00:01This is Errori, a breathtaking part of North Wales
00:05that draws visitors in their millions.
00:09But this wild landscape can also hold dangers.
00:15And when things go wrong,
00:17the busiest network of rescue agencies in the country
00:21must come together.
00:26Saving lives.
00:28I like it down there.
00:30In a landscape like no other.
00:34That's a proper job there.
00:47There's a lot that the area has to offer
00:50from a nature perspective, from a geology perspective,
00:54from learning to navigate and rock climb.
00:58I love this bit here. It's like a ladder.
01:04But things can go from good to bad real quick.
01:11It's then that the skills of Errori's rescue teams
01:14are pushed right to the edge.
01:16If you have an accident and you've come off a known path or a common area,
01:22we've got an intimate knowledge of the mountains,
01:26which allows us to get in and out, sometimes easier than others.
01:30Trevan, in the Ogwen Valley.
01:39It's known as a little mountain that bites back.
01:42It's amazing, sir.
01:43You're helping out.
01:44Just come across a chap that seems to have fallen and broken his leg.
01:46He looks like he's hit his head.
01:47Like he's really covered in blood.
01:48It's pretty bad.
01:49Don't say, where are you?
01:50On the west face of Trevan.
01:52I'm at the base of Notch Arete.
01:55A climber called Ray has fallen 30 feet from Trevan's north ridge,
02:12a notorious climbing route known as Notch Arete.
02:16Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team is put on standby.
02:33The casualty was solo climbing without ropes.
02:38He was found by another chap
02:41who just happened to be in the same location at the same time.
02:45which is just unbelievably lucky.
02:49But the casualty is in a dangerous position,
02:52surrounded by sheer drops.
02:55And with a serious head injury like this,
02:58every second counts.
03:00So the Coast Guard rescue helicopter is also called in.
03:10The west face of Trevan is challenging.
03:13There is loose rock.
03:15There are steep drops.
03:17Limited or no phone signal.
03:19Well, the casualty was, if you had slipped again,
03:23you would have gone quite a long way down the side of the mountain.
03:27A winch paramedic is lowered onto the ridge,
03:37where the passer-by who raised the alarm is waiting with rain.
03:41He had a head injury, which looked quite severe.
03:57He also had an injury to his lower leg,
04:00which, again, we assessed as being severe.
04:04His blood pressure dropped.
04:09So I was concerned that he had internal bleeding.
04:12Ray needs urgent medical care.
04:16But the ledge he's on is so narrow,
04:18the paramedic can't get him into a stretcher on his own.
04:24He needs Mountain Rescue's help.
04:26And taking the volunteers up by helicopter will save vital time.
04:31Is he dumping us on the North Ridge?
04:35Yeah.
04:37It's not uncommon to be winched down.
04:51If they can't land, then they'll just lower us down.
04:58Anything like that is essential
05:00for getting the casualty to the hospital quicker.
05:04We got lowered down onto what can only be described
05:09as the most precarious rock,
05:12about the size of a dining table to land on.
05:16It was really windy from the propellers.
05:21I'm going down.
05:23But listen.
05:24Very loose.
05:29Hello, mate. You all right?
05:31It's Ray.
05:32Hey, Ray. How you doing?
05:33Oh, listen. Well, all right?
05:34Don't be bad for it.
05:35Just more medicine, antibiotics to stop in
05:38and the cuts you've got and maybe bony.
05:40I think I put it on the floor.
05:41Any worse?
05:44You all right, Ray?
05:45No.
05:46Did you just take a little slip
05:48or a handle came off or lose your footing
05:50or something?
05:51What, here?
05:52Yeah.
05:53Well, I'm not sure what happened.
05:58I've got it, buddy, so you might go now.
06:00The ledge is just a few feet wide
06:03with a sheer drop on one side.
06:06There's no margin for error.
06:08There's six of us in a small area.
06:13I can't move anywhere.
06:15Hang on.
06:18What do you want?
06:19Just get it straight over the top of the patient?
06:20Yep.
06:23And due to the nature of the casualties injuries,
06:25we had to be careful about moving him.
06:27We need to be really careful of his headlock
06:29and we need to be really careful of his lower left leg,
06:32all right?
06:33Yeah.
06:34This might hurt a little bit, mate, all right?
06:36But once you're in,
06:37what we're hoping is you're back to where you were
06:39on the painstall, all right?
06:40Oh, come on.
06:41OK.
06:42Hold on.
06:43Hold on.
06:44Hold on.
06:45Go.
06:46Hold on down.
06:47Down.
06:48That's my head.
06:49You all right, Ray?
06:50Keep talking.
06:51It was a real challenge to get the stretcher underneath him
06:54without him sliding off down the mountain again.
06:57He's slipping quite a bit down.
06:58OK.
06:59Just so you know.
07:00Sliding up a bit again if you can.
07:01And to ensure his safety and his injuries
07:04weren't prodded and poked on the way,
07:06which probably would have hurt quite a lot.
07:08OK.
07:09Ready.
07:10Race lifts.
07:11Fingers down.
07:12Are you here?
07:13Yeah.
07:14OK, next.
07:15Sweet.
07:16Nice, brilliant.
07:17That's what I'm all right.
07:18936.
07:19Mobile.
07:20936.
07:21With Ray secured,
07:25the helicopter moves in to winch him out.
07:28I'll leave my bag there.
07:30It's going to get really windy.
07:32And the rescuers hold on tight
07:35so the powerful downdraft doesn't blow them off the mountainside.
07:392 hours since the call-out, Ray is on track with her,
07:42but it's going to tell no more.
07:43You didn't need to stop just the leap.
07:44You didn't want to walk the helmet then.
07:45I'm leaving the mordraft,
07:46and I'll have to get a good idea.
07:47I'll have to get up and get up and rattle on the ride.
07:48I'll be having trouble.
07:49They'll be having trouble.
07:50They've got me in my bag at the table.
07:51They're not needed them,
07:52but they're not needed.
07:53It's going to be $1,000 or $2,000.
07:54Two hours since the call-out, Ray is on his way to hospital.
08:16Leaving Mountain Rescue to head back down on foot.
08:20People don't plan to have accidents, but things happen.
08:28I joined the Mountain Rescue team after myself and a friend went climbing in the Lake District
08:35and we ended up falling off the cliff.
08:40And I had a serious head injury, he broke lots of bones.
08:44I was unconscious and so we had to call out the Mountain Rescue team.
08:48Mountain Rescue saved my life and I felt like that was a debt I needed to repay.
08:57Four months later.
09:02Ray is back in a hurry.
09:04Hello. Are you Ray?
09:12I am.
09:12Gosh.
09:13Hello Chris.
09:14You've changed a lot since I've seen you last.
09:16I've been coming to the Mountain for a very long time.
09:20I think the first rock climb I did was here in the Ogwin Valley.
09:25However, just because you're experienced doesn't mean to say you can't come to grief in the mountains.
09:32What was your final tally of injuries?
09:34Open fracture to tibia and fibula.
09:37Yeah.
09:37The lower back and neck.
09:41And a couple of broken teeth.
09:43I'm massively appreciative.
09:45It would have been quite easy to have died that day.
09:50Well, you are a very, very lucky man.
09:52I know.
09:53Yeah, absolutely.
09:54I'm so grateful that they got to me as quickly as they did.
09:59But not everyone who visits Errori is headed for the mountains.
10:13We cover the beach, headland, cliff and as a rule of thumb, we cover to the first major road or the fence lining away from a coastal path.
10:22Helping keep people safe along this spectacular coastline is the job of the Coast Guard.
10:33The total amount of distance we cover is about 1,400 kilometres within North Wales.
10:38The team from Criciath specialise in cliff rescues.
10:43Ideal for the granite headland of Llanbedrog.
10:52It's quite a good, quite sheer drop in places onto massive rocks.
11:02You've got overhangs, you've got cracks, you've got inverts, outwards.
11:07Each one is different.
11:09It's a good thing I enjoy.
11:11And just as each cliff face is different, so too is every casualty.
11:17Buzz is a very energetic puppy.
11:26Justine's been visiting the Llan Peninsula since she was a child.
11:29And the only family member who loves it more than her is 11-month-old spaniel, Buzz.
11:36Do you see him like our baby?
11:38He is jumping at you if you're not taking him out for a walk.
11:43You only need to say the word beach and his little head picks up.
11:47It was a gorgeous Sunday morning.
11:51Weather was perfect.
11:52I decided to go for a lovely headland walk.
11:55Buzz just runs off.
11:56You can hear him barking away.
12:00As we went down the path and it bears around the corner, it suddenly went very quiet.
12:07And there were two people walking towards us, so we just stopped them and just said,
12:11Have you seen a black dog coming past you?
12:14And they just said, no.
12:15And as soon as they said no, there was nowhere else for him to have gone.
12:18And that sickening fear just hit us.
12:22It's gone over the edge.
12:23Hi, the dog's gone over the cliff.
12:33The dog has gone over the cliff, okay.
12:37I keep shouting him on the east.
12:39What's his name?
12:40Buzz, B-U-Z-Z, husband, Buzz Lightyear.
12:43Make sure you don't get too close to the edge yourself, will you?
12:46Okay, we're going to get some help for you, so try not to worry.
12:49Buzz has run off the coastal path and over the edge of the cliff at Trwyn Llanbedrog.
13:02Coast Guard volunteer teams from Cricket and Ybersoch get the call.
13:13We've got a first aid bag in this.
13:15We've got a first aid bag in this.
13:15We've got a first aid bag in this.
13:19Yeah.
13:19Do you know what they're half, Osh?
13:21Yeah.
13:22Yeah.
13:26There's a bit of urgency to get there because the general public tend to try and help
13:30or try and get down themselves.
13:32You don't want it to escalate where a member of public is hurt.
13:37There you go.
13:38It's eating the way of the rustling on the cove here.
13:41Yeah, just there, see?
13:42Yeah.
13:42Okay, yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
13:49We were shouting his name over and over again and it was just silence and we just thought, he can't be alive, he's got to be dead.
13:57You can't survive a fall like that.
14:00It was a long fall.
14:02It was about 100 foot maybe.
14:03We didn't know the condition of the dog, so you've got to treat it as the worst case scenario.
14:10It's now been more than an hour since Buzz fell.
14:14Hey, okay?
14:16There's a team coming out.
14:18Is he underneath?
14:19Yeah.
14:20What are you doing for?
14:21Charlie John to Nick there.
14:23Okay.
14:23An experienced climber on the beach below has managed to get up to the dog.
14:29You want to step a little bit back for now?
14:32He's alive, but they can't tell how badly he's injured or get him off the cliff.
14:38You're on a yo-yo of emotions.
14:40Anyone who comes over to you and says, are you okay, how are you doing?
14:43Burst into tears.
14:48Yeah.
14:50Ashley and the team set up a rope system.
14:52So they can safely get down the overgrown cliff.
14:57One operator puts a harness on, peeks over, see what the terrain's like.
15:02Yeah, look up.
15:03Yeah.
15:04Right, let's go main.
15:07A slack, have a safety place.
15:10Yeah.
15:11Yeah, I'm on my way down now.
15:14Okay.
15:16Open up this.
15:18Yeah.
15:18All good.
15:19Yeah.
15:22Okay.
15:31Is that okay?
15:33We're going to be overhang arras when you do go see a bit, okay?
15:35Yeah.
15:35Stop.
15:44Stop.
15:44Stop.
15:45Stop.
15:46Stop.
15:46On safety.
15:50Having short legs.
15:53Got chucked about quite a bit, so it was quite hard.
15:55We just put, um, safety out with me, please.
16:00You're fighting against two ropes.
16:02You've got the main line, you've got safety line.
16:04So there's massive strain on the ropes.
16:06Lock off, safety.
16:07Locked off, safety.
16:09Just hard work.
16:11There's trees and foliage and bracken.
16:13You have to work through that.
16:15It's a massive fight all the way down.
16:28Hey, you okay?
16:31Cliff top, um, cliff jacket.
16:33I'm with the dog now.
16:35Over.
16:35They've made it to Buzz.
16:42Now, they just have to get him down.
16:45Checking he's going to get into this bag for me?
16:48Uh, I think you'll let me pick your boat.
16:50Yeah, cool.
16:55Isn't that jumper?
16:56It's your mum's jumper there, mate.
16:58We have a big red bag.
17:03Some dogs get scared of that.
17:05It's okay.
17:06It's okay.
17:08That's it.
17:09There we go.
17:11It's okay.
17:17Cliff top, cliff tech.
17:20Yeah, go ahead.
17:21For your information and the owner's information,
17:24the dog's in the bag safe.
17:26Yeah, that's accurate.
17:28A bit faster on me.
17:30Carrying Buzz,
17:32Ashley carefully makes his way down to the beach.
17:37But it was just horrendous boulders and black thorn.
17:43We're nearly there, lad.
17:56Hey, Buzz.
17:57Phew.
17:58We got some of my flat for him.
18:01Yeah.
18:02Hi, just to let you know,
18:03the dog is on the ground,
18:05uh, off the cliff now.
18:07Go ahead, go ahead, run.
18:09Go ahead, darling.
18:10You got to.
18:10Sit down.
18:10Sit down.
18:11Sit down.
18:12Sit down.
18:12Sit down, okay?
18:13Sit down.
18:14Okay?
18:15Okay?
18:15Okay?
18:19I'm still drunk.
18:22Good boy.
18:23It's not just a dog to the owner.
18:38It's not just a dog to the owner.
18:42It's not just a dog to the owner.
18:44We're not there to judge whether it's a dog, whether it's a person.
18:57Good boy.
18:58It's a miracle.
19:01A buzzy miracle, we call it.
19:03As well as the natural wonders of Aruri, some elements of this dramatic landscape were created
19:19by humans, including a network of mines and quarries that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
19:27These holes have been dug in the ground over decades.
19:30These create incredibly dramatic scenes.
19:34Today, social media is pulling in newcomers keen to explore these secret spots.
19:40They're not open to the public as such, but as soon as you put something on social media,
19:44everybody's going to go there.
19:45They're the first of the ladders that are in and on are going up there, look.
19:50It's been mildly terrifying.
19:52But they haven't come for a history lesson.
19:55They're here for adventure.
19:57Like trainee nurse, Charlie.
19:59I'm very outgoing, I would say.
20:02I'm adventurous.
20:03And her boyfriend, Nathaniel.
20:05We use social media to see all these amazing places, and then we figure out how we're going to get to it.
20:10We wake up and say, oh, we're going here.
20:12It's just spontaneous all the time.
20:15It's October.
20:20Charlie, Nathaniel and two of their friends are planning their next adventure.
20:26On the night before, Nathaniel said that they had something planned for us.
20:30They wouldn't show us the TikTok.
20:33So it was a complete surprise.
20:34The quarries at Denorwick are made up of numerous ridges and tunnels.
20:42And you go from that extreme, high, steep walls, dramatic edges, to slate debris that hasn't been compacted or in any way.
20:50It's just lying there.
20:51It's hazardous.
20:53It's decaying.
20:55There are rockfalls.
20:57So it is a changing environment.
20:59So when we got there, there was like a lagoon, blue, crystal clear water.
21:09We saw loads of caves, and then we actually found the surprise.
21:14A hidden waterfall.
21:15It was so pretty.
21:21We got up quite high, and we were all fine.
21:23We were all enjoying it.
21:28And then as we were getting down, that's when everything went really bad.
21:33Gradient was steep, very steep.
21:39Everything that we were standing on was just crumbling away.
21:42The slate was just falling from underneath his feet, slippy, slidy everywhere we went.
21:47And I was like, Charlie, I can't think of a way down without one of us getting seriously injured.
21:54Their friends managed to find the safe route off the rock face.
21:58But as they've gone down, I think they took the stable.
22:03Rocks and stuff with them, so there was no way for me and Nathaniel to get down at all.
22:08They're stuck.
22:10In a part of the Norwich Slate Quarry known as Sink Gallad, or California Hall.
22:16They can't climb back up, and there's a steep drop below them.
22:21They need help.
22:22Stay sheltered. Don't move from where you want to know what people get to you and talk directly to you.
22:36Llanberis Mountain Rescue volunteers set out.
22:42We initially approached the quarry from above.
22:44The back of the quarry is a sheer cliff, completely crumbling, falling apart.
22:53And I can think it's probably get in there.
22:57You can see below them, they're just above a small spree float.
23:04Yeah.
23:05They're thick, two at the bottom.
23:10You can see them down below.
23:12The pair were halfway up this face, in amongst an area of rock steps and just very loose ground.
23:17There was definitely a potential for them to injure themselves if they'd tried to move from where they were.
23:24I can't remember if we can get down very easily from here, or whether we have to go all the way back.
23:29But although they can see the stranded pair, actually getting to them is another matter.
23:35They were at the top of the cliff opposite us, and then I think they were trying to work out a way to come to us.
23:41The decision then was that we needed to come in from a lower tunnel.
23:51Meanwhile, Charlie and Nathaniel are left wondering what's happening.
23:58We thought they were going to come straight for us.
24:01So when they left, it were like, where have they gone?
24:05On the day of the rescue, there was actually a named storm blowing around, so quite strong winds.
24:14We had 70 mile an hour winds.
24:18Bits of slate, like, flicking up.
24:22Got, like, little cuts on us from the winds blowing it straight at us faces.
24:27We're in such an open area, it was freezing.
24:30Obviously scared.
24:32And we were holding on for dear life.
24:35It takes the team around 20 minutes to climb down, and make their way to the tunnels,
24:46which will bring them out just below Charlie and Nathaniel's position.
25:00He's got a drill!
25:01Finally, the team work out the best way to reach them.
25:06Keep one more person up there.
25:08A difficult climb up a steep, slippery rock face.
25:12I'm going to tie in for this red rope somewhere.
25:15Yeah, OK.
25:17Hello!
25:24Right.
25:24Yeah, I'm climbing.
25:27Lovely.
25:44Hi, guys.
25:45at last the team gets charlie and nathaniel secured with ropes
25:59relief straight away we knew we were going to be okay once they arrived
26:08what's your name nathaniel i'm dave
26:10thank you when we saw them it was relief and i was saying to charlie whatever they say to you
26:19if they say to you let go let go they put all your trust in them
26:26stand up characters put all your weight on the road
26:35now they can start lowering them back down the rock face
26:38the abseiling was scary because it was my first time doing it i was just scared about making one wrong move
26:49but at the end it was completely fine
26:53okay nice one nathaniel you happy
26:56nice nearly down yep we're on the right angle
27:00hello hello we've landed on death all right well let's
27:09i've constantly got it on my head that i nearly killed my best friend
27:12and couldn't find the words to apologize
27:21that is excellent news and many thanks for that update pete let us know when people are safely
27:28back down on terra firma when i got to the bottom i could have kissed the floor
27:35i was shaking i was shaking quite a lot actually
27:38it felt like i'd
