Trump signs fentanyl crackdown bill, links tariffs on China to drug crisis

Calling it "a historic step toward justice," US President Donald Trump signs the Halt Fentanyl Act into law, vowing tougher penalties for traffickers and permanently classifying all fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I narcotics. Trump says the law delivers a "righteous blow" to drug cartels and justifies a 20 percent tariff on China as a "penalty," blaming Beijing for much of the fentanyl entering the United States.

00:00And this is not an auto pen, right?
00:13That's for sure.
00:15Thank you very much.
00:21In this position today, we strike a righteous blow to the drug dealers, narcotic traffickers,
00:29and criminal cartels that we've all been hearing so much about for so many years.
00:34And very little has been done.
00:36And we take a historic step toward justice for every family touched by the fentanyl scourge
00:43as we sign the Halt Fentanyl Act into Law.
00:48Good job.
00:50With this bill, we are officially and permanently classifying all fentanyl-related substances
00:55as Schedule I narcotics, which is actually a very big deal.
01:00It doesn't sound like much.
01:02It's a big deal, as they will tell you.
01:05Meaning anyone caught trafficking these illicit poisons will be punished with a mandatory
01:1010-year minimum sentence in prison.
01:15We'll be getting the drug dealers, pushers, and peddlers off our street.
01:19And we will not rest until we have ended the drug overdose epidemic.
01:24For years, the monsters who manufacture illicit fentanyl have sought to skirt legal restrictions
01:31by making minor variations of the chemical compound.
01:34And in the process, they've developed even more toxic versions of the drug.
01:39One common variant known as carfentanyl is a very, it's becoming more and more common.
01:47It's 100 times more potent than the original version of fentanyl.
01:54Can you imagine? Look at what you have to say.
01:56And more and more dangerous.
01:57And as you know, and I have a very good relationship with President Xi of China,
02:02but I imposed a 20% tariff on China because of the fentanyl, and I call it a penalty.
02:09It's a penalty because China delivers much of the fentanyl.
02:13Some people would say, oh, we have a 20%.
02:15So they pay billions of dollars in, billions of dollars in damages for what they've done.
02:22And I think we're going to work it out so that China is going to end up going from that
02:26to giving the death penalty to the people that create this fentanyl and send it into our country for the death penalty.
02:35The death penalty is going to be imposed on people from China that make fentanyl and send it into our country.
02:42I believe that's going to happen soon.
02:44But as of today, all fentanyl related substances will be banned forever.
02:48And those who traffic in these deadly poisons will be put behind bars for a very long period of time.
03:05We'll see you next time.
03:06Bye.
