00:01A young raptor called Pod
00:06fights for his life in a land of giants.
00:12His world is a prehistoric battlefield
00:16ruled by size and strength.
00:20Until a monster from the sea turns this realm upside down.
00:25A lone castaway awakens on a distant island
00:32and begins his quest for survival.
00:36But the journey leads instead to a primeval Neverland.
00:41Here, life and death operate on a new and mysterious scale.
00:45Pod is a prehistoric gulliver,
00:56stranded in the kingdom of the small.
00:58Eighty million years ago, most of Europe sleeps beneath a vast and shallow sea.
01:11A matrix of volcanic islands occupies the region known today as Southern Europe.
01:18Dry land is hard to find, but there's plenty of beachfront to go around.
01:21Here, on the Great Old Hennesque,
01:23the Great Old Houses of Blue Homes and
01:24Plopen lived in the tree of water.
01:27the region known today as Southern Europe.
01:31Dry land is hard to find, but there's plenty of beachfront to go around.
01:50Here, on the Great Islands, the residents are key players in the closing act of dinosaur
01:55evolution.
01:59A mixed bag of prehistoric vegans and late Cretaceous carnivores roam the fertile lowlands.
02:08Beneath it all, a troubled earth and a growing sense of unease.
02:19Within 24 hours, a single geophysical event will transform their world.
02:26But for now, it's business as usual for two radically opposed species.
02:32On the low end, a three-pack of agile, pint-sized carnivores barely eight feet long.
02:38Towering above them, a skyline of titanosaurs, Europe's foremost vegetarians.
02:44At five tons, adults weigh roughly the same as a jumbo elephant.
02:50Consequently, they chew their greens with a certain nonchalance.
02:54But even titanosaurs put lunch on hold when meat-eaters loiter by the salad bar.
03:04Armed with a killing claw on his second toe and high-torque legs, this is Pyroraptor Olympias.
03:09Pod for short.
03:15Pod's deal is not about size, it's about smarts.
03:20His brain-to-body ratio make him almost gifted by dinosaur standards.
03:25The low end of the IQ scale is the Iguanodon, but Pod doesn't take them lightly.
03:36These three-ton grazers carry 30 times his body weight.
03:39Iguanodons can change their default setting from lawn mower to tree trimmer using their large spiked thumb claws to harvest leaves.
03:57The dinosaurs can't identify the source of the low-frequency rumble, but they feel it 100%.
04:09Instinctively, Pod's pack heads for high ground.
04:27The tremors end as mysteriously as they began.
04:39But no one's wired to stay afraid for too long.
04:46Including Pod.
04:52He's turned his attention to a new, incoming sensation.
04:57Something positive for a change.
05:09Pod follows his nose upwind to a dry riverbed about 60 yards from the rise.
05:19While his position here is totally exposed to competitors, the risk is outweighed by the prize.
05:27What's left of a small Iguanodon, covered by a cloud of flies.
05:34The carcass reeks, but it's all his.
05:39As the dominant leader of his pack, Pod will eat his fill before calling in his sisters.
05:53Iguanodon.
05:59Tarascosaurs are Southern Europe's dominant predators.
06:29The pod calls for backup.
06:47Engaging the enemy is futile, but raising the possibility might scare them off.
06:56The Tarascosaurs aren't buying it.
07:26The pod gets a wake-up call.
07:38The raptors have won a reprieve.
07:45The crippled Tarascosaurus is no longer an asset to his mate.
07:58Given the chance, she might even eat him for lunch.
08:05When Pod and his sisters turn the tables, the standing Tarascosaurus retreats.
08:24The pack consider their endgame, but only one move presents itself.
08:39To run for their lives.
08:46The thunder of the stampede and the rumbling quakes of the earth seem to come from everywhere.
09:13Pod stops to see if his pack is safe from the iguanodons.
09:28The stampede is far from over, so Pod urges his sisters to go with the flow.
09:49Volcanic tremors escalate the level of distress.
09:58The animals can't make the connection.
10:02This strand of beach provides room to maneuver.
10:06Another plus is the slowing effect of soft sand on giant dumbbells.
10:23Pod and his sisters have come to this beach many times to scavenge for dead fish.
10:28But tonight is so different.
10:37A distant and fiery ghost haunts the beach.
10:41A threat that now claims the sea itself.
10:47Far beneath the surface, two opposing crusts of the earth have reached a breaking point.
11:02The waters of the bay recede from the beach as one great sheet.
11:30The sea now builds like a dorsal back of a sea monster.
11:37As a single towering beast, the water returns to the land.
11:45A prehistoric tsunami breaks on the shores of southern Europe.
12:00Its arrival marked by a final cry of defiance.
12:06A great wave locks the animals in a slow motion vortex of water and debris.
12:21Only a few will escape the sleep that now swells their lungs.
12:28One small predator evades death.
12:36Pod awakens to an empty, confusing world.
12:43He clings to life on a drifting tree trunk.
12:48But he's not alone.
12:51One of Pod's sisters has survived.
13:06Joined by one of his kind, Pod is reassured that part of his pack still exists.
13:13At fifty feet long, the plesiosaur flies through the water like a great bird of prey.
13:32Clenched in its jaws is all that remains of Pod's clan.
13:48The only link to the past broken forever.
13:52Once a deadly pre-
13:56An accidental tourist in search of a map.
14:02His second day of drift ends in total exhaustion.
14:05And asleep as dark and deep as the sea.
14:11As dawn breaks, Pod's lifeboat is carried north by a light, prevailing wind.
14:22But driven by the rising sun, the salt air and heat preys on Pod's last reserves of strength until night falls again.
14:40The only thing keeping Pod alive is the attention he's getting from scavengers who just as soon find him dead.
14:52The ichthyornis is a major pain.
15:19But his presence here is also a positive sign.
15:23Birds like these cannot survive entirely on the sea.
15:26On day three, the morning breeze carries a familiar scent.
15:41An aroma deeply imprinted in Pod's memory bank.
15:46The sweet smell of dry land.
15:49But Pod is too weak to swim to shore.
15:51The next morning, on the island in question, the seabirds are at it again.
16:13Something new on the beach.
16:16For a second, Pod wonders why the sea is so calm.
16:19What's with those trees?
16:23Then...
16:24It's lights out.
16:29mystical
16:32For a second, Pod wonders why the sea is so calm.
16:34What's with those trees?
16:38Then, its lights out.
16:41Then, it's lights out.
16:48While he has no memory of what happened,
16:51Pod has washed ashore on the back of his log,
16:54and 24 hours later, he's still out cold.
17:01Curiosity once again overcomes the seabirds,
17:04and they're not the only ones.
17:11Drawn to the scene by all the rackets,
17:13is a very small version of...
17:17Pod.
17:23The birds are put on notice that this corpse is taken.
17:27The claim is backed up by two more associates.
17:41And stay away!
17:45Birds are pushovers.
17:47Terrestrial crocodiles are a whole new ballgame.
17:51Allodoposuchus.
17:57Birds are pushovers.
18:00Terrestrial crocodiles are a whole new ballgame.
18:04Allodoposuchus.
18:06A long name for predators short on brains.
18:09But totally fearless in battle.
18:13The little raptors are about to be outclassed.
18:16outclassed. In more ways than one. Pod is delirious, but he's nobody's carcass.
18:31When Pod takes a stand, Crocs back down. But not the mini-raptors. Pod's never seen such aggressive
18:57behavior from animals this size, and for some unknown reason, they've never seen anything
19:04like Pod. Pod has survived the perils of the sea, but his journey has only just begun.
19:27He's stranded on dangerous new ground. The good news? It's not shaking. That's just his legs.
19:40Half dead but determined, Pod will follow the trail of the local raptors.
19:46If he can keep on his feet, these islanders will lead him to a pack of his own kind.
19:55A second chance. Pod hears a welcome sound. It comes from a stream on its way to the sea.
20:12The search will have to wait. Pod hasn't had a drop of fresh water in days.
20:19The calls of animals in the distance, tempted to leave. But Pod senses he doesn't have the juice.
20:32He must drink now, or die. While the water is cool and fresh, the effect on Pod is narcotic.
20:39It's time to find a safe place to crash. At the base of a ten-story soft wood, the
21:09a hard day ends, on a pillow of soft leaves.
21:16Now, the water is alive.
21:17Here it is, in the water, and the water are not deep.
21:22If you can get off, it's time to catch the water.
21:23After the water is not deep, you may get off.
21:25I need to move the water in the way.
21:26Time to catch the water so you can come.
21:30I can not please hear it in the water.
21:39I can hear it in the water.
21:41I can miss you.
21:43At daybreak, every muscle in Pod's body is stiff and sore, a thick crust of sea salt
22:02on Pod's skin and feathers demands attention.
22:24Pod is caught completely off guard, it's one of the raptors from the beach.
22:35How can a creature so small be so aggressive?
22:40Pod's gut tells him that a pack of hunters is planning the next move.
22:46Eighty million years ago, southern Europe looked less like a continent and more like
22:51a chain of islands.
22:53The islands dotted a body of water called the Tethi Sea, yet the dinosaurs still managed
22:58to get around.
22:59How?
23:00Would you believe bridges and boats?
23:03During the age of dinosaurs, continental drift was reshaping the face of the planet.
23:09As the continents drifted, the animals went along for the ride.
23:13When one land mass collided with another, a land bridge formed, allowing dinosaurs to
23:19colonize new territory.
23:21Likewise, as continents drifted apart, members of the same species went their separate ways.
23:27The evidence?
23:28Relatives of Tarascosaurus are found on southern continents, but nowhere in the northern hemisphere,
23:35except in southern Europe.
23:37And how were these and other dinosaurs able to island hop?
23:43Perhaps on natural rafts.
23:45Some Caribbean islands are populated by iguanas whose ancestors had to cross nearly 200 miles of water.
23:52water.
23:53The only transport?
23:54The only transport?
23:55rafts of vegetation.
23:59It seems improbable, but with enough time, say millions of years, the odds of even the unlikely occurring
24:06become almost a certainty.
24:11The mini-raptors Pod has been tracking have found him instead.
24:17But there's something about them.
24:27Instead of treating Pod as a kindred species, they panic and retreat, as though he were some
24:33kind of giant, alien predator.
24:36But Pod senses the intruders might still lead him to a pack of his own kind, and the promise
24:48of survival.
24:50So Pod embarks on a prehistoric journey of discovery.
24:57Yet, the more he explores this brave new world, the less he understands it.
25:12At least the water tastes the same.
25:22And now, another riddle.
25:33A herd of tiny iguanas, hunted down by the same mini-raptors.
25:37While Pod's hunger is stupendous, he can't bring himself to join the hunt.
25:52Pod's disconnect is instinctive.
26:01While the size ratio between predator and prey is the same, the overall scale of these creatures
26:08compared to their surroundings is too small.
26:11Nothing in Pod's experience provides a clue.
26:16The creatures on this island can't be that different from the ones he grew up with.
26:21No way!
26:23Just downriver, Pod stumbles straight into a catered lunch.
26:32A group of pint-sized titanosaurs stand directly upwind.
26:36Called Magurosaurus, they are one quarter the size of the giant's Pod knew on his old island.
26:45These pocket versions are completely unaware they've walked directly into Pod's crosshairs.
26:59Luckily for them, Pod's instinct to avoid their kind is too deeply ingrained.
27:14Feeling no comfort factor, he withdraws.
27:20As an added precaution, Pod puts some daylight between himself and the odd-sized animals.
27:32Just around the corner, his luck takes a one-acre.
27:36Broadcast down the walls of the river valley are the sounds of boundless opportunity.

35:16smaller. Pod's landed in a prehistoric lily pit. This island is smaller than the one he
35:31came from, and the environment can't support normal-sized animals like Pod. So evolution
35:39has favored the small over the great. Life and death struggles go on here, only on a smaller scale.
35:56While Pod can't process the fine points, one thing is sadly clear.
36:00He's more alone now than he ever was at sea.
36:30WINDOWS
36:37WINDOWS
36:48WINDOWS
36:53Throughout this strange island, animals of every sort remain in constant communication.
37:13But Pod's cries for companionship go unanswered.
37:18His calls fade like the sunset on this strange and lonely land.
37:23The lay of Pod's new land ascends from the sea to a high country, alive with hidden cascades and lush valleys.
37:52Hidden here as well may be the company Pod craves, distant relatives of his own kind, raptors willing to take a stranger into their group.
38:04Up on this high ridge, the sounds of other land ascends from the sea to the sea to the sea to the sea to the sea.
38:16Maybe a good shot from up here will travel well.
38:20Up on this high ridge, the sounds of other animals seem to come from everywhere.
38:36Maybe a good shot from up here will travel well.
38:46jets are capturing the mostяли to the sea.
38:52Two Marco is部分 in the sea.
39:05Deceived by his own echo, Pod believes he's made contact with another raptor like him.
39:10I don't know.
39:40Hod's broadcast has not gone unheard.
39:49The question now is whether he's attracted an audience or a dangerous mob.
40:00Pyroraptor is known only from a handful of bones, yet it is fully reconstructed here
40:05and with many bird-like features.
40:08Is this gross speculation?
40:10Well, not quite.
40:12We start by looking at specialized features common to two or more kinds of species.
40:19That evidence is then used to generate a branching diagram
40:22that gives us a best estimate of evolutionary relationships,
40:27a kind of biological family tree.
40:29The few bones we have of Pyroraptor share several specialized features with other small carnivorous
40:37dinosaurs like Velociraptor.
40:39Since Velociraptor is known from nearly complete skeletons, we can use this information to help
40:47reconstruct the missing pieces of Pyroraptor.
40:50Sherlock Holmes might have called it deduction, biologists call it cladistics.
40:55But what about non-bony tissues, like feathers?
40:59Recent discoveries in China include remarkable fossils of several kinds of meat-eating dinosaurs
41:06with distinct feather impressions.
41:08The diversity of this feather evidence now includes several groups of carnivorous dinosaurs,
41:14indicating that the common ancestor of these little predators was also feathered.
41:19Since Pyroraptor belongs to one of these groups, it's reasonable to conclude it was feathered too,
41:26though we can't be certain.
41:29In my line of detective work, new clues are always turning up,
41:33and few cases are ever truly closed.
41:40Pod's quest to find others of his species has ended in failure.
41:44But a pack of dwarf Troodons has heard him loud and clear.
42:06Pod has reached a crossroads on his journey of discovery.
42:09He can play it safe on the high ground, or climb back down to a world of uncertainty and risk.
42:23There is no doubt the plaintive calls are meant for him,
42:26but they come from a pack of skillful, well-organized predators.
42:39Pod decides to go for broke.
43:03With his killing claw deployed, Pod is ready to confront the pack.
43:07But the return vibe seems submissive.
43:16For the first time on this island, he gets some genuine respect.
43:28All the Troodons want to do is follow in his footsteps.
43:31Pod's new pack want this relationship to last.
43:39Like them, he's an intelligent and accomplished killer, only more so.
43:45Like four feet more so.
43:47A dinosaur has been taken down by Pod's old nemesis.
43:59A dinosaur has been taken down by Pod's old nemesis.
44:13Throughout his life, Pod has had to sidestep the Tarrastasaurus.
44:21The only thing they had going was their size.
44:24That was then.
44:26And this is now.
44:27A dinosaur has been rescued.
44:33Nope.
44:35No?
44:38I Obrigado.
44:45I rot the fox, D Command.
44:48I am glad for some reason.
44:48I am glad for a boy who has, Twilightma.
44:50I am grand.
44:51It always corresponds.
44:52To me, in my mind.
44:52Guarante seems to be theosh.
44:53I cannot believe it's been the greatest fighting weapon.
44:54You can't believe I am.
44:55Pod's killing toes score direct hits.
45:06Pod has laid down the new law.
45:22From now on, all kills on this island belong to him.
45:38Pod's victory has confirmed the highest expectation of the Troodons.
45:46In return for their acceptance, Pod will share the spoils of his new empire.
45:53Pod is now the apex predator of the island.
46:12The sun has risen only ten times from the day he washed ashore.
46:25And Pod has yet to find the mini-raptors that inspired his long trek inland.
46:31His island wanderings have returned him to the spot where his journey began.
46:50The calls of the seabirds turn his attention to a large and familiar object.
47:05It saved his life.
47:10The log still carries the scent of another life.
47:15A world Pod will never see again.
47:19Exiled from a realm of giants, Pod now rules...
