Australian PM Albanese eyes ‘constructive discussions’ on trade, security with China

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says his China trip is an opportunity to have "constructive discussions" on a range of issues including trade and security, as he wraps up the trip after visiting a giant panda nursery house in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

"We have worked very hard to stabilize the relationship that has brought benefits with over $20 billion of trade resuming and removal of impediments," Albanese tells reporters, adding that the two countries have signed two-way trade and two-way tourism agreements.

Albanese was on his second visit to China as prime minister, seeking to bolster recently stabilized trade ties even as geopolitical tensions remain high.

00:00It was an opportunity to have constructive discussions across a range of issues.
00:05Security, our relationship including people to people and importantly our trade.
00:11We want to continue to work.
00:15We have worked very hard to stabilise the relationship that has brought benefits
00:19with over $20 billion of trade resuming and removal of impediments.
00:27During this trip as well we signed agreements for further two-way trade resumption
00:34and in addition to that we agreed on the promotion of two-way tourism as well.
00:41The relationship with President Xi is warm and engaging.
00:45We have had four bilateral meetings but have also engaged at other times as well on an informal basis.
00:52That's a positive thing.
00:53President Xi sent a very warm message of congratulations as did other leaders after the May 3 election.
01:01Overwhelmingly what we discuss as moving forward is issues of today and tomorrow rather than the past
01:08and it's something that I very much have concentrated on.
01:13What I speak about is the potential that's there to grow the relationship,
01:18to develop further economic ties.
01:21We of course, as I've said repeatedly, we cooperate where we can, we disagree where we must
01:29but we don't want those disagreements to define our relationship either.
01:34The goals are advancing Australia's national interests
01:36and I'd say that you don't go from a position of where we were into absolute agreement on everything.
01:50That's not the goal.
01:51We have different political systems but it has been constructive
01:55and it has been an important step in the developing of our relationship, which is important.
02:02not just for Australia and China, but I make this point as well.
02:08Around our region, the Great Wall of China symbolises the extraordinary history and culture here in China
02:16and showing a bit of respect to people never cost anything.
02:21But you know what it does?
02:23It gives you a reward.
