00:00Jacksonville is the last event of our qualifying series. That's where it's
00:17gonna determine who is qualifying for the Challenger Series. Florida will
00:21determine for me if I get to go to that next level. There's a lot of points at
00:26stake in this competition. You kind of have to be 100% laser focused. It's
00:32make or break time. Hurricane Nicole has just slammed the southeast coast of
00:37Florida. This category one storm is packing 75 mile per hour winds and the
00:42storm surge punch is being felt all the way up here in Jacksonville. This is
00:48like the first real hurricane I've ever been in. I think out of every surf
00:55contest I've ever done. This is the first one that's like been such gnarly
00:58storm conditions. Is the hurricane supposed to get worse? Sure. Yep. I don't think this
01:04contest should happen.
01:25Hey Paul. How's it going? Good. Have you been to Jacksonville? I have. Every time I've been there, the
01:34surf's really, really, really small and really, really, really weak. I struggled at sunset. That's kind of the thing that
01:42always haunts me. I have to be like, okay, we lost at that contest. We're going to do
01:47better at the next contest. I just never been to Florida or anywhere like near
01:50Florida before. So I have no idea like what to expect. Well, it's different. That's for sure.
01:56A lot is at stake. I want to win that contest because I want to be the number one surfer in the world.
02:04I always have like a dream. Like I'm in the contest and there's like no waves. I have this nightmare
02:20kind of a lot. Do you know where the smallest word bag is? The smallest one is right there. Okay.
02:25I met my husband when I was 18 years old. I noticed Moana getting the sickest barrel ever seen.
02:36It was just love at first sight for sure. I got married when I was 21 years old. I was so young
02:46when I got married. I was a little kid in my eyes looking back at it. But he's my best friend. He's
02:53my biggest supporter, my biggest fan. Like I can't imagine my life without him. This contest is
03:01different because I'm going to be traveling without totu for the first time. And I'm going to be going
03:06with one of my best friends, Maluhia. And we're going to be meeting up with another surfer girl from
03:10Hawaii named Brianna Cote.
03:11I love it here because it brings back all the memories of me growing up surfing.
03:24Hawaii is such a small community. Everyone knows everyone. Just surfing with the same people,
03:31pushing each other. Such a special place.
03:33So the reason I started surfing is my sister. As a younger kid, like you want to do everything the
03:41older sister does. And just watching her and wanting to be better than her. So I'm really
03:45glad that we had a competitive drive. And as you can see, she's here on the wall. I am the only
03:51pro surfer in the family and there's not one surfing photo. Just my sister. You know, Brianna wasn't
03:56always good. Maybe there wasn't good ones on the film, you know, at that time.
04:01My sister would humble me real quick, even though I thought I would be really good. She'd be like,
04:04no, you have so much to learn. I had a really successful junior career. I was number one Hawaii,
04:10but I always wanted to have my own path of what I was doing and not be like anyone else.
04:14And maybe that's like stems from being different as a child.
04:18Brianna was born with all five fingers, but the two fingers were really small.
04:23She was bullied as a child, but I think because of that, it made her a tough cookie.
04:29When I started surfing, it was the only time no one would ask me about my hand.
04:32I can be who I am and feel whole as a person. That just stuck with me my whole career.
04:39My first year on the Challenger Series, I made the final. I felt like ever since then,
04:43I've been like climbing up this stair ladder of like how to keep competing to be on the tour.
04:48This is my career. And why not put the foot on the gas?
04:53Yeah, buddy, we cut your boards.
04:59Ooh, there's a 5-7 that I'm super excited about.
05:02Grab it. You can grab it. Grab it.
05:04Any individual competing at a high level, you have to have a really good team around you.
05:10You definitely have to have a really good relationship with your board shaper.
05:13I don't really know how many boards I've done for Malu.
05:16Right now, we have four boards going through, and we're working on our short boards.
05:20How was the 5-9?
05:25It's definitely meant for like waves with power.
05:27Like in the intermittent phases between turns, sometimes it feels a little...
05:31Sluggish.
05:32Yeah.
05:32What we're going to do is we're going to add a little concave in the bottom.
05:35I love working with Carl because it combines my passions for surfing and my passions for engineering.
05:42Just keep in mind that the surf you rode that was like terrible for our conditions yesterday would be an epic day in Florida.
05:49In Florida.
05:49It is a whole different beast.
05:51Yeah.
05:51So the Supergirl Pro in Florida is the last event for the season on the QS.
05:58That contest will have more pressure because it's worth more points.
06:01I'm super close.
06:03I'm right on the bubble.
06:04So it will determine if I get to go to the Challenger Series.
06:07It's like the weight of the world gets heavier, heavier than every day.
06:13This one's coming for sure.
06:19And then this one will be one of my boards that I take because it's smaller.
06:24It's a challenge because finding that magic board is not easy.
06:28And then when you find the magic board, that's all you want to ride.
06:30But then the magic board just gets trashed.
06:34This is the magic board.
06:37With my dad winning a world title, the pressure is all on me to carry the surfing legacy.
06:41I don't know.
06:43There's only one reason to paddle out, right?
06:46To win.
06:47Yeah.
06:48Otherwise, why paddle out in the heat?
06:50It doesn't make any sense.
06:52To have fun.
06:54Winning is fun.
06:56My dad's hard on me because he kind of knows what it takes.
06:59And he did it on his own.
07:02He did it figuring it out the hard way.
07:05I think I just overthink heat in general.
07:08There's going to be a point where you're paddling out and it's going to be rare that you lose.
07:11I was swimming and surfing before I could really walk.
07:19My earliest memories of surfing were being at Waikiki and racing across the lagoon.
07:26Those are some of my funnest memories.
07:28When I was about 11, I sat my parents down and I was like, I want to be a professional surfer.
07:33I was a professional surfer for, I don't know, nearly 30 years.
07:39So I understood that that lifestyle is sort of a roller coaster.
07:43So I said, if we tell you to practice for six hours, you know, you need to put in your time and you need to be committed.
07:49And she had no problem committing to that.
07:52How was it?
07:54Big.
07:55Through that, I've been able to win nine national titles in 2018.
08:01I was the Water Woman of the Year.
08:03I'm from Waianae.
08:08People look at Waianae as like a really bad place.
08:11Like, don't go to Waianae.
08:12It's scary or, you know, there's drugs or there's a shooting.
08:16But it's like also one of the most beautiful places with so much rich culture.
08:21There's eight kids from ages three to 24.
08:32So there's, there's a lot of us.
08:36My parents' standards are high.
08:39When I compete, it's like I'm carrying just the whole family tree.
08:44It's a powerful, powerful, powerful thing.
08:51My whole life, I've gone to Hawaiian Immersion School.
09:05There's a Hawaiian proverb, which is,
09:10which means the language is the heart of the people.
09:14And when you take away the language, it very much affects our lahue, our nation, in a negative way.
09:21Immersion required the kids to sacrifice Abe's peers and surf in the morning before school
09:32because their school is right down the street or if they are homeschooled.
09:35That was never a choice we were going to make.
09:41I'm here with Airy and we're driving.
09:44We're driving to the TNC factory.
09:46We're going to show this view, bro.
09:47Okay, okay, okay.
09:49Okay, we're going to hold our breath going through the tunnel.
09:52Take your last breaths.
10:02Florida is our last contest of the season, right?
10:05For the QS.
10:07Yeah.
10:08Are you excited to go with me?
10:10Mm-hmm.
10:11I've never been anywhere without my mommy.
10:15That's crazy.
10:15It's me.
10:16If it was anybody, it would be you.
10:19Oh.
10:20Yeah.
10:20My mom trusts you.
10:21Okay.
10:22That's nice.
10:25Usually my parents come with me to like every competition,
10:30but I'm going by myself to Florida
10:32because I want the independence
10:36and I want that experience.
10:39Do you think I'm going to be worried?
10:41Yes.
10:42And that's why you'll have to check in regularly.
10:46Check out.
10:47I guess I can do that.
10:48Thank you very much.
10:50What are you hoping to get out of the Florida contest?
10:52Just like improving my competitive surfing.
10:56I mean, you did that in this last heat you had.
10:59Yeah.
10:59So you're learning.
11:03Everybody knows what a great,
11:05what an awesome surfer you are.
11:07Yeah?
11:08Yeah.
11:08But there's a whole other side of you that is important.
11:13You know, you are a representative of the Lahu'i
11:15and there are younger, not just surfers,
11:21but kids who, you know, you are a role model for.
11:26I'm proud of you.
11:38We just checked in.
11:41Stop.
11:43Okay, we just checked in.
11:45And how do we feel?
11:47I'm feeling sweaty right now.
11:49I'm feeling great.
11:50I got some new shoes.
11:51I'm heading to Florida for the Jacksonville Pump.
11:55I'm excited.
11:57I'm going by myself right now,
11:58and my dad's going to meet me up there.
12:00Yay!
12:01All we want is everything.
12:05We're the ones who run this town.
12:08We're the rulers of this place.
12:11We are the kings and queens.
12:13The world belongs to us.
12:17What time is it?
12:196 a.m.
12:19It's 2 a.m. Hawaii time.
12:27We are in Jacksonville,
12:29but they don't know where my boards are.
12:33We're currently waiting for our boards.
12:34I see them, actually.
12:37Oh, okay.
12:40Okay, this is yours.
12:41Yeah.
12:41How was the flight, Malu?
12:44Um, it was gnarly.
12:46On one side of me, there was, like, two cats
12:49that for some reason weren't sedated.
12:52And on the other side of me, there was a baby
12:54that, uh, was screaming louder and higher pitch than Mariah Carey.
12:59There was a baby screaming louder than Mariah Carey.
13:02But we made it.
13:05We're here.
13:07The world's top professional female surfers
13:10have arrived in Jacksonville,
13:12but early this morning, Hurricane Nicole
13:14made landfall just 200 miles away,
13:17bringing 75-mile-per-hour winds and dangerous waves.
13:21What is this hurricane thing?
13:23I think it's Hurricane Nicole, yeah.
13:25When we were eating our breakfast this morning
13:27and it told us that it's directly hitting us,
13:30and we were like, oh, that's awesome.
13:32And then the TV just says red.
13:34Jacksonville, and Jacksonville, like, ooh.
13:37I just don't want to wake up without a roof.
13:40That's all I care about.
13:41Like, imagine waking up and, like, you open your eyes
13:43and it's just the sky.
13:45Like, that's terrifying.
13:47Yeah.
13:49My mom just texted me, are you alive?
13:52And I said, yeah.
13:53Oh, that's nice.
13:55And then I said, hurricane, and she said, don't die.
13:58What about your mom?
14:00She asked me if I'm scared of the hurricane,
14:02and I said, no.
14:03Actually, my mom told me to stock up on water.
14:07Which we did.
14:08Which we did, yes.
14:09But hopefully they do run the contest.
14:12Yeah, they have to.
14:13Because this is our last contest
14:15for the Hawaiian region season.
14:18My goal for this competition
14:20is to do as best that I can.
14:23Mine is just to make it out there.
14:25Just heat by heat, guys.
14:27Exactly.
14:27I'm second on the rankings right now.
14:43Not third?
14:44Second.
14:45Oh, wow.
14:46After sunset, I went up.
14:49Okay, you got this.
14:51It's going to be wave selection, huh?
14:53For sure.
14:54It's going to be small and grindy,
14:55but still fun.
14:58You got to do what you got to do.
15:02I'm in second right now.
15:03Moana's currently in first.
15:05So I'd probably need, like,
15:06a thousand points at least
15:07to overtake first.
15:09If I win this event,
15:12I'd probably lead our region.
15:13And so I just want to focus on the heats
15:18and just, like, showcase my best surfing.
15:22I think in every contest,
15:24like, one of my goals
15:25is just to start the wave strong
15:26and finish the wave strong.
15:27Here, it's going to be a lot of one-turners.
15:29So, you know, pushing that one turn,
15:31but landing it and completing it.
15:33And then if I'm able to find those two wave turns
15:37to three wave turns,
15:38like, really using that opportunity.
15:39Cupid simple, another Cupid.
15:42I write Cupid simple, like,
15:43four times on the paper.
15:54Is this the farthest
15:55you've ever been away from home?
15:56Mm-hmm.
15:57Wow.
15:57What?
15:58Yeah, can you...
15:59This is the farthest she's ever been.
16:00Have you ever flown along?
16:02No.
16:03I'm, like, so scared to do that.
16:05Why?
16:05I don't know.
16:07I just don't want to be by myself.
16:08I'm scared somebody might snatch me.
16:10Oh, my...
16:12I think whoever would try to snatch you
16:15would deeply regret the decision
16:16of trying to snatch you.
16:18You would absolutely just wreck them.
16:25Now that we've traveled together
16:27this one time for Florida,
16:28if you guys don't travel with me,
16:30like, every single time after this,
16:31I'm going to be kind of disappointed.
16:33I think surfing creates this bond
16:38with everyone.
16:39We all have that mutual respect
16:41of we're all friends on the land,
16:42but, like, as soon as we are in the water,
16:45we're kind of all here to do our job.
16:49Brianna is a very high-spirited person.
16:51Like, Brianna feels her emotions
16:53all the time.
16:54And that's part of why I love Brianna,
16:56because you're always going to get
16:58exactly what she gives you.
17:00I've known Brianna
17:00since I was, like, eight years old.
17:02We have the same sense of humor,
17:04so we get along really well.
17:07Wait, what was that?
17:09Brianna keeps dropping things over there.
17:10I have a little hand, okay?
17:12Are you kidding me?
17:14I know you're like...
17:16I literally didn't notice that
17:20until, like, last year,
17:22that your hand was different
17:24from the other hand.
17:24Because when you're a kid,
17:25you don't, like, really pay attention
17:27to, like, the way people look.
17:29I think you only do
17:30if you're, like, a kid that's...
17:32Mean.
17:32Mean, yeah.
17:33And I was never a mean kid.
17:34I would, like, come up to you guys,
17:35like, hey, guys, what's up?
17:37You guys want to surf with me?
17:38Hey, guys, you're still like...
17:40Hey, guys, guess what?
17:46Hey, guys, guess what?
17:47I just got a text.
17:48Looks like the hurricane
17:49is passing tonight
17:50and the competition
17:51is on for Saturday.
17:52What?
17:53Hang on.
17:54The heat draw just...
17:55The heat draw just came out.
17:56The heat draw just came out.
17:57I just saw that.
17:57The heat draw.
17:58That's always, like,
18:00the most exciting thing,
18:01but, like, also a little bit
18:02of butterflies.
18:02It's, like, pretty butterfly moments.
18:04I'm heat 15.
18:06For sure.
18:07Moana's heat 5.
18:08I'm heat 5.
18:10Mmm...
18:10Maluhio.
18:12Oh, you're heat 14.
18:13Right before you?
18:14Yeah.
18:15I think the food's done, guys.
18:16Oh.
18:17Thanks, Mom.
18:18Yeah, no worries.
18:19What do you think
18:20Evan and Pua guys
18:21are doing right now?
18:22Sparing them.
18:22Raging.
18:23And we just ordered pizza.
18:27Look at how beautiful that is.
18:28Oh.
18:30I keep digging.
18:32I keep digging.
18:33I keep digging down.
18:35I need some help.
18:37I need some help.
18:38Somebody help me out.
18:44So, I think we're gonna head back down
18:46to the contest site.
18:47Mm-hmm.
18:48Analyze the conditions.
18:50It's the day after the hurricane.
18:51The waves are safe right now.
18:53We're gonna practice.
18:54Mola's all ready.
18:56I'm all ready.
18:57I feel pretty excited to practice.
18:59But, oh my God.
19:04Love ya.
19:05Love ya.
19:06We ran out there and then immediately I did a bottom turn
19:24and then did a top turn into the lip.
19:26My foot slipped off the back of my pad
19:29and my leg kind of, like, hyperextended really forcefully
19:33into a strange position.
19:34It just clicked my kneecap right out.
19:39Oh my God.
19:40Did my kneecap just dislocate?
19:42And then it was just extremely painful.
19:44I was in the water.
19:47I felt it go out.
19:48I grabbed my leg and my kneecap
19:51and I just, like, yanked it back in as hard as I could
19:54because that's what I had seen people do.
19:57And it popped back in.
19:58Welcome to the U.S. Air Force Supergirl Surf Pro
20:12here in Jacksonville Beach.
20:15These surfers right now are competing
20:16for the 2023 Challenger Series.
20:18An event like this is gonna put girls on tour.
20:21Going from Hawaii, West Coast, coming to the East Coast,
20:24you really have to adapt your surfing and your strategy
20:26to smaller waves, less power.
20:28This is the whole idea of the process
20:29of going through qualifying series to Challenger to the CT
20:31is you have to be able to do it all.
20:33It just shows that the best servers in the world
20:35are where they're supposed to be.
20:44Winning this event would mean a lot
20:47and it's at 3,000 so, I mean, my points would go up a lot
20:51and I'd lead our region,
20:53but it's a lot of heats I have to get through before that.
20:58You're ready to be running for the life
20:59that you dreamed as a Q.
21:00I came all the way to Florida for this event to win.
21:02Came here for the points,
21:03qualified for next year's Challenger Series,
21:05but overall, I'm not even focused on that.
21:07I'm focused on winning this contest.
21:10This contest is different from other contests
21:12because we've never surfed this way before.
21:15I'm rated number one on the QS,
21:17so I have to do really good to keep my position.
21:21Ladies and gentlemen,
21:22the U.S. Air Force Supergirl Pro Jacksonville Beach, Florida
21:26is underway.
21:27Hi, hi, hi, hi.
21:31Yeah, so I got injured yesterday
21:35and I have to pull out of the contest,
21:37so I just don't know
21:38because people just told me to ask
21:39what I should do insurance-wise.
21:42Yeah.
21:43Oh, hey, Pua.
21:43Hello.
21:44Yeah.
21:46I dislocated my knee yesterday.
21:48What?
21:49I know, it's messed up.
21:50You come all the way over here
21:56and you, like, practice and put in all the work
22:00and then instead of getting to go surf your heat,
22:04you have to go just figure out
22:06if you're going to need surgery
22:07and going to even be able to surf again.
22:10Like, it's pretty hard.
22:16Are you okay if we take off the ASAP
22:18so that I can look at it?
22:19Okay.
22:19Go for it.
22:22Are you staying out of the water for the weekend?
22:24Three minutes remaining.
22:25Three minutes remaining.
22:26So, I mean, nothing is broken broken.
22:29You are going to want to get an MRI
22:30specifically because there is the ligament right here
22:33that it probably is completely torn.
22:36I'm sorry.
22:37I'm making you go.
22:38I was just, like, a little concerned
22:39because it came out so easily yesterday.
22:41But it's really a question of
22:43how easy does this keep happening
22:44and is it worth then getting surgery
22:47to keep it from happening in your sports?
22:49All right, let's get things started.
22:57We've got a four-woman heat here
22:58looking for the top two performers
23:00that will be moving on to the next round.
23:02And that red was Brianna Cope, the ultimate surfer.
23:09I don't look at anyone who is ever in my heat
23:12because I don't care what they're doing.
23:14I'm focused on me,
23:15and they can focus on me if they want to,
23:18but I don't really watch what they're doing.
23:21Was that a little savage?
23:22But, like, no, it's true.
23:23I don't, like, go and, like, check on how they're feeling.
23:25Like, I'm here to do my job.
23:28We'll see if we have some action in the water.
23:31Here we go.
23:32We're going to have a ride here.
23:33Look at this wave lining up for blue.
23:35Here goes white on her backhand, Carl Schuster.
23:42Here goes green.
23:43Green is up and going backside,
23:45trying to get ahead of that section
23:47and just unfortunately gets a little bogged down with that rail.
23:50Looks like Brianna is struggling to find a wave
23:54that's going to get her those points.
23:56Surfing is super trippy.
23:57You don't get another second chance.
23:58You have that 20 minutes to perform,
24:00and if you don't catch a wave,
24:01if you don't surf your best, you're done.
24:04Red, now getting it going here.
24:07Brianna Cope looking to take off
24:08and go frontside and hit it,
24:11do a nice little floater, get into the next section.
24:14Unfortunately, that wave closed out a little sooner,
24:17so she wasn't able to get that follow-up.
24:18And the surfing life, here she goes again in her backhand.
24:23Good speed check into another section.
24:26So there it is, two-turn combo for Coral.
24:28And we have Red up and riding on her forehand,
24:32quick in and out.
24:33So that's all she could really ask for for that wave.
24:37And we're going to count this one down here in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
24:45So there it is.
24:46Coral, Schuster, and Chelsea Rutz going to move on to the next round.
24:51I felt like I was super out of rhythm with the ocean.
24:54I think being from Hawaii, we're so used to, like, really good waves
24:56that sometimes, like a lot of us,
24:58when we go to small waves, struggle a little bit
24:59because that's not what we grew up surfing.
25:01And, yeah, I really didn't get to a wave where I could do a turn.
25:05Like, really, I feel like I couldn't even surf.
25:07Just, it's just heartbreaking.
25:08I don't want to cry.
25:17There's a couple more opportunities for me.
25:19I have Haleva.
25:20So if I win Haleva, I'll qualify for Challenge Series next year.
25:23Just depends on the rest of the girls from Hawaii,
25:25which is super nighly,
25:26because now you have to just kind of wait and see.
25:29I should have, like, I don't know.
25:30I tried to move so many times.
25:31I didn't want to sit still.
25:32I was like, yeah.
25:35It was sex.
25:41I just really hate contests sometimes.
25:45I think if you just, like, also think about,
25:49like, this is part of the process,
25:51like, surfing contests are, like, you win some and you lose some.
25:54And it's super heartbreaking.
25:55But at the end of the day, it's, like,
25:57you're so much more than just what you are in a jersey.
26:00And just focus on Haleva.
26:03Like, Haleva is next.
26:05Like, this contest is done.
26:07It's okay.
26:08It's okay.
26:09Oh, my God.
26:25And let's have a peek right now at Moana Jones.
26:27Look at her looking down the line here.
26:29Oh, my gosh.
26:30Well, she just got up and got speed right away,
26:32staying super high in that section to generate extra speed.
26:35Just a victory lap for Moana here.
26:37She's going to take the win.
26:40I won my heat.
26:42To the great confidence, it's always good to have a heat win.
26:46So, I'm feeling good.
26:47I really want to do well in this competition.
26:49Pua, up on her forehand.
26:53Big turn in the pocket.
26:55She sticks it.
26:56Yeah, look at this.
26:57Just power.
26:59Oh, slow-mo.
27:00Yeah.
27:00And then look, straight into another one.
27:02Wham.
27:03She made a little wave better than what it was.
27:06It's going to be Pua De Soto moving on.
27:08Here we go.
27:11Here goes Blue.
27:11Super talented.
27:13Watch out for her.
27:14Floats it.
27:15Little airdrop on the sections.
27:17Here goes Blue.
27:18Nice top turn into a second one.
27:21That's what you want to do.
27:23Miss Wong moving on to the round of 16.
27:26So, I'm here at the hospital.
27:30Probably the nicest hospital I've ever seen.
27:34And I'm going to check in for my MRI.
27:38It's definitely scarier for me to think that, like, I might not even be able to go in the
27:43ocean for a really long time if I have to get surgery.
27:47I really hope that's not the case.
27:50But only, I think, I'll only know that after the MRI.
27:53So, it's really like just taking everything one step at a time.
27:55I must say, she's giving one flu over the cuckoo's ass.
28:06All right.
28:10Welcome to day two of the Supergirl Pro here in Jacksonville, Florida.
28:15The heats have now become head-to-head, which means whoever wins moves on to the next round.
28:21In blue, out of Hawaii, 17 years of age, from Makaha, Oahu.
28:24It's Pua de Soto.
28:26All right.
28:32Here we go.
28:33Split pink.
28:34Red and blue.
28:35Pua on her backhand.
28:36Zoe Benedetto, same thing on her backhand.
28:39Love the board work.
28:40Oh, yeah.
28:40And now Pua's going to keep going.
28:42One more section.
28:43So, great exchange from both surfers there.
28:46Zoe Benedetto and Pua de Soto.
28:49I feel like, as a surfer, the biggest thing I always ask myself is, what can I control?
28:54I want to catch two waves in five minutes.
28:55Okay.
28:56Get those two waves in five minutes.
28:57Then after that, I'm going to wait for a better wave.
28:59Then I'm going to catch a set.
29:01Pua's going to let that one go.
29:02Oh, but Zoe Benedetto likes it.
29:06On her backhand, just keeping busy.
29:09One turn.
29:09Here you go.
29:10And the second turn, she gets a nice turn in the pocket.
29:13So, Zoe Benedetto, you see she claps both hands there.
29:16And she likes it.
29:17She's playing the, I want the perfect wave right now.
29:21Just being too picky.
29:22Here we go.
29:25Here's the Hawaiian.
29:26Oh, getting sassy.
29:27Oh, that was sick.
29:32Heaving it, throwing water around.
29:33And that's going to add to the score line.
29:35There it is.
29:37Pua, 6.67.
29:38You go to the lead with your last waves.
29:41That was a good last turn.
29:43Counting down.
29:44Here it is.
29:44Five, four, three, two, one.
29:50That was a good call.
29:51Yes.
29:52Pua de Soto edging out last year's equal third.
29:57And Florida girl, Zoe Benedetto, to see Pua come in and get ready for her next round.
30:03The one you didn't go on was your seven.
30:06Which one?
30:07In the middle.
30:08When you were under Zoe's priority and you backed off.
30:12It was a seven.
30:16Oh.
30:17Ow.
30:19Sorry.
30:19Here we go.
30:22Round of 16.
30:22Heat three.
30:23We have Moana Wong out of Hawaii.
30:26And Yua Wong out of Hawaii.
30:31I'm up against Moana.
30:32It's a two-man heat.
30:33And it'll actually be my first two-man heat I've ever served.
30:36So I'm excited.
30:41It looks like we're going to get it started here.
30:43Yua Wong paddling.
30:44She's going to go.
30:45Oh, my God.
30:46That's such a good one.
30:47Swag it.
30:47Ah!
30:51Here goes Blue and Red splitting the peak.
30:55So Red closed out section.
30:57Blue gets a nice top turn but gets hung.
30:59I did compete against Eve at sunset.
31:02And she got me in our heat.
31:05So I'm hoping to get some revenge.
31:07But we'll see what happens.
31:09Blue getting into this one.
31:10She's going to go right against the grain.
31:12There's that turn we were talking about.
31:14So she navigated that one well.
31:16And then into the inside section.
31:18Goes vertical and finishes up on her feet.
31:23And she is rewarded 5.50.
31:26Moving her into first.
31:29Moana is tough as nails.
31:31So she'll be fine.
31:32There she goes.
31:33Go Moana.
31:34Moana Wong.
31:35Here she goes up and riding on her backhand.
31:37She gets the first turn.
31:39Hits the brakes a little bit for the second one.
31:41Gets that.
31:42And then into a third turn.
31:43So keeping the flow and the rail moving.
31:45Comes in at a 3.97.
31:48Blue is going to turn and burn on this inside backhander.
31:52Gets the section straight into another one.
31:55It's going to line up too.
31:56Look at this.
31:56Another section here.
31:58Gets the turn.
31:59Tight in the pocket.
32:01And another one.
32:02So great combo there for Io Wong.
32:06She is your current heat leader.
32:08And there it is.
32:094.57 blue.
32:12So you're strengthening your lead.
32:14Red getting a nice strong hack.
32:17Two in a row.
32:18And finishing out strong with a third.
32:21Yeah.
32:21So red there got the better of it on the left.
32:25Blue had a right bull.
32:277-3-3.
32:27Red goes the first.
32:285, 4, 3, 2, 1.
32:34Whoa.
32:35Ladies and gentlemen, give it up on the beach.
32:37What an exciting heat there.
32:39Moana Jones Wong moving on.
32:42Yay!
32:43I was in the lead the majority of the heat.
32:46And then like the last two minutes, Moana got a 7.
32:51And I kind of knew that was going to happen.
32:54She's kind of known for getting buzzer beaters.
32:56And seeing how Moana serves the heat and how she like holds her composure like to the very last second.
33:01I definitely learned a lot from that.
33:04Autographs, girls.
33:05Pictures, autographs.
33:07That's what it's all about right there.
33:08Pretty good.
33:105-7-3 on your open.
33:14Semifinals.
33:14Here we go.
33:15We're going to have a heat on our hands.
33:17Get to work.
33:19Level up.
33:24We're going to see some pretty high scores here.
33:27Semifinals.
33:27We do have Pua De Soto from Hawaii.
33:30Oh, here comes a set.
33:34Outside.
33:35Here you go.
33:35Here you go.
33:36We do have kind of a couple waves coming.
33:38Here goes Red.
33:39She does have a section.
33:41Goes vertical.
33:42But she was just a little late to the party there.
33:45It's a quick one, though.
33:46And Red down the line.
33:48Oncoming section.
33:49Oh, bangs and drifts the fins.
33:51I guess as a dad, you go through the emotional roller coaster just as much as your daughter.
33:57You know, just I don't actually have to do the work part.
34:01I don't get to expend my nerves like she does.
34:03And the San Clemente powerhouse in blue.
34:06Bella Kenworthy.
34:08Tons of speed into the lip.
34:09Let's see.
34:10And Utah.
34:10Give me two.
34:11Another combo.
34:12Ladies and gentlemen.
34:13Make some noise for Bella Kenworthy.
34:15And 5.83 for blue.
34:17So she goes to first.
34:19Oh, that was a good banger for Bella.
34:22What's this left going to do, Pua?
34:26I feel like a hustle.
34:29And for Bella Kenworthy, she gets to her first Supergirl Pro Final.
34:35For Pua De Soto, excellent effort.
34:38Put your hands together for those two.
34:40Super, super happy for her to get third today.
34:43Definitely proud of what she's doing and how she's carrying herself and definitely setting a high bar for all women and for our family.
34:55I know she wants to win.
34:59Definitely bummed that I was just that close to making it to the final and possibly winning a Supergirl title.
35:05Hi, Dad.
35:06It shut off on us out there.
35:11In the beginning, I should have maybe got a couple more, but I was trying to wait for a real wave.
35:16All the hard work and dedication you put in, you know, comes to these moments.
35:20And I just wish I made it just that one more heat to the final.
35:33Up next, we've got Moana Jones.
35:35And with the home court advantage, local legend, Caroline Marks.
35:41She just hits the gas pedal here, sees the section, puts it in the pocket.
35:46Small board, small pocket.
35:50And here goes Moana Jones-Wong.
35:52And she gets it vertical.
35:54All right, here goes red.
35:55Caroline Marks, lots of speed.
35:57Boom, banks that top turn.
35:59Amazing.
36:00So there's Caroline Marks.
36:027.0 currently in the top spot.
36:04The waves are very weak, very tiny.
36:08Like, whoa, what is this?
36:09Like, this is actually pretty hard.
36:11There's not many waves.
36:12So if you miss a wave, you're kind of screwed.
36:15You have to be at the right place, in the right timing to catch a good wave today.
36:19Tide is dropping.
36:21Tide is dropping.
36:22It makes the peak shift very drastically, very quickly.
36:26As you've been saying throughout.
36:27And the blue maybe paddled too deep.
36:28So red is going to take advantage of this.
36:30Caroline Marks, red is up and riding, getting a nice quick backside turn, hack, combo back-to-back.
36:36It wasn't a really big wave, but she was really trying to generate some speed and energy.
36:41Moana has got to make a move if she's going to pull ahead here.
36:45Oh, here she goes.
36:47Blue's up and riding right here.
36:48Nice turn up into it.
36:50Bam, in a second.
36:51So a good combo right there for blue.
36:53But that's not going to be enough.
36:56Five, four, three, two, one.
37:05Caroline advances, which means Moana places third with fellow Hawaiian Pua de Soto.
37:14I actually am super stoked.
37:16That was like the only time that I'm okay to lose if it's like to somebody that I know is like really gnarly server, which is Caroline.
37:22And she's like super happy to have like come here for the first time and make it all the way to the semifinals.
37:28Being able to like showcase my small wave surfing, because I'm like supposed to be like the pipe master.
37:35I just lost at this contest, but I got a lot of points.
37:38So I found out that I officially won the Hawaii Tahiti region, and I'm super stoked.
37:44This means that I'm going to be the top ranked surfer from that region going into the Challenger Series.
37:52Hi, babe.
37:59Hi, Mom.
38:00How are you?
38:01Good. How are you?
38:03I'm good.
38:04I know it's not the result you wanted, but how do you think you handled the contest in general?
38:09I mean, obviously not the result I wanted to get, but even during sunset to this contest, like I felt really, really good.
38:19And I feel like my mental game is getting a lot better.
38:22So you're making progress.
38:24And that's the most important thing.
38:28So I'm proud of you.
38:29Thanks, Mom.
38:30I think you should be proud of yourself.
38:31Yeah.
38:43Okay, no. No more breaking, okay?
38:46Okay.
38:47It was a little hard for me to watch everybody surf.
38:50Not competing in this contest essentially meant that I wasn't going to get to qualify for the Challenger next year.
38:56I just wish I had the chance.
38:59Malu, tell us the result.
39:00I have a partial tear in two of my ligaments.
39:04I have something called a fusion, which is just because I've partially torn my ligament.
39:07It's just swollen.
39:08I think I'm not going to be able to surf poly evo contests.
39:12Right, that makes sense.
39:13Yeah.
39:13And I can still probably compete and fight.
39:15Yay!
39:17That's awesome.
39:17Group hug, group hug.
39:18Awesome.
39:19Woo-hoo!
39:20It makes a huge difference having a girl gang.
39:23We're just like pushing each other.
39:25We're like encouraging each other, supporting each other.
39:27It is so fun.
39:29How was your guys' contest?
39:30Me?
39:30Me and Fua just went all the way to the semifinals.
39:33I know you haven't looked.
39:35Oh my God, equal third.
39:36Got some grands.
39:37Whoa!
39:38Got some points.
39:40We're ranked one and two.
39:42Yeah!
39:43One and two.
39:43Qualified?
39:44Overall, the regional rankings for the qualifying series, Luana finished first.
39:48I got second, and Eva finished third in the region.
39:51So, the three of us will be together on the Challenger Series representing Hawaii.
39:55That's exciting.
39:56I mean, three native Hawaiians, I mean, out of the four.
40:00Like, that's pretty, we don't see that much anymore.
40:03So, I'm excited.
40:04It's amazing.
40:05It's amazing.
40:06I qualify for the Challenger Series because I did well on the rankings for the QS, and
40:19now that means I get to travel the world and surf different locations for different events.
40:25I've been feeling really good about my competition, surfing.
40:33Haleiwa, it's very powerful.
40:34Some of the most challenging and well-known waves on North Shore.
40:40Haleiwa is such a fun wave and such a performance wave, and you can really show your talent, and
40:44I just need to bring it in the heat.
40:47Haleiwa is, like, where I want to surf.
40:49If I win Haleiwa, I'll qualify for Challenger Series next year.
40:53Haleiwa is where you come to prove yourself.
40:55And it's dangerous.
40:58Got into the Haleiwa Challenger just as a wild card.
41:02This is, like, the bigger stage.
41:05All of them are pro surfers, and they're all the exciting wild card.
41:09One more time to the lip, and...
41:11Oh!
41:25...
