Olympian Ed Clancy cycles with local people in Sheffield Grand Prix

The three time gold medallist took apart in a community ride with people from the community ahead of the professional races, which attract some of the nation's top talent.

00:05Away you go, it's Jordan and I am from you to go up out of the way

00:09here in Sheffield Falls, 20 to 25

00:14This is all about getting everywhere in the circuit

00:17and enjoying the competitions we're here today

00:21running out in the National Circuit Series

00:24It's a great value to the music, there's a crowd on the side

00:28lots of different versions of different energy versions

00:32just make sure you meet the wind speculator

00:34so it's perfectly special and if you all come on

00:37for the days like this are quite special for me

00:39I feel like I've got sort of two worlds in my life combined

00:42so I'm active travel commissioner for Mayor Oliver

00:45which is the opposite of just down the road

00:47and I'm still having bridge cycling right now

00:50I'm working hard on this foundation project for bridge cycling

00:54which I hope in the coming months and years

00:56we're going to do and fund amazing things

00:59so yeah, this event here, I love it

01:02and for people who don't know this is a circuit series

01:05it's one and half a dozen town centre races

01:08the proper races will be fast and furious and exciting

01:11and the spectators get to see the riders every minute or two

01:14so yeah, I'm sure we're in for a great evening

01:17and I know you're from Barnsley

01:19but to see cycle racing being celebrated so much in South Yorkshire

01:23in your home area, that must feel quite good

01:26I've got to say I saw a few of the community satisfaction reports

01:31following the Tour of Britain last year

01:35and it was incredibly well received

01:37and I sincerely hope it's the same for this event

01:40I think it just brings so much to communities in terms of private place

01:44there were tens of thousands of people out here last year

01:47watching the racing

01:49and yeah, there's a lot of inspiration that comes with that

01:52but on the other hand, you know, if we inspire people

01:55that given capability and opportunity to land upon that

01:58you can sort of go wanting a little bit

02:00which is, yeah, why I'm so driven and so proud to be involved

02:05in the active travel work and the foundation work we're excited to

02:08and on that, the active travel stuff

02:11I've seen a lot of people lining up for this first community race

02:13some young people

02:14it must be quite good to see that it's sort of inspired more people to take part, I guess

02:18yeah, so before the proper racing starts

02:21we have a rock-up-and-ride so anyone can turn up on commuter bikes, cargo bikes, mountain bikes

02:26just in a normal kit

02:28and yeah, there's a lot of energy out there

02:32for cycling outside of sport, you know

02:37for leisure cycling, for cycling as a utility and commuting tool

02:41you know, it's, yeah, yeah

02:44nobody believes in cycling more than me

02:46you know, we've got the most efficient machine in the planet here

02:49for sort of doing your daily commute

02:51we are the outdoor city here in Sheffield

02:53we've got some of the most beautiful parts of the world

02:56right on our doorstep here in the outdoor city

02:59and yeah, I really believe cycling bikes hold the keys for lots of good stuff

03:04so it's great to see the community right here
