00:00Pardon the interruption, but I'm Mike Wilbon.
00:02Baseball's All-Star Game is tonight, Tony.
00:05Have you ever made any All-Star teams?
00:09I'm Tony Kornheiser.
00:11Street and Smith's 10 Sexiest Sports Writers, 1978.
00:15I got a copy of it behind me on the bookcase.
00:17Wow.
00:17Yeah.
00:18You beat out Bob Ryan?
00:19Is that the case, huh?
00:21I think I beat out Ryan.
00:23Pretty sure I beat out Lupica.
00:25Pretty sure.
00:26I'm not getting into that one.
00:28You can look it up.
00:28I'm not going anywhere.
00:29Welcome to PTI, boys and girls.
00:32In today's episode, Nick Saban's football future.
00:35Criticism of Jalen Hurts and Marta Rosa joins us to talk baseball for five good minutes.
00:40But we begin today with big dumper Cal Raleigh winning the Home Run Derby last night,
00:45becoming the first catcher to ever do so.
00:47Raleigh is now the fourth player to win the Home Run Derby while leading the majors in home runs to that point,
00:53joining Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGuire, who did it in the 90s,
00:56and Aaron Judge, who did it in 2017.
00:59Wilbon, how high in the star rankings can you see Raleigh ascending?
01:04Well, Tony, if you're going to ascend high in star rankings, it means to me more than one season.
01:10Look, he's the odds-on favorite to be the MVP.
01:13And I know Aaron Judge is like, let's not count out Aaron Judge with the season he's having.
01:19But it means you got, even as a catcher, and we're paying special attention because, my goodness,
01:25this guy's having a hell of a year for anybody and double for a catcher.
01:29But Mike Piazza's a guy who had five, six, or more great seasons.
01:35I'm not even about to start mentioning the likes of Johnny Bench.
01:38If we go back in time, Barra and Campanella, I'm just not prepared to do that.
01:43But in today's star-making turn, where the marketing people will make a star out of anybody who's had three great weeks,
01:51the dumper is already a star by today's standards.
01:55But if he's going to be the MVP and then can sustain this, you know, and, like, I don't care.
02:02As I said two days in a row, I don't care about, you know, a home run derby.
02:06I, you know, Tony, I just want all the all-star games to get off the stage so that we can resume with the parts of the season that matter.
02:14And now we are in the second half of the season in both leagues.
02:18There's some intriguing races going on.
02:21You've got Raleigh having this terrific season.
02:23But star, to me, means more than one season.
02:26To me, old-fashioned as I am.
02:28Yeah.
02:29Yeah.
02:30So I would just start by saying what a warm moment it must have been last night when Cal Raleigh is up there swinging
02:37and his dad is throwing the pitches and his younger brother is catching behind him.
02:42I remember when Bryce Harper's dad was throwing the pitches to Bryce Harper when he was on the Nationals
02:47and he won the home run derby.
02:49And what a fortunate thing for Raleigh yesterday that the longest home run he hit in the first contest
02:55was one, that got him into the second contest, was one inch longer than the Oakland player, right?
03:02Let me get Oakland's player's name, Brent Rooker.
03:05One inch longer.
03:06Okay.
03:07How high can he go?
03:09Catcher is a problem.
03:10It's not a glamour position.
03:12Though two guys you mentioned, Johnny Bench and Mike Piazza, were fairly glamorous.
03:16He's the best defensive catcher in all of baseball.
03:20And I think that that matters.
03:23He's got a great nickname.
03:25Big Dumper is a great nickname.
03:27He's a switch hitter.
03:28Legendary players have been switch hitters.
03:31And Mike, by August 1st, it's very possible he will have, certainly not August 1st, September 1st,
03:36he'll have more home runs than any catcher ever had.
03:38What is the negative here?
03:40One of the negatives is he plays in Seattle, which is off the grid, though that never hurt Ken Griffey Jr.
03:44The big negative to me is that he's in the era of Otani and Judge, who are tremendously glamorous players in large cities who look like all-timers.
03:55So what would happen with Raleigh, even if he has a great year, is somebody's going to say, do it again.
04:00Do it again.
04:01Prove it's not a fluke.
04:02Because these other guys have done it again.
04:04And these other guys have been in the World Series and that matters.
04:07Yeah, Judge and Otani have done it again.
04:08That's just it.
04:08You've got to do it more than once.
04:10And we'll see if he's capable.
04:12That's worth watching.
04:13I don't care about home run derby.
04:15Dumper, can he sustain this?
04:18That's what's worth watching to me.
04:20Let's move to speculation about, brace yourselves, Nick Saban returning to coaching.
04:27ESPN analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McIlroy said on his radio show yesterday that someone very much in the know was pretty adamant that Saban will return to coaching one day.
04:40Ole Miss coach and former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin later said, quote, I don't think he's done.
04:47Close quote.
04:49Tone, could you see Nick Saban returning to coaching?
04:54Yeah, so as a former sports writer, I would love to know who Greg McIlroy's source is.
05:01Could it be Saban himself since Saban coached him at Alabama?
05:05Maybe it's somebody who coached with Saban.
05:06Could it be Sarkeesian?
05:08Could it be Bill Belichick?
05:10You know, can I see Saban returning coaching?
05:13Of course I can.
05:14Bill Belichick is coaching again.
05:16Pete Carroll is coaching again.
05:17You're going to say, hold it, hold it, hold it.
05:18Nobody wants to coach with the NIL and the transfer portal and Saban got out because he couldn't control his team the way he used to be able to control his team.
05:28Well, things evolved, Mike.
05:30I mean, again, look, look who's coaching.
05:33Look what Belichick did.
05:34He hired a GM so that he could be shielded from all the transactional stuff.
05:41I mean, it seems to me this is going to settle down.
05:44It seems to me it's going to be streamlined, the transfer portal and the NIL and all that money.
05:50And it seems to me possible that Saban would say, yeah, I've been out two years.
05:54I'll take another shot at this.
05:56And I would list a bunch of names, Mike, in another sport.
05:59Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Roy Williams, Tony Bennett, Jay Wright.
06:03Is it possible that maybe a couple of them look at it now and say, maybe I was a little too hasty?
06:08Because I think it'll settle down and you can go back to coaching.
06:12It's not settled down at all.
06:14It's going to be wilder because people are going to offer money outside of whatever the salary cap is.
06:21You think the Texas A&M, just to pick a place, you think their oil rich alums are going to say, yeah, we're going to pay attention to the cap?
06:31No, they're not.
06:32And Saban's not coming back.
06:34And I'm going to go build cower on you because there are some people who just enjoy their lives.
06:39And Saban seems to be one of them.
06:40He plays the best golf courses in the world every time he wakes up and wants to do it.
06:45I'll tell you something, Saban would be great.
06:47They'd be great at a lot of stuff.
06:49How about the czar of college football?
06:51Because college football is going to need one.
06:53All the college sports needs one.
06:54No, he's not coming back because Saban very quickly identified what the problem was going to be, the issues going to be in college sports.
07:03And he got out the next day.
07:05He was smarter and quicker than everybody.
07:08And he ain't coming back.
07:10I'm going to go the other way.
07:11I'm going to go the other way.
07:12And I'm just going to make it very, very simple here.
07:14And he's done great work.
07:15He's brilliant in that Verbo commercial.
07:17He is.
07:18But he's been out two years.
07:19And this is the life he's always had.
07:21And maybe he misses it.
07:23Maybe he misses it.
07:24Let's move to the NFL, where Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told NBC Sports in Philadelphia that he totally rejects the notion that last year's Super Bowl winning Eagles carried quarterback Jalen Hurts.
07:37And that Hurts was just along for the ride.
07:39A notion that apparently has found traction in Philadelphia.
07:43Sirianni said, quote, I think that's bull bleep.
07:46We're talking about the ultimate team game there is.
07:48And he does whatever he needs to do to win every game, unquote.
07:52Wilbon, was this something that ever entered your mind?
07:55No, because it's too stupid to enter my mind.
07:58And this is what happens when a 17-game season has to be discussed on every network, including this one, for 52 weeks.
08:08That means there's 30-plus weeks when it shouldn't be discussed, when there ought to be a moratorium, when people ought to say, let's discuss something else like golf and tennis and track and field.
08:19But no, we're going to just discuss this ad nauseum and propose questions and debates that are stupid and not worth considering.
08:30And then we're going to do it tomorrow morning and the next morning and the next morning.
08:34And that's all it is, is fodder for stupid talk.
08:39So I think that, you know, in this particular case, it may have something to do with these rankings of quarterbacks that come out.
08:47And you see that Hurts is ranked like 9th or 10th or 11th or something like that.
08:51I'm one of those people who believe that there are better quarterbacks than Jalen Hurts.
08:57But I would be inclined to put Jalen Hurts, as you know, as the MVP ahead of a lot of those guys.
09:03Joe Burrow, I think, is a better quarterback.
09:05Lamar Jackson, I think, is a better quarterback.
09:07Their results are nowhere near Jalen Hurts' results.
09:10Jalen Hurts' results are right in front of you.
09:13I mean, is there linkage to the fact that Saquon Barkley came to the Eagles and the Eagles won a Super Bowl?
09:20Sure, that's possibly true.
09:21But Jalen Hurts is out there on every play to make sure Saquon Barkley gets the ball where he needs the ball
09:27and make sure that that offense is maximized.
09:30I'll give you a quarterback, Mike, a comparable quarterback who did not have overwhelming statistics,
09:34who had wonderful receivers and had great running backs and won Super Bowls.
09:39Bart Starr.
09:39And I don't think the Packers could have won without Bart Starr.
09:43You know, I think that team was Bart Starr's in the way that the Eagles team is Jalen Hurts'.
09:49And like you, I don't know where this comes from.
09:52I just don't.
09:54I don't.
09:54It comes from a place of stupid.
09:56Because history is littered with guys who did what they were supposed to do.
10:01Do your job.
10:03Is it Parcells or Belichick?
10:05I forget which Bill said it.
10:06Do your job.
10:07Belichick.
10:08Bob Greasy would never be mentioned with the all-time great pass.
10:12What'd he do?
10:13He did what he was supposed to do and did his job and quarterbacked a great team.
10:18And there are people like that.
10:19You mentioned Bart Starr.
10:20Of course those guys are.
10:22And Jalen Hurts is every bit of that.
10:25And so when I see these rankings, Tony, the rankings have to come out so you can have these stupid discussions.
10:32I will tell you, Mike.
10:3352 weeks a year.
10:35This feels like a creation.
10:38And I would give all the credit in the world to Nick Sirianni if he created it just to slam it.
10:43Let's take a break.
10:43Coming up, Tarek Skubel and Paul Schemes are your all-star starters.
10:48What can baseball do to restore the stature of the starting pitcher?
10:50We're going to ask Mark DeRosa.
10:53We'll also ask him about Pete Alonso's suggestion to make one-on-one fights legal in baseball.
10:58We should ask him about another Pete.
11:00M.D. Pete.
11:01Pete.
11:03In a story we broke in our first segment, baseball's all-star game is tonight,
11:10which makes it a perfect time to bring in the co-host of MLB Network's MLB Central, Mark DeRosa.
11:16Wilbon is a devotee of Mark's, which you'll find out later.
11:20Let's start with this.
11:21Some Phillies are having a problem with the Miz making the all-star team as a replacement.
11:28Mark, how do you feel about that?
11:29You know, I never looked at it, guys, like an entertainment product when I played.
11:35But now being on this side of it, I do see it as an entertainment product.
11:40This guy has lit it up.
11:41I know it's only five starts.
11:43I also know that a lot of guys have declined going.
11:48And usually the rule is if you're going to be a replacement, you have to be available to pitch in the game.
11:54I can understand Christopher Sanchez having an art.
11:57He should have been an all-star from jump.
12:00But he just pitched recently.
12:02He wasn't going to be available.
12:04Probably same with Ranger Suarez.
12:06They start going down the line and eventually they get to a guy who's throwing a buck 0-1,
12:11who has a chance to come in maybe in the fifth, sixth, or seventh inning and light it up.
12:15I can understand the guys having a problem with it, but as an entertainment product, I can't wait to see him tonight.
12:25God, I have to hate him as my birthright as a Cub fan, Mark, to hate the Miz, even though I'm fascinated by him, of course.
12:34Let's stay with starting pitching because we got this great matchup for as long as it lasts between Scooble and Skeens.
12:39If you were the Czar of Baseball, what would you do to sort of make sure starting pitching and starting pitching matchups were a bigger part of the game?
12:52Yeah, you know what?
12:53This is a bigger question.
12:55This is a full show because this is leaking down all the way into the youth.
12:58I just think there's got to be something in place.
13:01I don't know if it's a rule.
13:03The way I watch the game is I pick out who the best starting pitching matchup is that night, and that's where I'm fixated at.
13:11I don't get overrun with guys who are going to go four or five innings, and then they're just going to start rolling the bullpen in there.
13:18So for me, it's what the industry is valuing right now.
13:24Missing bats is kind of leaking down into the minor leagues, how they're being developed,
13:29and it's leaking into college and all the way into youth baseball.
13:33It's what these kids are chasing.
13:35I'm immersed.
13:36I have a 15-year-old son.
13:37They're chasing lighting up the radar gun.
13:39They're chasing exit below, even if it's not a hit.
13:43So I just think organizations have to start valuing efficiency, certainly stuff,
13:50but the ability to pitch and be willing to let these guys go through the lineup, not only twice,
13:56but some of them maybe a third time, and not be so fixated on a pitch count.
14:04There's something else that people might get fixated on.
14:07I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.
14:08We want to find out how you feel about players being able to challenge balls and strikes tonight.
14:14Yeah.
14:15Where are you on technology improving the game?
14:18I love it.
14:21I'm going to be honest with you.
14:22I just was the bench coach for Chipper Jones in the Futures game, and we got to use it,
14:27and I watched it work to our advantage twice.
14:30So, yeah, I'm good with it.
14:32I think you're going to see this next year.
14:34I think this is going to be brought into the game next year.
14:37I think they're trying to figure out how many challenges to give people.
14:41You don't want everyone saving it to the ninth inning, and then it slows down the game.
14:45The pitch clock has made the – whether you agree with it or not, it has made it a better product, in my opinion,
14:51getting the ball moving a little bit more.
14:54So, yeah, I think you're going to see it tonight.
14:57Guys are going to be scared to use it.
14:58Tarek Skubal actually said he's not going to use it.
15:01He'll leave it to his catcher if he wants to use it.
15:03Now, we got another question for you.
15:06This is a wild question.
15:07I was unaware of this.
15:08Pete Alonzo said today that he would like to see one-on-one fights get legalized in baseball the way they are in hockey.
15:18This is so off the board for me.
15:20Where do you come down on Alonzo's proposal?
15:23You know what's crazy?
15:26I kind of understand where he's coming from because the whole bench clearer and nobody throws a punch,
15:31and then here comes the bullpen, and we got a 15-minute delay, and it's a lot of pushing and shoving.
15:37Listen, I've been a part of a couple brawls in my life.
15:40You make a quick decision.
15:42You're either in the mix at the bottom of the pile, willing to get after it, or you're playing peacekeeper.
15:48So, I mean, I kind of get where he's coming from.
15:53Usually, it's a one-on-one matchup.
15:56If those guys want to go at it, I kind of understand where Pete's coming from.
16:02Yeah, Alonzo's coming from the position of being about 6'3".
16:05The biggest, strongest guy on the field.
16:08Yeah, that's where he's coming from.
16:10You're going to pick your spots.
16:12You're going to pick your spots, who you're going to drill and who you're not going to drill.
16:16Absolutely.
16:16Mark, thank you so much for being on the show.
16:19Thanks a lot, Mark.
16:19Appreciate it, man.
16:21Hey, big honor.
16:22Thank you, guys.
16:24Let's take one break.
16:25Still to come, a dunk to remember for, you know, at least a few days.
16:30If that.
16:31And what could a change in ownership mean for the Tampa Bay Rays?
16:35No, you can't have – it can't be like the NHL.
16:38No, no, I don't want that.
16:41No, nuh-uh.
16:42Okay, so you love DeRosa as a Cub, right?
16:45You love DeRosa.
16:46Happy time, people.
16:51Happy 20th birthday, Juju Watkins.
16:53The USC basketball star was averaging 23.9 points per game for the one-seed Trojans when
17:00Watkins tore her ACL in a second-round NCAA tournament game against Mississippi State in
17:05March.
17:06Watkins' absence was felt a couple of rounds later when USC lost to eventual national champion
17:11Connecticut, and we all missed the chance to see Watkins and Paige Beckers on the same
17:15court.
17:16Watkins had a sensational freshman year, averaging 27.1 points, second only to Kaitlin Clark.
17:22The last two number one draft choices in the WNBA are Clark and Beckers.
17:27Watkins could surely follow in their footsteps when she chooses to come out.
17:32Thank goodness that modern medicine and healthcare and technology have rendered the serious knee
17:39injury, just not as big a deal as it used to be, and the greatest players can come back now, including
17:46Juju Watkins.
17:48Happy anniversary, Rafael Palmeiro.
17:51On this day 20 years ago, while playing for the Orioles, Palmeiro doubled for the 3,000th hit of his career,
17:57joining only Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Eddie Murray as players then with at least 500 home runs and 3,000 hits.
18:05Palmeiro's shining moment took a dark turn within weeks when he was suspended for a positive steroids test.
18:10Palmeiro played only seven more games, finishing his career with the most games played by someone who
18:16never played in the World Series, 2,831.
18:20Palmeiro is not in the Hall of Fame, clearly because of steroids, and is likely most remembered for wagging
18:25his finger at a congressional inquiry into steroids and baseball.
18:29Tony, doesn't it seem Palmeiro, as great as he was, played most of his career in the shadows?
18:34Like, you just don't think that I don't have moments I go to automatically for somebody as great as Palmeiro,
18:41as talented as he was.
18:43No, you're right, but those numbers, those numbers are amazing numbers.
18:48Unbelievable.
18:48Happy trails to a little bit of dignity for Noah Asenge.
18:53The Bulls rookie got dunked on by Johnny Furphy of the Pacers in summer league yesterday.
18:58Asenge tried to deny Furphy at the rim and for his effort, ended up in a tough photo that was retweeted.
19:03It was retweeted by stars like Tyrese Halliburton and Caitlin Clark, and that image is what people
19:08will remember, even though Asenge outscored Furphy 21-15 and the Bulls won the game.
19:14Furphy grew up in Australia, Asenge is from France, so this could qualify as an international
19:18incident, Wilbon.
19:20I want Asenge to go up even stronger next time, not worry about the poster.
19:24Asenge, Brucellis, Kobe White, and Josh Giddey?
19:28I'm starting to just at least wonder if the Bulls are putting together something.
19:33I like that kid we drafted in the first round, 12th I think overall, Asenge, like what I've
19:38seen so far, in summer league.
19:40Yeah, let it rest.
19:41It's the offseason.
19:42Let it rest for a while.
19:43Big finish.
19:45Paul George had arthroscopic knee surgery to treat an injury suffered in a recent workout.
19:50Your thoughts.
19:50I know you love them.
19:52I do.
19:52They can't catch a break in Philly or Paul.
19:55It's training camp.
19:57It's a long season.
19:58I hope he can get out there soon, when it's time.
20:01Trevor Lawrence tells, pardon my take, he really needs to turn it on this season.
20:06What are you waiting for?
20:07You agree with him?
20:09Yeah.
20:09I mean, they paid, they redid his contract.
20:11They gave him a lot of money.
20:12And you loved him more than anybody ever in college.
20:15I did.
20:15I know that.
20:16The Panthers will host your Blackhawks to open the NHL season.
20:20I'm sure you're excited.
20:22No, we're not ready for prime time yet.
20:25No, no, no.
20:27The Washington football franchise will retire Art Monk's 81, number 81 jersey, this season.
20:33Make sense?
20:35Yes.
20:35I mean, he was a great receiver on Super Bowl winning teams.
20:39Yes.
20:40Last one.
20:40Ray's owner, Stu Sternberg, reportedly selling the team.
20:43Your thoughts.
