00:00The Rainbow Birds, a Latin American Indian Folk Tale.
00:07Long, long ago, long before man or even the animals walked the earth, the world was ruled by our feathered friends, the birds.
00:18At that time, all of the birds lived in one huge forest.
00:23There were many varieties of birds and they all lived peacefully together.
00:35However, if you and I were around at that time, we would have had a hard time recognizing and identifying any of them.
00:43You see, in those days, none of the birds sported any of the bright and beautiful colors that make them so distinctive today.
00:51They all wore shades of brown and gray and did little to brighten the forest.
00:58In fact, if it wasn't for the flowers that bloomed in all their splendid colors, the forest would have been a very dull place indeed.
01:07Some of the birds tried their best to brighten up their looks and add a little color to their lives.
01:13There, that should do it!
01:16Well, how about it? Not bad, huh?
01:33What's the matter with this anyway?
01:36Hey!
01:37Oh!
01:38The birds tried everything they could think of to give themselves color.
01:44They tried to dye themselves with berries.
01:48They tried to rub in the green of leaves.
01:55But nothing would last.
02:00And finally, they began to believe that once a gray bird, always a gray bird.
02:07It just seemed a shame that with all the beautiful colors of nature, the bird was blessed with only gray and brown.
02:14Every time the birds saw a pink butterfly or a golden orange, it only made them sadder.
02:22They couldn't understand why they had been so unlucky.
02:26Every day in the late afternoon, dark clouds would cover their tropical rainforest, bringing rain and thunder to the bird's home.
02:35But it wouldn't last long, and when the clouds would disappear, a marvelous rainbow would appear.
02:42The birds of the forest waited eagerly each day to catch a glimpse of the rainbow.
02:48The butterflies and flowers were beautiful in their own ways, but nothing in nature could match the radiant beauty of the rainbow.
02:57To the birds, the rainbow was their own special treasure.
03:02And every time it appeared, they wished with all their might, someday they too would be able to share some of nature's wonderful colors.
03:12But then one day, when the clouds parted, the rainbow appeared as always, yet something seemed very wrong.
03:22Huh?
03:23Did you see that?
03:26It was just as though the rainbow had somehow gotten dirty.
03:32Its beautiful colors were now dark and drab.
03:35The birds of the forest could not believe their eyes.
03:39They had so looked forward to seeing the rainbow after the rain.
03:43What would happen now?
03:45I wonder what could have happened to it.
03:48I wonder if it's got a cold or something.
03:50Don't be silly.
03:52Who ever heard of a rainbow catching a cold?
03:55Well, you know you never can tell.
03:58The birds sat watching and hoping that whatever was taking away the rainbow's color would disappear.
04:04But if anything, it seemed to be getting worse.
04:07Until, all of a sudden, mysterious holes began to appear all over the rainbow.
04:13Oh my goodness!
04:15The birds were heartbroken.
04:17What was happening to their treasured rainbow?
04:20Suddenly, a brilliant light appeared overhead.
04:25There, above the forest, flew a magnificent multi-colored magic bird.
04:32It was a phoenix.
04:35The phoenix is a legendary bird of tremendous and mysterious powers known to people all over the world.
04:46It lived in the heavens and had now come down to address its worldly cousins.
04:51My friends, one of my heavenly duties is to protect the rainbow.
04:55I have come to ask your help.
05:01Our rainbow has been attacked by an army of roaches.
05:04I tried my best, but there are far too many of them for me to handle alone.
05:08If we don't act quickly, I am afraid they will not stop until they have eaten every last bit of our rainbow.
05:14What do you say?
05:15Could you help?
05:16It's our only chance to save the rainbow.
05:19You can count on me.
05:32That's all, huh?
05:34Those courageous birds quickly volunteered to follow the phoenix.
05:40But not all of the birds were so eager to help.
05:58I just don't think it's any of our business.
06:01We should stay out of other people's business.
06:03Sure, I don't know how strong those bugs are.
06:06And I would get tired of that rainbow anyway.
06:10The phoenix was very disappointed to hear such talk.
06:14But there was no time to lose, so he flew off, leading those birds that did care.
06:22Higher and higher they flew as they readied themselves to win back their beloved rainbow from the wicked roaches.
06:33But as they drew nearer, they began to fear they were already too late.
06:38The rainbow was full of holes and the roaches showed no signs of stopping.
06:42Oh dear!
06:44Look at those horrible roaches!
06:46They were never yet.
06:47They were unable to go to the world, so that they were out.
06:49The Google Hund's eye is beyond the tomb, so they diverted the awry.
06:51The wind of the lion and the horn was not to win the world.
06:52They were too late.
06:53They were still 55 aligns with the wilderness.
06:54They were including a group who had fallen from a jumbo and the Marcus Rangers.
06:55They were also kidnapped from a mountain, so they hung up here.
06:56They were too young.
06:57They were just in order and they could have to do that.
06:59Well, their legacy is the biggest sign of the idol.
07:00They were too young.
07:01They were able to enjoy their own childhood.
07:02They were too tall.
07:04They were too young!
07:05They were too, they were too young.
07:07They were too young.
07:09They did not imagine!
07:10They were too young.
07:11They were too young.
07:16There's so many! I can't decide which ones do we first!
07:23They're everywhere! They're everywhere!
07:26They were badly outnumbered, but the courageous birds fought valiantly.
07:35The battle went on and on, and eventually both roaches and birds began to drop from exhaustion.
08:05But the birds would not give up, and finally they had fought their way to the rainbow itself, where a few roaches still ate on.
08:20At last the battle was over, and the birds had won!
08:28The birds were overjoyed at their victory, and then, before their very eyes,
08:54the rainbow renewed itself and shone as brightly as ever.
08:59In fact, to the birds it seemed even more wondrous than before.
09:07Let's go! Let's go!
09:09All the birds flew as one up to the rainbow.
09:13And as they did, a magical thing happened.
09:16As each bird passed through the rainbow, its feathers were changed into one of the rainbow's many wondrous colors.
09:23As your reward from this day forth, you shall all be birds of the rainbow.
09:39The rainbow birds couldn't have been happier.
09:42For years they had wished and waited for this day.
09:45And now their dream had come true.
09:48But remember, not all of the birds went to help the phoenix defend his rainbow.
09:54Those that stayed behind through laziness or selfishness were still very plain and common.
10:00So you can imagine their surprise and shame when the others returned from the rainbow in all their splendid colors and designs.
10:08They had learned their lesson to help a friend in me.
10:15But it was too late.
10:18If they had gone to help, they could have returned from the rainbow just as colorful and handsome as the others.
10:27And that is why to this day you can find both birds of many sparkling colors and those who are still very drab and very plain.
10:40So the next time you look outside, why don't you try to find those birds that come to the rainbow?
