A musician has launched a project with a group of artists to upcycle tires into art and furniture, and raise environmental awareness. Tires that are discarded can leach toxic chemicals.

00:00a majestic lion a graceful giraffe and a flock of birds you could say these
00:14animal sculptures have reinvented the wheel because they are made from old
00:18tires that have been thrown away in the streets of N'Djamena where sometimes
00:23the rubber piles make it hard to navigate around a lack of facilities to
00:28recycle tires means they're a common sight but the part of the abandoned tires
00:33gets upcycled here in this cultural center in Bacala close to N'Djamena it
00:39hosts a workshop for aspiring artists where old tires get cut up into black
00:44strips which are then used for sculptures Jimadum Tresor is one of the many
00:53creative spirits who work here I'm not trained in this but it's happened when
01:01I see an image or a photo of an animal I can visualize it and immerse myself in
01:08it this all happens under the guidance of singer and sculptor Mondoe we realize
01:29there are so many tires and if it can contribute even a little to the
01:33environment it's not bad the stuff that's cluttering up our streets ends
01:39up in our living rooms and classrooms as decorative objects that's pretty good
01:43the craftsmen and women create stunning upcycled sculptures and furniture that
01:51they hope conveys a message and Mondoe is proud of what they're achieving
01:56I say I'm first an example for myself and then for young people who want to do the same
