00:00Another week, another BYD launch. This is the Dolphin Surf, get it? Part of the Ocean
00:06Series on the waves. I'm here at Alexander Palace, home of the darts, and it's absolute
00:12chaos up there. This is a thousand influencers looking at a very small car, very, very busy,
00:18but I'm here to tell you whether you should be considering one of these or whether you
00:21should just swim away. Is it a bullseye for BYD?
00:30So who said there won't be any cheap Chinese cars to start at just over £18,000, but we're
00:43going to come back to pricing. But it's a cute, small thing. I've been driving around the streets
00:48of North London, and yeah, I wouldn't say it's fun, but it's perfectly sensible, and I think
00:55I've upset the BYD guys by saying I think a lot of Honda Jazz buyers are going to be swayed
00:58by this, but let's have a quick look around. So we've got some lovely LED lights here,
01:03depending on which version you go for. Three versions, A, B, C, Active, Boost, Comfort.
01:09Active is a really cheap one. It doesn't go very far. No one will go for that. Boost is
01:12probably one most people go for Comfort. This is the posh one. So you get LED lights. Everything
01:17looks the same pretty much. There's not a huge amount of difference. Alloy wheels on the Comfort
01:22version here, the same as on the Boost version. You get Steelers with wheel covers on the Active
01:27one. You've got some fancy guppings at the front here. You've got a camera for 360 degree
01:32view on the Comfort version. Lots of sensors. All these cars have lots of gadgets and gizmos
01:39on them, which is pretty good, including adaptive cruise control. So it is a small car. This is
01:45where you charge it. At the front there, it has fast charging-ish as well. You're probably
01:50not going to buy it in this colour, are you? Maybe you'll be brave. We'll have a look at
01:55the back. But I think BYD have done a really good job of making a small car look quite funky
02:01with the colour, obviously helps. But the shape is pretty good. It has this sort of floating
02:05roof, which they get by painting this little bit black here. And more LED loveliness going
02:10on around the back. This full length light bar there, which everybody says always accentuates
02:18the width of the car. But have you seen what's missing? It's another one of these cars. There's
02:24nothing under there. Where's the rear wiper? It's got a rear wiper on it. Anyway, things are
02:31going to get better. Let's have a look inside. Do you know what? I'm a difficult bloke to please,
02:38but this is really quite nice in here for a small, affordable car. You've got Apple CarPlay
02:43in this 10.1-inch screen. And if I do this, it has my favourite BYD function. You see that?
02:53Completely pointless, but it's a fun thing to show your friends a few times before they
02:58get bored with it as well. The only trouble is when you want to select Apple CarPlay, it
03:02has to show it in landscape mode, but that's fine. So quality-wise, let's tap the top there.
03:07Lots of hard plastics, but this is quite nice here. And here you've got some proper buttons.
03:14This is the gear selector there. You can change the volume as you can do it on the steering
03:18wheel and a few other things. But this screen is actually really quite clever, because if
03:23you want to change the temperature, you see three fingers, you just use three fingers and
03:28you move your hand up and down. If you want to change the fan speed, you just move it left
03:33to right, which is really quite cute. And apparently as well, there are simple ways to get to fast
03:40functions and you can personalise all this. So you can, this dock at the bottom of the screen,
03:45you can choose which functions you have in there, whether you want to turn off the speed
03:48limit warning. I would recommend you put at the bottom a button there that does the rear
03:53demister, because otherwise you won't now. Did I mention the fact that there's no rear
03:57wiper on there? So you're going to need that, that rear demister. In terms of kit, you've got
04:02a smartphone charger, a couple of nice places there to put your cups, a bit of storage
04:06underneath. The seats are really comfortable. The view out, this is a bit low, but other than
04:13that, it's okay. The view rearwards is okay. Did I mention there's no rear wiper? Not that
04:18I'm obsessed. But yeah, it's nice in here. The speedo and this screen here is just a bit
04:24confusing. I'd like to have the speed really big in the middle, but instead it's just tucked
04:29away to the right. Hopefully they can update that with an over the air update. But do you
04:33know, this is impressive. It's headroom is pretty good. Loads of kit. Oh, you can use your phone
04:38as well as a key. And that's on every model. It's not just on the top model. In fact, all
04:43you really get on the top model, go a little bit faster and it doesn't quite go as far and
04:48you get electric seats as well. Not that you really need electric seats, but they're quite
04:53nice things to have. Electric seats, you just play with them like this. But you don't want
04:59to mess up the backspace, do you? Let's have a look and see if I can fit in the back.
05:05Now remember that this seat in the front is set up for me and I'm the best part of six foot tall
05:09and it's going to be kids back here most of the time. So let's see how it does it for me.
05:15Flat floor, which is really useful. Just makes it feel more spacious. Look at this. Space there.
05:22Lots of headroom. View out is okay. Holes in the front of the seat. Be looking at the back
05:27of the driver's neck. You always wanted to do that, didn't you? I don't like the backs of necks.
05:31Yeah, space back here. I don't think I want to have three people across the back.
05:36In fact, you can't. There's no third seatbelt. But this is really impressive.
05:42But is the boot as impressive? Let's have a look. In the boot here, there is 308 litres of space.
05:49I know what you're thinking. What does 308 litres of space look like?
05:53Ta-da! Well, it's not bad. I mean, if you need to, you can put the rear seats down as well.
06:00And there you go. Easy as that. There's some space under there where there's a load of BYD bags
06:06where they come with a car probably charging cables and stuff like that.
06:10But that's all right. 308 litres. Big enough. As big as they used to be in a pretty much in a Ford Fiesta.
06:15Remember those cars? Where have all those buyers gone? Maybe.
06:26Driving a little car is often all about compromises. Things like the seating position.
06:31This time, I'm very pleased to report that steering adjusts for up and down and in and out, brake and reach.
06:38So, the drive position is really good. I mentioned before, the only slight criticism I've got is that the header rail up here seems to come down quite low.
06:46You've got a nice low scuttle at the front. So, visibility is okay.
06:50And yeah, I'm taller than average, so most people can sit a bit further down.
06:53But I have got the seats quite as far down as possible.
06:56Getting in and out is a novel.
06:59A couple of other little things. You know, I've mentioned in here how the...
07:04Ah, there's the speed limit warning beep. Just a gentle one on this car, so I shall slow down.
07:09How the three finger movement on here adjusts the temperature and the fan speed.
07:15Yeah, the slight problem is, it's air conditioning, not climate control.
07:20So, I've been constantly fiddling around with heat and fan speed and not ever being satisfied.
07:28You know, with climate control, you just set the temperature and it adjusts everything perfectly.
07:32But that's just a minor thing. And there's no separate brake operation.
07:38You just hit the P button on the end of the gear selector there.
07:42That said, okay, another compromise with small cars is often the ride quality.
07:49Now, quite often the ride quality in a short wheelbase car just isn't very good, frankly.
07:56But what's impressed me most, and I'm driving around North London in the streets around Alexander Palace.
08:02And I'm just about to go over a raised Zipper crossing.
08:07The ride quality of this is really quite good. I'm really impressed.
08:11This is a really comfortable car to drive and a really easy car to drive.
08:17It's not quick. The comfort version I'm in here, I think it gets below 10 seconds, 9.7 seconds or something like that.
08:25The other cars are a little bit slower.
08:28But for just poofling around town with space in the back for the kids.
08:34This is perfectly comfortable.
08:36So the ride is really good.
08:38The steering is good.
08:40You've got cameras as well.
08:42I'm really quite impressed.
08:47For a small, relatively cheap car, I'm really impressed.
08:52I guess the thing is, I don't think I was expecting to be this impressed.
08:58But I should be in this world urban car.
09:00I mean, isn't it?
09:01I like this car.
09:02And I know, again, BYD won't like me saying it, but you could imagine Honda Jazz buyers
09:08who want to go electric and can't in the Jazz, suddenly thinking,
09:12yeah, I'll have one of them.
09:14Easy to get in and out of.
09:16Easy to control.
09:17Don't be frightened about this because the tech works well.
09:21And, yeah.
09:28I don't know why I'm laughing.
09:30But yeah, I really, I like it.
09:34Would I have one?
09:35I don't know, a little town runabout.
09:37For the price.
09:40Yeah.
09:41Yeah.
09:42Yeah, BYD.
09:44Yeah.
09:47The red book of truth here.
09:48How am I going to sum up this car?
09:50Well, firstly, I'm going to put my glasses on and tell you all about pricing and specs
09:54because it's quite detailed.
09:56So, ABC, simple.
09:58Active Boost Comfort.
09:59Active costs $18,650.
10:01Boost, which is one most people will buy, $21,950.
10:05And the Comfort one is $23,950.
10:07Now, nobody is going to pay this prices.
10:10What you really want to know is the one you want to buy, which is the Active car.
10:13That comes with a 43 kilowatt-hour battery.
10:16It'll do 200 miles.
10:18That's not bad for a car like this.
10:20Most people don't do 20 miles a day, so you'll charge it once a week, if that.
10:25So, just bear that in mind.
10:27But you can get a Boost, £279 down, £279 a month on a PCP.
10:34That's not bad.
10:35You'll probably have to pay seven and a half grand to own the car at the end.
10:38Or, just hand the car back.
10:40Or, if it's worth more than that, you just roll into another PCP.
10:44You can get the Active one if you want to.
10:46The Active one, smaller battery, 30 kilowatt-hour battery.
10:49It only does 137 miles.
10:51It costs £269 down, £269 a month.
10:55You're going to pay the extra tenner, aren't you?
10:57For the Boost with more kit, more range, a bit more performance.
11:02If you want to go the whole hog, the Comfort one with £239.50.
11:06Sounds like a lot of money.
11:07You're going to have to pay £309 down, £309 a month.
11:12But, it goes a bit faster.
11:14It doesn't quite go as far.
11:16Stick with B, okay?
11:17A, B, C.
11:18Stick with B, Boost.
11:19That is absolutely fine.
11:21Charging.
11:22Yeah, it's relatively quick.
11:24It's 85 kilowatt charging.
11:26Which will do, guess what?
11:2810 to 80% in about half an hour, don't they?
11:30Anyway.
11:31What do I like about this car?
11:33A lot, actually.
11:34I think it looks cute.
11:35Forget this colour.
11:36It is already a World Car Award winner.
11:40It's World Urban Car.
11:42I'm a World Car Juror.
11:43I can vouch for that.
11:44And do you know what?
11:45I'm pretty pleased with that.
11:46I would give this car another award.
11:48What I like about it most is the space, the kit, the quality.
11:52For the money, it's pretty good.
11:53And the way it drives.
11:54It's a nice little car to drive around town.
11:56It rides nicely over all the speed bumps in London.
11:59So for me, a BYD, thankfully they're not putting Build Your Dreams on the back of cars anymore.
12:04Not just BYD, but the BYD Dolphin Surf has hit the bullseye.
12:11a small買hard курor hour description.
12:14So the bad idea is that I'm not running out of time.
12:17And it's probably not getting there.
12:18And it's just the wrong way.
12:19If I could try this, that's why we're going to get the British.
12:21It is probably when they're giving the Sutle Falseèsاشon with a Bar why did this continue to be right.
12:23And what did you think about it itself?
12:25I owned something by now and seeing this.
12:27I liked what an adult viewer view.
12:29And it was an adult viewer.
12:30met him what an assistant eyes to be right.
