"Pulasa" — the prized monsoon-season fish — is a culinary treasure of the twin Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh. Every year from July to October, these rare Hilsa fish migrate from distant places like Australia, New Zealand, and Tanzania, crossing oceans to spawn in the Godavari River. Battling against the river's monsoon flow, their journey makes them uniquely flavorful and extremely rare.
Locals consider Pulasa fish a seasonal luxury — families proudly announce when one is cooked at home. Found only in the Godavari River, it's different from the same species in the sea (called "Vilasa") or the Hooghly River ("Hilsa"). Pulasa is not only difficult to catch but also spoils quickly once netted — a reason for its rarity and value.
Due to pollution in ocean waters and harmful fishing practices, the availability of Pulasa has been steadily declining. Fisheries departments are raising awareness among fishermen to protect breeding fish and ensure the species survives for future generations.
పుస్తెలమ్మైనా పులస కొని తినాల్సిందే అన్నది ఉభయ గోదావరి జిల్లాలో నానుడి. గోదావరికి వర్షాకాలం బురదనీరు వచ్చిందంటే పులసల చేపల సీజన్ ప్రారంభమైనట్లే. ఈ సీజన్ జులై నుంచి అక్టోబరు వరకు ఉంటుంది.సంతానోత్పత్తి కోసం ఆస్ట్రేలియా, న్యూజిలాండ్, టాంజానియా వంటి సుదూర ప్రాంతాల నుంచి ఖండాలను దాటి హిందూ మహాసముద్రం మీదుగా ప్రయాణించి బంగాళాఖాతంలో ప్రవేశిస్తాయి. ఈ సమయంలో సముద్రం నుంచి గోదావరి నదిలోకి పులస చేపలు ఎదురీదుతూ వచ్చి ఇక్కడ పిల్లలు పెట్టి వాటితో తిరిగి వెళ్లే క్రమంలో జాలర్లకు చిక్కి పులస ప్రియులకు కిక్కిస్తాయి.నదీ ప్రవాహానికి అతివేగంగా ఎదురీదడం ఈ పులస చేప యెక్క ప్రత్యేకత.
