00:01This is Errori.
00:03A breathtaking part of North Wales that draws visitors in their millions.
00:10But this wild landscape can also hold dangers.
00:15And when things go wrong,
00:18the busiest network of rescue agencies in the country must come together.
00:27Saving lives.
00:30In a landscape like no other.
00:34That's a proper job there.
00:47Errori has got busier.
00:50Without question, yeah.
00:53It's a very picturesque, very, very beautiful place.
00:56So naturally people want to go and have that experience themselves.
01:00Many of the four million people who visit Errori each year head for the area's most famous hotspots.
01:07Like Errori, or Snowdon, Wales and England's highest peak.
01:11First time I went up Snowdon, I was about 11, 12 years of age.
01:23When we did it, it was quiet. There weren't that many people on it.
01:27These days, Errori attracts some 600,000 visitors a year.
01:34Errori is a 24-hour mountain, 365 days a year. There's always people on it.
01:39People go up there, ticking lists really.
01:44The classic sort of, oh, we've done Snowdon.
01:48Sadly, because of the volume of people that we get, we also get a higher volume of accidents.
01:52It's an August bank holiday weekend, and visitors are out in their droves.
02:01So it's no surprise when a call comes in for help.
02:03A woman called Sarah has fallen 20 foot from one of the Rwydfa's most famous walking routes.
02:17Llybyr Ymwynwyr, or the Miner's Track.
02:20She's now badly hurt, near the shore of Llyn Glaslyn.
02:24It's a job for Llanberis Mountain Rescue.
02:32She's near the shore of Llyn Glaslyn, so probably on the path from intersection down the steps.
02:40It is a path, but it is steep, and there are a series of quite slippery, rocky slabs.
02:46We can drive, to a certain extent, up the Miner's Path.
03:05And the path was very busy.
03:09That in itself gives an added challenge.
03:14This is as far as the 4x4 can go.
03:25World's heaviest bag on that.
03:29They'll have to do the last 15 minutes on foot.
03:32He's described a 20-foot tumbling fall cut to the head, injury to neck, shoulder, and casualty's name is Sarah.
03:44I was heading down the Miner's Path.
03:50I could see the lakes, so I was nearly at the bottom.
03:54And then my feet just went from underneath me.
03:57I remember being face down, sliding down the bank, which felt really fast, and sort of thinking to myself, I don't know how to start.
04:06I must have hit my head, because I think I lost consciousness. And I knew I'd hurt my back. I've never felt pain like that before.
04:27So, obviously, you've got a bug on your head. My head. My neck. Your neck. Shoulder.
04:37She was conscious and breathing, and those are the first two things which are of importance.
04:42Can I have a finger from this hand, please?
04:48The casualty had a cut to her head, and she was also complaining of discomfort in her lower back.
04:56It rings immediate alarm bells.
04:58The pain in my lower back just felt like a sharp pain, and it wouldn't go away. It was constant.
05:19Score five out of ten when sat still, but increases on movement.
05:24Worst case scenario, that could be involving some sort of spinal cord injury, a pelvic injury, which are obviously both quite serious.
05:32They give her an inhalable painkiller.
05:38We are now giving three milligram head throx.
05:41Whistle this time over.
05:43That'll help with the pain, so get some good rest of that in here before you try and move.
05:47Big breaths in and out.
05:49We have to make sure that we get them to a hospital where we have access to better resources to find out what is actually wrong with that person.
05:59Are you happy to transport her on stretcher?
06:04We were thinking aircraft with the possible LZB in Glasgow.
06:08Roger, that's all copied. We'll be back in touch shortly with it.
06:13They're going to put a question.
06:14If we have any indication that she might have a spinal injury, we'll call 936.
06:19They call in the Coast Guard helicopter to get Sarah to hospital as quickly as possible.
06:25The lad down there, we just want to keep people up there for a short while. That's good. Thank you.
06:26Yes, sir.
06:27They need to get Sarah onto a stretcher.
06:31We're going to do a bit of a lift, and then we're going to slide this underneath you. Okay?
06:32But she's in extreme pain.
06:33Lift your feet up, Sarah.
06:34Lift your feet up, Sarah.
06:35Well done. Well done, Sarah.
06:36Remember the breezy fist box in as well?
06:37Yeah.
06:38We just want to keep people up there for a short one. That's good. Thank you.
06:43They need to get Sarah onto a stretcher.
06:45We're going to do a bit of a lift, and then we're going to slide this underneath you, OK?
06:51But she's in extreme pain.
06:54Lift your feet up, Sarah.
06:56I can't.
06:58Well done. Well done, Sarah.
07:00Remember the breezy footwork's in as well.
07:03Whenever you've got somebody who has got a painful injury,
07:07loading the person onto the stretcher is always a difficult move.
07:11Oh, we're all the pain now.
07:13Where about? In the butt?
07:15In the butt? In the butt's back, yeah.
07:16We're going to have to lift you, Sarah. We've got no choice about this.
07:19I'm going to put up there.
07:21OK, are you ready?
07:22I'm ready.
07:23One, two, three, lift.
07:25Oh, my God.
07:29Sarah, was that your bum again?
07:31Yeah, it's so bad.
07:32OK, keep breathing that pen for us.
07:34Have another go on it for us.
07:35Come on, Sarah.
07:36I'm going to lift legs and we'll just slide them around.
07:39I've got hold of the mat.
07:40I've got hold of the mat under here.
07:41Steady.
07:42Steady.
07:45Get me.
07:46Well done, Sarah.
07:47Well done.
07:48Go on back, Sarah.
07:50Back, Sarah.
07:51Sarah, let's bring your arm down a little bit.
07:54Sarah.
07:54No.
07:55You can bring this down.
07:55There we go.
07:56Good stuff.
07:56It doesn't look very stable in the air today, just so it's doing a bit jiggering.
08:07The helicopters arrived, but the weather conditions are making it difficult for it to land.
08:13It can be a problematic place from a helicopter point of view.
08:19It was windy and the wind was sort of multi-directional, so it was swirling around.
08:25OK.
08:26Right, look at our helicopter's going.
08:27The helicopter must head to a more sheltered landing site and meet the team there.
08:34Ferris Base 737 DS9.
08:37We're going to go for the pressure or cordway.
08:41We'd had to make the decision to carry the patient down to one of our vehicles to hopefully
08:49transport her to somewhere where we could meet the aircraft.
08:52That's what I said.
08:52She's in agony.
08:53That's what I was saying to this.
08:54Every time I get a bump for wind system.
08:58It's a 30-minute stretcher carry.
09:01And the same again in the truck.
09:04That's lightweight stretcher.
09:11I'll just block the entrance a bit.
09:15at last sarah is on her way to hospital in bangor
09:43it's always a degree of relief you have successfully managed the job that you
09:49were tasked to do
09:54uh
10:09straight in right
10:14good then i went for a full ct scan
10:19and then i went for an x-ray of my neck and my shoulder as well
10:28now seraphis is a nervous wait to find out what damage has been done
10:36so we've had i've had a look through the pictures
10:38your spine looks okay
10:45i can't see any fractures and which was our main worry because you're quite sore
10:49sarah has had a very lucky escape
10:53the results of the ct scan was um all good yeah we'll see how you are once um they should definitely
10:59keep the iron man faster on here just for effect and the same with the x-ray thankfully there was
11:07no broken bones which i was really pleased about
11:11it doesn't even look like me i look like a witch
11:14aside from some pretty hefty bruises you've got away from this unscathed yeah
11:22it was a huge relief but there was a whole team of people that came together
11:25to help me that day and they are all fantastic in my in my view all of them
11:40the mountains awaterori is most famous for but in the summer people also fled to the coast
11:48on a summer's day especially on a busy busy day you look around and it's just full of people it's
11:54hundreds if not in the thousands and that puts the emergency teams under pressure you've got a
12:02huge population increase you've basically got a city moving into a village the strain on emergency
12:08services is quite acute
12:16it's mid-summer at berma or barmouth beach it was one of the nicest days that we've had for a long time
12:25it was fantastically warm the sky was nice and clear
12:32technically i'd describe it would be called absolutely rammed
12:36and the coast guard volunteers are gearing up for a busy day
12:43paddling against it so you can watch him now he's starting to paddle
12:46when that tide starts changing starts moving out and if you've got an offshore breeze accompanying that
12:54that makes the beach dangerous
12:56they spot what looks like three children on inflatables being dragged out to sea
13:11martin and the team head to the beach
13:13so they're not obviously in control of the situation are they move forward please thank you
13:22so we straight away drove onto the beach
13:33and as we got there the life that was already on its way back into shore
13:38is everybody okay yeah did you realize how far you were out i told enough yeah were you the one
13:44that was starting to come back good lad but before they can give the boys a lesson on the risks of
13:50using inflatables at sea another urgent call comes in see that tells to walking back already they've
13:58lost a child blonde-haired child if you could possibly get a description and details yeah we've just we've
14:05just been told the missing child yes lucy five last scene at the water blonde a missing child requires
14:11a quick response she was wearing a flowery swimsuit i'm pretty sure it's important to find them as
14:18quick as possible just in case something bad does happen she was last seen going into the water with
14:23her husband and it was just here just over there that's the big fear where were the last
14:28seen by the water and that's always a nightmare scenario the team speak to lucy's mum i just
14:35heard you mention she was with a friend that she's still the friend friend and my husband came running
14:40back and luke went i can't find lucy and i don't know why the friends say lucy is lost somewhere along
14:47the two mile stretch of sand that makes up bermot beach
14:51looking for a missing child on a busy beach is very hard you've just got a sea of people
15:04and description you're given is a child that's three foot tall wearing pink and long hair and you
15:11look around and all you can see is children wearing pink with long hair
15:18with hundreds of people on the beach the team head out into the crowd to search for lucy
15:27stand by it's that sinking feeling isn't it are they in the water so have they drowned
15:33um which is the first thing that's going to cross a parent's mind doesn't it are they say
15:42and for martin the situation brings back a particularly distressing memory
15:49my son was about four or five i look in the pool and my son is disappearing under the water
15:58so i just dived in and come underneath him and scoop him up straight away he's absolutely fine
16:07but it's just that split second there's just the fear in his eyes nothing else i always think about
16:13that when you've got these people on the beach who have lost sight of their kid and you know that
16:22panic that must be in there it's different isn't it to losing them in not a supermarket or something
16:28oh my god losing them here is next level place last seen is important for us to know we've got
16:35coast guard officers walking down the beach from our hut to here and then they'll be searching the
16:42sand dunes and checking those areas there he is oh i learned something else coming here during that
16:48instant we had another one come in a little boy and a girl so we got found kids and lost missing
16:54parents come running up to me and then after that it was like the snowball effect and it was just one
17:01after another after another after another you have to have a missing person if somebody could come back
17:06and let us know please it's busy on the beach 11 missing children or missing adults in literally a
17:14space for an hour or so we've found children for scenario because we've just got to find the parents
17:18and they usually turn up at some point
17:23suddenly news arrives a missing child has been found well you can't see
17:30is she okay it's lucy just a bit scared doesn't need any medical help hello sweetheart you okay
17:47you've been in the water her dad has found her safe and well that's right it's all over
18:00and that relief i'm sorry that relief when they get together i know what that feels like
18:11and by the end of a long afternoon all the missing children have been safely reunited with their families
18:20it's very rewarding to know you're part of a team that does good like that for people
18:27it makes me feel very proud yeah they're very proud we work as a team when everything comes together
18:35there's just absolutely no feeling in the world like it
18:46on sunny days eryri's rivers gorges and waterfalls are another magnet for visitors keen to cool off
18:57so we have got honey pots in the area we're blessed with lots of lakes lots of beautiful rivers
19:08there's pools where people would jump off different rocks you know people go swimming in there
19:14it's definitely got busier in the summer it's on social media a lot it's a beautiful place
19:21for rescue teams jobs here demand a highly specialized skill set how's the speed slow it down slow
19:34oh stop general mountaineering background knowledge of rope work local area knowledge as well
19:42we'll train for doing different rope systems
19:44uh just pull it direct swift water rescue capability as well
19:50we can support for local flooding for paddlers and people canyoning in the gorges
20:04it's a sweltering saturday afternoon when a call comes in
20:07a 24 year old man is injured after jumping into the river he's with his family near tourist hotspot
20:20bettos accord not far from pont and winwood or miners bridge
20:25all gwen valley mountain rescue get the call
20:37i think there's a second job just coming yeah but within minutes two other jobs come in
20:43it's going to take you some wild to get to you i'm afraid so just six volunteers are available to head to
20:49the river rescue yeah two zero eight uh we're up now just coming up over the miners bridge mate we're
20:55just trying to get through the gate over
21:02with this gentleman he'd scrambled upstream along the rocks and then he'd crossed the river and he was
21:10on the other side of the river by a little waterfall on some very slippy steep sided ground
21:19which was not that easy to access oh they're just over there there's no crossing here so the team must
21:27wade through the water scrambling over wet rocks to assess the man's injuries
21:36yeah so attention as we get this tragedy package self-abinder pain relief
21:41he fell off there lads yeah hit something under the water and then he's moved to here
21:45okay so right in to go
21:51and breathe out he had been wet and he was cold okay so you can do like five of those to start off
21:59with the case to do with those one after the other he was in shock and he was in a lot of pain
22:04they had an injury to top of the leg we thought there might be pelvis injuries spine consideration as
22:11well okay now you've got that now so if you start feeling any pain just take take a go on it okay so
22:18pelvic injuries can be dangerous because of the underlying structures the blood vessels and the nerves
22:24the force it takes to break a pelvis for a young man of that age is significant you know we wanted to get
22:32them out of there as soon as we could but there's no easy way to get the injured man out
22:41in fact what we're going to go up which is a no-no as far as i'm concerned
22:46so the other options were to do a winch from the helicopter so they were called in
22:52can we redirect 936 to him
23:01the coastguard helicopter can be with them in 10 minutes
23:07one two three lift your bum up helicopter coming
23:13can we have someone go back and get the heli strut
23:16one two three lift your bum up
23:18meanwhile the team need to fit the injured man with a pelvic binder to stabilize his injury
23:25roll under as far as we can
23:27and get him onto a stretcher
23:31long deep nice
23:34i'm just gonna hold skin under here okay
23:38i got him there i'm just gonna put my arm here just to stop you sliding okay
23:46it's quite an inaccessible place in terms of rescue it can be tricky to winch into and
24:07if you snag a hoist cable around a tree then the winch operator's only option is to cut that cable
24:14you might have to say i'm sorry but we don't think we should try this
24:23uh we totally understand totally agree with that uh thanks for trying it was a it was a chance
24:28but uh that's totally justifiable uh thanks for attending and i'm sure odd and base will have other
24:33stuff for you though right that's it helicopter's not clean with the helicopter unable to help the
24:40team will have to get the injured man out by themselves
24:46we couldn't use the helicopters then we went to plan c
24:50stretcher
24:51two zero six one is two
24:53stretcher stretcher
24:55which means the six of them carrying the casualty in a stretcher across the fast flowing river
25:01normally on stretch carry we'd be looking having eight people we had that many call outs that day that
25:10you manage with what you've got we knew it was going to be a difficult extraction and there were
25:18definitely risks they rig a rope system across the water put them on the highland so if we put the
25:24helicopter straps on on the pulley we can just pull them across and starts to bring the stretcher across
25:32okay we've got hands on it david you can lift yeah i've got it now and lifting at head end
25:38sometimes we have to make decisions which are not the gold standard but as long as they are
25:44appropriately risk assessed and they're the right thing for the casualty then sometimes we will have
25:50to make those decisions on the ground okay well there's a knuckle work yeah what i suggest is rotate
25:58the feet to luca yep your feet yeah luckily on that day four of us were swift water rescue trains
26:08hold while we're on the rock then you move forward to hold
26:12four of us were also advanced rope trained so we had a lot of knowledge within a very small team
26:17you got empty go go go go go go quick
26:24yeah hold down hold that okay i've got this side jed
26:29you're on that side everybody yeah okay wait wait wait wait
26:35yeah i'm hands on got it toes up so we stay dry wait
26:40we need slack oh slack please dave
26:53we were lucky that the river wasn't higher one foot higher the techniques we used would not have been
26:59appropriate and we would have had to wait for ogwin or another team to assist us
27:06go to the ground go down on three one two three finally they make it back onto dry land ready brace lift
27:18okay it's gonna be tight on the right
27:23yeah stop stop stop and hand the casualty over to the waiting ambulance crew who'll take him on to hospital
27:36once you handed over the casualty there's always a feeling of relief that you've done everything
27:41that you can for them every call out is different you never know what you're going to go to we train
27:48a lot for them we have a saying that it's train hard fight easy x-rays later reveal he's badly fractured
27:57his femur we were good solid group of team members making right decisions at the right time it's a nice
28:06nice feeling
28:16so
28:18so
28:26so
28:28so
28:30so
28:32Amen.
