00:01A desert full of unblinking killers, Mongolia, 80 million years ago.
00:09When you're not very big, big brains help.
00:14At 100 pounds, Whitetip, a Velociraptor is, pound for pound, one of the most terrifying predators.
00:21In a group, they're awesome, but Whitetip is now alone.
00:31Without a pack, Whitetip will starve. Without a mate, she has no future.
00:40Can she make it using only her wits and cunning?
00:45Or will she need more brawn in a world full of angry predators?
00:52How will she survive?
00:59Whitetip's journey.
01:22The desert of Mongolia is vast and desolate, hot and unforgiving.
01:31Here, even the toughest dinosaurs struggle to eke out a living.
01:38Whitetip, a female Velociraptor, is on a desperate journey.
01:42Four days ago, her pack was killed by another pack of Velociraptors.
02:02Now, she's alone.
02:04Whitetip's not a solitary hunter, but she needs to eat, soon, or face starvation.
02:15Far from home, she stumbles on an oasis that could save her life.
02:19A pranocephaly. She's seen them before. She knows what they taste like.
02:32She's a man.
02:33She's a man.
02:34She's a man.
02:35She's a man.
02:36But the last person is an old man.
02:38They're a man.
02:39She's a man.
02:40She's a man.
02:42This is the time for a week.
02:43these youngsters are jousting for fun their nine-inch thick skulls are like
03:00battering rams and their spines are built to withstand the jolt
03:13it's just play now one day these males will fight for dominance in their herd if they
03:42live long enough predators are never very far away white tip is impatient normally
03:58she'd stalk them till the time was right if she wasn't alone this would be fast food but
04:09her hunger drives her to a dangerous decision white tips not in top form and with no pack to
04:26back her up the brunt of those skulls could easily break her back like many plant eaters
04:50cranocephaly often separate while feeding and that's an opportunity for white tip
04:56oh
04:58oh
05:02oh
05:06To be continued...
05:36In a pack, Velociraptors are among the smartest killers on the planet.
05:46But hunting alone takes a lot of luck.
05:59A day later, and still no food.
06:02Now White Tip will settle for anything she can get.
06:06Driven to desperation, she lowers her sights.
06:14An out of the woods.
06:44A familiar screech, it could be a better meal.
07:08Intruding on a flock of ovaraptors is crazy.
07:10They're fierce rivals, twice the size of Whitetip.
07:17Instead of teeth, these meat-eaters have wicked beaks and equally formidable claws.
07:25The noise that Lord Whitetip hear sounded like a killing.
07:32But there's no food here, just sex.
07:42This older male's doing his best to court a female.
07:45He's got smooth moves, and a good line.
07:58But it's not working.
08:05I gotta give him credit for trying.
08:17A younger suitor makes a play.
08:24A younger suitor makes a play.
08:31There is aific.
08:41Good risk!
08:50Good risk!
08:54A sore loser, the young oviraptor takes it out on whitetip.
09:24The Mongolian desert is crawling with predators.
09:37Whitetip may be a meat-eater, but she still needs to watch her step, or she could end up someone else's dinner.
09:44Another lousy lizard.
09:56Oh well.
10:00Beggars can't be choosers.
10:04But this lizard's not gonna stick around for dinner.
10:14. . . . .
10:27. . .
10:40Uh-oh, Protoceratops.
10:58Whitetips blundered into a nest of trouble.
11:02Protoceratops are usually mild-mannered, but not when they're parents.
11:06And not when they're mad.
11:10This old male has only one eye, but he's relentless when it comes to protecting his family.
11:35He pursues her well beyond his own territory.
11:40And right into another male's domain.
11:43No!
12:13Protoceratops are about the size of sheep, and just as docile, but the intruders enraged
12:20this herd's leader. He'll protect his harem with his life. The old male is a combat veteran,
12:31but he'd just as soon be elsewhere.
12:43The old male is a combat veteran, and the older male is a combat veteran, and the older male
12:49Oh, yeah.
13:19Oh
13:49Dazed and disoriented, the wounded male staggers in the wrong direction from home.
14:19He's exhausted and bleeding, and has no chance to escape.
14:49All Whitetip has to do is wait.
15:02Whitetip has caught a break.
15:04She's not out of danger.
15:09Without a pack, her days could still be numbered.
15:12In Jurassic Park, the fleet-footed Velociraptor raced out of nowhere to become one of the world's most famous dinosaurs.
15:20However, Velociraptor was actually less than one half my size.
15:26Scientists used to think dinosaurs resembled lizards, but now we see them as more akin to birds.
15:32In 1999, paleontologists digging in China discovered a new species of dinosaur with a revolutionary feature.
15:39It has a layer of primitive feathers up to an inch and a half long.
15:44Thriving about 135 million years ago, Cynornithosaurus is one of the earliest known bird-like dinosaurs.
15:51Yet it couldn't fly.
15:53So why was it feathered?
15:55Possibly, to help control body temperature.
15:58Or perhaps, to attract members of the opposite sex.
16:01Fifty-five million years later, along came another flightless carnivore.
16:06Velociraptor.
16:10Besides feathers, Velociraptor and Cynornithosaurus share more than a hundred specialized features with birds.
16:17Including the hollow bones that help make birds airborne.
16:21Based on this mountain of evidence, both of these predatory dinosaurs support the idea that birds are the direct descendants of two-legged, meat-eating creatures.
16:30We still don't know exactly why feathers evolved, but we do know, if it looks like a bird, and acts like a bird, it must be a dinosaur.
16:52For most of the creatures in the Gobi Desert, just staying alive is a challenge.
16:56The daily routine never varies.
16:59For the lone Velociraptor, White Tip, a change is in the wind.
17:26A pack of Velociraptors is on the hunt.
17:29When they're hungry, they'll attack anything.
17:33Almost.
17:38Their leader is Broken Hand.
17:40He's strong and aggressive, despite his injured limb.
17:43The noise piques his interest.
17:46A pair of Oviraptors is gorging themselves on Protoceratops eggs.
18:05This is no time for a showdown.
18:21It's time for a showdown.
18:22It's time for a showdown.
18:28A trail of blood looks promising.
18:51The blood belongs to White Tip's fresh kill.
19:16She's feasting on the carcass.
19:28Velociraptors, like these, wiped out her pack.
19:32She has reason to fear them.
19:36She has reason to fear them.
20:14Okay, you have a chance to go.
20:15White Tip has no choice but to go.
20:20There is no choice but to go.
20:27Whitetip has no choice but to go, or maybe not.
20:43Going it alone is a drag, and this is a strong pack, but you'll have to play it cool, very
20:51cool.
20:55Whitetip will bide her time until the pack has eaten its fill.
21:24A full stomach should make these velociraptors less dangerous, but timing is everything.
21:31A mistake could cost Whitetip her life.
21:43Bluebrow's interested, but he's not the boss, and he didn't get permission from Brokenhand.
21:50His leadership threatened, Brokenhand unloads.
21:57But it's not Whitetip he's mad at.
22:04It's Bluebrow.
22:11It's Bluebrow.
22:19But it's not Whitetip he's mad at.
22:22It's Bluebrow.
22:26Bluebrow.
22:29It's Bluebrow.
22:33Bluebrow.
22:35Bluebrow.
22:36Bluebrow.
22:41Shhh!
22:43Ah!
22:45Shhh!
22:47Woah!
22:49Shhh!
22:51Shhh!
22:53Ah!
22:55Shhh!
22:57Shhh!
22:59Blue Brow is down, but he's not out.
23:16Broken hands miscalculated.
23:19This kid's tough.
23:29The downfall of Broken Hand is a stunning victory for Blue Brow.
23:42The balance of power in the pack has shifted.
23:59With Broken Hand gone, it's a whole new ballgame, and a new start for White Tip.
24:24White Tip's been accepted.
24:25To secure her place in the pecking order, she still must earn her stripes.
24:44When hunting, a pack of Velociraptors can cover a lot of ground.
24:55These Protoceratops look familiar.
25:01White Tip is back, and this time, she's not alone.
25:05For the first time, White Tip is hunting with her new pack.
25:26Velociraptors rarely attack head-on.
25:29They're experts at deception.
25:31Equipped with relatively large brains, they're among the most cunning and dangerous dinosaurs around.
25:41This pair is deliberately distracting the herd of Protoceratops,
25:44while Blue Brow and White Tip circle around.
25:48The ruse works.
25:54The nests are unprotected.
25:55The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:01Just time to pull off a heist.
26:03The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:05The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:06The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:07The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:08The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:09The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:11The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:13The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:15The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:17The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:18The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:19The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:20The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:21The intruders aren't looking for a kill.
26:22Oh, my God.
26:52Now to divide the loot.
26:54Blue Brow keeps his, White Tip is forced to relinquish hers.
27:19She's still at the bottom of the pecking order.
27:22White Tip has played her hand just right.
27:27She's proven her worth and assured her place in the pack.
27:32Three months later, back in shape and confident, White Tip is about to become a mother.
27:50She's found a nesting site she likes.
27:52Somebody else's.
27:55Somebody else's.
27:56Somebody else's.
27:57Somebody else's.
27:58I don't know.
27:59I don't know.
28:00White Tip is about to become a mother.
28:01She's found a nesting site she likes.
28:03Somebody else's.
28:05I don't know.
28:06Oh man.
28:07I don't know.
28:08What?
28:09Yes, he is so much.
28:10Come on.
28:11There it is.
28:32Secure enough to assert herself, Whitetip no longer feels the urge to be submissive.
28:50The ousted female hopes Bluebrow will intercede, but his position is clear.
28:55On Dinosaur Planet, Predator and Prey live side by side, as intimate enemies.
29:23It's a landscape interrupted only now and then by uproar.
29:27And when stomachs are full again, the calm is restored.
29:43Whitetip has laid her first clutch of eggs.
29:47It's small, only five, but it's an investment in the future.
29:53Whitetip has no time to go hunting.
29:57Bluebrow is still new at being a leader, and his instincts for hunting have yet to be tested,
30:11as the pack is about to discover.
30:13A Shuvia is pecking the bark of a dead tree in search of grubs.
30:31A Shuvia is pecking the bark of a dead tree in search of grubs.
30:53Bluebrow makes a tactical error.
30:55He hesitates and loses the element of surprise.
30:59Bluebrow makes a However....
31:01...less a stable erasure and Materials shine behind the roof.
31:03Bluebrow makes a difficult look for them to tamamen.
31:05Greenbrow backs of grubs.
31:11Bluebrow years ofimerkies are failing to find them a new body.
31:15Greenbrows up to a Senator Rudy.
31:19Bluebrow.
31:21Bluebrows.
31:23Bluebrows.
31:25Bluebrows.
31:27Bluebrows.
31:28An over-raptor's bone-crunching beat ends Bluebrow's hunt and the pack's chance for a meal.
31:43Humbled, Bluebrow is the first to leave. Not a good showing.
32:00Mongolia, 80 million years ago. For predators, it was a very good year.
32:06You had Velociraptors, three kinds of over-raptors, and little Shavuya, just to name a few species.
32:16But the numbers just don't add up. The species of predators outnumber the species of prey.
32:23In a typical ecosystem, there are more prey than predators.
32:27But in prehistoric Mongolia, the ecosystem was a predator's paradise.
32:32Undoubtedly, the most bizarre were the over-raptors.
32:36It's hard to tell the front of the skull from the back, especially since they had no teeth.
32:41Instead, there's a strong bird-like beak.
32:44Yet over-raptors had the trademark claws of a carnivore.
32:48So what did they eat?
32:50When the first over-raptor was discovered in 1923, it was lying on a clutch of eggs thought to belong to Protoceratops.
32:58Scientists dubbed the new species over-raptor, or egg thief.
33:02But the eggs, recently, were found to be over-raptor eggs.
33:07The alleged thief was actually a nurturing parent.
33:11Perhaps over-raptor hunted a smorgasbord of small animals.
33:15Or maybe, as its ancestors lost their teeth, it became a switch-hitter, an omnivore, consuming both plants and meat, and perhaps eggs too.
33:25When it comes to dinosaur behavior, we usually have to rely on our best guess.
33:32And those ideas will change as we make new discoveries.
33:36Deserts are unforgiving.
33:53Life clings to the slimmest of margins.
33:57When it comes to survival, it's catch as catch can.
34:02And anything is fair game.
34:07As dusk settles, Whitetip is in her nest, tending her eggs.
34:11She hasn't eaten for days.
34:23A small delta theridium gets her attention.
34:30Its movement is irresistible.
34:34It triggers the instinct to hunt, leaving her eggs vulnerable.
34:45Big mistake.
34:55The intruder is Broken Hand, just trying to stay alive.
34:59Whitetip's clutch is reduced to three eggs.
35:11The loss is a setback.
35:14But, at least it's not a disaster for the mom-to-be.
35:31What is the danger to be?
35:35Haah!
35:39Haah!
35:40Haah!
35:41Haah!
35:42Weeks ago, White Tip laid a foundation for the future.
36:10Last night, the eggs hatched, now both she and her infants need to be fed.
36:36Less than a day old, these young Velociraptors are left to fend for themselves.
36:41She must hunt.
36:43Once again, the pack is at full strength and hungry for big game.
37:05These bones of the old Protoceratops are all that's left of the meal that saved White Tip's
37:14life.
37:18But others may not be so lucky.
37:29Desperate with hunger, Broken Hand has recklessly attacked the herd of Prinocephaly.
37:46There is no pack to reinforce it, the old soldiers defenseless.
38:01Without a backwards glance, the pack moves off, leaving Broken Hand to his fate.
38:22The Oviraptor nesting ground.
38:50Guarded by just two females.
38:58Now it's turnabout fair play.
39:03That surprise attack leaves a pair of hatchlings on open ground, totally unprotected.
39:18As quickly as the pack appeared, they vanish.
39:27The point is to get a meal, not become one.
39:33The meal White Tip brings home looks just like her offspring.
39:48But here in the Gobi Desert, her own hatchlings could just as easily have been an Oviraptor's
39:53dinner.
39:58Something's in the wind.
40:12In prehistoric Mongolia, dark clouds are a rare sight, and weather a phenomenon.
40:23Here it rains only inches a year, just enough to sustain life.
40:38But this is no spring shower.
40:41It's a gully washer.
40:44White Tip has never seen the likes of this.
40:46Or a tragedy to follow.
40:58For the first time in a century, the rain is unrelenting.
41:05All the dinosaurs can do is hunker down and wait.
41:31When the storm finally breaks, life goes back to normal.
41:41Only this time, it's a little more urgent.
41:44A little more hungry.
41:46A little more raw.
41:49The pack is ravenous.
41:52And dead set on a serious meal.
41:56They're not above scavenging, but the carcass of their old leader, Broken Hand,
42:00is too putrid to eat.
42:07Their best bet is Protoceratops.
42:09The plan is an old one, with a new twist.
42:19The pack splits up, setting the play in motion.
42:29These two females distract the herd, while Blue-Brown and White-Tip prepare to charge.
42:44Bye, go!
42:45I've got this guy!
42:46I'm afraid this guy has a new one.
42:47I've got this guy.
42:48No!
42:49I'm afraid it'll be able to change his new disguise.
42:51Apparently Blue-Brown would take the lead.
42:52Alright?
42:53I'll stop here.
42:54A little bit.
42:55Let White-Tip attack first.
43:00But Whitetip attacks first.
43:17Bluebrow hesitates.
43:20He's faced this bull before.
43:27When he finally engages, Whitetip goes down.
43:35But her fall may be a lucky break.
43:54By a freak of nature, the fighting dinosaurs are doomed.
43:59Saturated with water from the storm, the dune begins to slip.
44:04Whitetip can't grasp what's happened.
44:14Whitetip can't grasp what's happened.
44:27An avalanche of sand has buried her pack alive.
44:34Yet, her instincts tell her to move on.
44:50Once again, Whitetip's on her own.
45:08Once again, Whitetip's on her own.
45:11But, she's not alone.
45:15Whitetip's brood is more than a family.
45:34One day soon, these chicks will reach adulthood.
45:47With their mother to guide them, they'll form a new pack, and become some of the most formidable predators ever to roam dinosaur planet.
45:57In the history of fossil hunting, this mortal embrace of a velociraptor and protoceratops ranks as one of the greatest discoveries of all time.
46:21Paleontologists have never found anything else like it, a kind of dinosaur Pompeii.
46:28Life stopped dead in its tracks.
46:30The velociraptor thrusts its killing claw into the gut of the protoceratops, while the jaws of the protoceratops grip the predator's arm.
46:39Before this landmark find, the evidence that the velociraptor hunted protoceratops was only circumstantial.
46:46The tooth marks of the carnivore on the bones of its prey.
46:50Fighting dinosaurs provide the hard evidence.
46:53Yet, as one mystery is solved, another looms.
46:57What freak of nature preserved this rare fossil snapshot?
47:01Before they become fossils, most bones are exposed to erosion by wind and water, perhaps gnawing by scavengers.
47:10The fighting dinosaurs show no such wear, suggesting they were suddenly entombed.
47:16But how?
47:17The fossil record suggests the Cretaceous dunes of the Gobi Desert were stabilized by plants, which grew above a layer of calcium.
47:26But nothing built on sand lasts forever.
47:29Every few centuries, torrential storms may have struck the Gobi.
47:33Rain percolated through the sand until trapped at the calcium layer.
47:37Then, like a California mudslide, the entire top layer gave way.
47:42In an instant, predator and prey were buried beneath tons of sand.
47:46A fossil freeze frame captured in time.
47:56For this reason, more than one is the most ownership of the DraperM یہ.
