00:00These are 8 truths behind classic fairy tales.
00:078. Little Red Riding Hood
00:09Everyone is familiar with the story of Little Red Riding Hood, the little girl who takes
00:13some goodies to her sick grandmother and along the way is confronted by a wolf,
00:18who inevitably ends up dressing up like Red's grandma, and hijinks obviously ensue.
00:23What not a lot of people know is how this story originated.
00:27In its earliest form dating back to before the 17th century, the story takes a pretty
00:32gruesome turn, where the wolf kills the grandmother and leaves pieces of her meat
00:36and blood as a snack for Little Red Riding Hood to eat.
00:40In some versions, the wolf eats Red when she climbs into bed with him,
00:43and in others, she tricks the wolf into letting her go and is able to escape.
00:48There have been 58 different versions of this story told all over the world.
00:537. Sleeping Beauty
00:54The original story of Sleeping Beauty was told by French writer Charles Perrault in the 1600s,
01:00and starts off like the story we all know and love. Let's recap.
01:04Infant princess is christened, and has fairy godmothers, 7 in this version instead of 3.
01:09She is then cursed by an evil fairy, instead of an evil queen that comes later,
01:14who condemns her to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday.
01:18The last fairy tries to reverse the curse and says she will just sleep until kissed by her prince.
01:24Eventually, the curse comes true and the prince finds and kisses Sleeping Beauty,
01:28and they live happily ever after. But there's a part 2 to this version.
01:32The prince's mother is from ogre descent, and after Sleeping Beauty bears the prince's two children,
01:37the queen orders the cook to prepare the children for her to eat. The kind cook substitutes a goat and
01:43a lamb for the children. When the queen asks to have Sleeping Beauty prepared, the cook replaces her
01:49with a deer. Eventually, Sleeping Beauty is reunited with her children, and the prince saves the trio from
01:54being eaten alive by snakes and other disgusting creatures the queen has prepared in a tub. And instead,
02:01he throws his own mother in the tub and she dies. The end indeed.
02:076. Pinocchio
02:08One of the earliest versions of Pinocchio may be one of the more messed up stories on our list.
02:14It was first written in 1883 by Italian author Carlo Collodi. The premise was the same,
02:20a wooden boy carved by a woodcarver who wants to be a real boy, and lies often. But instead of Pinocchio
02:26being an endearing little scamp like in the Disney version, Pinocchio is described as basically having
02:32no moral compass and being vindictive. Ultimately, the story was supposed to be a PSA to children,
02:38warning them to behave, and eventually Pinocchio was killed by execution. What's worse is his
02:44execution was at the hands of his friends, a cat and a fox, and would entail his arms being bound
02:51and then being hung from a noose, his lifeless body swaying in the wind.
02:565. Snow White
02:57Originally a German fairy tale published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812, the final revision of the
03:03story was published in 1854. The story starts out the same, only after Snow White flees the huntsman
03:10and takes refuge in the dwarf's cottage, the evil queen tries two times to kill Snow White before
03:15she returns with the poison apple. The first time she disguises herself as a lace peddler,
03:20and shows up to give Snow White a lace bodice. She laces Snow White up so tight she can't breathe,
03:26causing her to faint. Then the dwarfs show up and save the day. The next time she disguises herself
03:32as a comb peddler, and arrives to give Snow White a comb for her hair. When she puts the poison comb
03:37in her hair, Snow White faints again, and again the dwarfs come to the rescue. You would think at this
03:42point Snow White would just stop answering the door. But then there's the apple, which finally takes
03:47Snow White down. After the prince wakes her with a kiss and they're planning their wedding,
03:52they invite the evil queen. The queen doesn't know Snow White is the woman marrying the prince,
03:57and when she arrives she is livid. Snow White and the prince present her with red hot iron shoes
04:03and force her to put them on and dance until she drops dead, which is where the story ends.
04:084. Rapunzel Rapunzel was first published in 1634 by Giambattista Basile and later adapted by the
04:16Brothers Grimm in 1812. In the earlier works, the plot is very similar to the eventual Disney version.
04:23Even the name of Mother Gothel remains the same, but a few key elements are different. For one thing,
04:28Rapunzel's parents are not a king and queen, but just a lonely couple who live next door to Gothel.
04:33Also, Rapunzel's father willingly gives her to Gothel in exchange for the magic flowers growing
04:39on her property. Talk about daddy issues. Eventually, Rapunzel is locked in the tower,
04:44and a prince hears her singing and climbs up to meet her. They fall in love and want to marry,
04:49but when Gothel finds out that Rapunzel is pregnant, she cuts off Rapunzel's hair and shuts her out into
04:55the wilderness. Gothel then tricks the prince up to the tower, where he throws himself out of the
05:00window when he finds out Rapunzel's gone. Instead of just going out and finding her,
05:04he's blinded by the thorny bushes he landed on. Eventually, he hears Rapunzel singing in the woods
05:10and is drawn to her. Her tears restore his sight and they live happily ever after.
05:153. The Pied Piper Published by the Brothers Grimm, this one is truly terrifying. The story goes that
05:21the mayor of the town of Hamlin, Germany, needed to get rid of an infestation of rats plaguing the town.
05:27He hired the Pied Piper to come and lead them away. The Pied Piper came and, using his magic flute,
05:33lured all the rats out of the town. When he tried to collect his payment, the mayor started lowballing him,
05:39and this angered the Pied Piper. He threatened the town that they'd be sorry they ever messed with him.
05:44The next morning at dawn, the Pied Piper made his way through the town playing his flute,
05:49but only the children could hear it. They all followed him in a trance out of the town,
05:54through the woods and a forest, to a mountain. A door in the mountain creaked open, revealing a cave.
06:00The children followed him inside and the door shut. A landslide came and blocked the door.
06:05Only one child escaped and went back to tell the villagers all the children were lost forever.
06:112. The Little Mermaid First written in 1836,
06:15The Little Mermaid was a Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. The Disney version borrowed
06:21some basic ideas from the original, but left out a lot of the dark moments. For instance,
06:26in exchange for her voice, the evil sea witch said she would give the mermaid legs,
06:30which will always feel like she's walking on sharp knives. And if the mermaid can't make the prince
06:36fall in love with her, she will die when he marries someone else and turn to sea foam.
06:40When the prince does arrange to marry someone else, the mermaid sisters bring her a knife to kill the
06:46prince so that her own life can be saved. She can't bring herself to kill the prince,
06:51so she throws herself into the sea and immediately turns to sea foam.
06:551. Cinderella There's probably no story more classic than Cinderella.
07:00A girl is forced to slave the day away, cleaning and doing chores, while her evil stepmother and
07:06evil stepsisters get to do whatever they want, usually making fun of Cinderella the whole time.
07:11The story was told by the brothers Grimm in a slightly different way than Disney. While the
07:16essence stays the same, evil stepmother, check, evil stepsisters, check, special fancy shoes, check,
07:23the main differences are that instead of a fairy godmother, Cinderella is visited by a white bird,
07:29who visits her at her mother's grave and gives Cinderella anything she wishes for. Another main
07:34difference is the violence. There is a lot of violence. One of the stepsisters cuts off her toes to
07:41make the slipper fit, while the other cuts off her heel. When the prince and Cinderella finally get
07:46married, some doves come and peck out the eyes of the stepsisters, leaving them blind. Which of these
07:52stories would have terrified you the most as a child? Let us know in the comments below! Don't forget to
