00:00From the WNBA to the association this summer in the offseason drama and storylines we have
00:07already seen. It's been a while since we had to coach J.Y. James Young here on T.E.L. So let's
00:12get you caught up on all of the news around the association. J.Y. let's dive right in. Of course
00:18you were with us when we got the initial blockbuster trade deal for Kevin Durant being
00:24shipped from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets because it happened on the afternoon
00:28entering the night of game seven of the 2025 NBA final. So we got your thoughts that week.
00:34Officially though as of last Sunday July 6th when the NBA season officially started that trade went
00:41through it turned out to be part of a 17 deal the largest ever in the history of the NBA. But again
00:47still the headliners J.Y. Kevin Durant on his way to the Houston Rockets. We have seen some other moves
00:54happen of course throughout this offseason. Free agency the 2025 NBA draft. I ask you a question
01:01now not about the deal and your reaction to it but Houston's outlook entering 2025-26. With the
01:08addition of Kevin Durant are the Rockets the second best team out west only behind the Thunder?
01:13They are. When you really look at that team you know getting you know Fred VanVleet at the point
01:21you know Reed Shepard shout out to Reed Shepard just you know two games I think he played in NBA
01:25Summer League look good one of them. But then you look at that front court of Ament Thompson,
01:30Alferen Shingun and obviously Kevin Durant. That is a top-notch starting five. But when you go to that
01:36bench and you have Tari Easton, you have Jabari Smith, you have Clint Capella, you have Stephen
01:44Adams. You have affordable bench to go along with who I think is one of the top five coaches
01:49in the NBA. It'll be interesting because one of the problems that Houston had I thought was a closer.
01:56Well now you got your closer. So to me they absolutely make sense in regard to them being
02:02the best team out in the Western Conference. Let's stay out and rest really quick because I saw the
02:07graphic and you talk about Denver. I thought getting Cam Johnson for Michael Porter Jr. is just
02:15just getting a guy that may not have the ceiling of Michael Porter Jr. but it's just more consistent
02:21in his play right in the middle as a stretch four. I thought that was really good but for them
02:26you know to get Bruce Brown back to get Valanciunas for the bench. We'll see what happens with Valanciunas
02:30because you know I think he wants more playing time. He's not going to get it there. I thought
02:35that Denver addressed their bench which I thought was a major problem. So to me when you look at the
02:41Western Conference it's OKC, it's Houston, and it's Denver right now 1-2-3. Let's get back to the
02:48East here because an interesting move that happened with Damian Lillard getting bought out for the
02:52Milwaukee Bucks which allowed them to sign Miles Turner as their center. If you look at the odds market
02:57it didn't really move anything around. The Milwaukee Bucks sitting at roughly a 40 plus or excuse me
03:024,500 roughly 45 to 1 to a 50 to 1 dog shot here to win in the NBA Finals. Now I'm not looking for
03:09them to win anything but talk to me about the ramifications of this deal. Is it positive?
03:14Is the only thing they just wanted to keep Giannis healthy to say or happy happy to say we have a guy
03:19we're trying to add on please don't leave us or say you want to leave us?
03:23But I don't think they made him happy because he was the one that wanted Damian Lillard on the team
03:28more than anybody else. He also wanted Kyle Kuzma. That didn't work out too well for him either. And
03:33listen at the end of the day Donnie it's it's it's not even a positive negative. It's like it's a neutral
03:39right? You just got rid of a seven foot shot blocking non-rebounding no post-up threat shooter
03:48for a younger version of a seven foot rip protecting non-rebounding no post play three
03:58point shooter. It's at the end of the day it's the same thing. Now they they're addressing their
04:03bench in a little bit of ways to look for Cole Anthony to go and sign with them as or after he
04:07gets bought out. But when you look at Milwaukee you I don't see where they are competitive right now in
04:15Eastern Conference but you know listen we'll get the boss in a second but New York is better
04:20Cleveland's better Orlando's better to treat maybe better right Atlanta took a monumental leap with
04:26the moves they made. I don't even I'm looking at Milwaukee being a playing team and if they're a
04:32playing team you know that's not going to make Giannis very happy. Right now tied to the seventh best
04:37price in the Eastern Conference to win that conference ground at 14 to 1. I think it was a
04:43stunning move JY when it happened. Whoa Miles Turner leaving Indiana after a decade to go to
04:47Milwaukee of all places conveniently maybe ironically the Pacers ousting the Bucs in the opening round
04:54each of the previous two years and then immediately after how are they affording Miles Turner? What?
04:59They're waving and stretching Dame in the final like half million or more than a hundred million dollars
05:05whatever it is over the next five years and 22 million dollars per season. It was a wild move
05:11and the ultimate question being does it make Milwaukee better? You just got the assessment
05:16out of JY. We'll focus now on the Celtics who are also 14 to 1 and really JY it's kind of in the
05:24entire context of the Eastern Conference as we have discussed the significant injury to Jason Tatum.
05:30The Seas looked at the roster and they said all right time to make some financial moves. They trade
05:34Drew Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to free up some monetary space there in that payroll. What do you
05:42believe the Celtics outlook is this year in an Eastern Conference that is still very uncertain?
05:48Hopefully they're a top four or five seed in the East. Let's be honest Ben. They had to make these
05:53moves because they were up against it in regards to the luxury tax. So they had they had to make moves.
05:58They really had no choice and they chose uh two players that I thought were going to be the ones
06:05being moved which was Drew Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Now it's there's other things that that's
06:11going to be uh the downfall of the Celtics. There's also the fact that Jason Tatum is not going to play
06:16this entire season with the Achilles injury that he suffered in game number four of the Eastern
06:20Conference semifinals versus the Knicks. It's do they have their money to pay Al Horford? Oh my god
06:26Luke Cornett who looked like Llewell Cinder one game blocking everybody's shot. He's gone to San
06:31Antonio. So now we look at a starting lineup of Derek White, Anthony Simons, Jalen Brown,
06:37Georges Niang, and Luka Garza. Oh boy oh boy that is not going to get it done and I question how
06:46Anthony Simons is going to fit in with Boston. He does not play a great defense. He takes terrible
06:51shots. I don't know how it fits with him and Jalen Brown. Yeah it's going to be interesting to see
06:58what the Celtics actually do this year to JY's point. Boston still considered a playoff team in
07:03the Eastern Conference minus 290. The Bucs by the way to make the postseason out east minus 340 as
07:10those early odds are starting to trickle in. Speaking of early odds, early impressions with the rookie class
07:18through Summer League next. Live right here on the early line on this Monday opening weekend of
07:24Summer League action out in Sin City has hit the books. I know DRS asked JY as we welcomed on the
07:30coach for his opening segment about why some of these guys are shutting it down including that
07:35number one overall pick in Cooper Flagg after only two appearances in Las Vegas. I'll take it
07:42another way JY. When you look at the NBA rookie of the year odds outside of Cooper Flagg who posted a
07:4931 point performance in his second and final appearance in that Las Vegas Summer League of the
07:55other rookies in this 2025 class. Not named Cooper Flagg who has impressed you most so far.
08:02I like Trey Johnson. I looked at the way he's able to score and create. I mean I've never seen a guy
08:10lose his dribble, shot fake, throw it off someone's leg on the angle he did just to catch it to go to
08:16the basket. I mean it was kind of like you know the NBA and one mixtape tour. But for goes in fact
08:22he could score. The question you're gonna have for him obviously Ben is what do they do with Smart?
08:29What do they do with Middleton? What do they do with McAuliffe? That is going to dictate what happens
08:36in regards to the playing time that Johnson is going to get. Ace Bailey obviously when you move
08:42on from Sexton, when you move on from Clarkson, when you move on from John Collins, there's more
08:47playing time and more shots. I was more impressed about the fact that the things that I questioned
08:51about him, his defense, his motor, his rebounding, that looked pretty good to me. So maybe the offense
08:58can come. B.J. Etchcombe looked obviously dynamic in that game versus Ace Bailey scoring 28 points
09:05and looked fantastic. But the guy I gotta talk about is a guy that you and I were like, wait
09:11they picked him where? Who? Yang Hanson. I mean let me tell you something. I'm pretty nice. I mean
09:21I'm watching him. He's diving people up. I, I, you never want to hear guys being compared
09:27to the all time greats, right? But when you watch him play and see how he manipulates people
09:35with his eyes and his ability to get people a cut and pass the ball, it's got a little bit
09:41of joker to him, a little bit of Shen Good to him. Now I'm not saying he's going to be there,
09:47but I was impressed. And I mean, the guy's name is Hanson and he blocked shots. So block
09:54he does as well. I like this kid. Also, I saw some things out of Derek Queen that I liked
10:00as well. This rookie class looks like it's going to be off to a good start, but a lot
10:04of it's going to depend on what teams do in order to opening up playing time for these
10:08kids.
10:09Now I like all the good vibes coach, but you know me, I want to be a hater and hate on
10:13some of these young kids. Who have you watched in the summer league? Like my man, this
10:15guy can't play because you look, you draft him top 10, top 15. He can't play after two
10:20games, coach. Give me a player who can't play right now. Come on, help me out.
10:24You know, it's really hard to say when you look at that because you have to, you have
10:27to, guys don't make shots, right? So to me, that's the thing that you have to worry about
10:33is, you know, what guys aren't playing well. It's hard in some league because some of these
10:40guys are only playing a couple of minutes, you know, other guys that look good. I want to,
10:43cause I want to say positive, cause I'm a coach. Liam McNeely showed me some things
10:46that's ability to shoot the ball. And then obviously, you know, you got to look at me
10:51and Ben were big Nick Clifford guys. And I think that he could be someone that could be
10:55a desirable player. And then lastly, Jace Richardson. I, I want to see how they use him
11:00in Orlando. It's going to give Jamal Mosey a way to how he can use those guards
11:04between him, Anthony Black, uh, obviously Jalen Suggs, Desmond Bain. How do they use Jace
11:11Richardson? The kid can score. I mean, the kid could score and he could shoot the lights
11:16out. And the one thing Orlando can't do is shoot. They got Bain. I think Richardson's
11:21going to help as well.
11:23It was a great pick at 25th overall. Jace Richardson in his two summer league games,
11:27a total of 33, including 19 last night, both he and me Clifford Donnie and I, a couple
11:33of Sacramento guys, 150 to one right now to win NBA rookie of the year, not listing a price
11:40on the big tariff. Young Han son. That's a little bit disrespectful. If you ask me right
11:46now for the trailblazers, J Y, I'm not going to ask you to lay minus one 70 on Cooper flag.
11:52And of course we understand the odds can be a determining factor and actually placing a
11:57wager. I'm going to ask you my own bet here. If you had to bet yes or no, that Cooper flag
12:03and his rookie campaign for the Dallas Mavericks wins rookie of the year, which side are you leaning
12:08on?
12:10Yes. I think he wins rookie of the year. And I think really quick things to look at for him
12:14rebounds plus assists. He will be a primary boiler and stocks. He is going to get steals and blocks
12:20over two and a half almost nightly.
12:23Our producer extraordinaire, Joe Friso thought the Mavs win total would probably be
12:2745 and a half, 46 and a half. It's only 40 and a half, which is kind of what I thought
12:32it would be.
12:33The Mavs have the eighth best price to win the West. Make it make sense. J Y and Fader went
12:39break in hour three next.
