps of sponsors, the industry is huge, everyone's there.
04:50Everyone's looking to get a result because they're over halfway through the
04:53year so Huntington's really a turning point for people. Anyone who can get a
04:57result there might be on their way to the championship tour. My whole family is
05:01making huge sacrifices for me to live my dream so I take it really seriously and
05:06it's so important for me to stay focused, do whatever I can to achieve my goal.
05:10Opening rounds for our Challenger Series, this is what we've been waiting for.
05:14I know that I love surfing and I knew that I always wanted to surf and I'm
05:17definitely very competitive even though I try to play off that I'm not. But I
05:23need to work on improving my competition surfing. I'm hoping to use this event to
05:28reset, get my mental game back on track and just feel really good about my
05:32surfing and myself. Mom has always been here with me to encourage me and support
05:37me and now being out here on my own and having a second chance on the
05:41Challenger, I really do want to give it my all and see how far I can take this.
05:45Just hoping for a lot of waves, a lot of opportunities. Both of my parents competed but
05:54they never made it on tour and that's where I'm focused, make it even further than
05:59stated. The US Open is a huge event. There is a bit more pressure. When I was in the
06:05semi-finals in Balito, I hit the rock and then I lost. But the more we get hit, the
06:12more we stand up. So keep going and never stop.
06:28It's crazy that I'm here for a contest and I don't know, it's good to be around you,
06:34like feel peaceful. It's so good to be here. I'm like your number one fan. I always knew
06:38that you were going to be so great because you fully committed like 100%. When you were
06:43a kid, I just remember you surfing all the time. I always gave my time to surfing. You
06:50had the mentality like, if I want to be somebody, I got to do this. That's like very mature of
06:55you. Oh, thank you. And nobody really forced you, right? Like her dad was very like, do
06:58you want to like keep playing soccer and do whatever or do you want to go surfing? And you're
07:01like, no, I want to go surfing. I'm going to. Yes, that was the time that he asked me. Yes,
07:04he was like, okay, you've got to choose between soccer or surfing. Yeah. And you're like, yeah,
07:09it's true. Yeah. But I always say I'm proud of you because I'm very proud. Thank you. Yeah,
07:12yeah. Congratulations. Oh, thank you. How are you? Good. How are you? Good. Thank you.
07:20I'm so happy that you want to come with me. This is so nice. Thank you. What's your name?
07:25Camille. Camille? Yeah. Nice meeting you. Nice meeting you too.
07:29You're starting to surf. Really? Oh, that's so nice. And how old are you? I'm 10. Okay. And when did
07:37you start surfing? By myself, probably just this year. That's amazing because my dad used to push me
07:47in the wave when I was six. And when I was about your age, I started going by myself too. Oh,
07:54that's very cool. That's so nice. Keep going and keep practicing because it's, it's so much fun.
08:02You're going to be a great surfer. I'm, I'm pretty sure she's going to be, yes, the midnight.
08:08That's so important. Can I take a picture of you guys real quick? Yes, of course.
08:14I think surfing is not only surfing. It's way more than that. It's crazy to think that I'm starting to
08:21influence young girls around the world, just like the way I was inspired. Camille, I'll be hearing your
08:26name in surfing. I'm pretty sure. That's my biggest goal, like to inspire other little girls to just be
08:34themselves and go surfing. Even in Brazil, there are not many women, girls surfing. The little there is
08:41just, I hope we inspire them. Okay. Thank you. Nice meeting you. I love the sweetest thing. So cute.
09:01Oh, there's Kika. Look at her. So cute. Wow. I didn't even know we had all these photos. See,
09:17it's good to go through the album. Memory lane for sure. It's great being able to stay with my dad during
09:24the Huntington event. I don't get to see him that often since I live in Portugal and he lives in California,
09:29but we keep in touch. And I even stayed with him for a year when I was in high school.
09:33It's been great all these past years in the sense that, you know, Kika, you've been able to come here
09:38and visit me. You guys were more or less growing up in Portugal. I remember Kika, she was like,
09:43I'm not going to America. I don't want to go to school there. And I kind of had to convince her a
09:48little bit, like, come on, it's going to be a great experience. And then I know that after it all went
09:52down, you were thankful and you were like, dad, that was like one of the best things that ever happened.
09:57Yeah. Then you did all the contests on the weekends and you always did really well.
10:01Huntington Beach had the city surf contest, which is kind of like an iconic event. So Kika was in
10:06the contest in one of her heats. She had this left into the pier and did two huge moves.
10:11Is that a nine or a 10? No, she got a 10 point ride. And then so that was just amazing. You just
10:18like took that contest out. That was kind of cool. And that was sort of like Kika coming into Huntington
10:22Beach. It was a good welcome for her. Like the recognition that she got off of that,
10:27everyone was sort of knowing who she was at that point. Then from there, yeah,
10:31we were trucking around up and down the coast to all the different contests.
10:35I remember Seaside Reef and that's where I won the World Juniors. You're pretty unbeatable.
10:44She's like, yeah.
10:48Veselko on the Challenger Series gets the title and now has her name on one of the most prestigious
10:54lists of surfers ever compiled. So well deserved. Let's watch her do a victory run. Wow.
11:00It's a really special place for me and my family. And it's known for some of the best waves in the
11:16world. I started surfing when I was seven years old. Both of my parents are surfers. My mom was one
11:23of the first Portuguese women's surfers and my dad is an American surfer. He lived in Portugal. And then
11:30when I was nine years old, they divorced and my dad went back to the US. I entered my first surfing
11:37school when I was eight and I started competing when I was nine. I won the World Juniors in 2022.
11:46Best day of my life.
11:48You remember when we did the painting was like right before you got the title, right? They asked
11:53to paint you and some months later you got the title. And this is really cool.
11:58Now my goal is to be the first Portuguese woman to make it on the world tour and be a world champion.
12:03In the water, I'm a super competitive person. Everybody wants to win and be the best. And
12:08everyone has that desire. At least I do. And that's why I compete.
12:12Winning all these contests in Portugal and having the results in the European QSs and feeling good
12:19with my surfing. And then I got on the first year of the Challenger Series and I don't even think I
12:25made one heat. Yeah, I was sad and just frustrated. I just felt nervous and just getting a lot in my head
12:31and figuring it out. Looking back at it, I felt like that was a really good experience because I've
12:37improved a lot since then. And I feel like every year now I feel more comfortable on this tour.
12:44It's hard and there's a lot of up and downs, but mentally I feel strong.
12:58I feel like Huntington is the second home to me. This wave in Huntington, it's pretty challenging
13:14because it's a soft wave and it breaks kind of randomly and you just have to read the wave
13:19and be quick on the board. But I think it's going to be a good event and I'm excited.
13:23I think Kika is an amazing surfer. She's got a really good front hand and a really strong backhand
13:29as well, which you don't always see. She's definitely one to watch.
13:41We got some great action. This is our opening rounds for our Challenger Series.
13:44It's going to be a good start. Kika having a look here. Kaibo, she's up.
13:48Francisca Veselco, a world junior champ.
13:52What a Kika!
13:59Tanaho Suzuki. Good surfing here. Mafalda Lopez tying it all together.
14:06Love it. Love it. She needs to be this way.
14:10Yeah, there's something coming. She gets a big one over there. It's going to be a high score.
14:14Okay, watching red. Here we go. Francisca. She spent a transfer year here as a high school student.
14:20Scored a 10-point ride at the HB Summer Surf Pump in September a few years ago.
14:25So, has a lot of experience at this wave. Suzuki once again right here.
14:29And a nice smooth finish for the Japanese surfer, Nanaho. The 4.93, but that slight improvement
14:36was enough to move Nanaho up into the lead.
14:39And right now, pressure's on Kika. In second place, looking for a 5.04 to move up into first.
14:46I'm stressed out, but she's got a couple scores, but I think she's got to build upon what she's got now.
14:50So, a really competitive heat here. Everybody in that 9, 10-point range.
14:55That's right. It's just a point separating our leader from our fourth place. Just a little over a point.
15:00Second place is our surfer in red.
15:03That's right. Francisca's low is a 4.77. That's the one she wants to better. That last one won't do it.
15:10Here's Ochoa, last wave. Big opportunity. Needs to make it happen.
15:18Forcing it there. And no, don't think that's it.
15:22Wave let her down. That's going to be it for her.
15:24Sure. So, it's going to be Nanaho Suzuki, as well as Francisca Vercelco.
15:30Oh, she made it. Good job.
15:32Yeah, Kika!
15:35That was a stressful heat, in not many ways, and I felt like, oh, what am I doing? Where do I go? I was kind of lost.
15:43By winning the World Junior Championship, I've proven myself that I have the potential to go all the way.
15:49But it's been difficult moving into the top rankings of the Challenger Series.
15:54I know that I have what it takes to get there.
15:56I just need to continue to push myself and keep my head in the game.
16:09So good. How are you doing? Good.
16:20Malou is a good friend of mine from Hawai'i. She's also a fellow competitive surfer. I look up to her,
16:25like my older sister, and she's always there to give me really great advice. So you're here for a reef?
16:31Mm-hmm. It's like a collection of people who are either like surfers or like environmentalists,
16:38like academics, and I'm actually really excited because I think it'll do a lot of help for my research.
16:42Now you're still working on your PT. How is that going?
16:45Yeah, so I'm studying how the health of our coral can help to protect us.
16:50So you're based in Anahola?
16:51Yeah, so I go back and forth between Oahu and Kauai. I get to surf like pretty frequently and...
16:56Nice.
16:57Yeah, with less pressure now, and...
16:59That's fun, enjoying being in the water.
17:03Definitely love surfing. I think that's what sustains me.
17:07Yeah.
17:08I feel really good in free surf.
17:10Yeah.
17:11And then like something switches when I'm in contests, like I get really nervous.
17:16Yeah, I definitely have like performance anxiety, especially when I really need a score.
17:21I don't know how to explain it. Like I just...
17:24Other than I don't feel like myself, or like I'm even in my own body, like I kind of...
17:29Oh, like full dissociate kind of.
17:31Yeah.
17:32Oh, okay. Yeah.
17:33Yeah.
17:34I know. It makes me sad though, that I feel like it's been my goal since I was like five years old,
17:39to be the first Kayapuni grad, Oahu Wa'i female surfer to make it on tour.
17:44So this year has been filled with a whirlwind of emotions. I was really excited at the beginning
17:50of the year, really wanted to compete, and then it wasn't working out, and I just wanted to restart
17:57and reset everything.
17:58When I was in high school, I had such bad social anxiety that like I couldn't even call
18:04and order a pizza on the phone.
18:06I just realized to that.
18:08And one thing I always did when I was having that was like breathing, really helps me come back to center.
18:15Breath work's really important.
18:16Mm-hmm.
18:17Also community, like I realized for me that I struggle when I'm not in my community with like friends,
18:24family, and you're halfway across the world like in Bolido.
18:28Right.
18:28You're like, what am I doing here?
18:30I was definitely homesick in Bolido.
18:31You're so homesick.
18:32It's hard.
18:33It is hard.
18:34But like you're so powerful, and as the waves get bigger and like the mana gets more powerful,
18:41you always rise to match it.
18:42And I think to me that is like one of the coolest, most badass things ever.
18:46My goodness.
18:47And like you draw so much from your aina, so much from like your family, so much from the ocean,
18:53like just like, just unleash it.
18:56Reminding me of where I'm from as well.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Been away from home for so long.
19:01You're beautiful on the outside, on the inside, and you're powerful.
19:04You're making me blush.
19:05Aww.
19:06You can do it.
19:06Yeah.
19:07Just keep trying and keep pushing.
19:08Take that power and be like, ah!
19:13I'm really happy that you're here.
19:15Aww.
19:16I'm so nice to see you.
19:18So nice to see you.
19:23We've got a new heat just starting.
19:34Sol Aguirre from Peru, one to watch out for.
19:39It's so good to see great talent coming out of Peru, and it's good to see Sol coming through,
19:43representing that region.
19:44She's so good when the waves get good.
19:46It's marbling to see how explosive her surfing is.
19:49When I was growing up, surfing wasn't a sport where a lot of women could practice.
20:05So I've always competed against boys, and I think that's why I became so competitive.
20:12I never felt intimidated by men.
20:15I knew I was as strong as them.
20:18The first competition that made me realize that I wanted it was when I was 13.
20:24It was the junior in Brazil, and I competed, and I won.
20:29And if you won that contest, you were South American champion.
20:32But I also see myself as an inspiration for my country.
20:36I'm so proud of being a Peruvian.
20:38Surfing has grown so much in our country because we're bringing so many titles and results.
20:44So it's a lot of nerves and expectations and pressure.
20:49And I'm ready to handle that as much as I can.
20:54Sol is so fun.
20:56Her surfing is incredible.
20:57Like, she's got amazing angles, great speed, and just a unique low.
21:02I love watching her surf.
21:03She has a really good backside, and she's a regular footer.
21:07So she surfs backside to the left, and she's very competitive.
21:12This year, I qualified in Puerto Rico for the Olympics, but not the best result I was hoping for.
21:18So my main goal after the Olympics is have the best result in the Challengers,
21:24be on the top five if I can.
21:26So it's a lot of pressure.
21:31Got a new heat in the round of 48 for the women.
21:36Sol going for it.
21:39Oh, no.
21:41I like the intent, though.
21:44Sarah Baum on the backhand this time.
21:46Oh, that's a beautiful turn off the top.
21:49Two.
21:50That was well, well timed.
21:54This is Sol Aguirre.
21:55She needs to get going to get back into this heat.
21:58Currently needs a 7.5 to get to second place and advance out.
22:07Sol, you still need 7.5 to go up into second place.
22:13Here comes Sol looking down the line.
22:15She's going to throw it up there.
22:16And you can see the frustration, actually, in her body language.
22:22You know, Sol put up a good fight with a couple of fours.
22:27It just didn't work out in their favor.
22:35I don't think I surf good.
22:37Every time I lose, no one can feel as much as I'm feeling right now.
22:42Like, no one can feel what the athlete, the one that competes, feels when they lose.
22:50I'm going to cry if I don't want to cry.
23:02Maybe this is fun.
23:11This is really good.
23:12This is the comp that typically people will take a turn.
23:15Either, like, they're high on the rankings and suddenly they drop, they lose it for the last three events.
23:20Or they're low on the rankings and they can make a bit of a break and they can get themselves even into a re-qualifying position.
23:26So I do have to kind of adjust.
23:29That's exactly it.
23:30So you're going to have to learn to surf and change and adjust.
23:33You're very selective.
23:34So you'll go for a really nice wave like that or a peak or a peak like that.
23:37And you won't really take a wave that is not the best wave to surf.
23:41Unfortunately in a heat like this, you might not get anything but average to poorer waves.
23:47And you've got to learn to score on it.
23:49It's a level of, like, desperation, aggression.
23:55Having my dad is really good because I crave the training and the mission
23:58and having him there to work things out is so helpful.
24:02I love it.
24:03What do you want to work on?
24:04Because I've got some ideas but I want to hear what your thoughts are.
24:07My dad's been my coach for so many years and we work together so well.
24:12My mum has to stay back in Australia, hold down the fort and earn the money.
24:16My parents have to chip in and support me because they know this is where I should be.
24:20Part of my job here is to, part of my heart is to just, you know, make sure you're okay.
24:26Because I worry about you.
24:28I want you to compete well because you want to compete.
24:31And I want you to surf well because you want to surf well.
24:34And if that makes you happy, we make you happy.
24:37We're on tomorrow.
24:46We're on tomorrow.
24:50Yeah.
24:51How many times have you ridden this board?
24:53Three times.
24:54This one I have really good paddle power.
24:57I take it to Brazil and it worked really well there.
24:59Yeah.
24:59And you get that like initial glide in.
25:01Yeah.
25:01I like your self-belief on that board.
25:04I felt really confident on it.
25:05Yeah.
25:06I've been with Channel Island for just over a year and they're the new board sponsor that I'm riding for.
25:12Definitely one of the perks about being with Channel Island is that Brent's there as the global team
25:17manager.
25:18I love him.
25:19I feel like he understands me and I think that's really important when you're working with a coach.
25:23We'll break it down, make it real simple.
25:26There's certain pivotal parts in the heat that like will make a heat.
25:30Right.
25:31If you hear you need a score, just break down in your mind what that score is based off what you've done.
25:37You know, if you've done one big turn and then you fell and you still got like a four,
25:40you're like, okay.
25:42Two of them.
25:43Two of those will get me over the line.
25:45Yeah.
25:45If you can win that moment and just push through to the next little part,
25:50rather than thinking of it as a whole, you're just doing what's in front of you,
25:53that will help you get through and just be you really knowing that you can win this thing.
26:00Yeah.
26:00Because you can.
26:04I feel like I get like really stressed out and I get overwhelmed when I'm in heat because I am thinking
26:09about the bigger picture and getting too far ahead of myself.
26:13A lot of time if you go out and you have like a preconceived idea of how you want to do it,
26:17it doesn't go the way you want to go and it starts unraveling and you freak out and you lose.
26:22But if you kind of go out knowing that the ocean's constantly moving and tides changing and people
26:27are moving around and you've just got to go with them and kind of stay in the moment and win the
26:31little moments that you're in, those little things will add up and at the end of the heat you'll be first.
26:37I think that Ewe can make it to the CT.
26:39I know that she can do it.
26:41I just need her to understand that she can do it, which is sometimes the hardest part,
26:46but she has such a special gift and she needs to understand that she can do that.
26:51She can win.
26:53It's all up to her.
26:55What's your goal here?
26:56To make it past the second heat.
26:59Don't you want to push it a little further?
27:00Yes, I would like to make it farther than the second heat, but...
27:04Because if you really want to, like, put a dent in this and go up the ratings higher, like,
27:10I think you've got to stop aiming at your toes and look a little further.
27:16Manifest.
27:16Manifest.
27:17Exactly.
27:34The conditions are always really tricky at this break, because it's such a weak wave.
27:38You've got to kind of change up what kind of turns you do and make sure that you're not thinking two out of one turn,
27:43but you're remembering that they could be three or they could be two turns and you're linked together.
27:48Listen, they're nice wives coming through, so that wife stood up really nice.
27:52It's been a fun day of surfing so far, but guess what?
27:55We still have more action up ahead.
27:56Ewe Wong out there in the red.
27:58Ewe from Hawaii. What a talent. What a young, next-generation level surfer.
28:04Her competitive savvy is getting better and better every single event.
28:07We know she has the skills to do it, and it'll be exciting to see in these next couple of years
28:12and contests how she puts that all together for herself.
28:15Okay, babe. Come on, Ewe.
28:19I feel good. I'm excited. First heat's always, like, pretty nervous, but I'm used to it at this point.
28:26Okay. So now we pray for waves. God will go to church someday. We'll do anything.
28:35Ewe is up and riding. Yeah, Wong going right. Solid carve right there in the pocket for Ewe.
28:40Looking for one more section down the line. She's going to find it.
28:43Throws a tail around. Nice timed approach there. Not bad.
28:49Suzuki draws off of the bottom well. Big snap in the pocket and fits in three consecutive maneuvers
28:55right there. So should be a strong score right there for Suzuki.
28:59Now we're waiting for Jesse van Niekerk to get her first wave.
29:07Not much on offer right there from van Niekerk.
29:09And then now up and riding. Quick one right there.
29:17Currently it's green first, blue second. Red needs a 3.85. White needs a 5.31.
29:23I think Jess, um, maybe missed a wave or two she should have gone with.
29:28Well, watch this one.
29:29White paddle into this one right here. A little right hand slingshot. Let's see what she can do.
29:33Jessie, first turn. She's going to get back out on the open face. Nope, she'll kick out.
29:37Not good.
29:39White, Jessie, you are in fourth. You need a 5.31.
29:44She just needs a single wave. Five, not a high score.
29:48She just needs to get in the way. She's sitting on the feet.
29:54It's Evan Wong now up to second click. Her last score comes in as a 3.87. It was just enough
30:00for second place. Good score for that wave. Stay busy, kid.
30:04Suzuki up and riding. Needs a 3.3. That's a good start to the wave right here.
30:09The one carve. A little setup. And make sure just to finish this wave off.
30:14It's going to be close, but it seems like she might have done just enough.
30:17Situation changed. Blue has gone to second. Red drops to our third position.
30:22Nebe, you need a 4.38. White, you're in fourth. You need a 5.84.
30:28One minute remaining, ladies. It's just not a mistake.
30:31Should have gone for that wave. It's a chance. Everyone stays out there at the moment.
30:36Okay, come on, Evan. Go, go, go, go, go.
30:39Five, four, three, two, one. So, Evan Wong and Jessie Van Niekerk
30:46are eliminated from competition here in the round of 48.
30:51Bad heat. Tough heat.
30:53It's the first time she's knocked out in round one this season. She looks bummed.
31:00I think this is, like, the hardest loss of the year so far, just because this is the first event
31:05that I lost the first heat, so that definitely adds to the frustration. But I've gotten some great
31:10advice here in Hennington from Malou and Brent that I think paid off because I just feel like I'm losing
31:16better, if that makes sense. I feel like I performed to the best of my ability for those circumstances,
31:23so I'm just comfortable with that, that I was able to surf like myself.
31:29Sorry about me. I'm so sorry.
31:33Being on the road this much is a major sacrifice. My parents were so committed to giving us
31:39opportunities. We didn't have sponsors growing up. Our parents paid every cent to take us to cops.
31:45It's just sacrifice, sacrifice. So there's always pressure. Never happy to lose a heap, but we are on a long road, long journey.
31:59What do you say, my love?
32:09Nothing.
32:10Smile, smile change off.
32:15It heals us. It heals. We heal.
32:18I'm tired of crying because I cry so much.
32:20Because sometimes you are a little hard, you, on you.
32:23But it's difficult. It's just not for you. You know, it's like for all the athletes.
32:32All of you make the best effort you can. And it's just one person who wins.
32:38Tranquila, pues.
32:44No llores.
32:46I think it's expectation of myself. And I don't think I served good in the Olympics and not in South Africa.
32:53And not now. Like I'm trying, but it's not working. It takes a lot, I know. It's not that easy.
33:04Yeah. You're 21. Just 21.
33:08Life goes on and you can keep moving. You see before. It comes. Sometimes takes more time, but it comes.
33:16It comes. We love you and it doesn't matter your results, you know. You are a great daughter, confident,
33:24and no more dealing with what happened, no? Keep going.
33:28I'm fine. Salud.
33:35Cheers and no fears.
33:36Un abracito.
33:38Un abracito.
33:53How's your back been since you got injured on the rocks in Burrito?
33:56I've been getting better. We weren't sure what was happening. And so the x-ray was clean.
34:02Oh, I'm glad you didn't break anything.
34:04Yeah. So how was the training here, like, at Huntington?
34:08My first round was for everybody. We surfed straight on the second.
34:11Yeah. And actually, since I passed my meet in second,
34:14we're going to be surfed together. So that's going to be an interesting one.
34:18Like, friends, while we say it in Portuguese, it's weird in English,
34:22but it's like friends' friends wave apart.
34:23Yes. So, like, everybody can be friends and stuff,
34:26but when you're in the water, it's just, like, it's your moment,
34:29and this is why we work so much. It's towards that moment.
34:33We all, like, work separately to be at that moment,
34:36and it's very individual sport, and, like, you got to focus on your own.
34:40Even though we're friends, and in the water, we're going to do everything possible
34:43to go through the heat, you know?
34:45Yeah. It's going to be fun.
34:46Yeah. And there's going to be some swell, so...
34:49Waves are going to pick up a lot.
34:51So, be ready to paddle for your life.
34:53We're all going to be ready.
34:57See you in the heat. See you in the heat.
35:00Let's have fun. Hopefully, we both make it.
35:02Yes. Let's hope for that.
35:04Yeah.
35:12Follow your instinct.
35:13Your instinct never gets wrong, okay?
35:15Don't think too much.
35:17Okay? Simple.
35:18The shit are simple.
35:20Let's go.
35:20Don't think too much about doing the things that it should be.
35:22Let's go.
35:23Let's go.
35:28All right. Heat number four has started.
35:32Franziska Veselko.
35:34Nice draw off the bottom, and going for the combination.
35:38She'll get lost on the closeout.
35:42Sofia Medina. Whoa, what a cool backside snap that was.
35:46Aaron Brooks rolling in.
35:55She likes to go as fast as she can.
35:59Lights up the first section with a big first turn and shuts it down.
36:02How cool was that combo?
36:05Aaron Brooks just earned a 6.33 to build her lead out front.
36:10Veselko right behind her in second.
36:12Blue, here we go.
36:18Sofia Medina.
36:19Oh, that was nice.
36:24Okay, so Sofia's gonna move on to second.
36:26Sofia did get the jump into second on that right.
36:29She got a 5.17.
36:31Veselko now needs a 5.8 to go back into the top two.
36:35I'm just hoping that Kika gets this clear opportunity to score,
36:39because she doesn't have anything good on the scoreboard.
36:48Looking now is Franziska Veselko.
36:51Gets through her first turn off the top.
36:52A little whip on the softer shoulder.
36:55Scores from Franziska Veselko.
36:582.5 on her way previous.
37:00But that kepper in third.
37:01Sofia still hanging on to second.
37:03Let's go, Kika.
37:05Time to shine.
37:06Franziska looking to answer back.
37:09Here she goes.
37:11We'll see what the judges think about that.
37:14Score in.
37:14A five-point ride.
37:16It was not enough.
37:17Go, Kika.
37:22Oh, yeah.
37:24Go, yeah, yeah.
37:24There you go.
37:30That's the right to appear.
37:32I didn't know if I could see them.
37:35You thought you were going in.
37:36You would have to find it.
37:37I didn't know why.
37:37I don't know if I could give them.
37:38That's the right to be able to understand.
37:40Well, that concludes the number four.
37:44Just one little score to come in for Aaron.
37:47We couldn't change anything.
37:51Aaron has a quick start with two medium-sized left, and then...
38:03Chica is one friend that, like, it's just hard to go against a friend.
38:08It's hard.
38:09It's hard to go.
38:11I didn't get back.
38:13I didn't get back.
38:14I didn't get back.
38:15I didn't get back.
38:16I didn't get back.
38:17I think.
38:18But that's it.
38:19Continue.
38:20You can't go.
38:22I know how it feels to lose, you know?
38:24It's very hard.
38:25And you don't want that for a friend that you really consider.
38:40Call mum still.
38:42Let's wait.
38:43Let's get some sandwiches and stuff, and then phone mum.
38:46Okay.
38:47Happy to get in the water now.
38:49Afterwards.
38:50Um, yeah, I'll call mum.
38:51Yeah, I'll call mum.
38:52Yeah, I'm ready for another surf, probably.
38:54Let alone energy.
38:57Yeah.
38:58Hi, mum.
38:59Hello.
39:00How are you?
39:01By the way, this is our 28th, 28th anniversary.
39:05Happy anniversary.
39:06I think that's really funny.
39:10So Jess has got a bombshell.
39:12I'm looking at that flight, eyeing down that flight to come back home for the three weeks
39:17before Portugal.
39:18I know you like the idea.
39:21One way home, and then I will reset at home, then go to Portugal.
39:27I think Jess's instincts are usually spot on, Ian.
39:30So I think she'll be able to kind of slot straight into the routine of being home,
39:36not having to worry about food, not having to worry about washing.
39:40She can get solid, solid sleep in her own bed.
39:43And I agree with everything you say.
39:45I think this is very good for Jess.
39:49My family is so close, and we're always, like, talking.
39:52We're always working on things.
39:54So we need to be together.
39:56That is the goal, to have us all on tour.
39:58But we know this is part of the process, and it's already a huge privilege that I get
40:02to do this because it's expensive.
40:05It's all family commitment.
40:07But ultimately, we want to all be on the road together.
40:10Okay, Mom, back with you before you know it.
40:13I can't wait.
40:14Okay.
40:15I love you, Mom.
40:16We'll speak soon.
40:17Enjoy your sleep.
40:18Have you.
40:19Hopefully speak to you before I go to bed.
40:20Bye.
40:21Bye.
40:22Bye.
40:23Bye.
40:24Bye.
40:25Bye.
40:26Bye.
40:27Bye.
40:28Bye.
40:29Bye.
40:30Bye.
40:31Bye.
40:32Bye.
40:33Okay, so let's organize the next post that you have to do for your sponsors.
40:38So right now, our sponsor is Vivo, Mainterra, Petrobras.
40:43Yes.
40:44Nescau, Ocean Drop, Dove.
40:47Ripco.
40:48Ripco.
40:49The surfboards.
40:51I think now we are pretty good.
40:54I have to give social media posts for Dove.
40:57Okay, this is the briefing.
41:00What they want to show is like your beach lifestyle.
41:04Yes.
41:05So I think we'll be very nice.
41:07You need a sponsor when you are in surfing.
41:10And you have to have support to pay your travels.
41:13And when you subscribe to a contest, you gotta pay.
41:16So if you do a good result, you get a good amount just to afford your travels.
41:22So surfing is an individual sport, but you need people around you.
41:27It's a fun journey.
41:28I like it.
41:29Yeah.
41:30Yeah, I like it too.
41:31This life is amazing.
41:33Perfect.
41:36Words serve.
41:37Yeah.
41:38Do you want to taste?
41:39Can you feel what I need?
41:46Round of 16 action this afternoon.
41:48A little bit of breeze, but still rippable out there.
41:51After the second round, it's just head-to-head hits.
41:55Woman-to-woman.
41:56If you win, you win.
41:57And if you lose, you lose.
41:58You're out of the contest.
42:00Sophia Medina.
42:01Wow, what a talent.
42:02What a last name.
42:03Truly one of the most up-and-coming, next-generation women that I'm certainly interested to see how
42:07high she goes.
42:09We all know about the success that her brother has had.
42:11And now it's time for her to take that and translate that and be inspired.
42:15Her name has really come up quite a bit in these last couple of years, and I'm excited to see where she goes next.
42:22Introducing in the water, Tessa Tyson in red and Sophia Medina in blue.
42:30Blue, Sophia.
42:31Nice.
42:32It looks small, but she's being really patient, waiting for it to wall up.
42:37She really wants to find that energy source.
42:39Little roll-in opportunity for Tessa Tyson for France.
42:43I love how cool she just rips right into the pocket, leans on that toe-side edge and always fades back down to the wedge and keeps her speed up.
43:04Red, your score came in at a 5.33.
43:14It was enough.
43:15So Red in the lead.
43:17So that means Sophia in the second position.
43:20So now, Sophia, you need a 7.66.
43:24How about four?
43:25Wow.
43:26Little drop-wall and lay-back carve.
43:28Woo!
43:29This one, I like how she's extending the bottom turn, finds the power source.
43:33Wow, that's a beauty.
43:35Woo!
43:36Woo!
43:37Woo!
43:38Woo!
43:39Woo!
43:40Woo!
43:41Wraps it back a bunch.
43:42She needs a 7.66.
43:44But what that's going to do is possibly increase on her low of a four.
43:49And a fired up Charlie Medina.
43:52Last of blue, a 6.83.
43:55So that is her best.
43:57And now, Sophia, you're looking for a 4.83 to get into first.
44:02This is Medina out on the face, carves it back.
44:09Banks it off that whitewater.
44:12Judges definitely taking their time.
44:17Medina's not waiting for the outcome.
44:19She's going to keep on swinging.
44:21Sophia Medina turns it, gets a 5.17 and she needed a 4.86.
44:25Sophia in the lead.
44:27Tessa, you need a 5.68.
44:31And the celebration already beginning for Sophia's support crew.
44:36Great sports moment here as they both talk it over.
44:40Even though it was a close battle, giving each other a lot of props.
44:44Scores coming in for Tessa.
44:47Not enough.
44:48Sophia Medina gets a big win and will compete on finals day tomorrow.
44:53Now I'm going to the Carter finals.
45:00I can't believe it.
45:02That was incredible to leave.
45:03Like it was such a good experience.
45:04It was just amazing.
45:05So that's my second time going to the finals day and it's in a row.
45:09So I'm just glad I could keep this momentum.
45:11Let's just try to keep going.
45:32Let's just try to keep going.
45:34Welcome back to finals day here in Huntington Beach, California.
45:53Sophia Medina taking on Sally Fitzgibbons.
45:55Sally is one of the best surfers in the world.
45:58To be the best, you got to beat the best.
45:59So it's a huge hit.
46:02Looking forward to our next stop in Portugal.
46:04I'm excited to be going home.
46:06I know these waves.
46:07I know this break.
46:08I have a home court advantage and I'm planning on using it.
46:12Because it's my home, I feel like I have more eyes on me.
46:15So the pressure is on to win.
46:17I'm taking what I learned from Huntington and I'm excited to apply it to my performance in Portugal.
46:23And it'll be nice having mom and tutu there to help me feel more comfortable and connected to my roots.
46:29And help me feel more like myself when I'm serving these teats.
46:32Incredible.
46:33Stack teat.
46:34Wong.
46:35Oh, that's a great turn.
46:36Oh, got it girl.
46:37Go, go, go.
46:38Go, go, go.
46:40Go, go.
46:44I'm going home.
46:46You got it girl.
46:47Go, come, go, go.
46:53Go, go, go.
