00:00Wearing the red singlet, representing La France, it's Vahine Fierro.
00:05As we see the first wave of Vahine.
00:07Fierro, bang, that's a great turn, her backhand's a weapon.
00:11Meanwhile, picking her out in the backlit conditions, it's the South American.
00:17I get it.
00:19And she's carving up the storm here.
00:22Straight into this, she waited well in the heat earlier this time.
00:26Wow, that's a really dynamic, bold finish.
00:30Decent stuff, second place.
00:32That wave was really well surfed.
00:34She's warm on a wave as well.
00:46I think Eva was feeling a little nervous for this heat.
00:49The waves are a lot bigger than they were yesterday.
00:51I know she can handle it.
00:53Yeah, they're definitely tough conditions.
00:55Yeah.
00:56Longer wave, a lot of surf done.
01:05Damn.
01:06Almost.
01:07It's okay.
01:08All right, here goes the Peruvian.
01:17Again, mid-face really with that hook.
01:18Besides not go all the way into the lip.
01:19That's because the wave is softer there.
01:21Just get left high and out on the face.
01:23Now it's steeper.
01:25She opens up with a snap, just kind of pushes that tail out.
01:29Uses full height of the wave.
01:30That was really nice.
01:31She lays that one back.
01:33Just showing something a little different there.
01:35So each turn, she sort of felt her way into that.
01:38Gave it a bit more.
01:39Yeah, number just in.
01:40Six for that.
01:41Her second wave.
01:42Decent stuff.
01:43Second place.
01:44Sofia there.
01:48Swing it.
01:49This is Medina.
01:55Working this one down towards an inside section.
01:58It's a heavy section.
01:59We've seen people go down in this heat.
02:01Trying to sort of overcook it there.
02:03But it looks like Medina will hang on.
02:05Just pressure moments for our surfers in turn and forth.
02:09Yeah, it's all about finding the right wave, isn't it?
02:12The Hawaiian easy one.
02:14Arnold, 30 seconds it.
02:19That smooth style.
02:21She's looking for a 75.
02:26The snap.
02:27And through to an inside.
02:28She got a finish.
02:29I'm not sure if she does.
02:30That one wave would just kind of run out.
02:32Well, we're not lowest.
02:34She's just not really had quality sections.
02:38Apart from that, maybe that very early fall.
02:40That offered us something since then.
02:41It's been pretty tough for everyone, really.
02:43It's been tough for everyone, really.
02:45It's been tough.
02:46It's been tough.
02:47It's been tough.
02:48All snap of the scores.
02:49And we're lost to half of the lights.
02:56So Varine is safe into the next round.
02:58And joining her will be Sol Aguirre from Peru.
03:02And unfortunately for Wong in Medina, they end up losing this event.
03:22Oh, that was really bad.
03:24I just hope I didn't ruin all my chances to be on top 10 after that heat.
03:39Sol finishing in second place.
03:46Oh, my God.
03:47I can't stop myself.
03:48I'll take another minute to some cruise.
03:49See?
03:50This living the moment works.
03:54Going home to Reset between these two events really paid off.
03:57I feel so much more connected to my surfing.
04:00If you start well, you end up well.
04:02But I'm not going to get too relaxed because Portugal is not over yet.
04:06And I need to bring it on the next scene.
04:09I can't stop smiling.
04:11We are going to be Cintra today.
04:25I went last year, but I haven't been back yet this year.
04:32I'm pretty bummed I didn't make it further in Portugal.
04:35I lost second heat.
04:36It was a pretty tough loss.
04:37But at least now I can enjoy my time touring Portugal with Mom and Tutu.
04:48For our way, it's the Morsh Palace.
04:50The what kind of palace?
04:51Morsh?
04:52Morsh?
04:53The Morsh.
04:54We're at the Morsh Palace.
04:56Castle of the Moors.
04:58The Moorish Palace.
04:59Oh, I think it's okay.
05:07We're bleeding.
05:09And the guts run deep.
05:12But the pain always goes away.
05:14Before I was on the Challenger Series, I barely left Hawaii.
05:17So now it's cool to travel and see the rest of the world.
05:20Dinner.
05:22Shrimp lingini.
05:25And a glass of red wine.
05:26Oh.
05:27Not have that.
05:29Taking this time to relax right now is a really good way to reset.
05:32There's one more comp coming up.
05:34And I'm hoping to end this year strong.
05:36Ten out of ten.
05:37We won't give up.
05:40Light in the clouds, but we're still shining.
05:47It's all about me.
05:49All about me.
05:51I could walk in your shoes, but it's not about you.
05:56Oh, my God.
05:58Thank you so much.
05:59That's so stunning.
06:03So you've traveled most of the year alone?
06:05Yeah.
06:06So my dad was supposed to come with me to all the events this year.
06:11But then I didn't get any results, so we've run out of budget.
06:14Even though I didn't, like, get results, it was so good to have him on tour.
06:18Because he coaches me.
06:19Like, he's my coach.
06:20So technical coaching, I tap into other people for.
06:23Do you get along with him?
06:25Yes.
06:26Yes.
06:27We're so close.
06:28I have a very close family.
06:29When I was younger, he naturally became my coach because he knew me so well.
06:32I can't imagine working with someone else who doesn't quite, like, understand me.
06:38This year, I'm learning a lot about getting over my nerves to serve smart and confidently.
06:43Because I need to be making heats if I want to qualify for the championship tour and have my family with me.
06:49Yeah, it's hard to travel with your dad.
06:53I mean, the budget part.
06:55Like, I wanted him to come here in Portugal, but it was too expensive.
07:00But I'm excited because he's going to Brazil.
07:03Does your dad coach you or have you got a different coach that you work with?
07:07He has been coaching me for, like, since baby days till I was, like, 18.
07:12But then I realized, like, I needed to travel alone because I needed to be independent and, like, push myself, develop.
07:23It was a little hard, but that year that I started traveling, I went to Chile on my own.
07:29I won the QS 3000 and I won the junior the same day.
07:33Wow, that's huge.
07:35Yeah.
07:36Yeah, that's super interesting.
07:37I mean, I think in the Challenger especially, everyone is so good and serves so good that the big difference is the mind control and the mindset.
07:48So, South Africa.
07:51I kind of was, like, very anxious and scared because after South Africa, I was going to the Olympics.
08:03And I couldn't get the Olympics out of my mind.
08:06Mentally, I wasn't in South Africa.
08:08Like, I competed and I couldn't think straight.
08:11Like, it was crazy.
08:12I've never felt that thing before.
08:14Like, do you think that you were ready for the Olympics?
08:18I don't think I was ready at all, mentally.
08:22It was crazy.
08:23Like, is this mountain, like, the top of the hill, the higher you go, the stronger the winds are.
08:32And it's like, you have all these expectations, but I just couldn't handle it.
08:37It's so good to get to know people who are competing more and hearing, like, a bit more of in-depth what's going through their minds and what they're working on because
08:47I always perceive you from the outside, like, before I knew you, that you're calm and you're confident.
08:53You look like you're clear-headed.
08:54That's what people tell me.
08:56Yeah, it's interesting to hear that there's more behind the scenes.
08:59Everyone has their own battles.
09:01Mm.
09:02It's about living day by day.
09:04Yes.
09:05And, like, enjoy every single moment, living the moment.
09:08Yep.
09:09And you've got a big opportunity to end the year strong.
09:11I know.
09:12I'm so motivated.
09:13Yeah.
09:14That's amazing.
09:15I'm excited for you.
09:16Thank you for reminding me that.
09:18I've got no reason to stop this.
09:21It's like we're running for fire.
09:23A buffet that ain't decided, can't start to stop it.
09:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:27Once again, from Portugal, it's the Challenger Series.
09:30And we're getting close to the pointy end of competition, reaching a climax at the end of the week here in Aerocera.
09:36At the moment, there's still so much up for grabs.
09:47This is the fifth stop of the Challenger Series.
09:50It's been a long year that went super fast.
09:53And I have lots of ups and lots of downs.
09:57But I've had my great result here.
10:01A little nervous, but I'm looking forward to end this season the best I can.
10:07Welcome back to the shores of Portugal.
10:13We are rifling through the round of 16 of the women.
10:19Kira Pickerton in the water with Sol Aguirre.
10:22Kira comes around the edge and there's a big turn.
10:25Kira going to town.
10:32Here's Sol.
10:34So she's driving down the line.
10:36Oh, there's a nice little layback snap in the pocket.
10:40Just waiting for a finish if you can.
10:42A little swooping car with the arms out.
10:47This wave just not really delivering.
10:49A last little finish.
10:50Here goes Pickerton.
10:54The nice looking face.
10:55There's a little down carve.
10:58And that means she can hit the lip on the second turn.
11:04She likes it.
11:06And here goes Sol under priority.
11:09It's a little miniature sort of foam climb.
11:11A bit working face here.
11:12Hits the lip there with a better turn.
11:14A bit of spray.
11:16And there's a third.
11:17It's a little bit sticky.
11:20She's going to aim for a finish.
11:21So there's a nice finish.
11:22So there's two ways ridden in a few minutes.
11:23Are you happy about that?
11:24Yes.
11:25Over the chase for a goal.
11:26Yes.
11:27And she makes it.
11:28Pickerton just keeps racking them up.
11:33She's been busy.
11:36I just feel like the American, Kira Pickerton,
11:39is getting way more drive and speed.
11:44You know, this next one is going to be the crucial one for Sol.
11:47She needs an 8.53.
11:49So this is her last wave probably at the whole event to be honest.
11:52There's a lovely turn.
11:53Again, just shows that flashes of brilliance.
11:56We're going to go.
11:58We're about to finish this wave.
12:00Five, four, three, two, one.
12:03She served incredible.
12:04She really did.
12:05So big, big heat win there for Kira Pickerton.
12:14I was feeling mad and sad, but I just got accepted.
12:19She served better.
12:20So I just got to get better.
12:21I just want to compete and get the chances I have to like keep pushing my surfing.
12:28And I want to finish this year right.
12:31My family is so competitive in everything.
12:43So I play tennis.
12:44I play basketball.
12:45And I used to play soccer with the boys at school.
12:48And I used to be so competitive.
12:49They would look at me and be like, that girl is scary.
12:52She's an Orly.
12:53I like it.
12:54Let's talk it on Green Park and I only came in next week.
12:56.
13:01My family is so competitive in everything.
13:03So I play tennis.
13:04I play basketball.
13:05And I used to play soccer with the boys at school.
13:06And I used to be so competitive.
13:07They would look at me and be like, that girl is scary.
13:10she's an Orly.
13:13Let's talk to combinardinha.
13:14I know.
13:15My brother Gabriel, he's been always my biggest supporter.
13:31I feel like I've been needing more of him as a big brother and not just be competing
13:36all the time.
13:37And he knows that.
13:38It's nice that we can spend some time together.
13:40We love it when we're together.
13:42I love it.
13:43It feels safe, feels home a little bit.
13:46It feels like home.
13:49Time goes so fast.
13:51Would you imagine I would be competing?
13:54Not as good.
13:56No, you're too good.
14:00That was really sweet.
14:01But I truly love this life.
14:04And it was because one day I watched you, like, I could travel and see how is it.
14:09And I was like, oh, I want to do that as well.
14:12Girl surf is growing so much.
14:15I've never seen so many girls in the water.
14:18And the way they surf and put themselves in situations in the water.
14:23It used to be different back then.
14:25Your generation is strong.
14:27So strong.
14:28So many.
14:29Many girls.
14:30Many girls.
14:31That's why you got to work so hard.
14:33Yeah.
14:34You know, it is what it is.
14:35You know when you feel like it's not going to work?
14:38Yeah.
14:39But you don't want to accept that you feel that.
14:43So I was feeling that, but I was like, no, I can't feel that.
14:46You know, and I was so lost.
14:49Yeah.
14:50Like I wasn't connected with the ocean.
14:52It happens.
14:53Yeah.
14:54When I was 18, I almost fell off on the tour.
14:59Really?
15:00And then I got a good result.
15:01And then I would qualify.
15:02And then.
15:03No way.
15:04I didn't know that.
15:05Yeah.
15:06Did you, like, you used to think a lot?
15:08You used to think.
15:09About everything?
15:10Yeah.
15:11Yeah.
15:12Maybe put more self, more pressure on myself.
15:14Yeah.
15:15Yeah.
15:16I feel like you handle it so much better with pressure than without pressure.
15:19Yeah.
15:20Coming to this event, I kind of felt nervous.
15:23Like a little bit of pressure.
15:25And so, like, before going to Saquarema, I don't want to make the same mistakes.
15:30You know what I mean?
15:31Yeah.
15:32You're going to make a lot of mistakes, but you're going to fix after, you know?
15:36Yeah.
15:37It's crazy.
15:38You're going to make a lot of mistakes.
15:39You're going to make a lot of mistakes.
15:40You're going to make it so.
15:41You're going to keep working.
15:42Yeah.
15:43I used to not appreciate your love too much.
15:45Yeah.
15:46Because I wouldn't...
15:47You're too young.
15:48Yeah.
15:49But now I get it.
15:50I love you so much.
15:51I love you.
15:52I love you.

16:29sponsor and I was super happy to be sponsor when I was 10 years old. Each
16:34year they give me money so that I could buy their clothes. This is the biggest
16:37store we have in Portugal and also one of the biggest in Europe. I have a budget
16:42for winter and for summer. I can just pick whatever I want and yeah pretty
16:47spoiled. It's awesome being fortunate enough to just come into the store and
16:51grab things that I like. I love clothes so it's really good that I just can come
16:56and pick what I want. It's pretty fun. I always get excited to see what's new.
17:01Okay I'm gonna go check the wetsuits. In Portugal the water is really cold so I
17:06want to make sure I get them fast before they they sell out. Trying to look for a
17:10size size 4. A little old-school back zip.
17:16Thank you, bye-bye.
17:26Hawaii has a lot of Portuguese influence and Tutu is part Portuguese, part Hawaiian and she's never been out of the country before so this trip's yeah really special.
17:40Okay cheers. You can cheers with your water.
17:56Do family trips to Portugal. Cheers. Tutu it's been so nice having you here.
18:07Are you excited for your first out of the country trip? Yes it's a lot more than I
18:13was expecting. There's so much to see. It's been so much fun. It is really beautiful.
18:18It's really beautiful. Most my Portuguese comes from you. I don't know much about my Portuguese side so
18:25yeah I think it's really cool that you got to come and I'm really happy that you're
18:29here for this event. It's been wonderful. And it's pretty cool that we've got to have
18:35three generations of women on this trip together. Yeah. That was just super awesome.
18:40It's been fun. Being able to come out here and watch this has been really really wonderful.
18:46And we get to spend a little time together since I never see you anymore.
18:52You're like yep. I'm on my own now. No it's been so much better. Yeah it's been so much better so I'm so much more mellow.
19:00Yeah you're so angry last year. Hey take it easy I'm a mom okay. When you dedicate your life to something we're dedicating our lives to it as well.
19:08But this trip has been really good. We've been super chill. We haven't even gotten into one single fight.
19:13We're super excited to see how you do for the last contest.
19:21Obviously I want you to do the best that you can do but I really do think grow learn progress.
19:27Yeah. But overall like you guys are the top 50 female surfers in the world. And that's definitely something to be very proud of.
19:37Yeah. Very proud of. Yeah. Very proud of. Thank you. We'll definitely be watching. Yep.
19:43So yeah I'll be stalking you two.
19:45Hi. Hi. Hi. This is the only thing I don't like about traveling is packing. It's very stressful. I gotta be prepared for everything.
19:55Thanks. The next stop is Brazil. It defines a lot of things. CT qualification. Re-qualification to the challengers. So it's hard. You just have to like fight for it.
20:11I think we're good to go.
20:27Hi. So we're leaving Portugal and we're going to Saquarema. Uh oh. Last call. Gotta go.
20:43Good morning. We're off to Brazil.
20:49There she is. She only just arrived and I've been here the whole time waiting and she goes straight to the front because she's premium platinum.
20:58Putting my plane snacks together.
21:02We went to get food at the lounge and now we're running to make our boarding. Whoops.
21:11Hey Portugal!
21:14We're all supposed to fight. But we made it.
21:18I got lucky.
21:20Come on.
21:22Let's go!
21:33Eating is very important.
21:37Seoul's bags made it and I'm still waiting for my first one.
21:42Oh there it is. There it is.
21:45There it is.
21:46So we just arrived in Brazil.
21:49Now I have the right passport too.
21:52We're going to get the car to go to Saquarema.
21:55See you!
21:57Room tour in Brazil.
22:11This is my dirty clothes I haven't washed yet.
22:13And yeah, this is my room.
22:16It has a patio outside where we can barbecue and make some pizza.
22:21And then we have a swimming pool too.
22:26It's pretty sick.
22:28It's pretty sick.
22:37It's very windy.
22:38Wow!
22:39Wow!
22:40Wow!
22:41Let's sit here a little bit.
22:43It's nice to be here and...
22:45I don't know, it's just beautiful. It's all special and I think it's a beautiful town.
22:50Brazil is my favorite place.
22:53It's my home country and it's just beautiful.
22:55It's full of colors, full of life and full of happiness and joy.
23:00People here are happy.
23:02I love being Brazilian and I'm really proud to say I'm from here.
23:05This place is the best place to do a contest in Brazil.
23:12It's more calm.
23:14The waves are very good.
23:17It's very consistent.
23:18Yeah.
23:19You remember 2021 when we came here?
23:22It was my first QS win of my life.
23:26We didn't expect winning a QS here, right?
23:36We were just starting.
23:37It was my second year on the original QS.
23:39And we came here and we were watching the sunset right here.
23:44Just looking back, it's amazing to...
23:47Like, we're sitting in different positions right now, different rankings.
23:54I'm happy to be here, but we know the responsibility we have in the championship.
24:00The level is higher and it's a little bit more serious.
24:04Sitting on top 15 of the Challenger Series after three years.
24:08But at the same time, I feel like we still have the same reflections
24:13and we're still the same people with different experiences.
24:17And it's a special place where special things happen for us, I think.
24:22Yeah.
24:23I normally don't say that I'm proud of me or proud of us.
24:26I usually say I'm proud of you.
24:28But I'm literally, like, I'm proud of us.
24:31I'm proud of what we've been working and just to get here.
24:35It's scary that I put all my eggs in one basket on the Challenger Series.
24:40I'm not only trying to make it to top five to qualify for the championship tour,
24:45but I need to make at least top ten to qualify for the Challenger Series next year.
24:50Right now, I'm in 13th place, so I have to do really well.
24:54It's a lot of added pressure on top of performing well in my home country.
24:58Now that's it.
24:59Work, fun, happy, happy.
25:01And enjoy every moment.
25:02And enjoy.
25:03We love Saquarema.
25:05We love Saquarema.
25:15Ready for the competition?
25:16Yeah.
25:21Saquarema is my second home on the regionals.
25:24My mom always comes to Saquarema.
25:26And I really wanted my dad to experience this Challenger in Brazil.
25:31I kind of miss having my dad on my corner.
25:34So I'm very happy and excited that he's here.
25:37My mom and I always come here because we have a friend.
25:40Casa de Praia.
25:42Casa de Praia.
25:43I like, I like little towns.
25:45Like home.
25:46Yes.
25:47Here I get my favorite acai.
25:49This is the best acai in town.
25:52Yeah, let's go.
25:54Now, let's go.
25:55Now, let's go.
25:56Hello.
25:57With fruit.
25:58Oh, fruit fruit, tío.
26:02Come, come, come.
26:03The best has gone to the world.
26:12Mmm.
26:15Mmm.
26:16Good?
26:17It's delicious.
26:18Acai of luck.
26:19This will give me power for my contest tomorrow.
26:20Hopefully.
26:21Yeah.
26:22There it is.
26:23Oh, it's so fun.
26:24Beautiful, please.
26:25I'm so happy you're here.
26:27Me too.
26:28Me too.
26:29Yeah.
26:30Yeah.
26:31We'll get along, okay?
26:32Yeah.
26:33Way to do a good job.
26:34Yes.
26:35Good morning here in soccerima for the Corona Soccerima Pro.
26:36Our focus right now is on the women's rankings of the day.
26:38It's so fun.
26:39It's so fun.
26:40It's so fun.
26:41It's so fun.
26:42It's so fun.
26:43We'll do it.
26:44Let's do it.
26:45Yeah.
26:46I'm so happy you're here.
26:48Me too.
26:49Yeah.
26:50Yeah.
26:51Good morning here in soccerima for Corona Soccerima Pro.
26:58My focus right now is on the women's rankings of the day,
27:04the women's rankings, it's all gonna come down
27:07to this event.
27:08This is the last stop of the Challenger Series.
27:10This will tell us who will qualify
27:13for the championship tour next year.
27:15This event is big, so I'm feeling a little nervous.
27:18Every heat matters here.
27:20Because of my higher rankings,
27:21I skipped a round of 48,
27:23but it's still gonna take a lot to advance
27:25all the way through the finals.
27:27Sacrema is a pretty challenging wave,
27:29but it's really fun and it has a lot of power.
27:32I think it fits my surfing pretty well.
27:36It's the craziest place, there's so much going on.
27:38There's so many people, there's photos being taken
27:41and sweating, it's just the craziest setup.
27:45Conditions in Sacrema changed so fast.
27:47I've had my worst and my best moments in Sacrema,
27:50competing on the Juniors, QS, CT events.
27:54And for me, advancing through as much as I can here,
27:58it's really important, so I'm really focused
28:00and I'll give you everything I can.
28:03Overall, everyone's pretty excited to be here.
28:06There's only 10 women who, at the end of Brazil,
28:08know they're gonna be back on tour next year.
28:10So we're all fighting to be here again.
28:13They said I couldn't, so I did.
28:17A lot of preparation already happening this morning.
28:20When you look at pressure, this is kind of one
28:21of those catalyst moments for a lot of these people
28:23that are looking to qualify.
28:24The waves are gonna provide cheers and or tears.
28:29It's gonna be for sure a very tough competition.
28:31The last few competitions, I got pretty disappointed
28:51with my results.
28:52I thought I would do good in Portugal, in my hometown,
28:54and I ended up losing in the first round.
28:57But last year, this was my best result out here.
29:00So I'm just gonna take the same mindset
29:02as I did last year, and it went pretty well.
29:04You can't find a party with calm.
29:08No, you can't find it, or if you don't want to do it,
29:11I'm just gonna do it.
29:12So today's a tricky one.
29:15The wind picked up.
29:16The tide is really high.
29:18The waves are really hard.
29:20It looks like it's going to be waiting, right?
29:22Because of the wind.
29:24It looks like it's going to be like this.
29:26It looks like it's going to be like this,
29:27and it's going to be here.
29:28So we're going to try to adapt.
29:33Oh, we're going to do it.
29:35We're going to do it.
29:36We're going to do it.
29:43New heat out in the water
29:44with a former World Junior champ
29:46in the way of kick-up, Francisco Veselco.
29:49Francisco Veselco there, swooping around.
29:53Challenging conditions.
29:55It's really hard to be on the lineup
29:57and choosing the right ones
29:59because there's a lot of wind and bumps.
30:02Daniela.
30:03Nice big turn right there.
30:05So this turns into a competition
30:07of one or two big turns.
30:12Here comes kicker.
30:16Battling for some open faces,
30:18she's going to find none.
30:19Yeah.
30:20Look how chunky the wave is.
30:23That's frustrating.
30:24You can see she's going to make a swift paddle back out.
30:28Hopefully she will get one wave with less bumps
30:33and do two big turns.
30:35On the inside here,
30:37looks like it's going to be Leilani McGonagall.
30:39Going to get a little inside runner.
30:41Builds up some speed down the line,
30:43oncoming section.
30:45And she meets that with a beautiful turn right there.
30:50And we have Daniela Rosas, our Peruvian surfer.
30:55Daniela attacks the lift with that nice opening ride
30:59and a backable of 4.9.
31:01She's currently in the lead.
31:03Francisco Veselco, who is our top seed in this heat,
31:06is searching for a score.
31:08So Kika hasn't found a good one yet.
31:11She's trying to be where the good waves are,
31:16but it's always so bumpy.
31:19Take a look here at the 24-year-old Leilani McGonagall
31:22from Popones, Costa Rica.
31:25That was nice.
31:27And Leilani currently in second place.
31:29Now Thais is making an effort right there,
31:33using her priority.
31:36Nice wave with three turns on the backhand.
31:42Francisco needs a mid-range score
31:44to take that second place position off of Leilani.
31:51And Francisco.
31:53Okay.
31:54She's on her way.
31:55Just needs a mid-range.
31:57Combos two.
32:03Veselco comes in with a big number.
32:06She goes all the way to first.
32:08Take a look at the numbers here.
32:09A 7.67.
32:10We thought it was a mid-range score all day long.
32:13She went way past that.
32:14And she's into the lead.
32:16And she looks like she's on to the round of 32.
32:18It's like celebrating like I freaking won the event.
32:29I was like, yes!
32:31I'm really stoked.
32:32I'm like really happy even though it was just the first round.
32:36I don't know.
32:37I'm just super happy.
32:38And I still feel the adrenaline
32:41because I was like stressing out there.
32:44You know, Portugal I lost for such a little score.
32:48And it's been just such a hard like year for me
32:51that being able to like handle it until the end
32:54and being able to turn it around just means everything to me.
32:59Yeah.
33:06Just checking to see which wetsuits are dry.
33:09I only brought two this time.
33:10I usually bring a lot more but didn't want my bags to be that heavy.
33:16I feel like my biggest struggle on the Challenger Series this year
33:19was my mindset in competition.
33:23I'm going to try this board out today.
33:26I really struggled with my anxiety and doing well during heat.
33:33This is what I want to do and I love surfing.
33:35so I'm hoping to move past that and do well
33:38so I can make it back here next year.
33:42And we're ready to surf.
33:54We're on to another heat.
33:55Look at this setup.
33:56Eve Leula, Wong, Haina Hinkle, Talia Swindoll, and Alexia Monteiro.
34:06Talia Swindoll out of Malibu, California, the 18-year-old.
34:12Looking sharp so far.
34:13Alexia Monteiro, lacking the finish there.
34:21This is Eve Wong finding her first ride.
34:25And some smooth face in the wind on this wave.
34:28And Eve able to time the backwash there and gets a tidy finish.
34:32And Eve with a 5.83 on her first effort.
34:35Now she will need to find another gem to back it up.
34:40Oh, let's pay attention here to Alexia though.
34:43I feel Alexia did enough to get into the top with that effort.
34:49Alexia momentarily takes the lead.
34:52Eve Wong searching for some open face here.
34:55She got a couple S-turns.
34:57Really well served.
34:59Talia Swindoll though.
35:00Wow.
35:01Talk about a power snap right there.
35:02That could take her into a top two position.
35:05We'll see if Swindoll is able to displace Eve Leula Wong.
35:10Taina Hinkle trying to answer back in a rally here.
35:13And Taina also finishes off her ride.
35:16Gosh, so this is going to be all over the place in this final minute.
35:19Yeah, very tight heat.
35:21Eve Wong goes down.
35:23Taina Hinkle still chasing a 5.17.
35:26Feeling like she's on her way.
35:27A little snap there.
35:29And things just closed out on her.
35:33Wong.
35:38Eve Leula Wong throws it up there and just chops the top off of that right-hander.
35:44Alexia Montero taking a win.
35:46Eve is going to move on as well into the round of 32.
35:49I went that whole heat with two actual squirable waves and one in and out.
35:55So, I was kind of worrying the whole time.
35:58Definitely was never comfortable during that heat.
36:00I don't know, the conditions were really challenging.
36:02Being from Hawaii, I'm not used to water this cold.
36:05So, happy I made it through that one.
36:07I don't know.
36:08I don't know.
36:09I don't know.
36:10I don't know.
36:11I don't know.
36:12I don't know.
36:13I don't know.
36:14I don't know.
36:15I don't know.
36:16I don't know.
36:17Do you like coconut?
36:18Yeah, I love it.
36:19Oh, you should get a coconut water.
36:21They have really good fish here too.
36:23Yeah.
36:24This is my city.
36:25This is my town.
36:26It's a lot of food.
36:27It's not a lot.
36:28Mmm.
36:38Do you usually like get used to being away from home?
36:42Yeah.
36:43I don't know.
36:44I feel like I've been really kind of independent from a young age and I started traveling and
36:50when I was 13 years old, I went by myself for the first time to Australia.
36:55And I don't know.
36:56I've kind of, I'm used to being kind of away.
37:00And it's good.
37:01I have the opportunity to bring my coach with me, which even if you're far away from home,
37:07it feels like home because we have such a good connection and we've known each other for so many years.
37:13Being able to bring him everywhere, it's great as a coach and as like also like an emotional support.
37:21Aww.
37:22Yeah.
37:23Yeah, I know that.
37:24So.
37:25I love that because it's exactly how I feel like with my dad too.
37:28And I think we make our own home while we're traveling.
37:33I actually got so used to this life where we are always traveling.
37:37Then when I get home, I'm just like, okay, like what's next?
37:40Like, I can't stay home too long.
37:43I'm home.
37:44I recharge.
37:45I'm with my family, my brothers.
37:47Do you guys surf together all the time or like do you usually?
37:50Weekends, yeah.
37:51On weekends.
37:52My mom still surfs.
37:53Your mom still surfs?
37:54Yeah.
37:55Really?
37:56Yeah.
37:57Do you guys surf together?
37:58Yeah.
37:59That's sick.
38:00No way.
38:01No way.
38:02Yeah, yeah.
38:03She catches waves by herself, of course.
38:05That's so cool.
38:06But sometimes she's like paddling and I just paddle harder and I give her that extra push.
38:11I love that.
38:12It's so funny because she used to do it and now like I'm helping her out.
38:16She still surfs good, actually.
38:17Really?
38:18Yeah.
38:19How did like you and your brother started surfing?
38:23My dad opened a surf shop and my mom used to work at the surf shop.
38:27And my mom and my dad got married when Gabriel was like nine.
38:32My dad kind of introduced surfing for Gabriel.
38:35They both had like surfing lifestyle and they loved surfing.
38:39But they never really like told us like, oh, go surf.
38:43Or like, I asked for my surfboard.
38:46My mom wanted us to have surfing in our lives.
38:48Not professionally or not something that we would make our life out of it.
38:52But just like to have surfing in our lives.
38:55And Gabriel just became what he became.
38:58And I got inspired by that.
39:01I saw him winning and I was like, huh.
39:05I want to win too.
39:07Surfing is way more than just surfing.
39:09Like all the places you get to travel, like the moments you live with the people you love.
39:15You share laughs, like everything's just so different than any other sport.
39:22I don't know.
39:23It just molds us as humans as well.
39:26Super sick.
39:27Yeah.
39:28Yeah.
39:45Feel good?
39:46Yeah.
39:47Now it's time to get things done in Brazil too.
39:50The waves are different.
39:51Have you practiced already?
39:52I surfed a couple of days with Jesse.
39:54It was good.
39:55But I know Saguarema, it changes so much.
39:58Yeah, because it's a tricky wave here.
40:00And tricky beach breaks are always tricky for us, you know.
40:03But you can do it, just be smart.
40:06But well, we'll work it out.
40:08I'm glad you came.
40:09I really miss the dad-coach relationship.
40:13Yeah.
40:14So I got the job again?
40:15Yes.
40:16Since you fired me?
40:17No, we'll see if I hire you again.
40:19After this week.
40:20Since you fired me a few years ago.
40:23You were too young.
40:26I said something and you, ah, you're the drama.
40:30No, so.
40:31I did drama, but I'm more mature now, so.
40:35But if I look, when I was like 15 or 16, when we traveled together,
40:40I couldn't manage connecting with you as a dad and a coach.
40:44But now, since I'm older, I realized those things really weren't a problem.
40:51Like I could handle them, you know.
40:54You're 21 now.
40:55I'm not 13 anymore, so.
40:57Because I'm going to tell you the truth, you know.
40:59I always tell you, you surf very good.
41:02You surf so nice.
41:03You have power.
41:04But still, you have to change a little bit your tactics, and you're surfing for the judges.
41:12Not for you.
41:13Judges is different.
41:14They're waiting for the scores, and they want to see some things that you need to give to the judges.
41:20It's not like free surfing.
41:22So, yeah, we're going to...
41:24Adjust.
41:25Adjust.
41:26And I need to hear the truth because I don't have time to reflect.
41:29Sometimes I go from one comp to another, and sometimes it's hard to remind yourself
41:34and have someone that knows you so much.
41:37So you know me very well.
41:39The truth is the truth.
41:40Black and white.
41:41You make a hit because you did this.
41:42You didn't make it because you did this.
41:43This is your mistake.
41:44You fix this, or you win, or you lose.
41:47Easy.
41:48Well, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you who taught me to surf.
41:55So I'm very grateful for all your patience with me and moments you were with me.
42:01And yeah, for showing me this new way of living.
42:05Surfing, enjoying, competing.
42:07I'm very grateful for you to have been on my way.
42:11It's not easy, but I can tell you you love it.
42:15So keep going.
42:16Keep going.
42:17That's what we're here for.
42:18I didn't come all this way.
42:21I got to finish strong.
42:24Let's get work.
42:26Let's get ready.
42:27Let's get ready.
42:28Coming from that ninth place in Ariceira, I feel like I'm in a good spot and a good momentum.
42:45And I just want to keep using that energy from Portugal to Brazil and finish the year off strong.
42:53I'm here for a reason and I want to be the best and I want to keep going as much as I can.
43:20Opening round for the women out in the water.
43:25So Aguirre, Nanaho Suzuki, Vera Harris, and Malia Moana Lima.
43:33Here we go.
43:35And this is going to be the start here for our Japanese competitor.
43:39This is Nanaho Suzuki.
43:40Ooh.
43:41Sharp first turn for Nanaho.
43:43Oh.
43:44Almost it up.
43:45Big smile on Nanaho Suzuki's face.
43:48And she gained a 6.67 on her first effort.
43:53Malia Moana Lima.
43:55And just, I guess, some sticky rails right there from the surfer from Hawaii.
44:00Her first Challenger Series event here in Sajarela.
44:03No waves written by Sol Aguirre.
44:09Nearing the halfway point in this heat.
44:11Sol hasn't caught a wave yet, which I'm really surprised about.
44:13She's usually a very quick starter.
44:15Traveling with her father, Herman, who was a former pro from Peru as well.
44:19And 17 minutes to go, she's been successful in the past year, but wants to get things going soon.
44:25And here goes Sol.
44:28Banks off the top.
44:29She's going to rely on a single turn for her opening score.
44:33She's a good one.
44:34She's a good one.
44:35So Sol opening up.
44:36Four-point ride.
44:37Just checked in.
44:42Yeah, Ari's on the backhand.
44:45Couple of taps on the back.
44:46And goes complete there.
44:48So that's going to help her effort.
44:49Already has a 4.33.
44:50Sol Aguirre behind her.
44:52Sol lining up this inside.
44:55We know she's got a vicious layback, but, oh, I've mistimed that.
44:58Yes, she does.
44:59And unfortunately for her, that wave just not offering up a lot of scoring potential.
45:03It's going to be a throwaway.
45:11Here's Vera.
45:14Oh, nice timing on that one.
45:16And a finish.
45:17So that's really good for her cause.
45:19She's going to ditch that 3.17 she has in her scoreline and increase her margin over Sol Aguirre.
45:25And there she is.
45:26I mean, she's a smart competitor.
45:27And lookit, she's not rattled at all.
45:29Almost with a little grin on her face.
45:31Vera and Sol very close, but it's going to be decision time.
45:38If there's multiple waves in a set, there's enough for two waves to hit the sandbank right now.
45:42Here we go.
45:43On the move.
45:44Sol Aguirre is going to force the issue.
45:46Vera's going to use her priority.
45:48All right.
45:49So that got done now.
45:50Sol just needs to catch a wave in the next 20 seconds.
45:54And surf for a mid-range score.
45:57Andras!
45:58Mary!
46:02Oh.
46:03One more.
46:04I mean, she might be able to get into this in time.
46:06Oh.
46:07Yeah, she's going to have time.
46:08It's just that if this wave will have shape.
46:11Looks like it's doubling up on the inside here.
46:13It's going to be a struggle.
46:15There she goes.
46:16Sol Aguirre.
46:17And...
46:23Finally finds open face.
46:25Pretty vicious snap there, but had a lot of downtime to get into that open face.
46:30You can just see when she's set up, there are already probably many different emotions coming down on her right there, Kaipo.
46:36And, you know, outside of qualifying for the Olympics, the ninth place finish in Eteseda, this has been, you know, by her standards, a year that she...
46:44Tough year.
46:45Yeah.
46:46Doesn't want to remember.
46:47You know, she wants to forget about it. Look towards 2025 now.
46:50Sol Aguirre and Malia Lima eliminated from competition.
46:53I don't know what to say.
47:04All I know is I don't want to feel bad because I gave everything and the waves didn't cooperate too much.
47:14I don't know.
47:15I don't know.
47:16I did my best, and that's all I can say.
47:24Like, I'm happy how it turned out even though I didn't advance.
47:29I don't know. I did my best and that's all I can say. Like I'm happy how it turned out even though I didn't advance. My year has been amazing and yeah, nothing can define me so I'm just gonna keep moving forward and just enjoy surfing.
47:55I think I've done good enough and I just have time to relax now.
48:11Welcome back to the Corona Sacorema Pro. Big round out there for the women right now. It's the round of 32.
48:17It's been a tough year for me competitively but I've finally hit the turning point. I'm not letting anything get in the way for me to make it to the top.
48:25I feel like the last few events I've been surfing more like myself and it feels really good.
48:33This is the last event of the season to prove to myself that I can make it to the championship tour.
48:38I need to make it to the top 10. If I don't, I won't be able to qualify for the Challenger Series next year and all the current momentum that I worked so hard for will stop.
48:51I don't know who's more nervous, whether it's Sofia or Charlie, but he does seem a bit concerned.
48:57I mean, he's like, heил Degas.
48:58Detroit – just, you have to see as far as we all are hitting in the match of the championship video game, but I am a little bit
49:05like that.

49:07He's had a shepherd for our minutes of the four running to last year.
